    Armadillo: Weekend's six-pack

-- Josh Hamilton gets $125M for five years from the Angels. Should make the Anaheim-Texas rivalry a little more interesting.

-- Lakers are now 2-8 on the road after losing 116-107 to the Knicks.

-- Interesting part of Tom Watson being Captain of the Ryder Cup team is apparently, he and Eldrick Woods don't get along very well.

-- The seven non-football schools in the Big East have apparently defected, making it 17 teams to bolt the Big East, just in the last eight years. TCU set a new standard by bolting the league before they ever played a game there.

-- At what point do the NHL owners wise up and realize how much they are crippling their own business with this lockout? They were doing so bad last year that they couldn't continue?

-- Rutgers suspended coach Mike Rice for three games, fined him $50,000, plus the $24,000 or so he'll lose from those three games, for doing stuff in practice, stuff like throwing basketballs at players' heads. Just fire him, but then the AD who hired him would be under fire. So Rice gets suspended.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here......

    13) ESPN.com's Todd McShay did a mock NFL draft; his first six players were all linemen. In other words, not a very strong draft.

    12) Top QB will either be West Virginia's Geno Smith or Matt Barkley of USC, who lost a lot of money by staying in school this year.

    11) Oklahoma State booster T. Boone Pickens bought the last 4,000 tickets to Cowboys' December 31 game with Gonzaga, then had school give them away on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tickets were gone in 90 minutes.

    10) Kevin Youkilis is the 52nd big league All-Star who will play for both the Red Sox and Bronx Bombers. Eight members of the '04 Red Sox later went on to play in the Bronx; thats a little weird.

    9) Michigan beat Binghamton Tuesday night, committing only four fouls the whole game. 30 years ago, when I was in college, Binghamton was such a lousy D-III program they didn't always open both sides of their gym for home games. They played Albany one night with an intramural game being played on the other side of the gym divider. Now they're playing Michigan.

    8) Kurt Warner has a new reality show on USA Network starting in April, where he gives nine every-day people the chance to pursue the career of their dreams. Don't think any of the nine chose bagging groceries.

    7) Skip Holtz is new football coach at Louisiana Tech; not sure why South Florida pulled the plug so fast on him, but I think he's a good coach and will do well at Tech.

    6) One of the cool things about college sports is how some schools are powers in one sport, and doormats in others. Duke-Kentucky-UNLV are dreadful in football, but always win in hoops. Nebraska-Penn State-Virginia Tech are perennial top 20 football teams, but struggle in basketball.

    5) Duke lost its last four games, finished 6-6, but is still going to a bowl game; will they bring any fans to Charlotte with them?

    4) 11 of 13 NBA games Wednesday were decided by 7 or less points. Just an excellent night of entertainment.

    3) Jay Cutler has a sprained MCL, should still start against the Packers Sunday, but more and more, the Bears seem like a sinking ship.

    2) Wichita State lost 69-60 at Tennessee, its first loss this season, to a team that scored 36-38 points in its last two games.

    1) Honest question: If you owned an NFL team that needed a QB, say you're the Arizona Cardinals, would you make a move for Michael Vick?

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.......

    32) Cardinals—Worst QB play the NFL has seen since the ’76-’77 Bucs started out 0-26 in the NFL. Should be noted that the ’79 Bucs played in the NFC title game.

    31) Chiefs—Will be lot of relieved people when this season ends December 30; some of them will soon be unemployed, but they will still be relieved this debacle is behind them.

    30) Raiders—This just dawned on me; why did they leave LA and go back to Oakland; isn’t LA a better place to own a team than the Bay Area? Al Davis got a pass from the media for lot of the things he did late in his career.

??) Eagles—Someone is going to be lucky to get Andy Reid as coach next year, but this year has been awful for him; all four of their wins are by 1 or 2 points. Turned ball over three times in 71 seconds Thursday night.

    9) Giants—Defending champs were 7-7 after 14 games LY and won Super Bowl. Have tough road games next two weeks (Falcons/Ravens), could have trouble holding off Cowboys/Redskins.

    8) Seahawks—I’m still mystified why Tom O’Brien ran Russell Wilson off at NC State; won’t this hamper him getting hired anywhere else? How does he explain that? Seahawks better not look ahead to next week's 49er game.

    7) Colts—Got squashed at Foxboro, in their first game on a really big stage; this is their second chance, against a Texan team smarting after they got hammered by the Patriots. Indy could still win the AFC South.

