Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

    13) Six Big East teams have already bolted for greener pa$ture$; UConn-Cincinnati-South Florida are jockeying to get the remaining two spots that the ACC seems destined to open up.

Its very possible that the football end of the Big East could be defunct by July, with the non-football Big East teams forming a new basketball league. This is all a high stakes game of musical chairs where no one knows when the music will stop, or if it ever will.

    12) Despite 18 consecutive winning football seasons, Southern Mississippi was always on the outside looking in on conference realignment. Now, after Ellis Johnson’s first season as coach ended at 0-12, ending their streak of winning seasons, USM showed him the door. No matter what league you’re in, 0-12 still gets you fired, and it always will.

    11) With five weeks to go in the regular season, 95 of 176 NFL games (54%) have been decided by 8 or less points, the highest percentage ever at this point of the season.

    10) Tennessee Titans fired OC Chris Palmer with five games left in the season, a definite red flag, especially when you’re playing a QB with almost no experience. Palmer didn’t seem too sad about losing his job, saying the Titans can hire/fire who they want, but firing him didn’t fix any of the problems. Developing a young QB usually takes time, but 86-year old owners don’t tend to look at the big picture. Impatience breeds mistakes.

    9) ACC pulled a tremendous coup getting Louisville to replace departed Maryland. Cardinals are better than Maryland in both in both football/ basketball; only thing you lose with Terrapins leaving is tradition, since Maryland was an ACC charter member. No one care$ about that anymore.

    8) Speaking of the Cardinals, Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater is a tough human; he played the second half against UConn last week with a broken left (non-throwing) wrist. He’s very good in addition to being very tough.

    7) Conference USA replaced East Carolina/Tulane with Middle Tennessee. Its hard to imagine anyone will miss having Tulane in their league, other than the easy wins and the trips to Bourbon Street.

    6) Tonight’s Big East football game on ESPN between Louisville of the ACC and Rutgers of the Big 14 is sold out, the first Rutgers home sellout in three years.

    5) I understand that Notre Dame is 12-0 and deserves to play for a national title, but if I’m voting for Coach of the Year, I’m adamant that 10-1 at Kansas State is better than 12-0 almost anywhere else. The job Bill Snyder has done in the Little Apple is truly amazing.

    4) Denver Pioneers played in the Sun Belt last year, the WAC this year and will be in the Summit League starting next year.

I’m wondering if they tried to get into the Mountain West as a basketball-only member? Seems like a better fit than the obscure Summit League.

    3) CBS showed A Charlie Brown Christmas last night, couple of nights after the Grinch was on. These are classic shows that should be on closer to Christmas; late November? Not good.

    2) As it stands right now, a San Diego State-SMU football game next season will be a Big East conference game. Get a map. SMU is in Dallas. San Diego State is in, well, San Diego. How does this make any sense?

    1) Big East basketball tournament is a staple of March; lot of great games over the years. Big East final has 8:00 Saturday spot during Championship Week. In 2014, you could get a Tulane-Central Florida championship game; in the Big East, not Conference USA. Want to see how ESPN sells that one, or any of this stuff.

See spot, bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that has proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Here’s a look at some possible spot bet opportunities this week:

      Letdown spot

The Michigan Wolverines took care of business in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Tuesday, knocking off No. 18 North Carolina State 79-72 as 5.5-point home favorites. That marquee win will be remembered on Selection Sunday and it comes on the heels of a championship run at the NIT Season Tip-Off last week. Michigan topped three potential NCAA-tourney quality opponents in Kansas State, Pitt and Cleveland State.

The Wolverines, however, take a step down in competition when they visit Bradley Saturday. The Bears are projected to finish last in the Missouri Valley but have opened the season with a strong record against the spread, going 3-1 ATS with a 4-1 SU mark. Two of those three covers came as double-figure favorites at home.

      Look-ahead spot

Spot bets are harder to find in the pro ranks but even some of the best teams, like the New England Patriots, are susceptible to the classic look-ahead spot. The Patriots visit the Miami Dolphins in Week 13, a nice getaway from the cold November temperatures of Foxborough. Oddsmakers have New England set as a big 9-point favorite after combining for 108 points in its last two outings.

