Well, here they are. The worst days of the year for sports fans are today and tomorrow. There's one college football game today and not much more tomorrow. Have a great couple of days off, guys!

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 700+ contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

      6) Cleveland Browns, 179- L
      5) New Orleans Saints, 181- W
      4) Washington Redskins, 197- L
      3) New Jersey Giants, 207- L
      T1) Seattle Seahawks, 232- W
      T1) Cincinnati Bengals, 232- W

      T26) Miami/Titans, 57- W-L
      28) Oakland Raiders, 54- L
      29) Denver Broncos, 53- W
      30) Houston Texans, 52- L
      31) New Jersey Jets, 43- L
      32) Arizona Cardinals, 40- L

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.......

      13) Bengals didn't have an offensive TD, turned ball over three times, gave up six sacks, but won 13-10 in Pittsburgh, clinching their second consecutive playoff spot, first time in 30 years they've done that. Marvin Lewis has done an underrated job, working for the cheapest owner in the NFL.

      12) This time LY, Giants were 8-7, just like they are now; problem is, over the last two weeks, Giants have been outgained 927-313, outscored 67-14 and appear likely to miss the playoffs. They gave up 224 rushing yards in Baltimore Sunday, in a game they were never really in.

      11) Saints were 11-19 on third down, Dallas 2-10 in New Orleans' exciting 34-31 win at Jerry World. Both teams had 400+ passing yards.

      10) Houston Texans laid an egg at home, losing 23-6 to Minnesota, failing to wrap up home field thru the AFC playoffs; now they have to beat the Colts in Indy next week, in what should be an emotional game with Chuck Pagano expected to return from a bout with leukemia to coach the Colts.

      9) Seahawks kept NFC West race alive by spanking the 49ers in the rainy Northwest. Both teams will be heavy favorites next week; Packers are now the #2 seed in the NFC if they beat Minnesota next week.

      8) In baseball, Indians gave Nick Swisher $56M for four years, as lot of teams are scrambling to fill their lineups out by overpaying for players who have already seen their best days. Mariners also signed Raul Ibanez- he was a terrific clutch hitter last fall in the Bronx.

      7) Rams were 2-14 LY, 15-65 from 2007-11; they're 7-7-1 this year under Jeff Fisher after whacking the Bucs 28-13 in Tampa. With four picks in the first round of the next two drafts, they could become a contender soon.

      6) Northern Iowa bounced back from its loss at UNLV by going home and upsetting St Mary's, 82-75. Good win for the Panthers and the MVC.

      5) Chicago Bears scored two defensive TDs, easily beat Cardinals 28-13 in Phoenix, which used its fourth different QB when Brian Hoyer relieved Ryan Lindley after the issue had already been decided.

      4) Chargers had 11 sacks in their 27-17 win at Swamp Stadium, over the dysfunctional Jets. San Diego had 27 sacks in its first 14 games.

      3) Clippers have now won 13 games in a row after clubbing the Suns in Phoenix. Suns are 0-6 vs spread if they played night before.

      2) Kansas City ran the ball for 352 yards but lost; not sure I've ever seen that before in the NFL; their only two TDs in last three games were pair of 80+ runs by Jamaal Charles, both on the first play of a half.

      1) 16 games next Sunday, last day of regular season, all divisional games. Should be lot of fun; important thing is to get into the tournament; last two Super Bowl champs were the #6 seed in the NFC that year.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

Stats as of Sunday, Dec. 23.

        Hottest ATS team

Miami Heat (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS last week)

The Heat are hitting their stride with a huge Christmas Day matchup looming. Miami rolled over Minnesota, Dallas and Utah last week, winning those games by an average margin of 14 points – music to the bettor’s ears. Those blowouts are just what you need when dealing with the Heat’s inflated lines on a nightly basis. Miami is getting the job done with defense, holding all three of those opponents and its last seven under the 100-point plateau.

        Coldest ATS team

San Antonio Spurs (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS last week)

Suddenly the NBA’s golden goose is losing its glitter. The Spurs have been cash cows for most of 2012 but hit an ATS skid this week, failing to cover at Oklahoma City, at Denver and home to New Orleans. However, things will likely turn around this coming week. Kawhi Leonard and Stephen Jackson are both back from injuries, providing the aging starters with some relief off the bench. San Antonio hosts Dallas Sunday before a short break and a home game with Toronto on Dec. 26.

        Best over team

        Boston Celtics (1-2 SU, 3-0 over/under)

The Celtics’ late-game defense has allowed scores to creep into over range. Boston let up versus Milwaukee Friday and watched an 8-point fourth-quarter lead transform into an overtime loss. The Celtics have actually been one of the better over plays at home this season, posting a 9-4-1 over/under count in the Garden. However, they hit the road for four straight games starting with a Christmas Day trip to Brooklyn. The Nets and Celtics have played under the total in seven of their last nine meetings.

        Best under team

        Los Angeles Clippers (3-0 SU, 0-3 over/under)

The Clippers may get some serious face time during the Plays of the Night, but L.A.’s "other team" has built a solid start to the season on the back of its defense. Los Angeles is locking down foes for just 92.2 points per game and took advantage of some less-than-powerful scoring attacks this past week. In wins over Detroit, New Orleans and Sacramento, the Clippers gave up an average of just over 79 points. Los Angeles takes on Phoenix Sunday and has a Christmas Day date with Denver at home.

