Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Auburn hired Gus Malzahn away from Arkansas State, meaning ASU is going to have its fourth head coach in four years in 2013. Terrific.

-- Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema surprised lot of people, including his boss at Wisconsin, by bolting Madison for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

-- Think Dave Doeren, who just bolted Northern Illinois for NC State, but is a former Wisconsin assistant, would've liked to have known that the job in Madison was opening up? Am guessing he could've had it. Whoops.

-- NBA team in New Orleans, which used to play in Charlotte, is going to change its name from Hornets to Pelicans, freeing up the Charlotte Bobcats to become the Hornets. Got it?

-- You want to be a handicapper? Explain Washington beating the Heat. If you can, you're a lot smarter than I am.

-- For the $$$ I spend on DirecTV, they need to get the Pac-12 Network. Lot of latenight basketball. Get it done, people.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on bowl games.......

13) Biggest bowl spread, by far, is Oklahoma State -17 over Purdue in the Heart of Dallas Bowl; 9-3 Louisiana Tech would’ve fit in there nicely, instead of a team that already fired its coach. Next highest spread is the game in Hawai’i, Fresno State -11.5 over SMU.

12) Unless I’m missing something, the seven Big Dozen bowl teams are all underdogs in their bowl games. The ten SEC teams are all favored in theirs. Draw your own conclusions there.

Side note: Ohio State/Penn State being ineligible for bowl games played into this happening.

11) Pitt Panthers are headed to the Compass Bowl for third year in a row, meaning they sure as hell won’t need a compass to get back to Birmingham, which I’m sure is a fine city that loves football, but couldn’t they ship the Panthers somewhere else?

At least Pitt has had a different coach in all three Compass Bowls, or shouldn’t I mention that?

10) Highest bowl totals: Baylor-UCLA, 78 in usually high scoring Holiday Bowl, and Kansas State-Oregon, 77 in the Fiesta Bowl. Both games should be bigtime fun.

9) Lowest totals: Rutgers-Virginia Tech and TCU-Michigan State were both 41.5, last time I looked. Alabama-Notre Dame is 42.

Crimson Tide outscored its last two bowl opponents 70-7.

8) USC can’t be thrilled having to prepare for Georgia Tech’s option attack, but look on the bright side; Tech is 6-7, their defense is awful.

Plus, it’s the Trojans’ first bowl in three years, so any bowl is good and El Paso is supposed to be a fun place. This is another spot where Louisiana Tech would’ve been an upgrade as an opponent.

7) Mississippi State is 5-0 in bowls since 1999, and they were an underdog in three of those five games.

6) San Diego State/Vanderbilt are both playing home games in bowls. Not sure that’s good, well if you live in San Diego its good. I guess playing in front of your home fans is always good.

5) Kent State lost ’72 Tangerine Bowl 21-18 to Tampa; they haven’t been back to a bowl since, but they’re in the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile, so good for them. Jack Lambert/Nick Saban were on that ’72 Kent team, by the way.

Kent lost its coach Tuesday night, when Purdue hired Darrell Hazell.

4) Iowa State beat Tulsa 38-23 in its season opener September 1. Why are these teams playing again in the Liberty Bowl? Why?

I’ll beat the dead horse; Louisiana Tech is a way more attractive team than the Cyclones, though Iowa State will bring fans to Memphis, and making money is all these bowls care about.

3) West Virginia of the Big 12 against Syracuse of the ACC in the Bronx on December 29. Somebody please buy Dana Holgorsen a hat, he’ll need it. Bad weather bowl for a passing team with a lousy defense. Is going to NYC for a bowl game an attractive trip? Its damn cold here in December.

2) Two bowls match up a pair of 6-6 teams; Compass Bowl and Armed Forces Bowl, but at least Air Force is in the Armed Forces Bowl. Not sure how Rice got to a bowl. I won't even mention the obvious here.....

1) UL-Monroe will be very excited about its first bowl ever, against Ohio in the Independence Bowl. Too bad Louisiana Tech-ULM don't get along- their matchup would’ve been one of the better bowls.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

Losing to a 37-year-old quarterback not named Brett Favre will put any team in the dog house with NFL bettors.

The Baltimore Ravens, licking their wounds after a 23-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and third-string QB Charlie Batch last Sunday, aren’t getting the treatment most 9-3 teams would this time of year.

Oddsmakers opened the Ravens as a pick for their trip to D.C. to play the red-hot Washington Redskins in Week 14. That line has since moved to Washington -1 following the Redskins' win over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Baltimore currently sits atop the AFC North, two games ahead of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, and ranks third overall in the conference, behind Houston and New England and ahead of Denver due to conference winning percentage. The Ravens, however, are the only squad among the top four AFC teams that has yet to clinch a playoff spot.

Baltimore walks a slippery slope in the final four weeks of the schedule. After facing the Redskins, the Ravens face the Broncos and Giants at home before traveling to the Bengals for what could be a division decider if Cincinnati continues its winning ways.

Add to that LB Terrell Suggs' torn biceps and the uncertain return of Ray Lewis, and Baltimore could be on the verge of an epic collapse.

