Red Wings at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks (-134, 5.5)

The Chicago Blackhawks attempt to set a franchise record with their sixth consecutive victory to start the season when they host the Central Division-rival Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Chicago edged the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 on Saturday to match the 1971-72 club for the best start in franchise history. Four of the Blackhawks' five wins have come on the road, where they play their next six games following Sunday's contest.

Detroit is coming off a 5-3 home victory over the Minnesota Wild on Friday. Todd Bertuzzi scored twice in his season debut while Pavel Datsyuk added a goal and two assists as the Red Wings finally broke through on the power play, tallying twice on five opportunities. They had gone 0-for-15 with the man advantage over their first three games of the campaign.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN (Detroit), CSN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (2-2-0): Detroit played without three of its top six defensemen on Friday. Jonathan Ericsson and Carlo Colaiacovo were out with a shoulder injury while Ian White missed the contest with a lacerated leg. The Red Wings did get a player back on the blue line, however, as Jakub Kindl returned from a groin injury to make his season debut. Bertuzzi missed the first three games of the season with the flu, although he initially was diagnosed with mononucleosis.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (5-0-0): Right wing Jamal Mayers played in his second consecutive game after being scratched for Chicago's first three contests. The rugged Mayers saw only 4:44 of ice time on seven shifts and was involved in a fight with Columbus' Jared Boll in the second period. "I'm not going to change how I've played for the last 17 years," Mayers said. "I'm just going to play hard and keep it simple and skate and do the things I've done my whole career."

    TRENDS:

    * Blackhawks are 5-0 in their last five overall.
    * Red Wings are 1-4 in their last five vs. Central foes.
    * Under is 6-0 in the last six meetings.
    * Under is 4-0 in Blackhawks’ last four home games.

    OVERTIME:

    1. The Blackhawks went 4-0-2 against the Red Wings last season, earning 10 of a possible 12 points.

    2. Detroit C Darren Helm also made his season debut Friday after missing the first three contests with a back injury.

    3. Chicago has lost to Detroit in regulation just once in the last 11 meetings between the Original Six rivals.

Marleau is the second player in NHL history to open a season with four straight multi-goal games. The Sharks play the third contest of a six-game home stand Sunday when they host the Canucks. Anaheim, Edmonton and Nashville will also visit San Jose this week.

                  Cold team

Washington Capitals (0-3-1-0 SU, 1-3 ATS)

The Capitals are the only team in the NHL yet to score a win (prior to Sunday). Alex Ovechkin is goalless in the first four games and Washington is allowing a league-worst 4.2 goals per game. The Caps go for win No. 1 Sunday when they host Buffalo and then head to Ontario for road games in Ottawa and Toronto.

                  Over play

                  Phoenix Coyotes (1-4 SU, 5-0 over/under)

Goaltender Mike Smith suffered a lower body injury in Wednesday’s game against the Blue Jackets, leaving Jason LaBarbera as the replacement in goal. The journeyman has a save percent of .897 in relief and the Coyotes are averaging 3.4 goals per game – the eighth best mark in the league. Smith is questionable for Monday’s clash with the Predators.

                  Under play

                  Nashville Predators (1-1-0-3 SU, 1-4 over/under)

It’s no surprise to bettors that Nashville has begun the campaign as a solid under play. Barry Trotz employs a defensive system that revolves around stud G Pekka Rinne, who is winless despite boasting a 2.36 GAA and .912 save percentage. NHL schedule-makers have dealt the Preds a tough early slate. Nashville plays the fourth contest of a season-long seven-game road swing Monday in Phoenix.

                  Surveying the schedule:

-The Montreal Canadiens enjoy a stretch where they play six of their next seven games at the Bell Centre. The Habs make the short trip to Ottawa for their only road contest during that stretch, which is basically a home game for Montreal as its supporters are expected to make the short trip to the nation’s capital. Stud D P.K. Subban is still in a contract dispute with the team but the Montreal defense isn’t missing him, holding opponents to 1.3 goals per game.

-The Chicago Blackhawks are road warriors to begin the shortened campaign. The Blackhawks open with 10 of their first 12 games away from the United Center but are off to a red-hot 5-0 start as mentioned above. Chicago hosts Detroit Sunday before embarking on a season-long six-game road trip.

NHL game of the day: Canucks at Kings
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (-133, 5)

With their first win of the season finally behind them, the Los Angeles Kings go for two straight when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Monday. The Kings began the defense of their Stanley Cup championship with three consecutive losses, including Wednesday's overtime setback to the Edmonton Oilers on the road. Los Angeles concluded its three-game trip Saturday with a 4-2 triumph over the Phoenix Coyotes as Anze Kopitar scored his first two goals of the campaign.

Vancouver is concluding its three-game tour of California. The Canucks began the trip with a 5-0 victory over the Ducks in Anaheim on Friday before running into the red-hot San Jose Sharks on Sunday. They fell behind by two goals early and suffered a 4-1 loss, becoming the Sharks' fifth straight victim to start the season. Captain Henrik Sedin failed to record a point, leaving him six away from surpassing Markus Naslund (756) as Vancouver's all-time leader.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TSN, FSN West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (2-2-1): Alex Edler has 22 career power-play goals, tying him with Doug Lidster and Ed Jovanovski for sixth place on the franchise list among defensemen. Vancouver proved hockey is a game of inches on Sunday. The club managed just one goal against San Jose but easily could have had six as it hit the post four times and rang one shot off the crossbar. "We had some looks, we hit some posts," said left wing Alex Burrows, who scored the team's lone goal. "At the end of the day, we have to score some goals on our power play." The Canucks went 0-for-7 with the man advantage.

ABOUT THE KINGS (1-2-1): Los Angeles would receive a much-needed boost if its power play began clicking. The Kings failed to cash in on four opportunities Saturday and are 0-for-23 thus far this season, making them the only team in the league without a man-advantage goal. After hosting the Nashville Predators on Thursday, Los Angeles plays eight of its next nine games away from the Staples Center. It begins a five-game road trip in Anaheim on Saturday. The trek continues through Columbus, Nashville, Detroit and St. Louis before the Kings return home to entertain the Blue Jackets on Feb. 15. They then go back on the road for games in Chicago, Edmonton and Calgary.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Canucks are 1-4 in their last five vs. a team with a losing record.
                      * Under is 4-0 in Canucks’ last four overall.
                      * Under is 7-0 in Kings’ last seven games following a win.
                      * Kings are 4-0 in their last four Monday games.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. Canucks coach Alain Vigneault is two victories away from 400 for his career.

                      2. Kings LW Kyle Clifford is riding a career-high four-game point streak.

                      3. Burrows passed Dennis Vervegaert and Alex Mogilny for 14th place on Vancouver's all-time list with his 140th goal.
