      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Rough day for baseball legends as Earl Weaver/Stan Musial both passed away. My dad grew up in Brooklyn, says how Musial was well-liked, even amongst Dodger fans. Very popular guy. RIP, Stan the Man.

-- People in England who went to Knick-Piston game thought there were too many interruptions, not enough focus on the actual game. Really????

-- Jets hired Marty Mornhinweg as OC; he was one of worst head coaches in NFL history when he coached the Lions; good luck there, Jet fans.

-- Someone explain to me why fighting is tolerated in the NHL.

-- 37-year old Mike James is playing for the Mavericks, his 11th NBA team; now there's a guy who could write a great book.

-- The original Batmobile sold for $4.2M at an auction in Arizona. Buyer is guy who was trying to impress his (very attractive) girlfriend. Go figure.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

      13) Excellent move by ESPN putting Gonzaga-Butler as a Saturday night featured game in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse; game didn't disappoint, either.

      12) Kid on ESPN's College Gameday at Butler won tuition for a semester by draining a halfcourt shot; think State Farm pays the $18,000 tab.

      11) St Bonaventure had been 0-30 lifetime at Temple, but Bonnies ended all that with an 81-78 win in Philly- they made 11-18 behind the arc.

      10) Very quietly, Oregon is 16-2, 5-0 in Pac-12 after beating UCLA and sweeping the LA schools. Dana Altman wasn't Phil Knight's first choice to be Oregon's coach, but he may have been the best choice.

      9) Cincinnati led Marquette 29-13 at half, but needed OT to hold off the gritty Golden Eagles, 71-69. Sean Kilpatrick had 36 points for Cincinnati, in one of several TV games where neither team wore white uniforms. Whats the point of that? Marketing? Looks like an AAU tournament.

Wichita wore black at home, and Creighton wore white in that game; maybe its a marketing thing. Home team almost always wears white uniforms.

      8) Syracuse won at Louisville, in what would've been the game of the day except for the Gonzaga-Butler thriller. Brandon Triche made 5-7 behind the arc, scored 23 points to fuel the upset.

      7) Belmont stayed unbeaten in the OVC, but North Dakota State lost at Western Illinois, creating a tie atop the Summit League, in some of better mid-major action Saturday.

      6) Texas Longhorns hadn't been 0-3 in Big X play since '98; now they're 0-4 after losing 64-59 at home to Kansas, a game Texas led by 11 with 14:50 left to play. Longhorns get PG Myck Kabongo eligible February 12, but in meantime, they need some quality wins, or else Kabongo will wind up as MVP of the NIT in March.

      5) A record 73 football players left college early to apply for the '13 NFL Draft; not all of these people are going to be drafted. You just hope they got sound advice. Greedy hangers-on can screw up a kid's career.

      4) Understatement of the Day: "We live in an impatient society." Charles Barkley, during his appearance on ESPNU during Kentucky-Auburn game. He also called sports agents "scumbags" on air. Outstanding.

      3) Halftime score in Laramie: Wyoming 20, San Diego State 9, and Aztecs were a top 25 team when the week began. Game ended 58-45; MWC is one tough league. Fresno State might be worst team, and they ain't terrible.

      2) There were three terrific games on TV at 4:00; Syracuse-Louisville, Oregon-UCLA and Creighton-Wichita State; hard to keep track of end of all three games, but was fun trying.

      1) In his great major league career, Stan Musial had 3,630 hits; 1,815 on the road, 1.815 at home. Tremendously consistent player.

Thunder at Nuggets: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Denver Nuggets (+1, 209.5)

After receiving another reminder as to how special Kevin Durant is, the Oklahoma City Thunder will continue a season-long six-game road trip Sunday night in Denver. Durant started the trip in historic fashion, scoring a career-high 52 points in an overtime win at Dallas on Friday. That gave Oklahoma City six straight victories, including four in a row away from home. Durant recorded the first 50-point game in the NBA this season and hit the decisive basket with 16.9 seconds left.

