    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- VCU beat St Joe's 92-86 in OT, in a terrific game; Rams and Butler have yet to lose in their new league, the Atlantic 16.

-- Belmont stayed unbeaten in its first season in the OVC, beating Eastern Kentucky 83-76 in Nashville, handing EKU its first OVC loss.

-- USC, Florida State are only college teams with three 7-footers.

-- Detroit blew a 50-32 halftime lead, lost 89-88 at home to Valparaiso in a meeting of two of the Horizon League's better teams.

-- Illinois is 2-5 in last seven games after a 12-0 start; Illini got thumped at home by 11-point underdog Northwestern 68-54.

-- Miami beat the Lakers 99-90 at Staples Center; lot of ball in LA last night, with UCLA/USC/Lakers all playing at home. Heat outscored LA 9-0 over the last 2:12.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

    13) Michigan Wolverines won 83-75 at Minnesota, in game that wasn't that close; hard to believe Michigan was behind 29-8 at Ohio State Sunday- they've got lot of well-coached, skilled players.

    12) Amare Stoudemire scored 17 points in 20 minutes for the Knicks in their 102-87 win over the Pistons in London.

    11) Auburn lost in double OT at Arkansas Wednesday; they were 7-17 from the foul line. Little things make a big difference.

    10) South Dakota State's Nate Wolters went over the 2,000-point mark in the Jackrabbits' 59-53 win at Western Illinois.

    9) Note to people who direct basketball games on TV; if clock is running in last 10:00 of a close game, never take the camera off the ball. Ever.

    8) Syracuse is retiring Carmelo Anthony's jersey; he went to school there for one semester, but he did win them a national title and paid for their new practice facility. Wonder if he knows where the library is?

    7) Looks like Giancarlo Stanton is only member of my fantasy team in the World Baseball Classic; have to hold my breath he doesn't tweak his hammy running out a grounder against Bulgaria or Guatemala, or whoever they have in that tournament.

    6) Good news about the WBC: no A's, no respect, no distractions.

    5) No righthanded hitter hit a homer to right field at Safeco Field LY; Mike Morse had 12 HRs to rightfield LY, so he could help Seattle there.

    4) Doesn't look good for expanded use of instant replay in baseball this summer; too bad, they could use it.

    3) A few days after the A's gave Bob Melvin a contract extension, Orioles did the same for Buck Showalter. What took them so long?

    2) Serious question: If you ran an NFL team, would all this drama around Manti Te'o change how you rated him as a pro prospect?

    1) Idaho State's Chris Hansen drained an 88-footer at the first half buzzer to cut Sacramento State's lead to 31-23; Bengals came back to win beat the Hornets by a point-- bad loss for a veteran Sacramento team.

NHL Central Division betting preview and odds

The St. Louis Blues rode the formidable goaltending duo of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott to a Central Division title last season. Four teams from this division made the playoffs last year and the Central figures to be one of the most competitive divisions against this year. The Red Wings, Predators and Blackhawks round out this year’s playoff contending teams, with the Blue Jackets once again playing the role as the beating post.

Below is a bettor's glance at each team along with some thoughts from Covers Expert Sean Murphy, which you can also find in his weekly NHL Power Rankings. Over/under season win total odds are from SportsInteraction.

      CENTRAL DIVISION

      St. Louis Blues

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 14/1
      Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 49-22-1-10, 35-47, 21-43-18
      Season over/under win total: 27.5
      Covers Power Ranking: 7th
Key betting note: The Blues lead the league in goals against (1.9), shots against (26.7) and shutouts last season (15), resulting in an excellent O/U record (21-43-18)

      Murph’s take:
“The pieces are in place for the Blues to make a run. This is a young team, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in today's NHL, especially when you're led by an accomplished head coach like Ken Hitchcock. In a shortened season, the Blues could be an excellent sleeper.”

      Chicago Blackhawks

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 10/1
      Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 45-26-4-7, 38-44, 42-39-1
      Season over/under win total: 25.5
      Covers Power Ranking: 6th
Key betting note: The Blackhawks were a solid moneyline bet at home last season. Chicago cruised to a 27-8-1-5 mark at the United Center.

      Murph’s take:
“The Blackhawks are loaded with talent, but haven't been able to regain the form that saw them bring home the Stanley Cup three years ago. Goaltending remains a big issue, with the inconsistent duo of Ray Emery and Corey Crawford being relied upon.”

