Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

If you like the Denver Broncos to make the Super Bowl, here are odds on who they will play in the big game in New Orleans.

5-1: 49ers-Broncos. SF tried really hard to sign Manning last spring.

9-1: Falcons-Broncos. Would be weird if Falcons won first Super Bowl in the Superdome, home field of their biggest rival.

9-1: Packers-Broncos. You know Peyton Manning is from New Orleans, right? Denver beat the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.

19-1: Seahawks-Broncos. Both teams are very, very hot right now.

35-1: Giants-Broncos. Big Blue beat Denver in Super Bowl XXI.

90-1: Bears-Broncos. Jay Cutler vs old team would be media bonanza.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Many thanks to Ken Thomson at SportsXradio.com for having me on his show last night; he's on 720am in Las Vegas from 7-9 pm. Ken knows his stuff, which is a vast understatement. Enjoyed meeting him last night.

12) If you want to bet the Super Bowl without knowing who is going to be in it, the line is AFC -2, with a total of 50.5.

11) Ricky Rubio hasn't been cleared to play in back-to-back games, so he sat out last night's game at Miami. Too bad, he's great fun to watch- if you're old enough to remember Ernie DiGregorio playing for Providence and then the Buffalo Braves, you'll see a lot of Ernie D in Rubio. Flashy passer.

10) Imagine Roger Goodell's blood pressure when he saw Josh Brent on the Dallas sideline for Sunday's game, despite Brent facing charges for drunk driving/homicide in the accident that killed friend/teammate Jerry Brown.

In this day and age, bad PR is a commissioner's nightmare, and nothing says bad PR more than an accused felon on national TV, standing on the sidelines during an NFL game. Therefore, Mr Brent won't be on the sidelines anymore.

9) The sportsbook at the Palms here in Las Vegas is tremendous; the TV screens are so clear/bright, they grab your attention. They have the in-game wagering that is very interesting, and comfortable chairs.

The food court also has the Earl of Sandwich, a tremendous sandwich shop open 24 hours a day, one of my favorites from staying at Planet Hollywood. The Earl's Club is an exceptional sandwich.

8) Palms doesn't take bets on Celtics or Kings games, due to common ownership of the casino and the teams.

7) RGIII's #10 jersey is selling at a record rate, breaking Brett Favre's old record when he played for the Jets and Vikings. Players with new teams are obviously going to sell more jerseys, but keep in mind Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck are both on new teams this year, too.

6) Jets are starting Greg McElroy this week against Chargers; this spells out how much Rex Ryan must dislike Tim Tebow as a player.

5) I'm beating a dead horse here, but seven MAC teams in bowls, while Louisiana Tech stayed home, is just ridiculous. Tech already lost its coach, as Soony Dykes bolted for the Cal Bears' job. Waste of a terrific year.

4) Stephen F Austin beat Oklahoma in Norman Tuesday night, thats a big upset for the Lumberjacks of the Southland Conference, and a bad loss for Lon Kruger and the Sooners.

3) AL West champ Oakland A's (I love typing that!!!) signed up a new SS Tuesday, 30-year old Hiroyuki Nakajima, who turned down Bronx last year because they wanted him to change positions. Thanks Derek Jeter for being so selfish that your team lost a good player because of it.

2) Utah State football coach Gary Andersen is now frontrunner for the Wisconsin job; his Aggies came to Madison and damn near beat Wisconsin in September. Football mid-majors have a real problem keeping coaches who win games-- the big boys just come in with bags of cash and poach them.

1) Lakers survived a missed Charlotte layup in last 0:05, nipped skidding Bobcats 101-100; LA is 7-9 since Mike D'Antoni took over as coach. He was 5-11 in his first 16 games with Denver, 4-12 with Phoenix and 8-8 with the Knicks. There is nothing quite as fun as being in a crowded sportsbook in the last minute of a game like this. Some poor souls sitting near me money-lined underdog Charlotte and had to take a bitter bad beat.

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that has proven profitability no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Here’s a look at some possible spot bet opportunities this week:

Letdown spot

College basketball suffered one of its uglier on-court moments last December when the “Crosstown Shootout” between Cincinnati and Xavier turned into an all-out brawl. Multiple players on both sides were suspended and the event was moved to a neutral site for the next two years.

The Bearcats and Musketeers face each other for the first time since the melee at the U. S. Bank Arena Wednesday night and emotions will be running high. Cincinnati has lost four of the last five matchups with Xavier but come in ranked 11th in the nation.

Keep an eye on Cincy's game right after the “Crosstown Shootout”. An emotionally-exhausted Cincinnati team is 5-5 SU and 2-7 ATS after playing Xavier since 2002. Oddly enough, the only SU and ATS win during that span was last year, defeating Wright State by 20 points with only nine players dressed. The Bearcats take on the Raiders again this Saturday, just three days after the “Crosstown Shootout”.