It was not Durant but rather Russell Westbrook (32 points) who did the bulk of the work in ending the Nuggets' six-game winning streak Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. Denver was unable to recover from the 20-point loss as it returned home to fall to lowly Washington on Friday, 112-108. That made it three straight games that opponents have scored at least 110 points against the Nuggets, who are one of seven NBA teams who allow 100 points or more per game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (32-8, 24-14-2 ATS): Durant's 52-point performance was largely done from the line. He hit all 21 of his attempts from the charity stripe, helping to offset a somewhat lackluster 13-for-31 (41.9 percent) effort from the floor. Westbrook added 31 points as the star tandem continued to shine for head coach Scott Brook's Western Conference-leading squad, which is now 20-4 when both Durant and Westbrook reach the 20-point mark. The Thunder visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday in a matchup of the top two teams in the conference.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (24-18, 23-19-0 ATS): One reason for Oklahoma City's rout of Denver on Wednesday was the Thunder's ability to limit standout guard Ty Lawson. However, Lawson broke out two nights later with a blistering second half, albeit in a losing effort against Washington. He scored 27 of his 29 points after the break but had a layup blocked in the waning moments, denying Denver of the tying points. Lawson had two points and four turnovers in 20 minutes against Oklahoma City two nights earlier.

          TRENDS:

          * Under is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings in Denver.
          * Thunder are 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings in Denver.
          * Under is 8-3-1 in the last 12 meetings.
          * Road team is 5-1-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Thunder F Serge Ibaka had his eighth double-double (11 points, 14 rebounds) in the win over Dallas.

          2. Oklahoma City G Thabo Sefolosha was 0-for-4 from the field in 25 minutes against the Mavericks, going scoreless for just the second time this season. However, he posted a team-high plus-11 rating.

          3. Even with the loss to Washington, Denver has the third-best home record in the Western Conference at 15-3.

Pucks for bucks: NHL betting crash course
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL is finally back after a long and painful lockout.

If you’re playing catch-up with the hockey handicapping check out these helping links below. Not only do we have previews for all six divisions but we also dig into some NHL betting strategies for the shortened 48-game season.

The NHL schedule has officially been released, which means we can begin to look at some puck value. Before we dig into the schedule (which we’ll do more in-depth this week) here are three items to keep in mind when betting this shortened 48-game season.

Now that the NHL lockout is officially over bettors can now begin assessing team win totals for the upcoming season.

There are a few surprises in early NHL futures action

It didn't take long for NHL bettors to pick their darling underdog to win the Stanley Cup this season. And that dog's name is Edmonton.

NHL Southeast Division betting preview and odds

This division has long been scoffed at as the 'South-least' and the Stanley Cup odds for each team listed below don't suggest it will be shaking that title anytime soon. There is promise in Winnipeg and Carolina though, thanks to some key offseason moves.

NHL Pacific Division betting preview and odds

The Phoenix Coyotes were top dogs in the Pacific last season after being the proverbial underdog for what seems like an eternity. But they weren’t the only Cinderella team to prevail out of the Pacific. The Kings made a historic Stanley Cup run as the No. 8 seed in the West and are in good position to defend their title this year.

NHL Northwest Division betting preview and odds

The Vancouver Canucks have dominated for the Northwest Division for four consecutive seasons and are poised to do it again this year. However, the Canucks will be looking over their shoulder at the beefed-up Minnesota Wild, who signed coveted free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in the offseason.

NHL Central Division betting preview and odds

The St. Louis Blues rode the formidable goaltending duo of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott to a Central Division title last season. Four teams from this division made the playoffs last year and the Central figures to be one of the most competitive divisions against this year. The Red Wings, Predators and Blackhawks round out this year’s playoff contending teams, with the Blue Jackets once again playing the role as the beating post.

NHL Northeast Division betting preview and odds

The Bruins have been a popular bet to reclaim the Stanley Cup from a couple seasons ago at several sportsbooks. This division is expected to be stronger this year though after the Sens had a great season last year and many are anticipating a breakout campaign from the Sabres. That said, most divisions can only dream of having two teams in complete rebuilding mode like the Leafs and Habs are.

NHL Atlantic Division betting preview and odds

The Atlantic Division is not for the faint of heart. Three of the top six Stanley Cup favorites reside here (Pittsburgh, Rangers, Philadelphia) along with last year's Stanley Cup runner-up (New Jersey).

