Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- UNLV shot 52% from floor, won 82-75 at San Diego State, its first win at Viejas Arena in last five tries. High level game.

-- New Mexico won 79-74 at Boise State; Lobos are lone unbeaten left in the Mountain West.

-- St Mary's came back from down 20-4 to win 70-69 at BYU; solid win.

-- Colorado slipped to 1-4 in Pac-12 with 64-54 loss at Washington; coach Boyle called out his Buffs publicly after Saturday's loss- it didn't work.

-- NC State can't stand prosperity; they fell behind 10-0 at Maryland, lost 51-50 at the buzzer. Whenever they beat Duke/Carolina, they usually lose the next game-- something like 23 of last 24 times.

-- Same thing for Evansville, which upset Wichita State Sunday, then laid an egg at Drake Wednesday, losing 83-69 to the woeful Bulldogs.

13) Is it too late to go back to Titleist clubs? Rory McIlroy shot +3 in his first round with his new Nike sticks, while paired with Eldrick Woods, who shot even par. Thursday's leaders probably didn't get appearance fees, like McIlroy and Woods generally do overseas.

12) Terry Francona has a book coming out on Tuesday, about his days managing the Red Sox (hopefully he also has some stuff about managing the Birmingham Barons when Michael Jordan played there); curious to see how controversial it’ll be.

11) Since Bo Ryan has been hoop coach at Wisconsin, Badgers have seven more road wins than any other Big Dozen team.

10) ESPN announced its first 11 Sunday night games and predictably, no Oakland games. Typical morons; of course both New York teams are on, the Rangers are on multiple times. Do the nitwits at ESPN even know the A’s won their division last year?

Its not that important but it boils down to respect, or lack thereof.

9) A's-Mariners-Nationals made a 3-way trade Wednesday, with Mariners getting Michael Morse, A's getting John Jaso and Washington shedding Morse's contract, while replenishing its farm system somewhat.

8) Whoever invented the sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on an English muffin should get a sizeable raise, and a spot in the Sandwich Hall of Fame, if there is such a thing (and there should be).

7) Four NBA teams have had both the league’s leading scorer and the league’s leading rebounder that year; all four teams won 50+ games. Right now, the Lakers have the #1 scorer and the #1 rebounder, and they’re 17-21. Go figure.

6) Atlanta Hawks suspended leading scorer Josh Smith for a game, then showed how much they missed him by beating the Nets 109-95, just second loss in last eleven games for Brooklyn; Hawks scored 58 points in their last game- they had 56 at the half Wednesday.

5) Texas Rangers gave lefty starter Matt Harrison $55M for five years; he is 32-20 the last two years, while tossing 399 innings.

4) New York Rangers' coach John Tortorella told WFAN Wednesday that he expects play to be sloppy when games start Saturday; he also said a coach would normally want at least a couple weeks to get his team ready to play, but what he got was six days. What a way to run a business.

3) Chip Kelly changed his mind and bolts from Oregon to the Eagles; does that mean Ducks are going on probation, or did Kelly just change his mind?

2) Chicago Bears signed QB guru Marc Trestman as its head coach, a typical 180-degree change from its previous coach; Jay Cutler has his fourth OC in last five years. Now the Bears needs a strong defensive coordinator.

1) Its was 100+ degrees in Australia Thursday at tennis tournament; send some of that heat this way, mates. This snow/slush stuff is for the birds.

NHL Northeast Divsion betting preview

The Bruins have been a popular bet to reclaim the Stanley Cup from a couple seasons ago at several sportsbooks. This division is expected to be stronger this year though after the Sens had a great season last year and many are anticipating a breakout campaign from the Sabres. That said, most divisions can only dream of having two teams in complete rebuilding mode like the Leafs and Habs are.

Below is a bettor's glance at each team along with some thoughts from Covers Expert Sean Murphy, which you can also find in his weekly NHL Power Rankings. Over/under season win total odds are from SportsInteraction.

NORTHEAST DIVISION

Boston Bruins

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 11-1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 49-29-1-3, 35-47, 46-33-3
Season over/under win total: 28.5
Covers Power Ranking: 4th
Key betting note: Tied with Philly as the 2nd-highest scoring team in the NHL last season (3.17 goals per game). Also went 32-0 when leading after the 2nd period.

Murph’s take:
“Boston suffered a Stanley Cup hangover last season, but should bounce back strong in the shortened 2013 campaign. The play of Tuukka Rask in goal will be key, as he takes over for Tim Thomas.”


