    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

NFL trends to consider with Week 14 upon us.......

-- Vikings covered four of last five games as a home underdog.

-- Green Bay covered 20 of last 29 as a divisional favorite.

-- Titans covered twice in their last eight away games.

-- Bengals are 15-4-1 vs spread in last 20 non-divisional games.

-- Jets covered eight of last 11 tries as a road favorite.

-- Arizona covered twice in last nine NFC West road games.

    *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.........

    13) Wow. It looks like kickoffs might get eliminated from football. Not kidding. I wouldn't mind terribly if teams just started new possessions on the 25 or 30, but there is a suggestion out there where the team that scored would basically have a 4th-and-15 from its own 35 and they could punt or go for a first down to keep the ball, which would be the onside kick option on the new rule. Supposedly it would reduce the amount of injuries.

    12) Of course, if the NFL was 100% committed to reducing injuries, these Thursday night games wouldn't be played every week. Football wasn't meant to be played on three days' rest.

    11) Michael Young vetoed a trade to the Phillies? Who would want to trade Michael Young in the first place?

    10) Phillies traded couple of pitchers to the Twins for CF Ben Revere, who stole 40 bases last year. One of the pitchers Philly traded to the Twins is Vance Worley, who is on my fantasy team; not fond of an NL pitcher going to the league that has the DH.

Another one of my pitchers, oft-injured Andrew Cashner, sliced a tendon in his thumb in a hunting-related accident. Terrific.

    9) If I'm Tennessee AD Dave Hart, I'm calling former Cal coach Jeff Tedford and offering him the job as Vols' football coach, then if he accepts, I'm going to breathe a huge sigh of relief that I just saved my job.

    8) Good news: Sean McDonough is recovering from brain surgery and will work two bowl games for ESPN, on December 29/January 2. We've long thought that McDonough is one of ESPN's most underrated voices. Glad to hear he's getting healthy again.

    7) Hot baseball rumor of the day: Zach Greinke's wife used to be a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, and would like him to pitch for the Rangers.

    6) If you're the Seattle Mariners and marijuana just got legalized in state of Washington, is signing Josh Hamilton a risk worth taking? He is fighting a daily battle against drug addiction. Its a fair question to ask.

    5) Olive Garden is an underrated restaurant. Excellent bread sticks.

    4) Knicks played Miami twice this year, beat them by 20 points both times; New York made 18-46 behind the arc. They're an exceptional shooting team, but you cannot leave Steve Novak alone. The man guarding him cannot help on defense, its just plain stupid.

    3) From what you read about the NHL work stoppage, this season is in serious trouble. When the players hired Donald Fehr to head the NHLPA, you knew things were going to be contentious. Same thing happened with Fehr and baseball. Players have a short window of their lives to try and make money; missing a season makes very little sense for them, but looks like thats where they're headed.

    2) Nash-Stoudemire-Johnson-Barbosa-Diaw-Marion are all still playing in the NBA; five years ago, they were playing in Phoenix, finishing up a run where the Suns won 62-54-61-55 games under Mike D'Antoni.

Why did Suns' ownership break this group up? Think they regret it now? Phoenix is 79-87 the last 2+ seasons.

    1) I never thought I'd see the day where the Chiefs/Raiders are the two worst teams in the NFL. We might be there right now.

Lakers at Thunder: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-7.5, 211)

Oklahoma City doesn’t have the NBA’s best record but the Thunder are certainly the hottest team in the league entering Friday’s home contest against the up-and-down Los Angeles Lakers. Oklahoma City is looking for its seventh consecutive victory and its record is tied for second-best in the league behind the Memphis Grizzlies. Los Angeles hasn’t discovered its groove under recently hired coach Mike D'Antoni and is just 2-5 on the road.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant became the fifth player in NBA history to reach 30,000 career points when he scored 29 points in Wednesday’s victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Los Angeles was expected to flourish with center Dwight Howard joining Bryant but has just one three-game winning streak all season. Oklahoma City notched a 117-111 road win over the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, shooting a season-high 60.6 percent while scoring 100 or more points for the 10th straight game. The Thunder are 9-2 at home entering the contest against the team they defeated in the second round of the playoffs last season.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Los Angeles), Fox Sports Oklahoma

ABOUT THE LAKERS (9-10, 8-11 ATS): Bryant is averaging 34 points over the last three games and is carrying the offense. Interestingly, he is averaging just 20.2 points in Los Angeles’ nine victories while averaging 33 points in 10 defeats. His 28.0 overall average is tops in the NBA and his career point total stands at 30,016, trailing Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain on the all-time list. “Whenever you hear those kinds of names, you think about the amount of players that have played this game,” said Bryant, “and then to be in that kind of company, it’s always extremely, extremely special.”