Penguins at Rangers: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers (-115, 5.5)

After defeating one Atlantic Division rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins will look to topple another on Sunday when they face the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Penguins exacted a bit of revenge for their first-round playoff exit last season with a 3-1 triumph over Philadelphia on Saturday. Tyler Kennedy and James Neal scored 2:40 apart in the first period and Marc-Andre Fleury set a franchise record with his 227th victory.

New York was on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision, courtesy of Original Six rival Boston on Saturday. Prize offseason acquisition Rick Nash notched an assist and Henrik Lundqvist made a few stunning saves in their loss to the Bruins. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner is just 2-4-2 in his last eight meetings with Pittsburgh.

TV: 7 p.m., NHLN, ROOT (Pittsburgh), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (1-0-0): Although Fleury was solid on Saturday, the team announced that Tomas Vokoun will get the nod against the Rangers. The veteran netminder has fared well versus New York, winning six of his last nine outings (6-2-1) while registering a slim 2.27 goals-against average in 19 career contests. Captain Sidney Crosby was held off the scoresheet in the season opener, but has 57 points (20 goals, 37 assists) in 40 career games versus New York.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (0-1-0): Although he struggled to find chemistry with Marian Gaborik last season, Brad Richards took a step forward on Saturday by scoring his team's lone goal. Unfortunately for coach John Tortorella's club, it couldn't generate any offense on its five power-play opportunities - including a 90-second 5-on-3 situation in the third. "If we score a goal there ... it definitely hurts momentum," captain Ryan Callahan said.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Over is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings in New York.
                      * Penguins are 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                      * Road team is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings.
                      * Rangers are 0-4 in their last four vs. Eastern Conference foes.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. Pittsburgh's penalty killers thwarted all five shorthanded situations versus Philadelphia.

                      2. After a sizzling postseason, Chris Kreider played his first official regular-season game on Saturday. The 21-year-old was held without a shot in 16 shifts.

                      3. The Penguins have outscored the Rangers by a 16-5 margin en route to winning the last four contests.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Jan. 13-19

                        Hottest ATS team

Washington Wizards (2-2 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Wizards have covered in six straigh gamest and eight of their last nine. The return of PG John Wall (knee) from injury has helped bolster the offense and Washington hasn’t been getting much respect from oddsmakers lately. The Wizards covered as double-digit dogs in their last two games at Denver and Los Angeles. Despite their horrendous SU record of 8-30, Washington has been a good bet with a 22-14-2 ATS mark.

                        Coldest ATS team

Houston Rockets (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

The Rockets have dropped seven straight overall, failing to cover in each of those contests. Houston hasn’t had any issues scoring, but its matador team defense (30th allowing 103.5 ppg) is a major cause for concern. The Rockets were the hottest over bet in the Association out of the gates but oddsmakers are catching on, setting most of their totals well above 200 the past few weeks. Houston has a good chance to stop the bleeding Monday in Charlotte.

                        Best over team

                        Toronto Raptors (0-4 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Raptors finished 2012 on an absolute tear, but they’re settling back into reality in January. Toronto has dropped four straight overall, smashing the totals in those contests. The Raptors have allowed an average of 108.7 points per game during the skid, but keep in mind two of those contests went to overtime. Toronto has a tough start to this week. The Raps host the Lakers Sunday afternoon before heading to Miami for a showdown with the Heat on Wednesday.

                        Best under team

                        San Antonio Spurs (4-0 SU, 0-4 over/under)

The Spurs’ roster may be aging, but the grizzled vets sure aren’t slacking on the defensive end. San Antonio allowed opponents to score an average of 87.7 points this past week, 8.4 points less than its season average of 96.1. The Spurs have a chance to really pull away from the pack in the West in the next couple weeks as their next eight opponents are all currently sub-.500 teams.

                        Scouting the schedule:

-The Philadelphia 76ers play 10 of their next 11 games at the friendly confines of the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers begin a season-long eight-game homestand when they host the Knicks Saturday. Philadelphia boasts a 16-4 over mark at home this season.

                        - The Detroit Pistons are back on American soil after their much-anticipated date with the Knicks across the pond in England last week. The Pistons had a few days to rest after Thursday’s loss but now play five games in seven nights, including tough stops in Chicago and Miami.

Correction for post #1: Ford Frick didn't speak those words at Stan's induction. He used them at Stan's retirement ceremony in 1963.
