    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- This is the second time ever it snowed in Dallas before Chicago; the other time was 1952.

-- I knew Brandon McCarthy signed with Arizona, but I didn't realize they gave him $15.5M for two years. Thats some serious cheese.

-- Who fired Cam Cameron; John Harbaugh or owner Steve Bisciotti?

-- Western Kentucky hired Bobby Petrino as football coach; what would be the over/under on how long he stays there? Colorado hired San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre; these mid-major teams don't get to enjoy their bowls-- the coaches always leave!!!!

-- ESPN Bowl Week is 17 days long; wish they calculated my vacations.

-- Because Christmas Eve/New Year's Eve are on Mondays, next week is the last Monday night NFL game this year: Jets-Titans. Whoops.

    *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Grading the NFC coaches.........

Ken Whisenhunt, Cardinals—4-0 start turned into a 4-9 debacle, mainly because of the worst QB play the NFL has seen since Jerry Golsteyn’s day in the league. Hire a QB coach, sir, one who played pro football. Grade: F

Mike Smith, Falcons—they’re 11-2 and might not play another outdoor game all season. Smith needs to win at least one playoff game this season, or he could turn into this generation’s Chuck Knox. Not the worst thing in the world, just not the best. Grade: A-

Ron Rivera, Panthers—Hard to work for a franchise that willingly let John Fox walk; looks like they’d rather have a coach who works cheap. Former Alabama coach Mike Shula coaching Auburn alum Cam Newton is a bad fit. Grade: D

Lovie Smith, Bears—Started fast, but team is fading with Urlacher out hurt; they’re 7-16 when he can’t play and he’s out for rest of regular season. Grade: B-

Jason Garrett, Cowboys—Most overrated franchise in sports (one playoff win last 16 years) has won three of last four games, and has shown offensive life late in games. Defense is lacking playmakers; if only they had a real GM. Grade: C+.

Jim Schwartz, Lions—Tied NFL record this week by losing third straight game when they had a 10+ point lead in all three games. Game management has been suspect. Defense takes too many cheap penalties. Grade: C-

Mike McCarthy, Packers—All they do is win. Still amusing that Aaron Rodgers wasn’t offered a college scholarship out of high school. Grade: A.

Leslie Frazier, Vikings—Had three TDs Sunday, but one was on defense, another on a 5-yard drive; won at Detroit this year without an offensive TD. Still not convinced Ponder is QB they need. Hope he doesn’t prove me wrong this week. Grade: B-

Tom Coughlin, Giants—Two-time Super Bowl champ is in shadows of Jets’ freak show, which is just how he wants it. In first place again, on his way to Canton. Grade: B+

Joe Vitt, Saints—NFL screwed the Saints bigtime in that whole bounty thing; NFL Films used to make light of bounties, before concussion-based lawsuits became a reality. Super Bowl week night not be fun for Mr Goodell on Bourbon Street. Grade: C-

Andy Reid, Eagles— Nothing ends well, or else it wouldn't end. There are times when a divorce benefits both sides. Reid has had the cruelest of years, both on and off the field. I’m thinking 2013 will be a lot better for him. This year was horrific. Grade: F for this year, but an A for his tenure in Philly.

Jeff Fisher, Rams—This franchise is 15-65 last five years, was 2-14 last year, but is 6-6-1 this year with a patchwork offensive line and a subpar group of WRs. How did Bud Adams let this man walk? I’m prejudiced, but……. Grade: A

Jim Harbaugh, 49ers—Switch to Kaepernick at QB is what he wanted to do all along; he obviously doesn’t think Alex Smith is a franchise QB and he has to do what he thinks is best. Grade: A-

Pete Carroll, Seahawks—Inserting Russell Wilson at QB turned out to be brilliant, but what will they do with Flynn this winter? Winning road games will get tougher if both starting CBs get suspended for Adderall. Grade: A-.

Greg Schiano, Bucs—when Tampa Bay hired him, I almost choked on my food, but he has given team toughness and has improved their record. That’s his job. Read a wild article that said how disliked he is league-wide, but its not a popularity contest. Grade: B+.

Mike Shanahan, Redskins—RGIII is the man, which keeps the Shanahans employed, since they don’t have a first round pick again until 2015. Redskins are one of the most fun teams to watch. Grade: B+.

Pucking the trends: AHL betting news and notes

No NHL. No problem. Check out the latest betting news and notes from the young guns in the AHL.

      Hot Team: Providence Bruins

After a rough start to the season that had them sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, the Bruins are 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games and are a point behind the division-leading Worcester Sharks.

