Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Last 12 bowl teams (Washington) that lost their last regular season game in OT went 3-9 vs spread in their bowl game.

-- Last six times a C-USA team played a Sun Belt team in a bowl, the dog covered five of the six bowls. Sun Belt teams are 24-10 against the spread out of conference in '12.

13) Want to know why Cubs haven't been in a World Series since 1945? They're about to give Edwin Jackson a $52M, four-year contract, the same Edwin Jackson who has pitched for seven teams in 10 years, and he's not even 30 years old yet. His career record? 70-71. Brilliant!!!!

12) AJ Pierzynski signed up to catch for the Rangers, as Nolan Ryan keeps remaking his ballclub. Not sure they're better, but they're different.

11) Auburn signed Rodney Garner away from Georgia, which doesn't sound like much, until you realize that Garner was Georgia's recruiting guru, so thats a big coup for Auburn's new head coach, Gus Malzahn.

10) Spent Thursday night at Bishop Gorman HS here in Las Vegas, watching a high school basketball tournament; some famous schools are here, some real good players. Mater Dei from LA has the sons of former Laker coach Mike Brown and Michael Cage; Fairfax has Reggie Theus Jr., the host team has a pair of sophomores who are 6-10/7-0 tall, and they're pretty good right now. No shot clock in Nevada and mercifully, none needed.

9) It was dark when I got there so I couldn't see much of the school, but I was told that they guys who own UFC (Ultimate Figthing) are huge boosters at Bishop Gorman, since their kids go there, and that the weight room at Gorman is better than the one at Ohio State, which is really remarkable. Lot of fancy cars outside the school, which has a Performing Arts Center next to the gym. .

8) Bishop Gorman's pep band was playing Aerosmith songs; they're very good- one of the advantages of living in Las Vegas is that the arts teachers are likely to be professionals who work in shows on the Strip. .

7) Mater Dei had 24 kids in uniform, so they must've brought their whole JV team; they were up 30 when I got there, so I missed out on seeing their starters play. Seems like most of these teams are better on offense than on defense, but their skill level for high schoolers is very good .

6) They play 16:00 halves in Nevada, not 8:00 quarters; not sure it makes any difference, other than two less stoppages in play during the game.

5) Shabazz Muhammad's brother plays for Gorman; he had a ton of points last night, but he' not the player his brother is. Gorman's coach is Grant Rice, whose brother Dave is UNLV's coach.

4) It is very cool to drive around here on December 20 with Christmas carols on the radio while you can see the lights of the Strip; unfortunately, its not much warmer here than back home, but its a little warmer. They do not sell ice scrapers in convenience stores here.

3) Watched the replay of the Poinsettia Bowl, which turned into a debacle for the hometown Aztecs in the 4th quarter; refs made couple of hideous calls against San Diego State just before halftime, which hurt Aztecs badly-- one of the calls cost San Diego State a TD when they already led 6-0.

2) Who decided that putting Duke on ESPNU two nights in a row vs obscure teams was a good idea? Cornell and Elon? Please.

1) Final nail in Kevin O'Neill's tenure at USC might be their home loss to Cal-Irvine last night; Anteaters were up 12 at half-- not good.

The New York Knicks have received plenty of deserved praise for their hot start while the Chicago Bulls have quietly been lurking around the top of the Central Division, staking their claim as one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference even without Derrick Rose. The Bulls will try to gain some recognition when they visit the Knicks on Friday. Chicago beat New York at home on Dec. 8 and has won six of its last eight games overall.

The Knicks trounced the Brooklyn Nets at home on Wednesday to gain a leg up on the city rivalry while maintaining their spot as the top team in the East. Carmelo Anthony returned from a two-game absence and scored 31 points in the victory. Anthony sat out the 93-85 loss at the Bulls earlier this month due to a finger injury and New York struggled to find any offense while shooting 32.1 percent. Chicago has been taking a lot of teams out of their rhythm lately and ranks second in the league in points allowed (90.3).

ABOUT THE BULLS (14-10, 9-15 ATS): Chicago is still lacking a go-to-scorer with Rose on the shelf but has gotten strong play from the likes of Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer. Noah recorded his first career triple-double in a home win over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday and Boozer and Luol Deng each scored 21 points. The Bulls have gotten sparks on offense from Nate Robinson and Marco Belinelli as well, but still win with their defense. Chicago has allowed only one of its last 14 opponents to reach 100 points, and that was in a 108-104 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 7. Of course, they bounced back from that performance by stifling the Knicks. Deng and Belinelli scored 22 points apiece while Noah and Boozer each recorded double-doubles in that win.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (19-6, 15-10 ATS): With Anthony sidelined, Raymond Felton ended up as the focal point of the offense in Chicago and ended up taking 30 shots (connecting on nine). New York featured a more balanced attack earlier this week without Anthony but was glad to have its MVP candidate back on Wednesday. He went 12-of-22 from the field and did not appear limited in 36 minutes of a 100-86 triumph. The Knicks have gone 5-1 since that loss in Chicago, reaching the century mark in each victory. One benefit of Anthony’s recent absence was to Chris Copeland, who got the bulk of the playing time and proved he belonged. Back to the bench Wednesday, Copeland provided a spark with eight points and could be a nice complement to J.R. Smith on the second unit.

Atlantic 16 double digit road underdogs are 7-4.
-- Penn lost seven of last eight games, with only win vs Binghamton of America East (#341); Quakers beat Delaware by 9 LY, but lost 84-69 to the Blue Hens Nov 12- Delaware had 15 offensive boards, scored 1.08 ppp. CAA home favorites are 5-8 against spread. Ivy League road dogs are 9-17 vs spread. Delaware also lost seven of its last eight games.
-- Bowling Green played its heart out in 11-point home loss to Michigan State Tuesday; 5-5 Falcons lost by 11 at Robert Morris in only road tilt so far this year. First game in 13 days for a 4-7 Buffalo team that is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 27-15-3 points. Single digit MAC road underdogs are 12-11 against the spread.

-- 5-6 Niagara is 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 19-17-5 points; they're 1-3 on road, with only one loss (102-83 at Oregon State) by more than 11 points. Third game in five nights for 11-1 Notre Dame, which is off for two weeks until Big East opener after this- two teams they beat this week are stiffs. MAAC double digit road underdogs are 4-5 vs spread.
-- North Dakota State won 69-57 at Morehead State Dec 5, making 15-33 from arc, surviving 22 turnovers; Bison are 2-0 at home against D-I teams, winning by 44-20 points. 5-6 Morehead State lost four of its last five games but did upset Indiana State; they're 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 22-11-12 points. OVC double digit road underdogs are 11-12.