With such a lopsided game expected, the sun-soaked Pats could be looking past the Dolphins and to next week’s AFC showdown with the Houston Texans. The Patriots were in a similar situation last season, taking on Washington in Week 14 before an important conference date with Denver the following Sunday. They squeaked out a 34-27 win over the Redskins, failing to cover as a 7.5-point road chalk.

      Schedule spot

A favorite spot bet of handicappers is playing against a team coming home for a brief one-game stay before heading back out on the road. The Dallas Mavericks are in Chicago Wednesday then return home to play the Detroit Pistons Saturday before leaving for three more away games.

The logic behind the play is that players are more focused on settling their home life (wife, girlfriend, kids, bills, business) than basketball in that short period before leaving again.

NBA bettors get a second look at this spot when the Mavs return to Dallas on Dec. 10 to play Sacramento before another three-game trip. They play just twice at home over the next nine games. Dallas is 5-3 SU but just 3-5 ATS at home this season.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Rested Heat host Spurs, Nuggets visit red-hot Warriors
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Miami Heat (-6, 203.5)

The San Antonio Spurs have built up the best road record in the NBA at 9-1. The Miami Heat have yet to lose at home. Something has to give when the Heat host the Spurs on Thursday. San Antonio has won the first five of its six-game road trip and was able to give stars Tim Duncan and Tony Parker plenty of rest in a blowout of the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. Miami has been waiting around since Saturday.

The Heat have won four straight overall and are leading the NBA in scoring at 104.8 points. LeBron James has been fantastic, but Miami has also benefited from the addition of Ray Allen, who has scored 17 points in each of the last two games and is averaging 12.8 off the bench. The Spurs have their own dynamic scoring threat off the bench in Manu Ginobili and are only slightly behind Miami in scoring at 102.6 points.

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE SPURS (13-3, 10-5-1 ATS): San Antonio did not have any player log more than 32 minutes in Wednesday’s 110-89 victory at Orlando and needed Duncan for only 27. The former MVP has gotten off to his best start in years and is contributing on both ends. He had five blocks to go along with 15 points against the Magic. The Spurs have been able to put up big point totals thanks to Parker’s penetration and a host of 3-point shooters. Ginobili went 6-of-9 from beyond the arc on Wednesday and Danny Green, Gary Neal and Matt Bonner are all capable of getting hot from 3-point range.

ABOUT THE HEAT (10-3, 6-7 ATS): Miami can shoot 3-pointers too, with Allen and Mario Chalmers streaking out on the wings, but is also able to play just about any style thanks to James. The reigning MVP continues to round out his game as both a scorer and a distributor. He scored 30 points and the Heat exploded in the last two minutes to avoid a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. Dwyane Wade, who has been battling a foot injury, will benefit the most from the four-day break Miami has had between games. Wade has played in the last two games but struggled to 6-of-15 shooting and committed four turnovers against the Cavaliers.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 10-2 in the last 12 meetings in Miami.
        * Favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
        * Under is 19-4 in the last 23 meetings.
        * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. Miami F Shane Battier (knee) is doubtful for Thursday after missing practice this week.

        2. The Heat have taken two straight in the series, including a 120-98 home win in the lone meeting last season. James scored 33 in that matchup.

        3. The Spurs have done the bulk of their damage on the road trip without F Kawhi Leonard (knee) and G-F Stephen Jackson (finger). Both will be out on Thursday.

Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors (+1.5, 200)

The Golden State Warriors have surged into contention at the top of the Pacific Division thanks to five wins in seven games and some rapid improvement from their young players. One opponent the Warriors have not been able to solve has been the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets have taken two meetings from Golden State already this season, including a 107-101 overtime setback at ORACLE Arena on Nov. 10.

Denver had its four-game winning streak snapped at Utah on Monday - the beginning of a stretch of eight of nine on the road. The Nuggets had built that winning streak on defense, holding the four opponents to an average of 90.3 points - including a 102-91 win over the Warriors on Friday. Golden State struggled to contain Ty Lawson and Andre Iguodala in that contest but bounced back the following night as rookie Harrison Barnes and second-year swingman Klay Thompson stepped up against Minnesota.

        TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (8-7, 10-5 ATS): After a 4-6 start that had Denver struggling to put things together on both ends of the floor during the same game, the Nuggets seemed to gel during the four-game winning streak. They went over 100 points three times during the run while also holding each of the four opponents under the century mark. Denver could not keep that up on Monday, when it suffered a 105-103 loss at Utah. Iguodala drew a pair of technical fouls and was ejected in the third quarter and the Nuggets struggled to contain the Jazz on the interior.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (8-6, 8-5-1 ATS): Golden State does not have the pieces to exploit Denver’s deficiency on the interior due to Andrew Bogut’s slow recovery from an ankle injury. But the Warriors are becoming one of the stronger perimeter teams with Barnes and Thompson joining Stephen Curry as reliable scoring threats. Barnes struggled through the worst game of his rookie campaign at Denver on Friday, recording a season-low four points on 1-of-5 shooting while struggling with foul trouble against Iguodala and company. Barnes bounced back against the Timberwolves, recording his third double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
        * Nuggets are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Golden State.
        * Nuggets are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings.
        * Over is 15-5 in the last 20 meetings in Golden State.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. Denver has won in four of its last six trips to ORACLE Arena. Danilo Gallinari and Kenneth Faried each recorded a double-double in the Nov. 10 win.

        2. Curry was held to six points in the last game against Denver.

        3. Gallinari has recorded 20 or more field goal attempts in only two games this season - both against the Warriors. He shot a combined 16-for-42 (38 percent) in those two games.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Kentucky at Notre Dame
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  KENTUCKY at NOTRE DAME

Kentucky has had a chance to fix several of the things that went wrong in its loss to Duke earlier this month, starting with an offense that struggled to push the pace. The eighth-ranked Wildcats have averaged 95.3 points in three straight wins since that loss to the Blue Devils, and have gone over the century mark twice. They will test that explosive offense against a higher caliber of competition when they visit Notre Dame on Thursday.

Unlike freshman-dominated Kentucky, the Fighting Irish rely heavily on upperclassmen and returned all five starters from a team that won 22 games last season. That experience and familiarity has helped Notre Dame execute in the half court and on the defensive end en route to four straight wins. The Wildcats will try to get out and run, using their superior athleticism to make up the difference in experience. Their big challenge will be stopping Irish forward Jack Cooley, who is averaging a double-double while shooting over 60 percent from the field.

                  TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

LINE: The early overnight line has Kentucky as a 1-point road favorite and the total was recommended at 135.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (4-1): The SEC/Big East Challenge will provide the Wildcats with a better approximation of their growth than wins over Louisiana-Lafayette, Morehead State and Long Island University-Brooklyn. Kentucky rebuilt over the summer with a strong recruiting class and has watched those players come together over the last three games. Guard Archie Goodwin came within one rebound and one assist of a triple-double in the 104-75 win over LIU-Brooklyn on Friday while Alex Poythress has gone for 20 or more in four straight games. Nerlens Noel continues to fill up the box score in much the same way that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist did for last season’s national championship squad.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (6-1): The Irish suffered an overtime loss to St. Joe’s during the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic earlier this month but have recovered nicely, especially on the defensive end. Notre Dame is allowing just 58.3 points during its four-game winning streak. Six players scored in double figures in Monday’s 92-65 win over Chicago State, led by Jerian Grant’s 22 points and 10 assists. The Irish are so balanced offensively that Cooley only had four field goal attempts (making all four) in the win. That efficiency is made possible by the backcourt duo of Grant and Eric Atkins, who have a combined assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.08.

                  TIP-INS

                  1. Kentucky G Ryan Harrow (illness) has not played since the opener but returned to practice this week.

                  2. The Wildcats beat Notre Dame 72-58 in Louisville in the last meeting on Dec. 8, 2010.

                  3. The Fighting Irish are averaging 19 assists as a team.