ABOUT THE THUNDER (15-4, 13-5-1 ATS):
The top offensive team in the league really was on a roll by going 21-of-30 from the field to start the game against the Nets. Oklahoma City averages a league-best 105.7 points and its 49.2 percent field-goal accuracy rate is second behind the Miami Heat. Kevin Durant had 32 points against the Nets and Russell Westbrook added 25. Durant has been engaging his teammates early in the games but still is the top gun in the final quarter. “I always want to be a go-to guy in the fourth,” said Durant, averaging 26.5 points. “That’s what I live for.”

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
              * Favorite is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
              * Lakers are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Oklahoma City.
              * Lakers are 2-6-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. The Lakers are 9-4 against the Thunder in regular-season games since the former Seattle SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City.

              2. The Thunder are averaging 112.2 points per game during their six-game winning streak.

              3. Lakers F Pau Gasol is expected to miss third straight contest due to tendinitis in both knees.

Inside the betting stats: Bowl season & NFL stretch run

Here’s a quick-read into some illuminating numbers heading into college bowl season and the stretch run of the NFL schedule.

                            Ups and Downs

The bowl team whose second half overall stats (from Game 7 out as opposed to the first six games of the season) improved the most was Rice, whose 78 net yards per game improvement tops the pack.

Nipping at the Owls’ beak were Wisconsin (+74), Northern Illinois (+73) and Virginia Tech (+60).

The bowl team whose overall team stats regressed the most from Game 7 out was Texas Tech, who slipped a whopping 141 net YPG during the 2nd half of the campaign.

Other teams going backward dramatically after the midway point include Oklahoma State (-117), Arizona State (-109) and Duke (-108).

                            Pushovers

Four bowl teams head into the postseason having been pushed all over the field to conclude the season.

We’re speaking primarily of teams who have lost the overall yardage stats in at least their last three games.

This year’s ‘leaking oil’ contingent includes: Central Florida and Ohio University in each of its last three games, Duke in its last four games, and, amazingly enough, Kansas State in its last five contests.

Incidentally, the Wildcats were out-statted in each of their final five games of the campaign last season when they went on to drop a 13-point decision to 9-point favorite Arkansas.

                            Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

In weighing this year’s bowl contestants on a performance scale in games against teams with a winning record at the time of the game this season, these were the best and worst teams from a straight up perspective: Kansas State (8-0), Notre Dame (8-0) and Northern Illinois (5-0).

On the opposite end of the SU ladder were: Purdue (0-5), Central Florida (0-4) and Minnesota (0-4).

When the money was on the line, the best spread beaters in games against winning opposition included: Kansas State (7-0-1), Utah State (5-0), Kent State (4-0-1) and Rice (4-0).

Teams still looking for their first paycheck in games against winning opponents this season are Minnesota (0-4) and East Carolina (0-2).

                            The Fab Five (NFL)

It’s arguable this is the best crop of rookie quarterbacks to hit the NFL since 1983 and, who knows, perhaps ever.

The astonishing quarterback class of 1983 saw six QB’s drafted in the first round, including Hall of Famers John Elway, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino.

This year’s group of fledglings, namely Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden and Russell Wilson, are currently 30-30 combined straight up and 35-22-1 ATS (against the spread).

The quintessential quintet has shined at home (20-8-1 ATS) and as underdogs (29-12-1 ATS). And as a result they’ve been murder as home dogs (15-3-1 ATS).

The Achilles heel has been in games in which they’ve been forced to lay points, going just 6-10-1 ATS as favorites.

                            Play accordingly.

                            Stat Of The Week

The New England Patriots are 20-0 SU (straight up) during the second-half of the season since 2010, with +51 net turnovers (57-6) in those games.
