    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Some NFL trends to think about for this week's games........

-- Texans covered seven of last nine road games.

-- Cowboys are 5-18-1 in last 24 games as a favorite.

-- New England is 16-6-1 as an AFC East road favorite.

    -- Seahawks are 2-11-1 in last 14 post-bye games.

-- Broncos covered eight of last 11 on the road.

-- Rams covered four of last fourteen away games.

    *********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) Cal Bears stupidly fired football coach Jeff Tedford, who leaves the program in much better shape than he found it. If I knew Coach Tedford, I’d tell him that George Seifert won two Super Bowls in the NFL, 12-15 years after he was fired as head coach at Cornell.

Sometimes a bad day can actually be a good day in disguise.

    12) Dallas Cowboys had 30 first downs in their OT win Sunday, 10 of them via Cleveland penalties; I’d never seen that before, a team getting 10 first downs via penalty in one game. Am guessing the Browns’ coaches weren’t too happy, especially when you add in a close call on a fumble in OT led to the Dallas winning FG.

    11) John Gibbons went 305-305 as skipper of the Blue Jays from 2003-08, now he gets a second chance in Toronto, only this time with a much better team. I wonder if Ozzie Guillen applied for the job, seeing as he managed 20% of Toronto’s team this past summer with the Marlins.

    10) ESPN upgraded their college basketball studio crew by adding Bruce Pearl/Seth Greenberg; Pearl is a natural for TV, great talker. He’ll be back in coaching soon if he wants to be; the stuff that got him fired at Tennessee seems like child’s play with everything that’s gone on since then. Greenberg didn’t win enough, so he could be on TV for a while, but he’s good at it.

    9) If Mark Turgeon had stayed at Texas A&M, he’d be coaching basketball in the SEC, but he went to Maryland, to what he thought was an ACC job, but now he finds himself in the Big 14 (previously Big 10, Big Dozen). Wonder if he could do over again, if he would’ve stayed where he was?

    8) USC’s hoop team has 10 kids who started their college career either in JC or at another 4-year school. That’s an awful lot of transfers.

    7) The conspiracy theorist in me says the NASCAR post-race “brawl” two weeks ago was staged for TV, to try and create interest in the last race of the season. Then you say no, it can’t be, until you notice that TV ratings for the last race were down 27% from LY, then you realize it very well could’ve been an attempt to jumpstart ratings.

Going up against the NFL on Sundays is deadly; they’d be better off running the last race on a Friday or Saturday night, or even a Tuesday, since it’s the last race. Make it a spectacle, like the BCS title game.

    6) Air Force beat Hawai’I last Friday without throwing one pass; not sure I've seen that before. Seen teams not complete a pass, not sure I’d seen a team not even try one, and still win.

    5) Steelers were working out free agent QBs Brian Hoyer (Michigan State/ Patriots) and Mike Kafka (Northwestern/Eagles) since they’ll need a backup for Charlie Batch this weekend in Cleveland.

Might wind up signing/dressing both guys Sunday.

    4) I’m adamant that it hurts the NFL product not to have each team dress three QB’s for every game, just in case. Teams with two QBs dressed go into a shell as soon as the first guy gets hurt.

    3) When they set up this year's Maui Classic, ESPN probably envisioned a Texas-North Carolina final. Longhorns are playing in 7th place game, and Carolina will play Chaminade in the 3rd place game, as upsets have ruled the day in Maui this year. Butler beat the Tar Heels decisively Tuesday night.

    2) A lawyer in Toronto paid $5,300 for a toilet that was once in the home dressing room at old Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto; said hes going to put it in his home. Imagine what he would’ve paid for it if the Maple Leafs were ever any good?

    1) I carry a marble and a small compass with me at all times, because I never want to lose my direction, and when the world gets crazy, as it often does, I’m reminded to just roll with it. Corny, but true. You pay $5,300 for a toilet, you know sometimes its a crazy world.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

Each week we explore both NFL and NCAAF odds, dissecting those lines that make bettors go “hmmm…”. This week we asked our Covers Community on Twitter (@Covers) to tell us which odds have them scratching their heads this week.

