    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

In my opinion, the six best coaches in the NFL.......

    6) Mike McCarthy, Packers-- Wins consistently in league's smallest market; maybe being in a small market is an advantage.

    5) John Fox, Broncos-- Got to Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme at QB, went 8-8 with Tim Tebow, now has Peyton Manning. Lucky him.

    4) Mike Shanahan, Redskins-- This was his best non-Elway season; would his son/OC leave his dad for a head coaching job?

    3) Sean Payton, Saints-- Got suspended for a year, then got a huge raise.

    2) Bill Belichick, Patriots-- Won three Super Bowls, all by a FG; since he was found to be a cheater, zero titles, losing two Super Bowls to........

    1) Tom Coughlin, Giants-- Won two Super Bowls with Giants, but his best work was done with the expansion Jaguars in late 90's.

    *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

    13) College basketball ref John Cahill is one of the best in country and happens to be from Albany; he once ran for Albany County DA. Now he is on TV several times a week reffing ballgames all over the eastern half of the country. Here is a sample of a nine-day stretch of his schedule last month:

    Dec 15-- Louisville 87 @ Memphis 78
    Dec 18-- Presbyterian 62 @ Tennessee 78
    Dec 19-- Xavier 45 vs Cincinnati 60
    Dec 20-- Robert Morris 74 @ Arkansas 79
    Dec 22-- LSU 70 @ Marquette 84
    Dec 23-- South Carolina State 41 @ Clemson 77

You get assigned to Xavier-Cincinnati and Louisville-Memphis, thats about as big a compliment as an official can get.

    12) Referee James Breeding has already worked 34 games in 21 different states this season. That a lot of different states.

    11) Redskins had total of 74 yards in their last eight drives; biggest issue facing Robert Griffin III as he moves forward in his career will be his ability to stay healthy. Otherwise, Redskins are set at QB for next 10-12 years.

    10) What a year the Colts had; their HC is found to have leukemia, but they overcome that and make the playoffs, but then interim coach/OC misses their playoff game after getting taken to the hospital the morning of the game, supposedly with an inner ear infection. Amazing season for them.

    9) You don't think the layoff before a bowl game is excessive?

Colts-Vikings-Bengals have all played seven games since the last time Notre Dame played a game.

    8) PGA Tournament in Kapaula was supposed to start Thursday; they actually played a little Friday/Sunday, but winds have been so strong, they stopped play both days. They'll try to play 36 holes Monday and 18 more Tuesday. Next week's tournament is Hawai'ian Open, so golfers don't have too far to go for the next event.

    7) Buffalo Bills hired Syracuse coach Doug Marrone as its new coach; no idea if he'll do well or not (he did well rebuilding at Syracuse), but no way is his hiring going to sell a lot of tickets in western New York.

I know the goal is to win games and that ultimately sells the most tickets, but you look at the Bills and wonder if they know what the hell they're doing.

    6) Speaking of which, Eagles were anxious to dump Andy Reid, but have yet to replace him. If they don't land Chip Kelly, where they going to look?

And if they do sign Kelly, then who is their QB going forward?

    5) If I had to pick a college basketball Final Four right now, I'd probably go with Michigan-Louisville-Duke-Minnesota. Luckily for me, there are lot of games left between now and Selection Sunday (10 weeks).

    4) You see a Virginia player dribble from the wing to basket for a layup in last 6:00 of a close game, and you realize that this Tar Heel team is going to be fortunate if they win a game in NCAA tournament. There is no presence in the middle of the North Carolina defense to discourage opponents.

    3) GoDaddy.com Bowl might be a minor bowl, but being one of few good TV viewing options on a Sunday night in January has to be big advantage for Kent State/Arkansas State during heart of recruiting season.

    2) If you took the eight starting QBs in the NFL this weekend and had a draft, wouldn't Joe Flacco be the 7th guy taken??

