    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting games on next weekend's schedule......

-- UCLA @ Stanford-- Cardinal just drilled UCLA in Pasadena.

-- Northern Illinois-Kent State-- Underrated MAC title game.

-- Georgia-Alabama-- Winner plays for a national title.

-- Saints @ Falcons-- Mike Smith has trouble with New Orleans.

-- Buccaneers @ Broncos-- Oddly enough, this is the best game of week.

-- Giants @ Redskins-- First meeting had a dramatic ending.

    *********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

    13) If your favorite NFL team is 5-6, all isn’t lost; in seven of last eight years, a team that 5-6 at this point of the season wound up making the playoffs. First time Rams made the Super Bowl, in 1979, they were 5-6, so it can happen. Not likely, but still possible.

    12) Falcons have led at halftime in only one of their last seven games; they haven’t covered spread in four of 10 wins (0-3-1). Eagles didn’t cover any of their three wins, Ravens failed to cover five of their nine; other 29 teams are covering 84.2% of their wins.

    11) If either Louisville or UConn leave the Big East before July, the league could just dissolve and go away, making way for a new, basketball-only league with the seven non-football Big East schools, plus other teams like Butler/Saint Louis/VCU/Xavier. Conference juggling never seems to stop.

    10) USC basketball coach Kevin O’Neill let a TV camera inside his locker room at halftime of their game Sunday night; as luck would have it, Trojans were down 12, so his halftime talk was…..passionate.

He told the kids they were going to win, which they didn’t, but at one point they did storm back to take the lead. USC has a lot of talent, but lot of transfers, so not lot of chemistry; how quickly they gel could determine if O’Neill keeps his job next year.

    9) University of North Dakota is now in the Big Sky Conference; problem is, they’re 800 miles from their closest conference rival. Can’t even imagine what living out there must be like in the winter.

    8) Speaking of which, not sure if I ever knew that Alaska is twice as large as Texas, and is actually 20% as big as the contiguous 48 states. Not lot of people there, but lot of frozen spaces.

    7) I feel bad for NHL fans, who love the sport and have to watch it wither away during another labor impasse. Not sure how the owners think this is good for their business; lot of people blame the Commissioner, but doesn’t he just do the owners’ bidding for them?

    6) Speaking of the NHL, former St Louis Blues coach Jacques Demers is now an elected official, a Senator in Canada; there are debates going on in Canada about whether to legalize sports betting north of the border. For purely selfish reasons, I hope they do.

    5) Something to think about when the minor bowls start; Conference USA teams are 7-35 SU this season in non-conference games vs other I-A teams, 1-23 vs teams from BCS leagues.

    4) San Francisco Giants’ World Series shares are $377,002, not much less than the minimum salary for big leaguers. Posey/Bumgarner combined to make $1,175,000 this season, so thats significant money for them.

    3) Tampa Bay Rays signed Evan Longoria to a 10-year contract extension; two thoughts:
    a) I wonder where the Rays will call home by time that contract ends and
    b) It would be nice if Longoria’s hamstrings stayed in one piece so he could earn the $100M he’s going to make; he had a procedure on his injured hamstring earlier this month.

Interesting note: Longoria does not have a no-trade clause.

    2) Kansas City Chiefs are 0-6 at home for the first time since 1976.

    1) San Diego Chargers had 10 takeaways in two wins against the Chiefs this year; they’ve had nine takeaways in other nine games (2-7) combined.

Pucking the trends: AHL betting news and notes

No NHL. No problem. Check out the latest betting news and notes from the young guns in the AHL.

      Hot Team: Oklahoma City Barons

The addition of Taylor Hall to the Barons’ stable of Oilers prospects, which already includes Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and AHL scoring leader Justin Schultz, has turned Oklahoma City into the most feared opponent in the league.

In the last seven games, Hall has 14 points and the Barons are 6-0-1-0, averaging over four goals per game. After two convincing road victories over Charlotte this on the weekend, Oklahoma City trails the division-leading Checkers by only two points.

The Barons remain on the road against divisional opponents Houston and San Antonio before closing out 2012 with seven of nine games at home. They could be a difficult team to catch in the standings by then.

      Cold Team: San Antonio Rampage

The Rampage hit the road this week, a welcome change after playing seven of their last eight games at home and going 0-6-0-2 in that span. The slump has knocked San Antonio to the bottom of the league with 11 points.

Scoring is a big concern for the Rampage, who are relying on rookies Drew Shore, Quinton Howden and John McFarland to carry the load. So far, only Shore seems comfortable in a scoring role, tied for the team lead with 14 points. Howden has seven points and McFarland has just three assists.

Jacob Markstrom, San Antonio’s star goaltender, is also struggling with the starting role he claimed last season. Markstrom has a goals-against average over 3.00, a save percentage under .900, and two wins in nine starts.