Veterans Chris Bourque and Jamie Tardif are leading the resurgence. Bourque has nine assists in his last 10 games, while Tardif has six goals in his last six games and leads the team with 10 on the season. But the real force driving Providence’s success is rookie goaltender Niklas Svedberg, who has held his opponents to two or fewer goals in nine of his last 11 starts.

Most of the Bruins’ recent wins have been close games (three of their last four games needed overtime or a shootout), so Svedberg will have to remain sharp for Providence to gain the division lead.

      Cold Team: Charlotte Checkers

Charlotte’s hold on the South Division remains tenuous after winning one of three games this weekend. The Checkers are 3-6-0-1 in their last 10 and hold a one-point lead on the Houston Aeros and Texas Stars.

Charlotte was the league leader in goals scored, but aside from a 5-1 victory over Lake Erie last Friday, the Checkers have struggled to score more than two goals in a game on their recent homestand, which will last three more games for a total of 10. Charlotte’s home record is 4-7-0-0 and its power-play is half as efficient at home (14%) as it is on the road (28%).

Considering how well Charlotte scores on the road (49 goals scored in 13 away games), the homestand can’t end soon enough.

      Prospect Watch: San Antonio Rampage

Jacob Markstrom, widely considered the future of Florida Panthers goaltending, was named AHL player of the week after leading the Rampage to four straight wins over the Abbotsford Heat and Oklahoma City Barons.

Markstrom allowed just two goals on 70 shots in two wins over Abbotsford before containing the offensive-powerhouse Barons to five total goals in two wins over Oklahoma City. Markstrom finished November with a pair of victories, giving him a personal winning streak of six in a row.

San Antonio is two points away from climbing out of the basement of the South Division. Whether or not it does depends entirely on Markstrom’s performance.

      Surveying the schedule:

      - The St. John’s Sea Dogs have a busy week, hosting Hershey on Tuesday and Wednesday before travelling to Springfield and Providence on the weekend to kick off a road trip that will continue into the new year.

      - The Hamilton Bulldogs begin the week at home hosting Lake Erie on Tuesday before travelling to Chicago on Thursday. They will remain in the midwest for the weekend, facing Rockford and Milwaukee.

Knicks at Nets: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Brooklyn Nets (+1.5, 191)

The New York Knicks have a score to settle with the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night, and it couldn't come at a more opportune time with their city neighbors mired in a four-game slide. New York will make its second trip to the brand-new Barclays Center and is seeking to avenge a 96-89 overtime loss to Brooklyn before a boisterous crowd on Nov. 26. That game left the Knicks and Nets tied atop the Atlantic Division with 9-4 records, but the teams have gone in opposite directions since the end of November.

New York has won six of its last seven and is 4-1 this month while Brooklyn has followed up a five-game winning streak by going 0-4 in December to fall 3 1/2 games off the pace in the division. The skid includes three straight home losses for the Nets, who had won seven of their first eight at the Barclays Center. Even the two-game absence of Carmelo Anthony failed to slow the Knicks, who went into Miami and pounded the defending NBA champions by 20 points without their superstar forward.

                TV:
                7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT NEW YORK (15-5, 13-7 ATS):
Anthony returned to the lineup to score 34 points against his former teammates as the Knicks outlasted Denver on Sunday to improve to 8-0 at Madison Square Garden. New York is the only team that has yet to lose at home and has its next six games at MSG following the matchup with Brooklyn. Knicks C Tyson Chandler, who leads the league in field goal percentage (70.9), has five double-doubles in his last six games and torched the Nets for 28 points (on 12-of-13 shooting) and 10 rebounds in their last matchup.

                ABOUT BROOKLYN (11-8, 10-7-2 ATS):
Leading scorer Brook Lopez (18.5 ppg) has sat out the past five games with a sprained right foot - during which Brooklyn went 1-4 - but the biggest issue of late has come at the defensive end. After not allowing an opponent to reach 90 points during a five-game winning streak, the Nets have surrendered an average of 106.2 points during the four-game skid. The 7-0 center practiced on Monday and has been listed as a game-time decision. Lopez had 22 points and 11 boards in the first meeting.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                * Knicks are 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings at the Nets.
                * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings at the Nets.
                * Road team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. The Nets (4-0) are the only Atlantic team with a perfect division record.

                2. The Knicks, who average a league-best 11.9 3-pointers made, were only 6-for-21 in the first matchup.

                3. New York has won six of the last eight meetings, including two of three last season.