      NFL

Houston Texans at Detroit Lions (+3, 50.5)

Houston didn’t look great in a classic letdown spot versus Jacksonville in Week 11. That poor showing should serve as a wake-up call for the Texans as they prepare to face the Lions on Thanksgiving Day.

Detroit, coming off back-to-back losses to divisional foes, is all but dead in the water when it comes to the playoffs. But somehow, books are only giving the Lions a field goal at home versus one of the best teams in the league looking for redemption.

Baltimore Ravens at San Diego Chargers (-1, 47)

The Chargers haven’t done anything all season to warrant being a 1-point favorite at home to Baltimore Sunday. San Diego has dropped back-to-back games and five of its last six, leaving the coaching staff on life support heading into Week 12.

Baltimore has won three in a row and should be a solid road fave in this contest, especially after Ed Reed won his suspension appeal on Tuesday. The Ravens have been efficient on offense this season and now it seems their defense is finally starting to show up, allowing only 45 total points over the past three contests.

      NCAAF

Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes (-3.5, 54.5)

These types of rivalry games demand a certain amount of give and take, but this spread has dropped from its opener of -5 to as low as OSU -3.5. That early move stinks of steam and you can expect heavy buyback on the Buckeyes if it goes to a field goal.

Ohio State, which many think is the top team in the nation, is banned from postseason play, leaving this showdown with “that team up north” as its bowl game. Head coach Urban Meyer is more than familiar with college football’s biggest rivalry, growing up in Ohio, and is even going after Michigan head coach Brady Hoke – a fellow Ohio native.

“He was born in the state of Ohio - which I still don't get,” Meyer told the Detroit Free Press of Hoke. “That's another story. But I guess it adds to the intensity.”

Even with Michigan QB Denard Robinson back under center, the spread seems too low against the 11-0 Buckeyes.

Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers (-13, 61)

This SEC toilet bowl features two teams that have canned their head coaches and would love to just have the season over with. Somehow, books are tagging the Vols as 13-point favorites in the wake of Derek Dooley’s termination following a 41-18 loss to rival Vanderbilt last weekend.

“Tennessee ain't gonna come close to covering against UK. They have quit, and should outright lose that one,” says Covers Twitter follower @JHB4UK.

Tennessee has come up short against the spread in three straight games and is just 3-8 ATS on the year. Kentucky announced that it was letting head coach Joker Phillips go at the end of the season, prompting the Wildcats players to rally behind Phillips in his final game.

“It would be huge. To send him out on a high note like that, it would be huge for us and the seniors as well,” linebacker Avery Williamson told reporters. “I feel like he deserves it. He gave his all even though we didn't get the results we wanted this year. I feel like him and his staff, they gave it all and put it all on the line for us to have a good season."

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Pittsburgh Panthers (-2, 43.5)

Rutgers, which announced it would be joining the Big Ten in 2014 this week, is in the hunt for a chunk of the Big East regular season title versus Pitt this weekend.

Books are dealing the motivated Scarlet Knights as 2-point road dogs at Heinz Field, facing a Panthers team coming off back-to-back losses, including a 24-17 stinker against UConn last week. Pitt has covered only twice in its last seven home games with Rutgers.

“I don't understand why Rutgers is an underdog at Pitt. Looks like easy $,” @Bix99 Tweeted @Covers.

The Scarlet Knights RB Jawan Jamison has been slowed by a sprained ankle but backup Savon Huggins was more than capable of towing the load, rushing for 179 yards versus Cincinnati last week. A possible look-ahead spot may have books playing it cool with Rutgers, which faces Louisville with a potential BCS bowl appearance on the line next week.