      Detroit Red Wings

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 18/1
      Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 48-28-3-3, 39-43, 34-44-4
      Season over/under win total: 27.5
      Covers Power Ranking: 8th
Key betting note: The Red Wings were the second-best under play in the league last year (34-44-4 O/U) but they won't have stud defenseman Nick Lidstrom to take care of business on the back end this year.

      Murph’s take:
“The post-Nick Lidstrom era begins in Detroit. The Red Wings aren't getting any younger, but Ken Holland always ices a competitive team, and this year will be no different. The Wings will find a way to contend for top spot in the West once again.”

      Nashville Predators

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 28/1
      Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 48-26-3-5, 44-38, 34-39-9
      Season over/under win total: 22
      Covers Power Ranking: 21st
Key betting note: According to the Covers NHL statistics database, the Preds were the third-most profitable team last season if you wagered to win $100 on each of their games.

      Murph’s take:
“Credit the Preds for at least holding on to Shea Weber. This is never going to be a team that wins on talent alone. Gritty play will once again be the norm, as Nashville looks to get over the hump in a crowded Western Conference.”

      Columbus Blue Jackets

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 200/1
      Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 29-46-2-5, 44-38, 40-39-3
      Season over/under win total: 17
      Covers Power Ranking: 30th
Key betting note: Columbus finished last season on a 5-1 puckline run and was surprisingly a good bet overall last season (44-38 ATS).

      Murph’s take:
“Rick Nash is gone, and so are the Blue Jackets' hopes of contending in the next 3-5 years. The cupboard isn't bare, but don't be surprised if the goaltending situation gets worse before it gets better.”

Warriors at Spurs: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs (-12, 203)

After jumping out to a hot start as one of the surprise teams in the league, the Golden State Warriors have hit their first rough patch. Friday's visit to the San Antonio Spurs, who have won 13 straight at home, is going to make it difficult to pull out of the slump. The Warriors have dropped four of their last five and hope to have Stephen Curry back from an ankle injury by Friday.

The Spurs own the best home record in the NBA at 17-2 and have won their last two at AT&T Center by an average of 19.5 points. Manu Ginobili will miss his second straight game on Friday due to a hamstring strain but the Spurs did not appear to miss their sixth man in a 103-82 won over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. Golden State has lost back-to-back games but has yet to drop three in a row this season. To avoid that third straight setback, the Warriors will need to win in San Antonio for the first time since 1997.

                  TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, CSBA (Golden State), FSSW (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (23-14, 20-16-1 ATS):
Golden State has dropped 15 straight overall to the Spurs and 27 in a row at San Antonio. Curry, who stepped on a teammate’s foot and rolled his ankle in practice on Wednesday morning, is listed as day-to-day. Without their top scorer available against the Miami Heat on Wednesday, the Warriors went down early and were blown out 92-75 at home. Jarrett Jack moved into Curry’s starting spot, weakening what has been a very strong bench. The lack of offense has been a big problem during the recent slump as Golden State has failed to reach 90 points in three of its last four setbacks. The Warriors’ struggles are coming during a long stretch against top competition, with the Denver Nuggets, Memphis and Los Angeles Clippers marking the other three recent defeats. Golden State still has to face the Clippers, Oklahoma City and the Chicago Bulls as part of five games in eight days.

ABOUT THE SPURS (30-11, 24-16-1 SU):
Four of the last five teams to come to the AT&T Center have failed to reach 90 points as San Antonio continues to improve its defense. The Spurs held the Grizzlies to 26.6 percent in the second half of Wednesday’s triumph and limited the Minnesota Timberwolves to 37.1 percent in Sunday’s 106-88 win. Ginobili is expected to miss up to two weeks with the hamstring strain but San Antonio has the pieces to cover a short absence. Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal each got over 20 minutes off the bench on Wednesday and Boris Diaw received some extra time as part of a bigger lineup. The Spurs are closing out a three-game homestand with the Warriors and will play three of their next four on the road beginning Saturday at Atlanta.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Favorite is 20-6-2 ATS in the last 28 meetings.
                  * Over is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.

                  * Warriors are 5-16 ATS in the last 21 meetings in San Antonio.

                  BUZZER BEATERS:

                  1. Spurs G Tony Parker has averaged 18.8 points on 51.7 percent shooting and seven assists in 38 career games against the Warriors.

                  2. Golden State F David Lee has recorded four straight double-doubles.

                  3. San Antonio is 3-2 without Ginobili this season.