      Prospect Watch: Milwaukee Admirals

Milwaukee should receive a boost to its mediocre season now that Ryan Ellis is back in the lineup. Ellis was sidelined with a broken wrist suffered in the offseason and his return will allow the Admirals more flexibility on their defense, taking some pressure off Jonathon Blum.

With eight points and a minus-7 rating through 17 games, Blum has been overshadowed by teammates like 2009 fourth-round pick Mattias Ekholm. But Ellis’ return has helped Blum simplify his game, and he has a plus-3 rating from the last two games because of it.

Ellis will provide more offense from the blueline (he already has 12 shots in his first four games) and complement the scoring of fellow OHL alumnus Austin Watson, who is tied for the team lead with 13 points as a rookie.

      Surveying the schedule:

      - The Texas Stars have a busy week on the road, with a stop at Rockford on Tuesday before playing back-to-back games in Grand Rapids on Friday and Saturday and travelling to Peoria for Sunday. The Stars end their midwest road trip in Milwaukee next Wednesday.

      - The Syracuse Crunch conclude a five-game road swing this weekend with games against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (Friday), Connecticut (Saturday) and Binghamton (Sunday). With a 9-0-0-1 away record, the Crunch probably wish they could stay on the road forever.

            Armadillo's Write-Up

            Tuesday, November 27

-- Home teams won last four Detroit-Bowling Green games; Titans lost last two visits here, by 20-6 points. Detroit is 1-2, losing at St John's by 3, Miami by 15, both ranked in top 90. #208 BG is 0-3 vs D-I teams, but all three games were away from home. MAC single digit underdogs are 2-8 vs spread. Horizon road favorites are 4-8.
-- 6-1 Minnesota spent weekend in Bahamas, losing by 18 to Duke, but beating Memphis/Stanford to finish trip well; physical Gophers are #3 offensive rebounding team in country (get 47.3% of misses). Florida St. is 4-1, beating BYU/St Joe's on neutral floors after South Alabama upset them at home. Big Dozen teams are 8-5 if spread is less than 5 points.
-- Virginia Tech made 42.7% from arc in 5-0 start, but none of its victims are ranked higher than #217; Hokies are scoring 85.4 ppg. #58 Iowa split pair of games in Cancun last week, losing to Wichita State by 12. ACC home favorites are 11-5 vs spread. Big Dozen road underdogs are 3-6. Toughest test yet for Tech, which is playing faster with new coach.

North Carolina at Indiana: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

North Carolina Tar Heels at Indiana Hoosiers (-9.5)

Two of the nation’s premier programs will meet Tuesday night when top-ranked Indiana hosts No. 13 North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Hoosiers feature a deep, talented roster that includes five players averaging double figures in scoring and three who led the team in scoring in each of the last three seasons. Cody Zeller, a 7-foot sophomore forward, leads Indiana in scoring (15.2) after averaging a team-high 15.6 last season. The Tar Heels have three players averaging in double figures and they've already been stung by a team from Indiana, losing to Butler at last week’s Maui Invitational.

              TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (5-1): James Michael McAdoo has seen his minutes nearly double from last season and his scoring average nearly triple from 6.1 to 16.8 points, but his turnovers are also skyrocketing. The sophomore forward didn’t have more than three turnovers in any game last season, but he’s already had four or more in four of six games this season, including seven in the loss to Butler. The Tar Heels are also experiencing some growing pains with freshman point guard Marcus Paige, who has 20 assists and 19 turnovers while shooting 37.5 percent from the floor this season.

ABOUT INDIANA (6-0): With the emergence of Zeller the last two seasons, senior forward Christian Watford has seen his shot attempts gradually decline. Watford averaged a team-high 16 points two seasons back but fell to 12.6 last season and 13.2 so far this year. Watford, who's best remembered for hitting a buzzer-beating 3-pointer last season to knock off No. 1 Kentucky, is averaging 8.7 field-goal attempts, which would be a career low. He’s making his presence known in other areas, particularly rebounding, where he’s averaging a team-high eight a game.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 4-1 in Hoosiers’ last five overall.
              * Tar Heels are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
              * Hoosiers are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
              * Under is 4-0 in Tar Heels’ last four vs. Big Ten foes.

              TIP-INS:

              1. Zeller’s older brother, Tyler, starred at North Carolina the previous four seasons and now plays in the NBA for the Cavaliers. His other brother, Luke, plays for the Phoenix Suns.

              2. Indiana senior guard Jordan Hulls is eight 3-pointers away from moving into No. 2 all time on the Indiana career list.

              3. Indiana will be without freshmen Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Peter Jurkin. Both were suspended for the first nine games for accepting benefits from a former AAU coach. The players lost an appeal last week that would have shortened the suspension to five games and made them available against the Tar Heels.