    1) NHL and Players' Union finally came to an agreement; supposedly, the season will start January 19. Thats kind of fast; hope they're not rushing the start of the season, at the expense of getting the players in shape.

They're saying a 48-game regular season, then full set of playoffs. Curious to see what DirecTV charges for the Center Ice package.

Falcons open as slight faves over Seahawks

The Atlanta Falcons have opened as 2.5-point favorites with the total set at 45.5 when they host the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round of the playoffs next Sunday afternoon.

Mike Perry, oddsmaker for Sportsbook.ag, opened the floodgates just after Seattle’s 24-14 win over Washington.

The Seahawks have now covered in three straight road games, while the Falcons went 4-4 ATS in eight home games this season. Atlanta also played under the total in seven of its eight home affairs.

Broncos open as big faves over Ravens

The Denver Broncos have opened as 9.5-point favorites in next week's divisional playoff matchup when they host the Baltimore Ravens with the total set at 45.

Mike Perry, oddsmaker for Sportsbook.ag, saw immediate sharp action at Broncos -9.5 and moved the line to Denver -9.

The Ravens extended the career of LB Ray Lewis with a 24-9 win over the Colts, covering the 7-point spread Sunday afternoon. The Broncos pulled off a 34-17 victory in Baltimore back on Dec. 16, easily covering the 3-point spread.

The Broncos and Ravens will do battle Saturday afternoon at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Denver has covered its last two contests at home, where it has a 5-3 ATS record this season.

NCAAB game of the day: Notre Dame at Cincinnati
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notre Dame at Cincinnati (-4, 134.5)

Through no fault of its own, No. 19 Notre Dame and its 11-game winning streak figure to take a back seat on Monday when the Fighting Irish travel to No. 15 Cincinnati. The Notre Dame football team, which will meet Alabama on the gridiron in the BCS title game two hours, may remove some of the luster off the basketball team that is one win shy of matching its longest winning streak under coach Mike Brey. The Irish – like their football brethren hopes to do – returned from a long layoff and did not miss a beat in Saturday’s 93-74 victory over Seton Hall. The Bearcats, who haven’t dropped three straight at home since a five-game slide in 2007, are looking to rebound from two one-point setbacks at Fifth Third Arena over their last three games after Saturday’s 53-52 loss to St. John’s.

        TV: 6:30 p.m. ET; ESPN2.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (13-1, 1-0 Big East): The Irish are averaging 79.5 points and shooting 53.5 percent from the field during their 11-game winning streak. Even as Jack Cooley was posting his 10th double-double and Eric Atkins his fifth against the Pirates, Notre Dame may have been the most pleased with the contributions of sixth-year senior Scott Martin, who drained a career-high six 3-pointers en route to a season-high 22 points Saturday. The Irish will be playing their first true road game of the season; eight of the team’s nine Big East regular-season losses over the past two campaigns have come on the road.

ABOUT CINCINNATI (13-2, 1-1): The Bearcats entered Saturday as the second-best rebounding team in the country, but lost the battle of the boards for just the third time this season. Cincinnati, which owns the nation’s ninth-best field goal percentage defense (35.7), will present a formidable challenge to the efficient Irish offense that ranks third in the country in shooting percentage (51.5). Sean Kilpatrick – the team’s leading scorer – has been limited to 22 points in the Bearcats’ losses against New Mexico and St. John’s, shooting just 22.2 percent in those games. In the team’s 13 wins, he is averaging 18.9 points and shooting 46.7 percent.

        TRENDS:

        * Fighting Irish are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
        * Bearcats are 4-0 ATS in their last four games following a loss.
        * Over is 4-0 in Notre Dame’s last four overall.
        * Under is 6-1 in Bearcats’ last seven overall.

        TIP-INS:

        1. Notre Dame’s most recent 12-game winning streak occurred during the 2006-07 season.

        2. Cincinnati has won nine of its last 12 games against ranked opponents.

        3. Cashmere Wright needs one assist to move Bearcat legend Oscar Robertson (425) for sole possession of fourth place in school history.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5.

