    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Clippers went to Memphis, Chris Paul didn't play but they still waxed the Grizzlies 99-73. Impressive win.

-- Miami Heat fell to 8-9 on the road, losing 104-97 at Utah.

-- Halftime score: Chicago 48, Atlanta 20. In the NBA? Wow. Game ended up 97-58 Bulls. Hawks are a pretty good team (21-16), too.

-- Durant/Westbrook combined for 77 of the Thunder's 102 points, as they beat the Suns 102-90 in Phoenix.

-- Kansas held Baylor to 23.2% (13-56) from floor in easy 61-44 win, but star player McLemore tweaked his ankle late in the game and left.

-- Louisville was down 29-19 early, but pulled away late and got solid win at UConn, 73-58. If NCAAs started today, Louisville is Final Four team.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Very early Super Bowl lines, with the four possible matchups:
Patriots would be -2 over the 49ers, -6 over Atlanta.
Ravens would be 3.5-point underdogs if the Harbaugh brothers meet; they’d be 1.5-point underdogs if they played Atlanta.

    12) Last time the 49ers won a road playoff game was in ’89 in Chicago; backup QB for the Bears that day was Jim Harbaugh.

    11) SI.com pointed out today that the average NFL game this season had 694.4 total yards; the four playoff games this weekend had an average of 898.3 yards. Quite a difference from the four games that all stayed under the total last week.

    10) Why didn’t the Falcons go for two when they took 26-7 lead Sunday? Do these coaches take game management lessons? Mike Smith would be having a very unpleasant day today had the Falcons lost that game.

    9) Rory McIlroy signed a big money deal to switch from Titleist clubs to Nike; my golf expert tells me that in this day and age, should not be a huge adjustment for him with his new sticks.

    8) adidas signed Derrick Rose to 13-year, $183M endorsement deal; that’s the sneaker company, not the Bulls. Lebron James makes around $120M for 10 years on his sneaker deal. That’s why these guys play in the Olympics and these off-season tournaments, to pacify their sneaker sponsors.

    7) USC fired hoop coach Kevin O’Neill; kids want to play a faster tyle and O'Neill'steams play slow. Now Trojans need a dynamic force who can utilize the Trojans’ new facilties to keep some of LA’s high school hoop stars at home. I am told that Bruce Pearl still has two years left on his show-cause order, so he’s not an option yet, but USC is a big name that has been a sleeping giant in hoops for years. Now is the time to get the right guy and challenge UCLA on the hardwood.

    6) Oregon State started Pac-12 play 0-3, with three home losses and the President’s brother-in-law is feeling some heat in Corvallis. When you're losing with juniors/seniors on your squad, it ain’t good for your future.

    5) ESPN.com reports that baseball owners approved a rule change last week, that would allow coaches and managers to bring interpreters to the mound for conferences with foreign-born pitchers who don't speak fluent English. Just what we need, more people in on conferences.

    4) You know when a team has runners on first-and-third and pitcher fakes to third then throws to first? Thats going to be a balk this year-- it won't be a permanent rule change until the Players' Union says OK (why wouldn't they, unless its just a control thing), but it will be a rule this year.

    3) Carmelo Anthony made $18,518,574 LY; you figure he does his best to keep in shape so he can play his best at all times. Not so much; turns out he recently fasted for 15 days, no carbs, no meats.

"I haven't had a good meal in 2.5 weeks. No meats. No carbs. So competing at a high level, the body feels depleted.........its for my own sake. Sometimes in life you've got to replenish your body back up and get all the toxins out. (Get) all the things you don't need in your body out. I do this once a year, every year."

How about doing it in the offseason, when you're not getting paid?

Coaching in the NBA must be a lot of fun.

    2) Oakland A’s did the right thing and gave their excellent manager Bob Melvin a two-year contract extension; well deserved.

    1) NHL regular season is normally 80 games; 48 games is 60% of 80, so the NHL Center Ice package, at most should be 60% of what it was last year, no? Well for once, it appears as if NHL did give viewers a 40% discount, charging $15 a month for the regular season.

NBA did no much thing LY, when their season was reduced from 82 to 66 games. As for me, I get 12 days on DirecTV for free. Free is always good.

Pucking the trends: AHL betting news and notes

Check out the latest betting news and notes from the young guns in the AHL.

      Hot Team: Texas Stars

The Stars are two points out of first in the South Division after winning their last six games by a combined score of 21-8. Cristopher Nilstorp was in net for four of those wins and the lanky Swede is being rewarded for a strong AHL season by being called up to Dallas Stars training camp, where he’ll compete with Richard Bachmann for the chance to back up Kari Lehtonen.

Nilstorp’s departure leaves room for rookie Jack Campbell, who struggled over the first few months of the season but appears to have settled down. The 2010 first-round pick made 36 saves in a 3-0 win against Oklahoma City on Sunday for his second win in two starts this month.

Texas is also losing forward prospect Cody Eakin to Dallas, but the Stars’ strength this season has come from the net out, so whether or not their winning streak continues depends on Campbell.

      Cold Team: Abbotsford Heat

The Heat hoped a return to Abbotsford would halt their losing ways, but they have won one of four games since returning home. Abbotsford scored one goal in two games against Chicago on Friday and Saturday as its offense continues to sputter, with only 81 goals this season.

