    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in LVH handicapping contest, which has 700+ contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

    6) Minnesota Vikings, 154
    5) Baltimore Ravens, 158
    T3) Cleveland Browns, 159
    T3) New England Patriots, 159
    2) Cincinnati Bengals, 185
    1) Carolina Panthers, 202

    25) Miami Dolphins, 83
    26) New Jersey Giants, 82
    27) Kansas City Chiefs, 78
    28) Jacksonville Jaguars, 75
    29) Seattle Seahawks, 63
    31) San Diego Chargers, 40

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff on a quiet weekend...........

    13) Zack Greinke signed a $147M contract with the Dodgers; this is a guy who suffers from social anxiety and depression. Can buy a lot of medication with $147M. The Dodgers are the new Bronx Bombers, free spenders.

    12) Dodgers are paying Crawford-Kemp-Gonzalez-Greinke around $87M next year; Tampa Bay/Kansas City have never had payrolls for their whole team over $75M.

    11) Bill DeWitt Jr. bought the Cardinals for $150 million in 1995; thats an entire franchise. Dodgers just paid $3M less for one guy.

    10) Sad to see Brandon McCarthy leave Oakland for the Diamondbacks, but fact of matter is, he was taking extra days in between starts before he got hit in the head and fractured his skull last September; was fairly obvious he had some kind of an arm problem, but was pitching through it.

    9) Luol Deng is first Chicago Bull to play 40+ minutes in all four games of a 4-in-5-night stretch since Michael Jordan in December 1986.

    8) Two caddies got into a fight by the putting green before the first round of the Australian Open Thursday; why do I always miss the good stuff?

    7) Atlanta Falcons have best record in NFC, but #1 FOX broadcast team, Joe Buck/Troy Aikman, hasn't called one of their games yet. People are slow to realize that Atlanta-Houston are the two best teams in the NFL.

    6) Listed attendance for UCLA-Texas at Reliant Stadium was 2,797; is that possibly correct? High school games draw more than that.

    5) USC has played eight lined games this year, they're 0-8 vs spread in first halves. Kevin O'Neill and Ben Howland both have to be on thin ice in LA.

    4) Villanova beat Penn 68-55 Saturday night; four Wildcats took seven shots, no one on Penn took more than six. Can't remember seeing a boxscore where no players took more than seven shots from floor, though there were 71 foul shots in the game.

    3) Tennessee hired Butch Jones to replace Derek Dooley; Cincinnati hired Tommy Tuberville to replace Jones, so it would make sense if Tech hired Dooley to replace Tuberville, right?

    2) Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez said the Big Dozen added Rutgers/Maryland as a deterrent to Penn State bolting for another league. When does all of this stop? It will stop, right?

    1) Best story of the week is a mom taking her 3-year old to see Santa Claus at a store in Toronto; little kid is wearing a Maple Leafs' hat. Santa decides to bust the kid's balls, asks him why is he wearing Leafs' gear, because the Leafs suck. Kid left store crying, mom wasn't very happy. Store fired Santa; he's lucky the mom didn't wait in the parking lot to kick his butt.

    Happy holidays, everyone!!!!

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 2-Dec. 8

                      Hottest ATS team

San Antonio Spurs – This week: 3-0 ATS, Season: 14-6-1

San Antonio has covered in three straight and six of its last seven games. The Spurs rolled to convincing victories over the Bucks, Rockets and Bobcats this week to dethrone Oklahoma City as the best cover team in the league heading into action on Sunday. San Antonio continues its four-game road trip this week with stops in Houston, Utah and Portland.

                      Coldest ATS team

Cleveland Cavaliers – This week: 0-3 ATS, Season: 9-12

The Cavs have been failing miserably ATS since budding star Kyrie Irving (finger) was lost due to injury on Nov. 21. Cleveland is 0-5 ATS in its last five games and coach Byron Scott is hopeful that Irving and backcourt partner Dion Waiters (ankle) will be able to suit up for the team’s next game against the Lakers on Tuesday.

                      Hottest over bet

Los Angeles Clippers – This week: 3-0 over, Season: 13-6 O/U

The Clippers have played over the total in seven straight games, thanks to their high-powered offense. Los Angeles is averaging 110 points over its last five contests and is tied with Golden State for the best over mark in the league. The Clippers host Toronto on Sunday, before heading out for a four-game east coast road trip.

                      Hottest under bet

Chicago Bulls – This week: 3-1 under, Season: 6-13 O/U

The Bulls offense continues to struggle without Derrick Rose. To make matters worse, Chicago may be without Kirk Hinrich for a few games. The guard injured his left elbow during Saturday’s win over the Knicks and is considered day-to-day. The Bulls have a tough slate of games this week with dates against the Clippers, Sixers and Nets.

                      Scouting the schedule

-The Miami Heat play the third game of a six-game homestand Monday when they welcome the Hawks. Miami is 9-1 SU and 5-5 ATS at home this season.

-The Denver Nuggets have a jam-packed schedule this week. The Nuggets will play five games in seven nights, including four road contests at New York, Detroit, Minnesota and Sacramento. Denver is a respectable 7-7 ATS away from home this season.

NBA game of the day: Jazz at Lakers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 206)

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to struggle and the Utah Jazz are coming off their largest victory margin of the season entering Sunday’s game. Host Los Angeles is two games under. 500 after losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday and has yet to find a comfort zone under new coach Mike D’Antoni. Utah rolled to a 131-99 win over the Toronto Raptors, putting together a dominating effort despite center Al Jefferson being sidelined with back spasms.

Kobe Bryant scored 35 points and Dwight Howard had 23 points and 18 rebounds in the loss to Oklahoma City. Howard said afterward that people need to be more patient. “It’s 82 games. This team has just gotten together,” said Howard in reference to how long a season lasts. “It’s not like we’re going to get together and start winning right away. … We’re learning how to play together. We’re getting better. This is not on anybody’s timetable but ours.” The Jazz defeated the Lakers 95-86 on Nov. 7 in what proved to be Mike Brown’s final game as Los Angeles coach.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (11-10): Jefferson is a game-time decision due to the injury he suffered in Wednesday’s victory over the Orlando Magic. Second-year center Enes Kanter made his first career start in Jefferson’s place and was solid with 18 points and eight rebounds against Toronto. “He made me feel like if I do have a little injury, I can sit out and he’ll step up and play well for me,” Jefferson said. Kanter had nine points in 13 minutes against the Lakers in the earlier meeting. Eight different players scored in double figures against the Raptors. Forward Derrick Favors (arch) could miss his fifth consecutive game.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (9-11): Los Angeles has struggled to effectively operate as an offense with point guards Steve Nash (leg) and Steve Blake (abdominal injury) both out and has turned to Chris Duhon. There have been mixed results in Duhon’s three starts. He looked good with 10 assists and zero turnovers in a victory against New Orleans and then was a complete nonfactor against Oklahoma City with just three assists in 36 minutes. The nine-year veteran is with his fourth different team. He has averaged close to 34 minutes over the last five contests.

                        TRENDS:
