    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Ravens' 38-35 OT win was 4th-longest playoff game ever, and longest in 25 years, since Cleveland beat the Jets in '87.

-- NC State took 23 FTs, Duke only 12 in Wolfpack's 84-76 win Saturday in Raleigh. Mark Gottfried wasn't NC State's first choice to be coach, but he's turning out to be an excellent choice.

-- UNLV survived a gritty Air Force club, beating the 14-point underdog in OT, 76-71. Air Force's Michael Lyons is a very good player.

-- Mountain West is the #4 conference right now, trailing Big Dozen, Big East and ACC. Very deep league, no stiff teams.

-- Orlando Magic broke 10-game losing skid by upsetting Clippers in LA, but Magic has competed well; they're 5-1 vs spread in last six games.

-- NHL season starts Saturday with 13 games; Stanley Cup champ Kings open at home with the Blackhawks. It goes without saying that its stupid to play real games six days after camps open, but greed is greed.

    *****

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

    13) #1 seeds in AFC are now 3-5 in their first playoff game the last eight years, 2-8 vs spread the last ten years. #1 seeds in NFC are 1-4 SU last five years, 1-5 vs spread the last six.

Lot of pressure on those #1 seeds to take advantage of their position. You only get so any chances to host playoff games.

    12) As an NFL fan, nothing worse than losing a home playoff game, even worse than being 1-15 or 2-14 (over the last 47 years, Rams have done all of those things). Very bitter loss for the Broncos, especially the way Ravens tied the game in the last minute. Shocking would be an understatement. Not many NFL teams score two return TDs in same game and lose.

    11) Then there are the Packers, who acted like they thought it was illegal for the QB to run with the ball; Kaepernick ran for 181 yards, passed for 263 in his first playoff start, a surprisingly easy 45-31 win.

    10) I'm thinking Alex Smith can pack up his house and prepare to move to another NFL city this winter; doubt he wants to be a backup with the Niners.

    9) Good to see Brian Kelly extract money out of his employers for better salaries for some of his assistants, using the NFL as leverage; curious to see now if this will be an annual event, or if Kelly will actually jump to the NFL some day.

Would be nice if the cheap humans who run Notre Dame would throw some more money into the athletic facilities, to make Kelly's job a little easier. On second thought, I'm glad they don't.

    8) At one point Saturday, Wisconsin led Illinois 34-9; they won by 23. How does a team whack Ohio State one week and fall behind 34-9 the next?

    7) Georgetown had its worst home loss in 41 years Monday; they came out and tried to erase that memory Saturday, running out to a 36-19 halftime lead in an easy 67-51 win over a lousy St John's team.

    6) Visiting team is now 9-0 vs spread in Big East games if pointspread is five or less points- the big arenas they play in, less of a home court edge. .

    5) Miami Heat's Mario Chalmers went 10-13 behind arc as Heat crushed the Kings 128-99 in Sacramento. Going to be a rough three months for Kings if the rumors of their move to Seattle are true.

    4) Big Sky Conference has some amazing road trips; Montana played in Grand Forks, ND against the Fighting Sioux Thursday night, then played a 4:30 game Saturday in Greeley, CO, 900+ miles away- they won by 8 at Northern Colorado, are now 5-0 in conference play, but not before they fell behind by 15 right out of the gate. Tough travel for a college team.

    3) Texas A&M 83, Kentucky 71-- Elston Turner hung 40 on the Wildcats in Rupp Arena, just Calipari's second loss there. Turner's dad was a really good player at Ole Miss 30 years ago-- one of his teammates was Sean Tuohy, the real-life father in The Blind Side book/movie.

    2) Good to see veteran coach George Blaney still on UConn's bench, as an assistant to new coach Kevin Ollie as he takes over from legendary Jim Calhoun. Would've been easy for Blaney to walk when Calhoun did. He has to be a great resource for a rookie head coach.

    1) Excellent day for the Harbaugh family; John and Jim won their playoff games, and Indiana beat the Golden Gophers; Tom Crean is brother-in-law to the Harbaughs. Hoosiers led by 23 at the half, won by 7. I'm still thinking Minnesota is my darkhorse Final Four team.

There are a few surprises in early NHL futures action

It didn't take long for NHL bettors to pick their darling underdog to win the Stanley Cup this season. And that dog's name is Edmonton.

I spoke to five different sportsbooks this week - online, offshore and Las Vegas - and the Oilers were the one common denominator among them all when it came to teams seeing the most futures action so far.

"Edmonton was 35-1, then 25-1, now 22-1," says Aron Black, trades manager at bet365.com. "They are a very young team, but they have some really good young talent. They had good performances both in the AHL and at the juniors from some of their players."

A lines manager at Sports Interaction said Edmonton is the favorite futures bet from their players "by a wide margin". They have the Oilers bet down to 18-1 as a result.

The short schedule was the reason a few bookmakers cited for the Oilers drawing so much attention in spite of the fact they finished second-last in the league last year. They were the 15th youngest team in the NHL last season, but their brightest stars - Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and 2012's No. 1 draft pick, Nail Yakupov - are 22 years old or younger.

The Minnesota Wild is another popular play at several books, including the Las Vegas Hotel where they're set at 30-1. The Wild made the biggest splash in free agency this offseason by signing sniper Zach Parise and defenseman Ryan Suter to matching 13-year, $98 million deals. LVH oddsmaker Jeff Sherman said the Carolina Hurricanes are another popular long shot among their bettors at 30-1.