Look-ahead spot

The traditional look-ahead spot involves a game coming up on this year’s schedule, not one that opens next year’s slate.

However, Washington and Boise State will be scouting in preparation for their 2013 season-opening opponent – each other. Saturday’s Las Vegas Bowl is a Week 1 preview for the Huskies and Broncos, who open next year’s schedule at Washington on Aug. 31.

“I think it can become one of those classic rivalries that get set up,” UW head coach Steve Sarkisian told the media. “Everybody loves a good rematch, you know? Somebody’s going to win and somebody’s going to lose this first one. Then we are going to come back nine months later to see who can win the second one.”

Schedule spot

The Utah Jazz are putting Santa miles on their sleigh this week, playing four road games in six nights before a Christmas break.

Utah is in Brooklyn Tuesday before playing in Indiana Wednesday, in Miami Saturday and wrapping up the trek in Orlando Sunday. The Jazz, one of the best home bets in the NBA, are a bunch of Scooges on the road. Utah is just 4-10 SU and 4-9-1 ATS when coming down opponents’ chimneys this season.

Add to those road troubles the pressures of planning the holidays while living out of a suitcase. Utah will get home late on Dec. 23 and have a couple days off before facing Golden State at home on Dec. 26.

North Carolina at Texas: What bettors need to know

Texas has already played in the Maui Invitational and lost to Georgetown and UCLA, and the schedule gets tougher this week with games against North Carolina and Michigan State.

The week begins with a visit from the 19th-ranked Tar Heels, who have won three straight since losing to Indiana by 24 on Nov. 27. North Carolina survived a scare against East Carolina on Saturday before winning 93-87, while Texas is coming off a 12-point win over Texas State. The Longhorns have struggled while waiting for sophomore point guard Myck Kabongo to be cleared by the NCAA, which is investigating his relationship with a professional agent. Texas has won four of the last five contests against the Tar Heels and holds a 4-3 series lead in the series.

ABOUT NO. 19 NORTH CAROLINA (8-2, 5-3 ATS): Coach Roy Williams was not pleased after the Tar Heels allowed East Carolina to score 61 second-half points on Saturday. Look for the Tar Heels to be a little more aggressive in the paint after they grabbed just 10 offensive rebounds – and none by a post player – against the Pirates. Senior guard Dexter Strickland, who has 26 assists in his last three games, recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 assists against East Carolina. Why these three NBA teams just can't cover

Winning basketball games can be really broken down into three things: they don’t turn the ball over, they rebound on defense, and they hit their free throws.

If a team does those three things consistently, they’re a tough out. But if a team can’t hang on to the ball, gives up offensive boards, and throws up bricks from the stripe not only are they a loser – they’re a losing bet.

Here’s a look at three teams burning bettors through the first part of the NBA schedule and the reasons why. (Records are as of before Wednesday's games).


Dallas Mavericks (12-13 SU, 12-13 ATS)

Trouble: Turnovers

The Mavericks went 0-3 on their recent three-game road swing, losing at Minnesota, Toronto and Boston, while covering in just two of those games. Dallas has had turnover troubles all season but things got out of hand on this road run.

The Mavericks coughed the ball up 65 times during those games, including a 28-turnover fiasco in Boston. They barfed up 17 turnovers in a loss to the lowly Raptors and threw the ball away 20 times in an overtime loss to the T-Wolves.


Charlotte Bobcats (7-17 SU, 10-14 ATS)

Trouble: Defensive rebounding

The Bobcats’ list of faults rivals that of Santa’s naughty and nice count, but keeping teams off the offensive glass could be the most costly of those problems. Charlotte has watched foes pluck 13 offensive rebounds per game and boasts a 69.6 percent defensive rebound rate – worst in the NBA.

All those leaked second-chance opportunities aren’t doing Bobcats bettors any favors, even with the team getting plenty of points from oddsmakers most nights. A soft front court is to blame. Seven-footer Byron Mullens is the team’s top rebounder with just over seven boards per night.


Los Angeles Lakers (12-14 SU, 10-15-1 ATS)

Trouble: Foul shooting

Could solving the Lakers’ issues be as simple as knocking down a few free throws? When it comes to NBA bettors – yes. Los Angeles, despite its struggles, still gets respect from oddsmakers and backers need all the scoring they can get to cover those inflated spreads.

The Lakers get to the line more than any team in the league, attempting 30.3 foul shots per game. But, those points fly out the window with the team shooting a collective 68.7 percent - 29th in the NBA. That’s close to 10 points going MIA a night. Seeing that L.A.’s average margin of victory is only 2.8 points, those additional freebies would make a world of difference.
