    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl.......

-- Denver 5-2-- Two home wins away from the Super Bowl......

-- Patriots 11-4-- Pass defense will be tested by Texans/Broncos.

-- 49ers 5-1-- +9 in turnovers this year, after being +28 last year.

-- Packers 6-1-- Going to Candlestick their penaly for blowing #2 seed.

-- Falcons 7-1-- Smith has no playoff wins, which explains lack of respect.

-- Seahawks 12-1-- Pass rusher Clemons has torn ACL; big blow.

-- Texans 20-1-- Got crushed in Foxboro last month; another chance here.

-- Ravens 25-1-- Trailed 31-3 in Week 15 home loss to Broncos.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

    13) Over its last three bowl games, Alabama outscored its opponents by a combined score of 112-21; thats Michigan State-LSU-Notre Dame. Wow.

    12) Nick Saban is a great college coach, but you just wish he'd enjoy it a little more; maybe thats just what it takes to maintain greatness the way they have. You wonder if the monster they've created is becoming so big that the expectations will become so great that he'll wind up leaving Tuscaloosa.

I wouldn't want to be the guy who replaces Saban at Alabama.

    11) Packers were giving Minnesota 7.5 points Saturday, until word got out during afternoon that Joe Webb would be starting in place of Christian Ponder, who isn’t exactly Dan Fouts throwing a football.

Nevertheless, since Webb hadn’t thrown a pass all year, line jumped from -7.5 to -11. Webb is first QB to start an NFL playoff game without throwing a pass during the regular season. Tough spot for him, and it showed.

    10) Chip Kelly turned down $6M a year to coach 16 games in the NFL, for his $3.5M gig to coach 12-13 games at Oregon. Must be nice.

    9) Northwestern has never played in NCAA tournament and they won’t this year either; they’re rebounding only 47% of their opponents’ missed shots in league play. That’s really poor; they’re going to get eaten alive in a physical league like the Big Dozen.

    8) Whomever Cleveland Browns hire as head coach will be their 7th coach in 13 years. This change is because of the new owner, I understand that, but at some point, they need continuity, or else they’ll never win.

    7) Someone refresh my memory; why did the Bills get rid of Marshawn Lynch? Seriously, I can’t remember—was it because they drafted CJ Spiller? Lynch is carrying this Seattle offense.

    6) Redskins have to be holding their breath about Robert Griffin III's knee, which may have a torn ACL; if he does have a ACL tear, chances are he will miss the start of next season.

    5) Carmelo Anthony was 6-26 from floor in Knicks' 102-96 home loss to the Rondo-less Celtics. Anthony was 4-12 outside arc, 2-14 inside the arc.

    4) Wizards beat the Thunder and New Orleans upset the Spurs Monday night; is it a full moon outside or what?

    3) Bad news for Patriot League champ Lehigh; CJ McCollum, their star player who was leading country in scoring, broke his foot over the weekend and is out for the rest of the regular season, at least.

    2) Tulsa (coached by Danny Manning) won its Conference USA opener 48-47 at SMU Sunday night on a jump shot by Pat Swilling Jr, whose dad Pat Sr was a fine NFL linebacker from 1986-98, mostly with the Saints.

    1) Out of 347 Division I college basketball teams, there are four unbeaten teams left (Arizona-Duke-Michigan-Wyoming) and two winless teams (Maryland-Eastern Shore and Grambling).

NHL's best and worst bets of the 2011-12 season

With the NHL lockout finally coming to an end, it’s time to start thinking about how to handicap the upcoming season.

Here’s a look back at the best and worst bets on ice last season:

      Best ATS

      Carolina Hurricanes (51-31 ATS)

The Hurricanes only posted a 33-33-16 SU record and missed the playoffs, but they were one hell of a bet in 2011-12.

      Phoenix Coyotes (50-32 ATS)

The Coyotes were the Pacific champs last season, making the transition from long-standing underdog to favorite on most nights.

      Winnipeg Jets (48-34 ATS)

It seemed like the Jets were underdogs in almost every game last season, and it looks like that could be the case again this year.

      Worst ATS

      San Jose Sharks (28-54 ATS)

The Sharks had a respectable 43-29-10 record SU last season, but were still the worst bet in the league.

      Philadelphia Flyers (29-53 ATS)

Much like the Sharks, the Flyers had success SU but failed miserably ATS.

      Buffalo Sabres (33-49 ATS)

Buffalo found itself on the outside looking in come playoff time even with Ryan Miller in goal. Hopefully you faded them last season.

      Best over plays

      Tampa Bay Lightning (52-29-1 O/U)

Steven Stamkos netted 60 goals and four others had 20 or more. Enough said.

      Boston Bruins (46-33-3 O/U)

The Bruins had a balanced attack led by Tyler Seguin and five others who scored 20 times or more.

      Toronto Maple Leafs (45-37-0 O/U)

This team is a mess. Horrible goaltending is to blame for Toronto’s impressive over numbers.

      Best under plays

      Anaheim Ducks (31-47-4 O/U)

Anaheim was a one-trick pony last season and opposing clubs eventually found out how to shut down its top line of Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan. Oh, and they also have a pretty goalie in Jonas Hiller.

