Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........
13) Dwight Howard is a big enough star that he got his coach fired last year, a coach who had won 61% of his games; too bad Howard can’t make 61% of his foul shots. He was 9-21 from line Sunday, as Howard’s old team, the Orlando Magic, beat the Lakers, Howard’s new team, as 13-point underdog.

Since the start of last season, Howard is 359-738 (48.2%) from charity stripe. That’s 359 made, 379 missed. What does he do all summer? He should at least try shooting them underhanded. It couldn't hurt.

12) Last time the Lakers were 8-9 was eight years ago; they finished 45-37, lost in first round of the playoffs. I’m just sayin’……

11) Northern Illinois, as a BCS bowl team, has to buy 17,500 tickets for the Orange Bowl, which doesn’t sound like much, until you realize their average HOME attendance this year was 15,670.

Unless they have a big alumni base in Florida, someone’s going to be buying tickets and giving most of them to school kids in Miami. Its part of the sham of the BCS system; they’re guaranteed money, whether there is interest in the game or not.

10) Didn’t know that Cris Collinsworth’s father played basketball for Adolph Rupp at Kentucky; was on a national championship team, too.

9) Eagles fired their DC earlier this year, now they’ve fired respected DL coach Jim Washburn, who could wind up in St Louis with his old boss Jeff Fisher. Washburn was upset the Eagles cut Jason Babin, and I guess he said so, and was shown the door.

8) Supposedly, the Pope is joining Twitter this week; not a joke, the real Pope over in Rome. Not sure if he’s going to tell jokes, post funny pictures of church stuff or explain why he wears that oddly-shaped hat, but it can’t be bad for us to follow the Pope, can it?

7) If I’m the Cardinals (that’s Arizona, not the ones who hang out with the Pope in Rome), I call the Jets, see what they’ll take for Marc Sanchez; a new start would be good for him, and he’s a lot better than anyone the Redbirds currently have under center.

6) Surprising stat: in their last four games, this is what the Cowboys scored, just in the second half: 28-23-28-28 points. That’s a lot of production!!!

5) If I’m a Tennessee titan fan and rooting for Jake Locker to be my QB of the future, I’m deeply concerned with this stat: in their last three games, Titans are 53-107 (49.5%) passing. Right now, Locker simply isn’t an accurate enough passer to excel at the NFL level.

4) In first half of their last four games, Raiders were outscored 82-20.

3) Rose Bowl used to be such a big deal, but now Wisconsin is in with an 8-5 record. 8-5 teams belong in the Holiday Bowl or the Idaho Potato Bowl. Worst thing is that there are no bowl games played opposite the Rose Bowl, so we’re stuck watching the Badgers lose to Stanford, until the next bowl comes on later that night.

2) Jets took a knee on the Arizona 1-yard line Sunday with a 7-6 lead, to prevent Arizona from getting the ball back with a chance to tie while trailing 14-6; smart football move, but when gambling on the NFL becomes legal in a couple years, moves like that are going to cause a ruckus.

1) Indianapolis Colts are no fluke; 16 of their last 18 TD drives have been 74+ yards; they have only three return TD’s all year. Last time they started a drive in enemy territory? Week 4. This offense is very good, and they haven’t gotten a great deal of help from defense/special teams. Makes you wonder why the Steelers canned Bruce Arians.

He could be NFL Coach of the Year, as an interim coach.

Hot Team: Binghamton Senators

Robin Lehner built on a strong October with an even stronger November, posting a 5-0-0-1 record with a 1.48 goals-against average and .958 save percentage. His consistency has helped the Senators to a winning streak that reached eight games when they defeated division-leading Syracuse 5-2 on Sunday.

Stephane Da Costa, playing in his sixth game of the season, led the way with four points against Syracuse, including a hat trick. Rookie Shane Prince had three assists, giving him six points in 10 games.

Binghamton trails the Crunch by two points with two games in hand in the East Division. The Senators host Portland and Norfolk this weekend with a chance to run their streak to 10 games.

Cold Team: Bridgeport Sound Tigers

Bridgeport is winless in five and trail Springfield by seven points in the Northeast Division after going 10-4-0-0 to start the season. As a team that relies on physicality, the Sound Tigers are tied for the league lead in penalty minutes, but that style necessitates good penalty killing, which is something Bridgeport hasn’t had recently.

The Sound Tigers have allowed eight goals on 37 opportunities during their slump, a penalty-killing rate under 80%. They were shorthanded at least seven times in four of the six games.

Nino Niederreiter (20 points) and rookies Brock Nelson (16 points) and Johan Sundstrom (12 points) continue to produce on offense, but without a reliable penalty kill, their contributions aren’t enough to turn Bridgeport around.

Giant Killers: Hamilton Bulldogs

The Bulldogs may be mired in an injury-riddled lost season, sitting at the bottom of the North Division and 3-7-0-0 in their last 10, but on Saturday night, they did something no other team has done this season: they beat the Abbotsford Heat at home in regulation.

