Lakers at Bulls: What bettors need to know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago Bulls (PICK, 194)

The Los Angeles Lakers attempt to end a five-game road losing streak when they visit the Chicago Bulls on Monday. It has been nearly six years since Los Angeles experienced such a poor road stretch and the Lakers are a paltry 5-13 overall away from home. Chicago had won three consecutive outings before falling in overtime to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. Ironically, the Bulls are just 11-11 at home compared to a 12-5 road mark.

Chicago is a game behind the first-place Indiana Pacers in the Central Division. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was mighty unhappy about the loss to Memphis. “You name it,” Thibodeau said. “No defense, turnovers, poor execution, floor balance. One thing led to another.” Los Angeles has lost eight of 10 games and the frustration level was boiling after Sunday’s loss to the Toronto Raptors. Center Dwight Howard was ejected and point guard Steve Nash criticized the lack of preparation. “I didn’t feel like we were ready to play,” Nash said. “We cut too many corners at too many different times in the game and had too big a hole to climb out of. We’re just not finding any consistent level out of our group.”

    TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE LAKERS (17-23): Kobe Bryant scored 26 points against Toronto for his 24th consecutive game with 20 or more points but made just 10 of 32 shots. “My legs are a little tired,” Bryant said afterwards. “My shots are just short. That’s on me. I’ll take this loss on me, gladly. There were a lot of easy shots, a lot of them, that I should have put down. My offense was sub-par in terms of missing easy shots.” Forward Pau Gasol scored a season-best 25 points in his second outing since returning from a concussion. His only other 20-point contest came in the season-opening loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

ABOUT THE BULLS (23-16): Second-year forward Jimmy Butler excelled in his first career start in the loss to Memphis. Butler was in the lineup due to the absence of injured starter Luol Deng (hamstring) and played more than 47 minutes while posting career highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. He also delivered a solid contribution – 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting – in Friday’s road victory in Boston. Interestingly, center Joakim Noah didn’t play a single minute in the fourth quarter or overtime of the loss. “That’s just a coaching decision,” was Thibodeau’s answer.

    TRENDS:

    * Lakers are 1-7 ATS in their last eight Monday games.
    * Bulls are 1-5 ATS in their last six vs. NBA Pacific foes.
    * Under is 5-1 in Lakers’ last six overall.
    * Under is 4-1 in Bulls’ last five vs. NBA Pacific opponents.

    BUZZER BEATERS:

    1. Chicago has won the last two meetings after a stretch in which Los Angeles won seven of eight games.

    2. Lakers F Earl Clark had 14 points and a season-high 14 rebounds in the loss to the Raptors.

    3. Bulls C Carlos Boozer is averaging 21.4 points and 13.8 rebounds over the last five games.

      3) Duke 42.2% 332) Mississippi State 27.7%
      4) Boise State 42.1% 337) Texas Tech 26.6%
      5) Harvard 41.9% 340) Charlotte 26.3%

      7) Notre Dame 40.6% 346) North Texas 25.3%

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a quiet Sunday.......

      13) You can bet the Super Bowl in Las Vegas all season; they had a line of AFC -3 for most of this season, but now that Broncos/Patriots are gone, the 49ers have been listed as -5, with a total of 49.5 in the Super Bowl.

      12) Odd stat lives on: 49ers were the 8th #4 seed since 1990 to advance to a conference title game. #4 seeds are the team with worst record of the four divisional winners, so they probably have to upset the #1 seed to get to a conference title game. Since '90, #4 seeds are 7-1 SU in conference title games, and of those eight, only the '08 Cardinals were playing at home.

      11) Tom Brady will be 36 in August; Bill Belichick is 60. Aren't going to be that many more chances for that combo to win a Super Bowl. I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that Patriots have won zero Super Bowls since SpyGate- they won three Super Bowls (all by three points) before SpyGate.

      10) Scott Stallings had a 5-shot lead after three rounds at the Humana Challenge golf tournament in California, but it was gone before he finished his ninth hole Sunday. Stallings hit a ball in the water on 18 and finished T4th. Brian Gay wound up a winning a three-man playoff.

Never heard of Brian Gay? That was his 4th career Tour win and he's now won just under $17M in his career. Thats million, with an M.

      9) Chip Kelly gets $32.5M for five years from Eagles, making him a top-10 paid coach in the NFL; seven years ago, he was OC at New Hampshire, and that was the best job he had ever had. Wow.

      8) Excellent NBA game in Denver, where the Nuggets beat the Thunder in overtime, 121-118. Fun game to watch.

In his last two games, Kevin Durant is 41-42 from the foul line, and both of those games were on the road.

      7) Neither NFL home team scored in the second half Sunday. This is first time since '97 both home teams lost conference title tilts.

      6) Has a team ever fired its offensive coordinator in December and then gotten to the Super Bowl? LA Rams fired their head coach in training camp in '79, then got to Super Bowl but firing a coordinator in December just does not happen a lot with winning teams.

      5) Spencer Hardison points out that Jim Harbaugh once played Screech's cousin in one episode of Saved By The Bell, a TV show I've never seen, but I think the guy from that is on TNT's Franklin & Bash now.

      4) Super Bowl is February 3; obviously by then, we'll be sick of everything that has anything to do with the Harbaughs, but ESPN's Saturday night game on February 2nd is Michigan at Indiana. Hoosiers are coached by Tom Crean, who is married to Jim/John Harbaugh's sister.

      3) Falcons blew a 20-0 lead at home last week, needed a miracle comeback to win; they blew a 17-0 lead Sunday, also at home. Going to be a long winter in Atlanta, as they try to figure out how to get better.

Also hurts Arthur Blank's attempt to get the Falcons a new stadium.

      2) Think about how dead the Ravens were in Denver last week; they tied the game with a 70-yard TD pass with 0:31 left. Broncos have to be sick to see Baltimore advancing to the Super Bowl.

      1) Ravens' owner is a guy named Steve Bisciotti who was wearing jeans and a ballcap at the game last night; love it!!! Don't like it when the owners are decked out in suits/ties- its a ballgame, relax. He owns Allegis Group, the largest privately held staffing firm in the United States and 6th in the world.

Bisciotti went to Salisbury State, which is hour down the road from Ocean City, MD; good to see a state university alum hitting it rich-- he is listed as #298 in the Forbes top 400 of rich people.

Niners open as faves in Super Bowl XLVII

The San Francisco 49ers are favored to win Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on Feb. 3.

Mike Perry of Sportsbook.ag is opening San Francisco as 5.5-point favorites over the Baltimore Ravens with the total set at 50 and online sportsbook BetOnline has the 49ers as 5-point favorites with a total of 49.

The Niners prevailed 28-24 over the Atlanta Falcons and covered the 3.5-point spread Sunday afternoon in the NFC Championship Game, while the Ravens pulled off a huge 28-13 upset over the Patriots as 8-point underdogs Sunday night in the AFC Championship Game.

Baseball odds: Team USA on top of WBC futures