The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins are set as the favorites at just about every book, with 8-1 on both teams being the best I've seen at the LVH.

Vancouver (10-1), Boston (10-1) and Chicago (12-1) were among the other teams that sportsbooks said are taking the most early futures action.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Michigan at Ohio State
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes (-2)

Michigan is one of only two undefeated teams left in Division I basketball. The biggest test to the Wolverines’ undefeated record so far will come on Sunday, when they visit rival Ohio State. The 14th-ranked Buckeyes have struggled against highly-ranked opponents in the first half of the season, with each of their three losses coming against teams ranked in the top 11. Michigan has taken its first three Big Ten games by an average of 23.7 points.

The Wolverines have only played one ranked opponent so far - a 79-72 home win over then-No. 18 North Carolina State on Nov. 27 - but will be ramping up the schedule strength considerably over the next few weeks. Ohio State will put pressure on Michigan’s defense with Deshaun Thomas, who is leading the Big Ten in scoring at 20.3 points, and have a guard in Aaron Craft who is strong enough defensively to put pressure on Trey Burke.

              TV: 1:30 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT MICHIGAN (16-0, 3-0 Big Ten, 9-5 ATS): The Wolverines got to ease into the Big Ten with Northwestern, Iowa and Nebraska but will play three of its next four games on the road against ranked teams. Michigan has made it up to No. 2 in the country thanks to an efficient offense led by Burke. The sophomore point guard ranks third in the conference in scoring (18.2 points) while setting the pace for the Big Ten in assists (7.3). Tim Hardaway Jr. has put up 18.3 points over the last three contests since returning from an ankle injury, and Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III are both capable of carrying the team for stretches. The Wolverines have only allowed two opponents to reach even 70 points on the defensive end and are coming off a 62-47 win over Nebraska on Wednesday.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (12-3, 2-1, 8-5 ATS): The Buckeyes have had some trouble replacing Jared Sullinger’s presence on the inside and have Thomas averaging almost 10 more points than any other player. Thomas went for 24 points on 9-of-21 shooting but the rest of the cast shot 28.2 percent from the floor in a 74-55 loss at Illinois on Nov. 5 that knocked Ohio State out of the top 10. The Buckeyes looked like a different team three days later in a 74-64 win at Purdue. Craft (15) and Evan Ravenel (13) each stepped up to join Thomas in double figures as the team shot 56.4 percent. The Buckeyes took two of three from the Wolverines last season, including 77-55 victory in the Big Ten tournament.

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings in Ohio St.
              * Wolverines are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Ohio St.

              * Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.
              * Underdog is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.

              TIP-INS:

              1. The Buckeyes are 146-13 at home since coach Thad Matta took over before the 2004-05 season.

              2. Michigan shoots 41.1 percent from 3-point range, led by Stauskas’ 52.3 percent.

              3. Burke and Thomas were both named to the midseason John R. Wooden Award top 25 on Thursday.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Jan. 6-12.

                              Hottest ATS team

New Orleans Hornets (3-0, SU, 3-0 ATS)

Despite their horrible SU record (11-25), the Hornets have been a decent bet this season (19-17 ATS). New Orleans has covered in four straight contests, including all three this past week against San Antonio, Houston and Minnesota. The Hornets hit the road for three games this week with stops in New York, Philadelphia and Boston, but that doesn’t mean bettors should fade them. New Orleans boasts an impressive 11-6 ATS mark away from home this season.

                              Coldest ATS team

Sacramento Kings (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

Tyreke Evans and Marcus Thornton returned from injuries this past week, but it hasn’t been enough to change Sacramento’s fortunes. The Kings are dealing with all kinds of off-court distractions like the potential sale and relocation of the team and that has translated into a string of poor performances on the court. Sacramento will have a chance to rebound against lowly Cleveland and Washington early this week.

                              Best over team

                              Orlando Magic (1-2 SU, 3-0 over/under)

The Magic have been the hottest over bet in the Association for the past three weeks. Orlando is riding a 10-game over streak into Monday’s contest in Washington. The Magic then enjoy a three-game homestand where they’ll welcome Indiana, Charlotte and Dallas. Orlando is 11-6-2 O/U at home.

                              Best under team

                              Indiana Pacers (3-0 SU, 0-3 over/under)

Indiana has been a fixture on Bank Shots week in and week out in this category for a reason. The Pacers lead the league in points allowed per game (89.1), opponent field goal percentage (41.3%) and opponent 3-point percentage (31.3%). Indiana is riding a seven-game under streak into Sunday’s tilt with Brooklyn and boasts the best under mark in the league at 13-23-1 O/U.

                              Scouting the schedule

                              - The Philadelphia 76ers enjoy 11 of their next 12 games at the friendly confines of the Wells Fargo Center. Bettors note: The Sixers boast an impressive 14-4 over/under mark at home this season.

                              - The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the midst of a five-game west coast road swing. The Cavs are surprisingly 13-9 ATS on the road, compared to a 4-12 mark at home.

                              - The Utah Jazz wrapped up a three-game road trip with a win and cover at Detroit Saturday and now enter a stretch where they’ll play seven of their next eight at home. The Jazz are 10-5 ATS at EnergySolutions Arena.