        Scouting the schedule

        - Toronto better enjoy its extended holiday break because it’s back to business after Xmas. The Raptors hit the road for three road games in four nights, starting in San Antonio Wednesday. They then go to New Orleans Friday and Orlando Saturday. Toronto has been a solid wager north of the border (8-4 ATS at home) but is just 6-10 ATS away from the Air Canada Centre.

        - Miami doesn’t get much time to put its feet up during the holidays. The Heat play four games in five nights, beginning with a finals rematch against Oklahoma City on Christmas Day. The defending champs hit the road for three straight games after that – at Charlotte Wednesday, at Detroit Friday, and at Milwaukee Saturday. They cap that four-game swing in Orlando on New Year’s Eve.

NBA Christmas Day betting trends and stats
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Past Performances

Here is a breakdown of the 10 teams playing on Christmas this season and how they’ve performed on Dec. 25 since 1990:

          • Boston: 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS
          Trending: underdogs all six games

          • Brooklyn (formerly New Jersey): 1-0 SU and 1-0 ATS
          Trending: 1-0 OVER

          • Chicago: 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS
          Trending: 0-4 UNDER last four

          • Denver: 1-2 SU and 1-2 ATS
Trending: 0-2 ATS off ATS win

          • Houston: 1-3 SU and 3-1 ATS
Trending: 3-0 ATS last three games

          • L.A. Clippers: 1-3 SU and 1-3 ATS
Trending: 0-3 ATS vs. .500 or greater opponent

          • L.A. Lakers: 6-9 SU and 8-6-1 ATS
Trending: 1-6 UNDER last seven games

          • Miami: 6-2 SU and 4-4 ATS
Trending: 1-5 UNDER last six games

          • New York: 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS
Trending: 0-3 ATS vs. sub .550 opponent

          • Oklahoma City: 2-2 SU and 2-2 ATS
          Trending: 1-3 UNDER

          Defending champion doldrums

Christmas day has not been a gifting experience for defending champions.

That’s confirmed by their lousy 1-7 SU and 2-5-1 ATS mark when facing .700 or greater opponents, including 0-6 SU and 0-5-1 ATS the last six games.

Oklahoma City will look to add to that number as it heads to South Beach with revenge on their minds from last year’s loss in the championship finals to Miami.

          Under whelming

Non-conference games certainly bring the best defensive effort out in teams on Christmas Day.

Eleven of the 13 games played on Dec. 25 involving Eastern and Western Conference foes have played under the total.

The five games involving a team off loss have all stayed under the total.

          Stat Of Xmas Day

NBA teams on Christmas Day off a pair of losses are 5-0 ATS versus an opponent off a pair of wins since 1990.

Well, there are 6 division winners going into the tourney so one of them has to be a 6 seed. The wild cards would be 7 and 8, right?

Armadillo's in Las Vegas this week. Maybe his memory is a little fuzzy right now.

                    Nick,

I really don't understand how he's figuring this.

Hell, I can't even remember there are 8 divisions in the NFL now. I'm still living in the days of 6 divisions!

Armadillo must be having too much fun in Nevada!

NFL odds: Week 17 opening line report

It’s the final week of the NFL regular season and many of the Week 17 games have postseason implications. None more so than games involving the NFC East.

Three teams – New York, Dallas and Washington – are still battling for playoff berths and the division crown is on the line Sunday when the Cowboys visit the Redskins.

                      Dallas at Washington (-3.5, 50)

There’s no team hotter than the Redskins, who are on a six-game winning streak straight up and against the spread. Washington prevailed 38-31 over Dallas in Week 12 at Cowboys Stadium and can wrap up the NFC East with a win Sunday night. The Redskins can also clinch a playoff berth if the Bears and Vikings both drop their respective finales. This betting line is a mirror image of the line in Week 12, when the Cowboys were 3.5-point home faves.

Green Bay at Minnesota (3, 46)

There’s no shortage of storylines heading into this clash between NFC North foes. The Vikings were written off after their Week 13 loss at Green Bay, but have rebounded with a three-game SU and ATS win streak to catapult them back into the playoff picture. Green Bay is coming off a 55-7 demolition of the Titans but still has some work to do to secure a first-round bye. The Packers are on a 4-0 SU and ATS run.

Kansas City at Denver (-16, 42)

The Broncos still have plenty to play for in their season finale and oddsmakers are putting them to the test with a daunting 16-point spread – their highest of the season. Denver couldn’t cover the 10 points in the previous Week 12 meeting at Arrowhead and Kansas City will relish the role of spoiler in this one. The Broncos can clinch a first-round bye and even home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win and some help.

                      Houston at Indianapolis (5, 44)

Rookie quarterback Andrew Luck successfully led Indy to the playoffs with a seven-point win over Kansas City on Sunday, but Houston has plenty to play for heading into its finale. The Texans were held to just six points by the Vikings on Sunday and oddsmakers are banking on a rebound performance from the offense this week. Houston can clinch a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win and little luck.