Buffalo Sabres

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 28-1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 39-32-4-7, 33-49, 35-41-8
Season over/under win total: 24.5
Covers Power Ranking: 13th
Key betting note: Buffalo went 30-21-4 with defenseman Tyler Myers in the lineup last year and 9-11-7 without him due to injury.

Murph’s take:
“The Sabres just haven't been able to get over the hump in recent years, but there's no question, this is a team loaded with talent, depth, and an all-world goaltender in Ryan Miller. A shortened season could benefit them a great deal, although playing the majority of their schedule against Northeast Division foes will be tough.”


Ottawa Senators

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 45-1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 41-31-6-4, 47-35, 42-38-2
Season over/under win total: 23.5
Covers Power Ranking: 17th
Key betting note: 2nd most profitable team in the East on the puckline last season behind only Pittsburgh.

Murph’s take:
“The Sens ran into a tough opening round playoff matchup against the Rangers last year, but that didn't take anything away from what was a surprisingly good season. The building blocks are there, but playing in a tough Northeast Division could be their downfall.”


Montreal Canadiens

Odds to win Stanley Cup: 40-1
Last season’s record (SU, ATS, O/U): 31-35-4-12, 47-35, 31-41-10
Season over/under win total: 22
Covers Power Ranking: 24th
Key betting note: Montreal had the fewest wins vs. the Eastern Conference last season (24) of all Eastern Conference teams.

Murph’s take:
“Montreal is hungry for a winner these days. Very hungry. I'm not convinced that Michel Therrien is the answer behind the bench, but I've been proven wrong before. It looks like the Habs are a couple of pieces away from icing a playoff team.”


Toronto Maple Leafs

LeBron James is fresh off becoming the youngest player in NBA history to reach 20,000 career points as he leads the Miami Heat into Thursday’s contest against the host Los Angeles Lakers. James had 25 points and 10 rebounds in Wednesday’s 92-75 victory over the Golden State Warriors. The superstar reached the milestone at 28 years, 17 days old. The previous fastest was Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, who did it at 29 years and 122 days.

Los Angeles has a modest two-game winning streak after losing its previous six contests. The Lakers won games over the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks by a combined 36 points. In his second game back from a shoulder injury, center Dwight Howard contributed 31 points and 16 rebounds in Tuesday’s win over the Bucks. Miami is 2-3 on a six-game road swing that ends against the Lakers. The Heat return for two home games and then head right back out for four more road tilts.

For some programs, the move has paid off - and not just for the team. Bettors are seeing the benefits of the new coaching. However, other teams are struggling to adapt to new systems and philosophies, dragging bettors down with them.

Here’s a look at three teams thriving ATS and three struggling to cover the spread under their new head coach:

Best new coaches ATS

Donnie Tyndall – Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (13-4 SU, 10-4 ATS)

Tyndall has the Golden Eagles on top of C-USA and is making Southern Miss backers happy after former coach Larry Eustachy, who took the job at Colorado State, posted a 12-18 ATS record last season. The Golden Eagles have been tough away from Hattiesburg, going 5-3 ATS on the road.

Keno Davis – Central Michigan Chippewas (8-8 SU, 10-5 ATS)

Central Michigan lost star recruit Tyler Zeigler to transfer (Pitt) and then canned Zeigler’s dad, head coach Ernie Zeigler, after an 11-21 record (14-16-1 ATS) last season. The Chippewas rolled the dice on Davis, and so far it’s paid off – at least for bettors.

Dave Pilipovich - Air Force Falcons (9-5 SU, 6-3 ATS)

Pilipovich, an assistant under fired head coach Jeff Reynolds, has Air Force contending in the stacked MWC. The Falcons covered versus Florida in December and just missed an upset win over UNLV, losing in OT last weekend. Air Force is one of the better 3-point shooting teams in the country – always music to bettor’s ears.


Worst new coaches ATS

Jerod Haase – UAB Blazers (8-9 SU, 4-10 ATS)

Haase, an assistant at North Carolina, has tried to instill an up-tempo offense at UAB (73.6 points per game) but forgot about the defensive side of the playbook (299th in the country). The Blazers have been good at home (7-1 SU) but dismal on the road (1-6 SU).