            Wednesday, November 21

-- Auburn split first four games, winning by 4 at Charleston in only true road game; Tigers are shooting 41% inside arc, 28% outside it. Boston College lost its last three games, allowing 80.7 ppg. ACC home favorites are 10-3 against the spread; SEC road underdogs are 4-6.
-- Princeton is 1-2, with three games decided by total of 11 points; they lost to Northeastern by point, to Rutgers by 6, and won at Buffalo by 4. Tigers are shooting just 29.2% from arc. Syracuse beat San Diego State by 13 on a windy ship; Big East home favorites are 8-9 vs spread.
-- Colorado State beat Denver last three years by 4-11-5 points; Rams are more inside-oriented under Eustachy, even with 4 starters back from LY's 20-12 team. Denver lost two of first three games, losing to Cal by 11 at home last game. MWC teams are 4-8-1 if spread is single digits.
-- San Diego is playing 4th game in seven days, but first true road game; they lost by 3-12 points to two teams they played ranked in top 200. UCSB won by 4 at San Diego LY; they're 0-2 vs D-I teams this season, losing badly to LSU/Illinois State. Big West single digit HFs are 4-2.

-- Utah is picked 11th in Pac-12, but home loss to Sacramento State is bad sign; Utes have five freshmen, three transfers, so if they are getting better, it'll take while to show. Idaho State lost first two games, by 8-3 points, scoring 48 points both games. Big Sky road dogs are 8-11.
-- Delaware won two of first three games, upsetting Virginia last game; Hens are expected to challenge Drexel at top of CAA, have all 5 starters back from 18-14 team. Kansas State won its first four games easily with new coach Weber. CAA single digit road dogs are 6-1 vs spread.
-- Pitt was 11-16 in last 27 games LY but started 4-0 this year, rallying to beat Oakland in OT last game, after being down 14 at half. Michigan won first three games, shooting 49% behind arc, but this is their first game in eight days. MSG is Big East country, more familiar to Pitt.
-- 71-year old Brown has SMU at 4-0 after being 13-19 LY; Mustangs' three D-I wins are by 15-3-3 points- they're thin because Brown ran off couple kids from LY. Rider lost by 12 at South Carolina Monday in first road game. MAAC road underdogs are 3-8 against the spread.
-- Home side won last three Wyoming-Northern Colorado games, with Cowboys losing by 14 in last visit here. Wyoming is 4-0 this year vs an amazing collection of stiffs. Bears lost by 11 at Cal Poly in only game vs D-I opponent. Big West teams are 6-3 if spread was 4 or less points.

-- Portland-Portland State didn't play LY, after Pilots won at State by 11 in last meeting, snapping 4-game series skid. Vikings won last two trips crosstown, winning by 4-6 points. State lost by 11 at Oregon in its only game vs D-I team. Portland scored 55.7 ppg in its 1-2 start.

All teams in Maui Classic are playing for third straight day........
-- Mississippi State is a trainwreck, losing last two days by 46-29; this is huge game for Texas team that lost in OT Tuesday, after Chaminade beat them Monday. State only played seven guys, four of whom were on court 32+ minutes. Texas PG Felix played 44:00 yesterday.
-- USC won in OT Tuesday; three guys played 34+ minutes, night after they got crushed by Illinois. Marquette lost at buzzer Monday, but had easy time yesterday vs Miss State. Big East teams are 6-8 vs spread if line is 5 or less points. Pac-12 teams are 8-2 if line is 5 or less points.
-- Illinois-Butler are both coached by former aides to Thad Matta, coach at Ohio State who used to be at Butler. Illinois crushed USC Monday, then had easy win vs host Chaminade last night, while Butler had great, somewhat easy win over North Carolina. Bulldogs beat Marquette first game; can they pull off Big East-ACC-Big Dozen trifecta?

Maui Invitational: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Texas Longhorns

Texas and Mississippi State will face off at the Maui Invitational on Wednesday in a matchup of winless teams through the first two games of the tournament. The Longhorns likely feel like they deserve better after getting upset by Division II school Chaminade in Monday’s opener, then blowing a late lead in regulation Tuesday and losing to USC in overtime. Mississippi State is probably wondering why it even bothered coming to Hawaii. Because of injuries and suspensions, the Bulldogs brought only eight players on the trip - two are walk-ons - and were subsequently beaten by 46 points by North Carolina in the opener and by 27 against Marquette the following day.

                TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT TEXAS (2-2): Finding a cause for the Longhorns’ failures this tournament are a little tough to pin down. They scored the game’s first eight points against Chaminade and then went on cruise control. By the time they got serious, it was too late. It would help if Texas took better care of the basketball. They have 32 turnovers through the first two games. The Longhorns have also allowed 22 offensive rebounds, an area they controlled in their first two victories this season.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (1-3): There have been a few bright spots for the Bulldogs during the trip. Roquez Johnson, a 6-7 sophomore guard, has established himself as a go-to offensive player. He scored 12 points against North Carolina and 16 more against Marquette, combining for 15 rebounds in those games. Fred Thomas, a freshman guard who wasn't cleared by the NCAA until August, scored a team-high 17 points against Marquette, making 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. USC Trojans

USC and Marquette bring a sense of comfort into their consolation game at the Maui Invitational on Wednesday. They both lost their openers Monday in surprisingly different ways, then came back with betters efforts Tuesday in their victories. The Trojans are still waiting for guards Jio Fontan and J.T. Terrell to get their shots untracked. Fontan, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, is shooting 8-for-33 on the season (24.2) percent. Terrell is only slightly better at 14-for-48 (29.1). Marquette has received some break-out play from junior guard Vander Blue, who has combined for 39 points in the first two games.

                TV: 5 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT USC (3-1): The player who should give the Golden Eagles the biggest trouble is 7-foot junior center Dewayne Dedmon, another player coming off a serious knee injury last season. He flashed his game-changing abilities in an overtime victory Tuesday against Texas. He blocked a shot in the final minute of regulation that resulted in a fast-break dunk by Terrell that tied the score and allowed the game to reach overtime. He then converted a three-point play late in the extra period to give his team the lead for good.

ABOUT MARQUETTE (3-1): The Golden Eagles have a player similar to Dedmon in 6-8 junior forward Davante Gardner. He has scored in double digits in every game this season, getting 15 points and 12 rebounds in the victory Tuesday against Mississippi State. Chris Otule, a 6-11 senior, has been slow to bounce back from a season-ending knee injury last season, but gives the Golden Eagles additional size to help match up with USC.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Chaminade Silveswords

Chaminade gets another chance to play giant-killer when the Silverswords meet No. 9 North Carolina in the third-place game at the Maui Invitational. Chaminade, a Division II program, opened the tournament with a surprising win against Texas, 30 years after stunning top-ranked Virginia on its home floor in Honolulu. The Tar Heels figure to be chapped after losing their semifinal against Butler, 82-71. They grabbed just one offensive rebound in the first half and didn’t get to the free-throw line until 13:13 remained in the game.

                TV: 7:30 p.m. ET. ESPN2.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (4-1): Getting off to a better start should be paramount for North Carolina. They fell behind by eight points four minutes into the game against Butler and scored just 18 points in the first half, their lowest first-half total since 1996. The nudge needs to come from their starting group, which didn’t have a player score more than 13 points against Butler or shoot better than 50 percent from the field. James Michael McAdoo, considered the best player for North Carolina, finished with an unimpressive 10 points and seven turnovers.

ABOUT CHAMINADE (2-2): The Silverswords could do no wrong in their opening-round upset against Texas, shooting 34-for-39 from the foul line, 10-for-30 from 3-point range and collecting 14 offensive rebounds against the taller Longhorns. As is the case following most upsets, Chaminade came crashing back to earth against Illinois, making just 6 of 12 from the free-throw line, committing 14 turnovers and getting heavily outrebounded by the guard-driven Fighting Illini. If the Silverswords are to win two games in this tournament for the first time in 29 years, they’ll need to be even better than they were against Texas.