    6) 49ers—Interesting cold weather game Sunday night in Foxboro, followed by another primetime road game, again possibly in bad weather, at Seattle, which is on Jim Harbaugh’s birthday.

    5) Falcons—The least respected 11-2 team in NFL history. Beating the Giants this week would help their perception.

    4) Packers—Jordy Nelson. Wes Welker. Danny Amendola. Brandon Stokley. The Hartline kid on Miami; these are guys who almost always make clutch catches to keep the chains moving, and help your field position. Its not talked about much on TV, but average starting field position is a huge stat.

    3) Broncos—Denver has Stokley and Eric Decker, two of those possession guys; they also have a pretty good QB. John Fox has won eight games in a row; he’s a happy man.

    2) Texans—Got beaten badly in both losses, but what does it matter? Don’t think they’ll lose a home playoff game. Jeff Van Gundy has season tickets, by the way.

    1) Patriots—Hard to argue they’re not the best team right now, but do not think they’ll win AFC title. Much like last year’s 49ers, they’re relying too much on forcing turnovers.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Celtics at Rockets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets (-2.5, 205.5)

The road has not been very kind to the Boston Celtics so far. A three-game trip starting at the Houston Rockets on Friday is going to make it tough to change their fortunes. The Celtics have won four straight at home after surviving the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday but have dropped four of their last five away from TD Garden. The Rockets have been much better at home and appear to be getting their defense under control.

Houston had surrendered an average of 113.6 points in its previous eight games before settling down in a 99-93 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. The Celtics will provide a stiffer offensive test, with point guard Rajon Rondo playing well and Paul Pierce coming off his highest scoring total of the season. It’s likely that both Rondo and Pierce and perhaps a few others will take turns guarding Houston leading scorer James Harden, who scored 31 points in his return to the lineup Wednesday after missing a game.

                TV:
8 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSNNE (Boston), CSH (Houston)

ABOUT THE CELTICS (12-9, 8-11-2 ATS):
Boston has been getting better on the defensive end the last two weeks, having held six straight opponents below 100 points before a 117-115 double overtime win over the Mavericks on Wednesday. The Celtics forced 28 turnovers in that game, including three in the final 1:07 of the second overtime. Boston’s improvement on the defensive end has given the offense a chance to gel. Pierce is leading the team in scoring at 19.9 points but had been held below 20 in five of the previous six before exploding for 34 against Dallas. The one consistent threat on offense has been Rondo, who has reached double figures in assists in all but one of his starts and has pulled down 10.3 rebounds in the last three contests.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (10-11, 9-11-1 ATS):
Houston has had its own problems on defense and ranks last in the NBA in points allowed, surrendering an average of 104.8. The offense, which puts up 104.2, has been able to bail the team out at times but could not keep up during the recent losing streak. Wednesday was a switch in the other direction, as the Rockets held the Wizards to 39.3 percent shooting. Harden, who sat out Tuesday’s 134-126 overtime loss to San Antonio with a sprained ankle, returned to the lineup with 31 points in the win over Washington. Harden has pulled out of a lengthy shooting slump by connecting on 50 percent or better from the field in each of the last three games.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Houston.
                * Celtics are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Houston.
                * Underdog is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings.
                * Road team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. Rockets PG Jeremy Lin, who exploded for a season-high 38 points without Harden on Tuesday but was back down to 10 on 4-of-8 shooting Wednesday. Lin has been held to 10 points or less in four of the last five contests.

                2. Pierce has averaged 21.6 points in 24 career games against Houston.

                3. Boston had taken three straight in Houston before dropping its last trip, 93-77, on Mar. 18, 2011.

Angels sign Hamilton; futures odds on the move

Highly-coveted free-agent outfielder Josh Hamilton has signed a five-year, $125 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels, according to numerous reports.

Mike Perry, oddsmaker at Sportsbook.ag, has moved the Angels from 10/1 to 7/1 to win the World Series and 5/1 to 4/1 to capture the AL pennant upon hearing news of the signing. The LVH SuperBook also had the Angels listed as 10/1 favorites to win the Fall Classic on Monday.

“We haven’t moved Texas yet, as we assume they may make a couple more moves themselves now that they have more money to use,” Perry told Covers.

Hamilton, 31, belted a career-high 43 home runs last season for the Rangers and is a five-time All-Star.

The Angels have been busy this offseason, previously acquiring pitchers Joe Blanton and Tommy Hanson.
