    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Shin-Soo Choo got traded to the Reds as part of a 9-player, 3-team deal that sent pitching prospect Trevor Bauer to Cleveland.

-- Kevin Youkilis gets $12M to play one year in the Bronx.

-- West Virginia was up 13 at half at Duquesne, lost by 4, bad loss for the Mountaineers, who don't look like a tournament team right now.

-- Wizards held New Orleans to 28 second half points, won 77-70; they're 3-3 in last six games, after an ugly 0-12 start.

-- Knicks beat Nets by 3 in Brooklyn, after trailing by 17 in game that did not feel like a regular season tilt. Pretty good rivalry building there.

-- Lakers are 9-13 after losing by 6 in Cleveland; Dwight Howard was -10 in 41:00, he was 13-22 from foul line, good for him, but LA was +4 in 7:00 he was off the floor.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Grading the NFC coaches.........

John Harbaugh, Ravens—8 of their 13 games have been decided by 3 or less points; firing your OC on December 10 is a huge red flag, especially when you replace him with Jim Caldwell. Grade: B.

Chan Gailey, Bills—Lost at home to Titans/Rams, giving up game-winning TDs in last minute of both games. If the Fitzpatrick contract was his doing, then he should be fired. Grade: C-.

Marvin Lewis, Bengals—Job he has done here is underrated, working for cheapskate owner Brown. Defense is sturdy; young QB Dalton is a keeper. Grade: B.

Pat Shurmur, Browns—Working under new owner who didn’t hire him; guy who did hire him is already gone, making it tough. Current 3-game win streak with (28-year old) rookie QB might get him another HC job down road if he gets canned here. Grade: B-.

John Fox, Broncos—Happiest man in America, upgrading from Tebow to Manning at QB. Survived early brutal schedule, now on serious roll. Could lift Lombardi Trophy soon. Grade: A.

Gary Kubiak, Texans—11-2, but two losses were one-sided in primetime, so naysayers still exist. Really need to get home field so playoff games are in dome, so two games with Indy in next three weeks are critical.

Bruce Arians, Colts— I’m not kidding when I say they’re going to make a movie about the ’12 Colts. Interim coach has been terrific under difficult conditions; definite Coach of Year in NFL. Grade: A+.

Mike Mularkey, Jaguars—Team has played much better on road, amidst rumors they could wind up playing anywhere from LA to London. Henne is better QB than Gabbert, but Gabbert was high draft pick of previous regime. Grade: C-.

Romeo Crennel, Chiefs—Dismal season became 100 times worse after murder/suicide two weeks ago. Would be surprised if all coaches/front office weren’t canned in three weeks. Grade: F.

Joe Philbin, Dolphins—Have done solid job staying competitive with sub-par talent/rookie QB. If Bill Polian says this is excellent staff, that’s all you need to know. Grade: B-.

Bill Belichick, Patriots—All they do is win. Plus-24 turnover ratio has them headed for first-round bye in playoffs, but Denver is right on their heels for that. Grade: A.

Rex Ryan, Jets—Lot of this is on front office, which allowed team to become shameless circus act with media. Whoever thought Tebow was a good idea is an idiot—no way was it Rex, who at least has the sense to be quieter now. Grade: D.

Dennis Allen, Raiders—Was defensive coordinator in Denver LY, but his defense this year fell apart. They have to give him time; changing coaches every year makes no sense, and has never worked. Grade: D.

Mike Tomlin, Steelers—Very difficult when the star QB gets hurt, but Big Ben had bum shoulder in offseason and never got it fixed. Why? His tenure here has been solid, but this year has been less so. Grade: C.

Norv Turner, Chargers—He was coach of Redskins last time they won a division title, but his time with Chargers is up. Someone would be wise to scoop him up as a OC next year. Grade: F.

Mike Munchak, Titans—His job would be easier if his young QB wasn’t a righthanded Tebow; well, he’s better than that, but not by a lot. Bud Adams was a fool for letting Jeff Fisher out of Nashville. Grade: D+.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

The Houston Texans’ embarrassing loss to New England Monday night was the NFL’s equivalent of being “pantsed” in the middle of the school yard.

