    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Rumors have Eagles making a strong pitch for Oregon coach Chip Kelly to replace Andy Reid next season. Reid will be missed.

-- Michael Vick is likely to start for the Eagles this week; Nick Foles broke his hand, won't play Sunday. Trent Edwards is Philly's #3 QB.

-- Rams are much improved at 7-7-1; they're 0-7-1 when they lose turnover battle, 6-0 when they're plus in turnovers, 1-0 when it was even.

-- Redskins opened as a 5-point favorite over Dallas; got bet down to 3.

-- Steelers are 7-8, 4-5 in games decided by 4 or less points. Awful lot of close games.

-- Four of the NBA's six oldest players were in the Laker-Knick game.

    ******

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) Houston Texans had 59 plays of 20+ yards in their first 14 games, an average of 4.2 per game; they had none against the Vikings Sunday; they have to be at least a little nervous heading into Indianapolis Sunday.

    12) Rumor mill has Steve Mariucci interested in coaching the Chargers; he was 60-43 coaching the 49ers, 15-28 with the Lions, and now works for the NFL Network. Curious to see what direction San Diego goes in.

    11) Most underrated NBA coach; Minnesota's Rick Adelman, whose career record is 984-668, all in smaller markets. He had eight consecutive winning years with Sacramento, which hasn't had one since, and hadn't one before since 1983. Also got Portland to the NBA Finals twice.

    10) Adelman has a 79-78 career playoff record, and in 20 seasons as head coach, has only three losing ones, yet he gets no acclaim at all.

    9) Jason Garreett is Cowboys' 7th head coach since Jerry Jones sent Tom Landry packing; they beat Philly 34-14 in '09 playoffs, Dallas' only playoff win since beating the Vikings 40-15 in '96. Garrett is doing a solid job and will be retained, if owner/GM Jones knows what he's doing-- I'm guessing Jones might be tempted to take a run at potential free agent Sean Payton.

    8) If you care about such things, NFC teams finished up 38-26 against AFC teams this year; all 16 games this week are divisional games. If you are interested in totals, over is 119-118-3 this season.

    7) This is how sensitive NBA players are to any form of criticism; Jeff Van Gundy used term "non-strengths" to describe Carmelo Anthony's, um, weaknesses, as if acknowledging that he has weaknesses would be seen as a form of criticism. Yikes.

    6) Nets have the second-highest payroll in the NBA? Ouch!!!!

    5) Why is Amare Stoudamire untradeable? He has three years and $65M left on his contract, and a bad knee. He's the NBA version of ARod.

    4) Read on Twitter that after South Dakota State lost at Belmont last week, they actually took a bus from Nashville to Albuquerque, which according to Mapquest, is a mere 1,221 miles. Jackrabbits then upset New Mexico, which could provide bus companies with more business in coming years.

    3) Uniforms the NBA teams wore in Tuesday's games will probably sell a lot online, but to the TV viewer, it would be nice if you could read what the numbers actually were. Orange numbers, orange jerseys are atrocious on TV.

    2) Indiana State pulled a mild upset in 3rd-place game of Diamond Head tourney out in Hawai'i, beating Miami 57-55 in OT; doesn't sound like a lot, but it is the kind of game that could pop up on Selection Sunday. .

    1) Championship game at Diamond Head went to Arizona, which nipped San Diego State 68-67 in a terrific game. Seemed like a March game.

NFL playoff scenarios: Week 17 hits and misses

Every spot in the AFC has been decided, while the NFC East and the conference’s last two berths are still up for grabs heading into the final weekend.

Here’s a look at Sunday’s games with playoff implications and the contests that don’t mean a darn thing.

      Games with playoff implications:

      Houston at Indianapolis

The Texans have clinched the AFC South and can earn home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win in Week 17.

      Philadelphia at N.Y. Giants

This game is a must-win for the Giants, who also need help to earn a playoff berth.

      Chicago at Detroit

The Bears need to take business in Detroit and hope Green Bay knocks off Minnesota in order to play January football.

      Kansas City at Denver

Denver can earn a first-round bye with a win over the lowly Chiefs.

      Arizona at San Francisco

The Niners can clinch the NFC West with a win.

      St. Louis at Seattle

The Seahawks can clinch the NFC West with a win, combined with a San Francisco loss.

      Green Bay at Minnesota

This is a must-win for both teams. Green Bay can clinch the No. 2 seed in the NFC and Minnesota needs a win to clinch a playoff berth.

      Miami at New England

The Patriots hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with Denver and can earn the No. 2 seed in the AFC with a win over the Fish paired with a Broncos loss.

      Dallas at Washington

The Redskins can clinch the NFC East with a win over the Cowboys, who also need a win to clinch the division. Dallas has been eliminated from wild-card contention.

