    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in LVH handicapping contest, which has 700+ contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

    6) Green Bay Packers, 189
    T4) Houston Texans, 201
    T4) Minnesota Vikings, 201
    3) New Jersey Giants, 208
    2) San Francisco 49ers, 221
    1) Pittsburgh Steelers, 242

    25) New Jersey Jets, 77
    26) Oakland Raiders, 72
    27) New Orleans Saints, 71

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

    13) Seven non-football schools defected from the Big East, basically killing that league; not sure if they'll form their own league or merge with the A-16, but college sports gets a little more confusing every week.

    12) What do San Diego State/Boise State do now? They didn't leave the MWC to join Conference USA, but thats whats left of the Big East now. Would the Mountain West take them back? I'm guessing they would.

    11) Loyola Md is leaving the MAAC for the Patriot League, so the MAAC poached Monmouth from the NEC, to get back to ten teams.

    10) Wild start to the bowl season, as Arizona scored two TDs in last 0:46 to stun Nevada 49-48 in the New Mexico Bowl; Wildcats trailed 21-0 early on, 45-28 after three quarters, but recovered an onside kick in last minute in a game that was pretty much devoid of good defense.

Earlier in the game, two Arizona players got into a fight (with each other) on the bench. Wild game on a big day in Albuquerque, between the bowl game and then the Lobos beating in-state rival New Mexico State by 15 in The Pit.

    9) Cleveland Cavaliers have three guys playing with facial fractures; thats 25% of their active roster.

    8) Speaking of the Cavaliers, Kyrie Irving had best game of his pro career against the Knicks Saturday night, scoring 41 points the night after he broke a bone in his face. Irving only played 11 games at Duke, none in ACC play; he is the real deal.

    7) 5-11 walk-on Alex Barlow, who had 12 points in nine games coming in, scored the winning hoop as Butler beat #1 Indiana 88-86 in OT. Brad Stevens is the man, for sure; Butler has beaten Indiana/North Carolina this year.

    6) Louisville was down 16 at Memphis, rallied to beat Tigers 87-78; Cars wore foul-prone Memphis down, scored 59 points in the second half.

    5) Florida led by 6 at Arizona with 0:56 left, but lost 65-64 in game that is going to be a huge help to Arizona's seeding on Selection Sunday.

    4) Creighton got another impressive win, beating Cal 74-64 in Berkeley behind Doug McDermott's 34 points.

    3) Nothing against the Potato Bowl in Boise, I'm sure Boise is a terrific city and all, but if I'm a college football player, I'd rather not go to a bowl game where the sideline reporter is wearing gloves.

    2) Kirk Cousins gets the nod to start at QB for the Redskins Sunday, as the Redskins err on the side of caution with RGIII's knee.

    1) Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families in Connecticut that lost loved ones Friday. Not even sure what else to say about it; its just very sad.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Sunday, December 16

-- Rutgers coach Rice was suspended by school for bullying players in practice; he comes back Jan 2. Scarlet Knights won six of their last seven games, but this is odd situation. UAB lost four of last six games; they're 1-3 on road, with only win at #303 Troy; Blazers turn ball over 22.6% of time, are 0-4 vs top 100 teams, with all four losses by 12+ points.
-- Villanova beat Delaware last three years by 10-19-34 points; Wildcats are just 6-4, but beat city rivals Penn-St Joe's in last two games- they're 2-2 at home, losing to Columbia/Temple. Hens won at Virginia Nov 13, but lost six of seven games since; they're 1-4 on road, with three losses by 7 or less points. Delaware is overscheduled (#12 schedule so far).
-- DePaul beat Northern Illinois last two years by 2-23 points; Demons upset Arizona State in Tempe Wednesday, their fifth win in a row. NIU is horrible, with only win in seven games vs D-I opponents over #310 SIU-Edwardsville- they turn ball over 24.8% of time, make just 27.1% behind arc. DePaul won by 32-31-10-34 vs teams not in top 200.
-- Central Michigan is 0-3 on road, losing by 12 at Iowa, 16 at Utah, 12 at Charlotte; Chippewas beat Pepperdine 67-57 at home LY. Waves are 6-1 in last seven games, but only one of six wins was vs a team ranked higher than #170, and three of seven games went to OT. Central turns ball over 23% of time, makes just 42% of shots inside arc.
-- Appalachian State is 0-7 vs D-I teams, who shot 57.1% inside arc vs ASU; five of Mountaineers' last six games were on road- they lost by 6-12-19 points vs teams not ranked in top 200. UMKC is 4-5, but they're 3-0 vs teams not in top 200, winning by 6-14-3 points; Kangaroos turn ball over 24% of time, shoot just 42.7% inside the arc.