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Butler Bulldogs

Two schools located just 120 miles apart will meet on an island 4,500 miles away when Butler plays Illinois on Wednesday night in the final of the Maui Invitational. Butler, hailing from Indianapolis, Ind., reached the championship game by knocking off No. 9 North Carolina in Tuesday’s semifinal, 82-71, a win that seemed much easier than its last-second victory the day before against Marquette. Illinois breezed through USC in the opening round and then took care of business against tournament host and Cinderella story Chaminade in the second round.

                TV: 10 p.m. ET. ESPN.

ABOUT ILLINOIS (4-0): The Fighting Illini continue to win with solid guard play. Brandon Paul is averaging 21.5 points, 3.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds after finishing in the top two in all three categories last season. Fellow senior D.J. Richardson is the team’s sharpshooter, connecting on 31.8 percent of his 3-pointers this season. They’ve been supported by sophomore Tracy Abrams, who has nearly quadrupled his scoring average from last season (4.3 to 15.3). Joseph Bertrand, the team’s fourth-leading scorer last season, made sure he wasn’t forgotten, scoring a team-high 14 points in the win against Chaminade.

ABOUT BUTLER (3-1): The Bulldogs seem to have gotten over their 15-point loss to Xavier last week. Rotnei Clarke and Khyle Marshall, held to seven points apiece in the loss, put those performances behind them in a hurry once they reached Maui. Marshall, a 6-6 junior forward, scored a career-high 24 points in the win against Marquette and came back with 10 points and 11 rebounds against North Carolina. Clarke, 6-0 senior guard who played three seasons at Arkansas before transferring, scored 20 points and hit the last second 3-pointer to beat Marquette, then put up 17 points against the Tar Heels.

Clippers at Thunder: What bettors need to know
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-4.5, 198.5)

The Los Angeles Clippers are the current owners of the longest winning streak in the Western Conference and have already built up a 2 1/2-game lead in the Pacific Division. The Clippers will put their six-game winning streak on the line on Wednesday, when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder have won seven of their last eight and have put up 229 points in back-to-back victories, placing them one spot above Los Angeles in scoring average.

The Clippers began their winning streak with a dominating 106-84 home win over the San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 7 and knocked off three straight playoff teams from the East - including defending champion Miami - before becoming the rare team to win at San Antonio on Monday. That marked the beginning of a four-game swing that will take them to Brooklyn and Atlanta after Oklahoma City. The Thunder have done most of their damage against the bottom of the NBA, with only one of their eight victories coming against a 2011-12 playoff team.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, PRIME (Los Angeles), FSOK (Oklahoma City), ESPN

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (8-2, 8-2 ATS): Los Angeles played eight of its first nine games at Staples Center but certainly appeared ready for the road on Monday, when Chris Paul knocked down a jumper to ice the game in the final minute. Paul is averaging 16.3 points and 10.0 assists and has been helped by a much-improved bench that has allowed the All-Star to be sharp at the end of games. Jamal Crawford is leading the team in scoring at 19.7 points off the bench and third-year guard Eric Bledsoe continues to play his way into greater minutes.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (8-3, 6-4-1 ATS): Oklahoma City ranks second in the NBA in scoring offense but has had trouble on the other end, allowing an average of 103.7 points over its last three games. One of those was a 107-97 home loss to Memphis on Nov. 14, during which the Thunder struggled to find a rhythm offensively. That problem has certainly been fixed. Kevin Durant recorded a triple-double in Sunday’s 119-109 win over Golden State while Russell Westbrook scored 30 points. Westbrook had shot 30 percent (9 of 30) in the two previous games before going 12-for-22 against the Warriors.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Oklahoma City.

                        * Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

                        BUZZER BEATERS:

                        1. Clippers F Caron Butler suffered a shoulder strain against the Spurs and will be a game-time decision on Wednesday.

                        2. Los Angeles took three of the four meetings last season, including a 100-98 victory in Oklahoma City on Apr. 11. Paul led the way with 31 points in that contest.

                        3. Westbrook is a career 33.8-percent shooter in 15 games against the Clippers.