              Hottest ATS team

Houston Rockets (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Rockets are absolutely on fire ATS, covering in 10 of their last 11 games. Houston swept the board this past week, covering the number against Atlanta, New Orleans, Milwaukee and Cleveland. Houston welcomes the Lakers on Tuesday before heading out on a three-game road trip that includes stops in New Orleans, Boston and Philadelphia.

              Coldest ATS team

Miami Heat (2-1 SU, 0-3 ATS)

The Heat have failed to cover in five straight contests, including three last week as favorites against the Magic, Mavericks and Bulls. Miami always has high expectations placed on it by oddsmakers and continues to be one of the more mediocre bets in the Association (15-16 ATS). The Heat host the Wizards Sunday before heading out on a six-game road trip.

              Best over team

              Orlando Magic (0-3 SU, 3-0 over/under)

The Magic have played over the total in seven consecutive games and are losers of eight straight heading into action Monday at Portland. The Magic haven't dropped that many games in a row since Feb. 6-22, 2006, under coach Brian Hill. Orlando is still dealing with injuries to key cogs E’Twaun Moore (elbow) and Glen Davis (shoulder) and now embarks on a four-game west coast road trip.

              Best under team

              Indiana Pacers (3-1 SU, 0-4 over/under)

The Pacers have been one of the best under plays (13-20 O/U) all season long and this week was no different. Indiana has played under the number in four consecutive games, thanks to its tenacious defense. The Pacers allow 89.8 points per game – the second-best mark in the league – and are holding opponents to an NBA-best 41.4 percent shooting from the floor. Indiana continues its five-game homestand with games against Miami, New York and Charlotte this week.

              Scouting the schedule:

-The Philadelphia 76ers wrapped up a daunting eight-game road trip (3-5 ATS) in San Antonio on Saturday. The Sixers now play 13 of their next 15 contests at the friendly confines of the Wells Fargo Center beginning with a visit from the Nets on Tuesday.

-The Timberwolves have lost star forward Kevin Love (hand) indefinitely and are also dealing with an injury to guard Ricky Rubio (back). Minnesota hosts Atlanta on Tuesday and then heads out on a four-game road trip with stops in Oklahoma City, New Orleans, San Antonio and Dallas.

NBA game of the day: Celtics at Knicks
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at New York Knicks (-6, 193)

The New York Knicks have been resting comfortably atop the Atlantic Division for much of the season. The Boston Celtics know that spot all too well, considering they've won the division title in each of the last five years. New York hasn't owned the Atlantic since 1993-94, but Carmelo Anthony will look to continue his scoring surge on Monday when the rivals meet for the first time this season at Madison Square Garden.

Anthony fueled a fourth-quarter comeback by scoring 16 of his 40 points in the session as New York posted a 114-106 victory over Orlando on Saturday. The Knicks have won two in a row - as have the Celtics, who benefited from Rajon Rondo's second triple-double this season to secure an 89-81 victory over Atlanta on Saturday. Rondo had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (16-17): The road hasn't been kind for coach Doc Rivers' club, which had dropped three in a row prior to defeating Atlanta. The Celtics will make the short trek to the Big Apple before returning to Beantown, where it will remain for five straight games. Forward Paul Pierce, who averages 23.6 points in his career versus New York, erupted for a season-high 43 in a 118-110 loss to New York on April 17.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (23-10): Anthony registered his second career triple-double in last April's contest - going for 35 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. The superstar insists that his team isn't concerned with Boston, which sits seven games back in the standings. "We don't even think about them," he said. "No disrespect or anything. We're focused on ourselves." The Knicks seemed to be pretty locked in on that regard, as they toughened up defensively to stymie San Antonio on Thursday before overcoming an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to the Magic on Saturday.