This team is far from elite and Week 14’s spread proves it.

Here are other spreads making football bettors go “hmmm…” heading into the weekend:

NFL

Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks (-10.5, 34.5)

CenturyLink Field has been regarded as the toughest place to visit in the NFL for quite some time. Just take a look at the Seahawks' home numbers and you’ll see the home-field edge in Seattle is worth more than just the token two or three points.

The Seahawks are a perfect 5-0 SU and ATS at CenturyLink this season, but are oddsmakers going a bit overboard with Week 14’s spread? Some online books are dealing Seattle as large as -12 when it hosts the stumbling Arizona Cardinals, losers of eight straight, Sunday. The last time the Seahawks gave this many points was a Week 9 meeting with the Detroit Lions in 2009, winning 32-20 as 11-point home favorites.

Seattle's offense may not have the chops to cover the pile of chalk, averaging just over 20 points per game. And while Arizona isn't lighting up the scoreboard - at all - its defense still ranks among the best in the NFL and won't make it easy for the Seahawks attack. That big spread just doesn't match up when weighed against the 34.5-point total - tied for the second lowest number this season.

Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings (+2.5, 39)

The NFC North is arguably the toughest division in the NFL, which is evident by the spread between the Bears and Vikings this Sunday.

Oddsmakers are expecting another strong home showing from Minnesota, setting it as a slight home underdog hosting 8-4 Chicago. The Vikings have cooled from their hot start, going just 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five outings to fall to 6-6 on the year.

These two rivals met just two short weeks ago, with the Bears taking a 28-10 victory as 6.5-point favorites at Soldier Field. Since then, Chicago faltered versus Seattle at home last weekend, losing 23-17 in overtime.

NCAAF

Navy Midshipmen vs. Army Black Knights (+7, 56.5)

Is this the year Army finally beats Navy? Early action on this classic year-end matchup at least seems to think the Black Knights have a shot at covering the spread, moving the opening number from +9 to a touchdown as of Tuesday morning.

Navy has dominated this matchup in recent years, winning 10 straight contests with Army and going 7-3 ATS in that span. Army has, however, come away with the cover in two of the past three seasons, including a 27-21 loss as a 7-point underdog last year.

Interesting enough, the total for this one climbed as high as 57 points before settling back down at its opener. The under has been the best bet when Army meets Navy, with the teams playing below the number in six straight meetings.

Letdown spot

Kansas City Chiefs at Cleveland Browns (-5.5, 37.5)

The Chiefs went through more emotions than any team should ever have to this past weekend, following the murder-suicide committed by LB Jovan Belcher Saturday. Kansas City then bravely stepped onto the field and beat Carolina for just its second win of the season 24 hours later.

The Chiefs take their heavy hearts to Cleveland in Week 14 but while they leave the media blitz behind them, the chilling details surrounding the incident are inescapable. No one will blame Kansas City if it just doesn’t feel like playing football this weekend.

Look-ahead spot

New York at Charlotte Bobcats

The Knicks take a major step up in competition Thursday night, facing the defending champion Miami Heat just a night removed from playing the lowly Charlotte Bobcats – two teams separated by 39 wins last season. New York travels to Charlotte Wednesday on a three-game winning streak, going 2-1 ATS in that span.

The Knicks have been one of the better NBA bets this season, owning an 11-5 ATS mark to start the year. However, a good chunk of those paydays have come at home (6-1 ATS). The game versus the Bobcats kicks off a three-stop road trip which ends in Chicago Saturday. Charlotte, for all its issues, has already equaled last year’s win total and split against the spread versus N.Y. last season.

Schedule spot

Long Beach State better have packed the winter coats and mitts for its upcoming road swing. The 49ers played at home in sunny California Monday, then travel to Upstate New York to take on the No. 4 Syracuse Orange Thursday, before hustling off to Columbus to face the No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday. Long Beach State was hoping to head out on a high note but lost 64-59 to Fresno State at home Monday night, despite topping the Bulldogs 69-61 in the Save Mart Center on Nov. 25.

By the time the 49ers return from Ohio, they will have played just one home tilt in the past six outings. Looking even further down the road, LBSU hosts Div. II BYU-Hawaii on Dec. 15 then heads to Pauley Pavilion to visit UCLA on Dec. 19. Long Beach State has played three teams from major conferences already this season, losing SU and ATS to USC, North Carolina and Arizona.

Archrivals come together in Tallahassee as No. 5 Florida pays a visit to Florida State. The Gators are 6-0 for the ninth time in program history and the fourth time under head coach Billy Donovan, excelling with a stifling team defense that has limited opponents to an SEC-leading 48.5 points per game. Only Stephen F. Austin's defense (44.2) has been more suffocating among Division I schools. The Seminoles rebounded from the disappointment of a season-opening loss to South Alabama with four straight wins but have taken consecutive steps back of late, falling to Minnesota and Mercer at home in their last two games.

ABOUT FLORIDA (6-0, 3-1 ATS): The Gators ran all over Marquette at home last time out, dropping the Golden Eagles 82-49 in Florida's second-highest offensive output of the season.