      Baltimore at Cincinnati

The Ravens were assured of a home playoff game after Sunday’s 33-14 triumph over the Giants and the Bengals punched their ticket to the postseason with a 13-10 victory over the Steelers.

      Meaningless Games:

      Cleveland at Pittsburgh

      Jacksonville at Tennessee

      N.Y Jets at Buffalo

      Tampa Bay at Atlanta

      Carolina at New Orleans

      Oakland at San Diego

Pucking the trends: AHL betting news and notes

No NHL. No problem. Check out the latest betting news and notes from the young guns in the AHL.

        Hot Team: Toronto Marlies

The Marlies are 8-1-1-0 in their last 10 games and are tied for the North Division lead thanks to their potent offense, which hasn’t slowed in the absence of Jake Gardiner. Toronto is tied for second in the league with 96 goals scored.

Gardiner has missed the last six games with concussion-like symptoms. In that span, the Marlies have scored 22 goals. Ryan Hamilton, who leads the team with 12 goals, has four goals and seven points in his last four games. Keith Aucoin leads the team with 24 assists and 30 points and has eight in his last four games.

With Nazem Kadri and Mike Zigomanis expected to return from injury soon, there’s every reason to expect Toronto’s scoring to stay hot into the new year.

        Cold Team: Abbotsford Heat

The Heat have only won one of their last five games in Abbotsford, where they were unbeatable to start the season. To make matters worse, they’ve won only one of their last six road games, where they’ve struggled all season.

Abbotsford is tied with Toronto for the North Division lead but that will change in a hurry if it can’t find a way to score on the road. Losing top prospect Sven Baertschi to a concussion at the end of November has stifled the Heat’s offense, which managed just five goals in its last four road games.

Roman Horak leads the team with 13 goals but has two in 10 games this month. Without weapons like Baertschi, Abbotsford lacks the scoring depth necessary to be a top team in the AHL.

        Surveying the schedule:

        - The Providence Bruins have a busy week on the road with games at Portland on Thursday, at Adirondack on Friday and at Worcester on Saturday. Providence is 8-4-0-0 on the road this season.

        - The St. John’s IceCaps end 2012 with games at Hamilton on Friday, at Syracuse on Saturday and at Binghamton next Monday. St. John’s is at the bottom of the Atlantic Division and is 3-7-0-0 in its last 10.

NBA game of the day: Lakers at Nuggets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (7, 204.5)

The Los Angeles Lakers have achieved the first of their many goals for the remainder of the season. Next up is a victory over the host Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Los Angeles made a triumphant return to the .500 mark on Christmas Day, getting 34 points from Kobe Bryant and 11 assists from Steve Nash in a come-from-behind win over the New York Knicks. The Lakers have won five straight but will be in tough to extend that run against a Nuggets team sporting an 8-1 home record.

Denver is in the midst of four games in five days, and it kicked off the grueling stretch with a 112-100 loss to the red-hot Los Angeles Clippers. The Nuggets were done in by a 42-point second quarter as they fell for just the second time in the last six games. Considered one of the early-season contenders for a top-four seed in the Western Conference, Denver has lacked the consistency of front-runners Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Memphis and are struggling on the defensive end.

                TV:
9 p.m. ET, Time Warner SportsNet (Los Angeles), Altitude (Denver)

                ABOUT THE LAKERS (14-14):
Much has been made about the struggles of the Lakers' offense despite the addition of two star free agents in Nash and Dwight Howard and a new head coach in Mike D'Antoni. Yet, while it remains to be seen how the Lakers' loaded lineup will jell on the offensive end, it has shown flashes of stardom on defense. Los Angeles limited the Carmelo Anthony-led Knicks to just 14 fourth-quarter points, allowing Bryant and Nash to pull out the victory. With three defensive stalwarts on the roster in Bryant, Howard and Metta World Peace, Los Angeles is a tough team for most opposing scorers to face.

                ABOUT THE NUGGETS (15-14):
Teams have figured out that one of the best ways to handle the Denver defense is to fire away from beyond the arc. The Nuggets are fifth-worst in the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage against, and the Clippers exploited that weakness by connecting on 11 of 25 attempts in their Christmas Day victory. Denver continues to roll along offensively despite Danilo Gallinari's recent struggles. The Italian forward is mired in a horrible slump, having made just six of his last 31 shot attempts - highlighted by a 1-for-10 clunker against the Clippers, his second such effort in three games.

                TRENDS:

                * Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a win.
                * Nuggets are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games.
                * Over is 7-1 in Lakers’ last eight vs. NBA Northwest foes.
                * Over is 4-0 in Nuggets’ last four vs. NBA Pacific opposition.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. The Lakers have dominated the head-to-head series of late, eliminating Denver from the 2012 playoffs and cruising to a 122-103 victory in their first meeting this season.

                2. Denver is 3-12 when allowing 100 or more points.

                3. Bryant averages 24.8 points in 55 career regular-season games against the Nuggets.