Tony Benford - North Texas Mean Green (7-11 SU, 4-9 ATS)

Benford, an assistant at Marquette, inherited a contender in the Sun Belt when Johnny Jones took the job at LSU. However, the Mean Green have fallen short of those expectations under their new head coach. Injuries and the disappointing play of star forward Tony Mitchell is to blame.

Jay Spoonhour - Eastern Illinois Panthers (3-15 SU, 4-9 ATS)

The Panthers have lost 11 straight heading into Thursday’s date with OVC power Murray State, covering the spread in two of the nine lined games during that span. Spoonhour hasn’t had it easy in Charleston, inheriting no starters and having to rely on a slew of new players. That’s the big reason EIU is among the worst offensive teams in the country - 56.7 points per game

(5) Michigan Wolverines at (12) Minnesota Golden Gophers (-3)

Both the Wolverines and Golden Gophers are coming off their first losses in league play. Michigan was the last unbeaten team in the country and had the inside track on gaining the No. 1 ranking before it suffered a 56-53 setback at Ohio State on Sunday, producing its worst offensive output since last Jan. 29, also at the Buckeyes. The Wolverines averaged 90.2 points over a five-game stretch before producing 62 against Nebraska and 53 against Ohio State. Despite a furious second-half rally that nearly erased a 23-point halftime deficit, Minnesota lost at Indiana on Saturday, 88-81. Michigan is Minnesota's fourth ranked opponent in the last five games. The Golden Gophers are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games vs. Big Ten opponents.

(9) Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies (+9.5)

Texas A&M, hot off an outstanding performance at Kentucky last Saturday, takes a four-game win streak into its first contest against a ranked team. Elston Turner was named National Player of the Week after his 40-point explosion, including six 3-pointers, in the 83-71 victory against Kentucky. The senior guard will have to come up with another big effort against the Gators, who allow an average of 52 points and 36.5 percent shooting from the field. Florida has also won four straight, winning its first two league games by 33 and 22 points despite injury problems. Second-leading scorer Mike Rosario, who missed the last game with an ankle sprain, is expected to return to the lineup. The Aggies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 home games.

Northwestern Wildcats at (22) Illinois Fighting Illini (-10.5)

Illinois started the season with 12 consecutive victories but has now lost four of six games. The 1-3 start in Big Ten play includes back-to-back thumpings by Minnesota (17 points) and Wisconsin (23). Northwestern is also is off to a 1-3 conference start and those losses have been by an average of 22 points. Illinois has won 21 of the past 25 meetings, but the teams split two meetings last season with the road team winning on each occasion. The Fighting Illini are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games following a loss.

Oregon State Beavers at (25) UCLA Bruins (-14.5)

UCLA will try to start 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 2003-04 when the Bruins host Oregon State. The Bruins have won nine in a row overall and been especially tough to beat in nail-biters this season, owning a 6-1 record in games decided by four points or less. Oregon State will be without forward Eric Moreland for this one. Moreland is the sixth-leading rebounder in the nation (11.1) and will miss his third straight game for violating team rules. The Beavers are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at (3) Duke Blue Devils (-16.5)

Duke looks to rebound from its first loss of the season when Georgia Tech visits. The Blue Devils were without third-leading scorer Ryan Kelly (foot) in the 84-76 loss at North Carolina State last Saturday and second-leading scorer Seth Curry sprained his ankle late in the contest. Kelly is out indefinitely with a foot injury and Curry is expected to return against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets shoot 42.1 percent from the field and average 65.5 points. They can be difficult to defend at times with four players averaging between 11 and nine points. Duke is 1-7 ATS in its last eight vs. ACC foes.

St. Joseph’s Hawks at (19) VCU Rams (-10)

The Rams have won 11 straight behind an aggressive defense. VCU hasn't allowed an opponent to score more than 70 points this season and leads the country in turnover margin (plus-8.6) and steals (13.2) - a stat the Rams also led last season. The Rams have nine double-digit victories during their current 11-game win streak and are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games.

(8) Gonzaga Bulldogs at Portland Pilots (+16.5)

The Bulldogs have won seven consecutive games and are coming off an 83-78 conference-showdown victory over Saint Mary’s. Junior forward Kelly Olynyk scored 31 points against Saint Mary’s to follow up a 33-point outing against Santa Clara. Portland is playing at home for the first time since Dec. 29 and is 6-2 on its home floor. The Pilots notched a 68-64 road win over Loyola Marymount last Saturday but have lost 18 straight games against Gonzaga.