      Detroit Red Wings (34-44-4 O/U)

The Red Wings exemplified great team defense and injuries limited their offensive production throughout the season.

      St. Louis Blues (21-43-18 O/U)

The Blues were incredibly hard to score against thanks to the formidable duo of Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak in net.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NCAAB game of the day: Pitt at Georgetown
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Pittsburgh at Georgetown (-2)

Both Georgetown and Pittsburgh will be seeking their first Big East victory this season when the longtime foes meet Tuesday at the Verizon Center. It will be the Big East home opener for the Hoyas, who fell 49-48 at Marquette on Saturday. Greg Whittington missed the third of three free throws with 2.3 seconds left as Georgetown fell in its first road game of the season. It was the sixth time in the last eight games that the Hoyas had held an opponent to 50 points or less, but they got zero points from their bench and made only seven free throws in another rough offensive showing. Georgetown averages just 65.1 points, better than only one team (South Florida) in the 15-team Big East. The Panthers enter as one of just two 0-2 teams in the league after falling to Rutgers on Saturday.

                TV:
                9 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (12-3, 0-2 Big East):
After eight straight wins vaulted the Panthers into the national rankings, they dropped their league opener at home to Cincinnati before losing at the Scarlet Knights, 67-62. Pitt trailed by 14 points just minutes into the contest and could not complete a second-half rally in continuing a troubling trend for head coach James Dixon's crew, which dropped its first seven Big East games last season and could wind up 0-3 this time around if it gives the same effort against Georgetown. J.J. Moore scored 14 points off the bench to pace the Panthers against Rutgers. Tray Woodall added 11 points and eight assists.

                ABOUT GEORGETOWN (10-2, 0-1):
Markel Starks had 18 points and a season-high seven assists in the losing effort Saturday in Milwaukee. Otto Porter Jr. and Whittington had 13 points apiece for the Hoyas, who showed some rust while playing their first game since Dec. 22. Georgetown had just one basket in the final seven-plus minutes. The Hoyas used only seven players and the two that came off the bench -- Jabril Trawick and freshman D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera -- combined to go 0-for-4 from the floor, 0-for-3 from 3-point range and commit three of the team's 10 turnovers. Starks has made 8 of 14 3-pointers (57.1 percent) over his last four games.

                TRENDS:

                * Panthers are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.
                * Hoyas are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
                * Hoyas are 0-5 ATS in their last five games following an ATS win.
                * Panthers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games vs. a team with a winning record.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Pitt leading scorer Talib Zanna was limited to nine points and a season-low one rebound against Rutgers before fouling out on a flagrant foul in the closing minutes.

                2. Hoyas junior F Nate Lubick had zero points and four fouls in 32 minutes against Marquette.

                3. Georgetown has a 41-35 series advantage but the Panthers are 17-9 in the last 26 meetings.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Study group: Tuesday's NCAAB betting notes
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Alabama at (12) Missouri (-10.5)

Missouri coach Frank Haith doesn’t think junior forward Tony Criswell - a valued energy guy off the bench - will be ready for Tuesday. Criswell has missed Missouri's last two games with a broken finger on his left (non-shooting) hand. Keep in mind the Tigers are nasty on the boards, averaging a nation-best 46.7 per game. Alabama is 1-4 ATS in its last five overall and 0-4 ATS in its last four contests vs. a team with a winning record.

                    Clemson at (1) Duke (-18)

While the sharpshooting of Ryan Kelly (13.5 points per game) and Seth Curry (16.6) from the perimeter is deadly, the Blue Devils like to work the interior through Mason Plumlee (18.4 points, 11.3 rebounds) and play well defensively. Clemson also relies heavily on its 14th-ranked defense (56.2) points per game and is 4-1 ATS in its last five games after a loss.

                    Drake at (11) Creighton (-21)

Creighton is enjoying its best start in Missouri Valley Conference play since the 2003-04 season. The Blue Jays will look to continue that momentum by winning their ninth contest overall when they welcome Drake. Reigning MVC Player of the Year Doug McDermott showed why he is one of the top scorers in the nation by collecting 25 points and nine rebounds as Creighton recorded a 79-66 victory over Indiana State on Saturday. Drake suffered its third straight loss with a 77-65 setback to Missouri State on Saturday. The Bulldogs are 0-5 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss.

                    (14) Ohio St. at Purdue (+6.5)

The Buckeyes were clobbered 74-55 at Illinois on Saturday, shooting just 33 percent from the field (including 21 percent from 3-point range), turning the ball over 16 times (six more than their average) and getting outrebounded 39-28. Purdue also suffered a setback Saturday, falling 84-61 to Michigan State after beating Illinois in its Big Ten opener on Wednesday. Ohio State is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games following a loss and the Boilermakers are 1-6 ATS in their last seven overall.

                    Pittsburgh at (22) Georgetown (-2)

Georgetown averages just 65.1 points, better than only one team (South Florida) in the 15-team Big East, but boasts a defense that has held six of its last eight opponents to 50 or fewer points. The Panthers enter as one of just two 0-2 teams in the league after falling to Rutgers on Saturday. Pitt leading scorer Talib Zanna was limited to nine points and a season-low one rebound in the loss before fouling out on a flagrant in the closing minutes. The Hoyas are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.