Houston stood bare-assed in front of the nation, unable to hide its shame in time before football bettors got a good look at what really lies beneath.

The Texans, who opened as high as -9.5 for Week 15’s home date with the Indianapolis Colts, have been adjusted to as low as 7-point favorites at some online sportsbooks.

Even before the 42-14 thrashing in Foxborough, bettors weren’t sold on Houston being such a big favorite over a feisty Indianapolis squad. The Colts have won three in a row and are 7-1 SU and ATS in their last eight games.

The lone blemish during that span was a loss to New England in Week 11, which played out similar to Houston’s defeat Monday night. Indianapolis was rolled 59-24 as a 10-point road underdog by the Patriots.

The Texans were showing chinks in the armor before Week 14, failing to meet oddsmakers’ expectations in two of the three previous games and are now just 1-3 ATS in the last four outings. The biggest issue in those games has been the downfall of the defense. After ranking among the top in the league for most of the year, Houston has hemorrhaged an average of 30 points against in its last four contests.

Houston sits at 11-2 SU atop the AFC South and while it has clinched a postseason spot, the division crown will come down to the final three games – two of which are against the 9-4 SU Colts.

Here are some other lines making football bettors go “Hmmm…” heading into the weekend:

      NFL

Carolina Panthers at San Diego Chargers (-3, 46)

The Chargers are the most schizophrenic team in the NFL.

San Diego loses when it should win and wins when it should lose, like last Sunday’s cross-country trip to soggy Pittsburgh. The Bolts shocked the Steelers 34-24 as 7-point underdogs and snapped a four-game skid.

Apparently, that was enough for oddsmakers, who have the Chargers tagged as field-goal favorites at home to a dangerous Carolina team in Week 15.

The Panthers, who have suffered close loss after close loss this season, are coming off a big win over Atlanta. Quarterback Cam Newton finally pulled out of his sophomore slump, passing for 287 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for an additional 116 yards and a score.

This one may have “letdown spot” written all over it as far as Carolina is concerned. But if Newton plays with that confidence in Week 15, there is nothing the beleaguered Bolts can do.

      NCAAF

Toledo Rockets vs. Utah State Aggies (-10, 58)

The Aggies were ATS darlings all season, posting a stunning 10-1-1 mark against the spread.

Utah State earned a spot versus Toledo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and has moved from an 8-point favorite to -10, with early action drawn to that ATS windfall.

The Aggies have made a name for themselves as live dogs in recent years and barked loud and proud again this season, going 4-0 ATS as underdogs against the likes of Utah, Wisconsin, BYU and San Jose State. Now, USU faces a foe cut from the same cloth.

Toledo has never backed down from a fight and was also perfect against the spread as an underdog this season, going 5-0 ATS when getting the points. The Rockets almost knocked off Arizona in the season opener, lost by six to Cincinnati, and nearly dashed Northern Illinois’ BCS bowl hopes in Week 12.

Utah State played in this bowl last December, its first postseason appearance since 1997, and lost 24-23 to Ohio as a 1-point favorite on the “Smurf Turf” of Bronco Stadium.

See spot, see spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that has proven profitability no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Here’s a look at some possible spot bet opportunities this week:

        Letdown spot

Teams don’t always have to win in order to set up a letdown spot. The Houston Rockets did everything but win versus the San Antonio Spurs Monday, losing 134-126 in overtime.

Houston was without star shooting guard James Harden (sprained ankle) and finally got its money’s worth out of free-agent acquisition Jeremy Lin, who tied a career high with 38 points in the loss.

While it’s still early in the NBA schedule, a win over the Spurs would have gone a long way for the Rockets in the Western Conference standings. Now Houston has to avoid a hangover with the lowly Washington Wizards coming to town Wednesday.