-- Fifth straight home game for 3-6 James Madison squad that has been off for 8 days; Dukes have four seniors in their rotation, which isn't so good considering slow start. NC-Greensboro hasn't played in 15 days, a very long layoff; they're #3 in country at fouling too much. Spartans are 0-2 on road, losing by 8 at High Point, 3 at East Carolina.
-- Home side won four of last five Western Kentucky-Murray St, tilts; Hilltoppers lost last two visits here, 69-60/89-61, and also lost by 11 at home to Murray LY. WKU won its last six games; its losses are by 3 at Southern Miss, 8 at DePaul. First game in 8 days for Murray, which got down 16 early in last game at Evansville, but rallied to win 82-70.
-- Austin Peay is turning ball over 26.8% of time; they are 0-3 on road, losing by 20-31-18 points, but all three of those teams are ranked #131 or better; Peay beat Arkansas State 86-82 in OT LY at home. ASU is 4-3 vs D-I teams, but only one of four wins was vs team in top 300- they also have two losses vs teams not in the top 200.
-- 3-6 Drexel was supposed to be #1 team in CAA, but they're 0-6 when they allow 66+ points- they gave up 59 or less points in three wins. LY, Dragons beat Fairfield 77-69 at home. Stags are 6-5 but haven't beaten anyone higher than #170 Central Connecticut; Fairfield won three of last four games overall; they split their two home games so far.
-- #173 Eastern Kentucky is 9-0; they run lot of Princeton offense; am guessing Illinois scheduled them to prep for playing Northwestern, team that also runs Princeton stuff. EKU has played #345 (out of 347) sked in America. #195 Western Carolina is only team they've played ranked higher than #230. Illinois is 4-0 vs top 200 teams; all wins were by 11+.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 9-Dec. 15

                Hottest ATS team

Denver Nuggets – This week: 3-1 ATS, Season: 14-10 ATS

The Nuggets have covered in three straight games and four of their last five. Denver is averaging 101.6 points over its last three contests and is coming off a huge win over Memphis on Friday. The Nuggets hit the road for a date with the Kings on Sunday afternoon before heading back to the friendly confines of the Pepsi Center for a tough matchup with the Spurs on Tuesday.

                Coldest ATS team

Los Angeles Lakers – This week: 0-3-1 ATS, Season: 9-14-1 ATS

The Lakers snapped a four-game losing streak Friday with a victory over the lowly Wizards, but the six-point margin of victory was only good enough to earn a push. Los Angeles failed to cover against New York, Cleveland and Utah last week. The Lakers finish off their four-game road swing Sunday in Philadelphia before returning to the Staples Center where the Bobcats will be waiting for them.

                Hottest over bet

                New York Knicks – This week: 4-0 O/U, Season: 13-8-2 O/U

The Knicks have won four straight, playing over the total in each of those victories. New York is averaging a whopping 107.7 points per game during the over run, but could be slowed in the future due to Carmelo Anthony’s ankle injury. The forward is questionable Monday when the Knicks host the Rockets in the first contest of a four-game homestand.

                Hottest under bet

                Toronto Raptors – This week: 0-4 O/U, Season: 12-12 O/U

The Raptors have played under the number in four consecutive games and could continue to be a good under play heading into next week. Center Andrea Bargnani (elbow) and guard Kyle Lowry (tricep) both fell to injuries on Dec. 10 at Portland. Both key starters could miss significant time, leaving a gaping hole in the Toronto offense. The Raptors host Houston on Sunday before packing their bags for a short trip to Cleveland for a date with the Cavs.

                Scouting the schedule:

-The Charlotte Bobcats suffered their 11th consecutive defeat Saturday night when they fell to the Magic. Charlotte heads out on a west-coast road trip early next week and plays four games in five days. The Bobcats are 3-8 ATS during the losing skid.

-The Minnesota Timberwolves are riding a four-game winning streak, but face some formidable foes next week. The T-Wolves hit the road to take on the Magic and Heat on back-to-back nights. Then square off against Oklahoma City and New York to close out the week.
