Bruins-Rangers rematch: This one could get nasty
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I attended the New York Rangers-Boston Bruins game in Boston Saturday night, which the B’s took 3-1 as -135 favorites.
The rematch goes tonight. To help you handicap it, here are some observations from Saturday, along with a couple of other relevant NHL notes:
Odds: Boston (+110) vs. New York Rangers (-120), O/U 5
Time: 7:30 p.m. ET, Madison Square Garden
- Early money pushed this line down to -120 as of noon ET Wednesday after opening at around -135 at most books.
- The Rangers couldn’t get out of their end in the first period. They were outshot 14-7, but it felt more like 20-2. Tells me that first period lines are worth a look for teams making their home debuts, even though you’ll be looking at some chalk (Pittsburgh, San Jose and Anaheim are the only three teams yet to play a home game heading into Wednesday).
- The second period was more balanced with a couple of solid scraps about seven minutes into the period just three seconds apart (Scott Thornton vs. Michael Rupp and Gregory Campbell vs. Stu Bickel). New York coach John Tortorella isn’t afraid to use fighting to help shift the physical balance of a game, which the Rangers were definitely losing to that point.
- With that in mind, Boston played another hard-hitting game against Winnipeg Monday (2-1 shootout win) and it will be interesting to see how they hold up with three very physical games in five nights. They’ll face a surly New York squad that also lost its home opener 6-3 to Pittsburgh Sunday.
- If things get nasty tonight, the power plays weren’t much to look at Saturday. The teams combined to go 0-for-12 on the PP and the Bruins are now 0-for-9 through two games. Boston has also killed all nine power plays against though, while the Rangers gave up two power-play goals against Pittsburgh in a 6-3 defeat Sunday.
- Preseason Vezina favorite Henrik Lundqvist was as shaky as you’ll ever see him. He fought the puck most of the night and Boston’s third goal that sealed the game was a groaner. He was pulled versus Pittsburgh after allowing four goals on 18 shots - the first time he’s been pulled since October 2011 according to CSN New England.
- Tuukka Rask on the other hand looked solid in nets for the Bruins. He can thank great team defense for that too.
- Overall, New York looked like a flat team that has yet to jell. New acquisition Rick Nash has two points in two games, but the team needs to find some chemistry in a hurry. Tortorella told reporters Tuesday: "The only thing we should focus on is our mindset... that's what needs to be corrected right now."
- Home teams are 15-16-0-4 overall in the NHL so far and home faves are just 12-10-0-2 SU (50 percent).
- Keep in mind that four percent of the season is gone for these teams. I'll be surprised if the Rangers aren't at playoff-intensity level tonight. That won't be lost on the Bruins either, who know how much a 3-0 start would mean in this shortened season.

Lakers at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Los Angeles Lakers at Memphis Grizzlies (-4, 188)
Pau Gasol's next game against his former team will be his first in a bench role - and may be his last as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Gasol returns to Memphis with his current club in disarray as the Lakers take on the Grizzlies in a Wednesday night tilt. The Lakers have dropped three straight games and have looked dreadful in doing so, prompting head coach Mike D'Antoni to take Gasol out of the starting lineup in favor of Earl Clark. Rumors persist that Gasol will be traded prior to the Feb. 21 deadline.
Things are much more positive in Memphis, where the Grizzlies remain a top-four team in the Western Conference as they reach the halfway point of their season. Memphis has been just fine without Pau in the frontcourt, as younger brother Marc has excelled at center and Zach Randolph is among the league leaders in rebounding at power forward. The Grizzlies are coming off an 82-81 defeat at the hands of the Indiana Pacers on Monday, and shook things up Tuesday by trading three players to Cleveland.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Los Angeles), SportSouth (Memphis)
ABOUT THE LAKERS (17-24): With turmoil plaguing the team for most of the season, Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant decided to take a break from present-day happenings and focus on the past. The future Hall of Famer celebrated Tuesday's seventh anniversary of his 81-point performance against the Toronto Raptors by watching the game in its entirety for the first time. As a treat to fans, he broke in his relatively new Twitter account by sending out messages while the game was being re-broadcast. Bryant may need to channel some of his 2006 performance Wednesday as he faces off against a Memphis club allowing the second-fewest points per game in the league (89.4).
ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (26-14): Memphis made a minor move Tuesday, dealing Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a heavily protected future draft pick to the Cavaliers for forward Jon Leuer and a trade exception. The deal was conducted with business in mind - it saves the Grizzlies $6 million against the salary cap and eliminates the need to pay a luxury tax bill of roughly $4 million. "It’s a trade that had to be made ... so that we can keep our core together and we move forward," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I hate to lose Mo and Wayne and Josh but it's part of the business of basketball."
TRENDS:
* Lakers are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.
* Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last ive5 vs. NBA Pacific foes
* Under is 6-1 in Lakers’ last 7 overall.
* Under is 5-1 in Grizzlies’ last six home games.
BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Memphis has won two straight meetings, including a 106-98 victory over the Lakers on Nov. 23.
2. The Lakers' Gasol averages 14.9 points and 10 rebounds in 14 games against his former team.
3. Randolph and the Lakers' Dwight Howard are the only players in the NBA to average at least 16 points and 11 rebounds.