The Heat looked comfortable extending their home record to 9-0-1-1 with a 5-1 victory over Hamilton on Friday night, but Cedrick Desjardins made 24 saves on Saturday as the Bulldogs shut down an Abbotsford’s potent offense and earned a 3-0 win.

The Heat should regain their winning ways with a doubleheader against San Antonio this week, while Hamilton continues its road trip with games against Syracuse and Hershey this weekend.

Surveying the schedule:

- The Charlotte Checkers host Lake Erie twice on Thursday and Friday before Milwaukee comes to town on Sunday. The Checkers have lost four in a row and are in danger of losing the South Division lead to the Oklahoma City Barons or the surging Houston Aeros.

- The Rockford IceHogs host Milwaukee on Friday and Chicago on Saturday before travelling to Grand Rapids on Sunday. It’s a week of games against opponents who all have their eye on Rockford’s tenuous Midwest Division lead.

How to cap the four playoff-bound NFL teams down the stretch

Four NFL teams punched their tickets to the postseason in Week 13, but home-field advantage is still up for grabs in both conferences.

The playoff-bound teams have covered at an alarming rate this season, going a combined 28-19-1 (60%) against the spread. With the pressure now off, handicapping these teams could be tricky down the stretch. Luckily, the Covers Experts are here to guide you through how to evaluate each team in the final month of the season.

New England Patriots (9-3 SU, 7-5 ATS)

Remaining schedule: vs. Houston, vs. San Francisco, at Jacksonville, vs. Miami

The Patriots clinched the AFC East with a 23-16 victory over Miami Sunday. New England’s high-powered offense has its over bettors (9-3 O/U) laughing all the way to the bank but it faces two tough defenses in the next couple weeks. Was putting only 23 points on the board at Miami a sign of the red-hot offense cooling off?

“The offense is just fine,” says Covers Expert Matt Fargo. “After putting up a record 108 points in two straight games, you knew it was bound to happen and Miami does have a pretty solid defense. Even with the low-scoring game against the Dolphins, the total against Houston opened at 53 and while it has been bet down to 51.5, it seems like a huge number to me. The Patriots offense is capable of putting up some big numbers against a banged up Houston defense.”

Houston Texans (11-1 SU, 8-4 ATS)

Remaining schedule: at New England, vs. Indianapolis, vs. Minnesota, at Indianapolis

The Texans picked up their sixth straight win and clinched a playoff spot with a 24-10 win over Tennessee Sunday. With a two-game lead over the other AFC division leaders, Houston could have the conference locked up in the very near future.

“The Texans may start pulling back,” cautions Doc of Doc’s Sports. “That should help the Colts get into the playoffs since they still have two games remaining against each other.”

Denver Broncos (9-3 SU, 6-6 ATS)

Remaining schedule: at Oakland, at Baltimore, vs. Cleveland, vs. Kansas City

The Broncos clinched the AFC West with a 31-23 victory over the Bucs on Sunday and are riding a seven-game winning streak into Oakland this week.

"It looks like Denver will have a tough time getting the No. 1 seed as they are two behind Houston and lost the head-to-head,” notes Covers Expert Steve Merril. “If the Texans win at New England, they will pretty much have home field nailed down.”

Aside from a Week 15 visit to Baltimore, Denver has the easiest schedule of the four teams down the stretch.

Atlanta Falcons (11-1 SU, 7-4-1 ATS)

Remaining schedule: at Carolina, vs. New York Giants, at Detroit, vs. Tampa Bay

The Falcons clinched the NFC South when Tampa Bay lost to Denver. Atlanta took care of business, sinking the Saints last Thursday, and is the lone NFC team to be officially playoff bound. The Falcons are also close to nailing down the top seed in the conference.

“Even though they may be overvalued in some spots, they are not unbettable as there is plenty of motivation still left for seeding in the playoffs so they need to be looked at on a game-by-game basis,” says Fargo. “With a lot to play for, similar to teams that are still trying to make the playoffs, Atlanta cannot be treated any differently but they may be treated differently by the betting public.”

Covers Expert Teddy Covers offers one final thought for bettors moving forward.

"I'd be much more inclined to bet against a team like Chicago, Seattle or Indy when (if) they clinch playoff spots -- teams that weren't there last year, and don't necessarily have that same mature perspective as these four teams."

The Brooklyn Nets had a chance to make a statement in Saturday's game at Miami, but they wilted in the second half in falling by 13 points to the reigning NBA champions. The Nets get another chance at a statement game when they host Kevin Durant and the red-hot Oklahoma Thunder on Tuesday. Brooklyn is 7-1 at the Barclays Center and has won six straight on its home court since blowing a 22-point lead against Minnesota in its second game of the season.

Oklahoma City has ripped off five consecutive victories and is coming off a rout at New Orleans in which it led by 27 points after three quarters. The league's highest-scoring team, the Thunder have won their last four by an average of 25 points. Durant is shooting 61.8 percent from the floor in that span as he bids for a fourth consecutive league scoring title. Oklahoma City has won the past six meetings with the Nets.

The 6-10 Perkins underwent surgery on his groin and wrist in July and had been questionable to be ready for the start of the season.