        Look-ahead spot

The Seattle Seahawks will take the national stage for Sunday Night Football on Dec. 23 after the league shuffled its Week 16 slate to better accommodate NBC. Seattle hosts the San Francisco 49ers that night with the NFC West title possibly hanging in the balance.

But before that massive matchup with the Niners, the Seahawks get their passports stamped and travel to Toronto for a meeting with the Buffalo Bills. Oddsmakers opened Seattle as a 4-point favorite but that number has since been bet up to -5.5. The Seahawks set a franchise record for points in a single game and handed Arizona its worst loss ever in a 58-0 thumping this past week.

        Schedule spot

The Florida Gators head west for one of their biggest non-conference games of the year this weekend. Florida faces the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson Saturday night, with a late start time of 10 p.m. ET.

Not only does the tipoff (8 p.m. in Tucson) work against the Gators but the long layoff during midterms halts any momentum UF has gained en route to a 7-0 SU (4-1 ATS) start to the season.

The Gators played those seven games – and half of one versus Georgetown on the deck of the USS Bataan – in a span of 24 days and never left the Sunshine State. Now, they head into Arizona having been off for 10 days.

Florida lost to Rutgers as an 8.5-point road favorite in overtime last December, was upset by Jacksonville (no odds) in December the year before that, and suffered a three-game skid – capped off by a shocker to South Alabama (+19) – in December 2009.

Warriors at Heat: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Miami Heat (-9.5, 204)

The Golden State Warriors have had no problems so far on their seven-game road trip. Things will get a little more difficult at the next stop. The Warriors will put their four-game winning streak on the line when they visit the defending champion Miami Heat on Wednesday. The Heat have taken back-to-back games and are 10-1 at home while leading the Eastern Conference in scoring. After a brief stumble last week, Miami has been strong of late.

Golden State’s duo of Stephen Curry and David Lee continues to power the team forward. The two combined for 52 points in Monday’s win at Charlotte and have each gone over 20 in all four games of the road trip. The Warriors have taken 11 of the last 14 overall to put pressure on the Los Angeles Clippers atop the Pacific Division. The Heat have their own dynamic duo in LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, along with Chris Bosh on the inside to battle with Lee.

                  TV:
7:30 p.m. ET, CSBA (Golden State), SUN (Miami)

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (14-7, 13-7-1 ATS):
The road finally looked like it was getting to Golden State in the fourth quarter at Charlotte, when the Warriors managed just three field goals. Luckily, they entered that frame with a 19-point lead and held on for the win. Curry and Lee have been so consistent that Golden State is now just looking around for other people to step up and shoulder some of the load. Jarrett Jack and Carl Landry combined for 28 off the bench in that regard on Monday. The Warriors have gone over 100 points in each of the first four games of the road trip but things get more difficult on the back end. After Miami, Golden State heads to Orlando to face the Magic, who earned a 102-94 win in Oakland on Dec. 3, before finishing up with another playoff contender in the Atlanta Hawks.

ABOUT THE HEAT (14-5, 9-10 ATS):
Miami is enjoying a stretch of 10 of 11 games at home and has tightened things up on the defensive end in the last two games. After allowing 108.5 points in back-to-back losses, the Heat have held New Orleans and Atlanta to 91. Wade has also picked up his efficiency. The star guard has struggled with his shot off and on this season but is a combined 20 of 25 from the field in the last two. The Heat dropped the lone meeting with the Warriors last season, 111-106 in overtime at Golden State. Wade went for 34 points and James had 26 but Miami allowed four scorers to reach 20 points for the Warriors, including Lee’s 20 and 14 rebounds.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Warriors are 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings in Miami.
                  * Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.

                  * Underdog is 5-1-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

                  BUZZER BEATERS:

                  1. Curry has reached 20 points in a career-high eight straight games. He is averaging 14 points on 43.6 percent shooting in three career games against the Heat.

                  2. Heat F Udonis Haslem (illness) missed Monday’s game and is day-to-day.

                  3. Lee has recorded a double-double in four straight and 13 of the last 17 games.