Losing top prospect and playmaker Sven Baertschi to Calgary won’t help the Heat’s scoring woes, which have them in a tailspin since starting the season 13-2-2-2. Abbotsford has won two of its last 10 and hasn’t had back-to-back home victories since Nov. 13 and 14.

Abbotsford has four more games to turn things around at home before the team is back on the road, where it’s 6-6-1-3.

      Surveying the schedule:

      - Hamilton will start the week against the Heat in Abbotsford on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home to host Toronto on Saturday. The Bulldogs are last in the AHL with 30 points.

      - Grand Rapids travels to Charlotte for games on Wednesday and Thursday before heading north to face Rockford on Saturday. The Griffins are 6-2-1-1 in their last 10 games and lead the Midwest Division by six points.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Study group: Tuesday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  (20) Notre Dame at St. John’s (+5.5)

The Fighting Irish's 12-game run, which included nine victories in a row at home, abruptly ended Saturday with a 65-58 loss to Connecticut. Notre Dame was outrebounded 30-22 and made just four free throws in matching its season low for scoring and falling short of establishing the program's longest winning streak in nearly 60 years. After recording an upset win at Cincinnati on Jan. 5, the Red Storm have dropped a pair at home, including a 67-51 loss to Georgetown on Saturday. The Red Storm have been held to 58 points or less in three straight contests and are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.

Northern Iowa at (10) Creighton (-13.5)

Star forward Doug McDermott scored a season-high 39 points in a 74-52 victory over Missouri State on Friday to boost Creighton’s winning streak to 10, including five straight conference games. Northern Iowa is coming off an 84-53 trouncing of Bradley and the 31-point victory was the school’s largest since joining the Missouri Valley for the 1991-92 campaign. The Panthers also matched a school record by sinking 15 3-point baskets in that contest. The Bluejays are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games overall.

                  (24) Cincinnati at DePaul (+7)

The Blue Demons will be well-rested. They have not played since a 99-78 loss at Connecticut on Jan. 8. Brandon Young scored a career-high 35 points but DePaul offered little resistance on the defensive end and was outrebounded 46-26. The Bearcats rank second nationally with 43.4 rebounds per game. They are third in the country with a total of 267 offensive boards. Cincinnati is 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings.

                  Wisconsin at (2) Indiana (-11)

Two teams with six-game winning streaks battle for first place in the Big Ten when Indiana hosts Wisconsin. Wisconsin is allowing just 50.2 points during its winning streak and only 47.7 during its three Big Ten contests. Indiana has won 18 consecutive home games and has topped 80 points 13 times. The Hoosiers play a vastly different style than Wisconsin and are averaging 87.1 points per game. Indiana is outscoring its opponents 333-166 from the free-throw line and shooting a blistering 51.1 percent from the field. The Badgers are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.

Clippers at Rockets: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets (+1, 208)

The Los Angeles Clippers turned in perhaps their most impressive performance of the season on Monday, kicking off a three-game road trip by crushing the Memphis Grizzlies without All-Star point guard Chris Paul in the lineup. Paul sat out the 99-73 rout of the Grizzlies due to a bruised right kneecap and he will be a game-time decision for Tuesday's matchup with the Houston Rockets. It was the lowest point total allowed by Los Angeles and started a stretch in which it plays 14 of 17 games away from home.

The Rockets will be happy to be back home - even if it's for only one game - after going winless on a three-game road trip to New Orleans, Boston and Philadelphia. The Rockets had won five straight prior to the recent skid and will be facing a four-game road trip following the matchup with the Clippers. The Rockets averaged 115.8 points during their five-game run but saw that total dip to 90 points in the third-game skid. In all, Houston will play 12 of 17 games away from home in January.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), Comcast SportsNet Houston

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (29-9, 23-15-0 ATS): Eric Bledsoe made his first start of the season in place of Paul and scored 14 points to go along with four assists and two steals. Reserves Jamal Crawford and Matt Barnes scored 16 points apiece and Grant Hill had eight points in his second appearance of the season as Los Angeles' bench outscored the starters 54-45. Hill played 17 minutes and went 3-of-5 from the field while collecting four rebounds and four assists. Barnes is averaging 14 points in his last four games.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (21-17, 21-16-1 ATS): While James Harden has scored at least 20 points in 20 consecutive games, backcourt mate Jeremy Lin has struggled with his outside shooting during the three-game losing streak. Lin averaged 9.3 points on the road trip while shooting 10-of-34 overall and 2-of-10 from 3-point range. Lin had hit more than one 3-pointer only twice in his last 24 games. The offensive struggles haven't affected Lin's defense - he has at least three steals in four consecutive games.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
                      * Over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings in Houston.
                      * Clippers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine vs. NBA Southwest.
                      * Rockets are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games.

                      BUZZER BEATERS:

                      1. The Clippers won all three meetings last season, including a two-point overtime victory in Houston.

                      2. The Rockets are shooting 26.1 percent (24-of-92) from behind the arc in the last three games.

                      3. Paul sat out his first game of the season. He had 16 assists in each of his two previous games.
