    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting football machups this holiday weekend........

-- Stanford @ UCLA-- Both teams coming off huge wins.......

-- Oregon @ Oregon State-- Best Civil War game ever?

-- Notre Dame @ USC-- Tough spot for USC's freshman QB Wittek

-- Raiders @ Bengals-- Carson Palmer returns to Cincinnati.

-- Falcons @ Buccaneers-- Atlanta dodged a big bullet last week.

    -- 49ers @ Saints-- Rematch of LY's playoff game.

    *******

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Is it any wonder when you look at how Maryland is willing to shell out $50M to leave the ACC for the Big Dozen, that recruits/parents have their hands out during the recruiting process?

That’s how much money is involved in all this, yet the kids get a free college education and nothing else. The education is worth six figures, understood, but how much money is Johnny Manziel going to put into Texas A&M’s coffers if he stays there four years?

    12) ACC commish John Swofford has ruined his league; he had the best basketball conference, but traded that in so he could cash in on the football cash bonanza, but he whiffed on that, and now he’s lost Maryland, one of the ACC’s charter members.

Swofford should go get Louisville/Memphis (use part of Maryland’s $50M to buy them out of Big East) so at least he has a premier basketball league.

    11) If you missed our man Les Miles after the Ole Miss game Saturday, check it out on YouTube; Les went all Mad Hatter in his opening statement to the press right after LSU beat the Rebels 41-35. Its classic stuff, and a big part of why we like him a lot.

    10) Readinghteplay.com is an interesting website with some good knowledge on it; they report that the pointspread affects only 15-18% of NFL games; the other 82-85%, the winner covers.

    9) One of the hardest things to do in coaching is to turn a losing program around; the one thing a losing team must begin to do, as simple/obvious as it sounds, is to begin winning.

Effort has to be there, good practice habits help, team unity sounds great, but actions speak louder than words, and until you start beating the enemy more regularly, you’re still a losing team.

Instilling confidence that they can do that into a group of players takes time and often it means acquiring a lot of new players, people who have played for winning teams in the past and who expect to win.

    8) Green Bay kicker Mason Crosby, who made only six of last 13 FGs, has been very good for the Pack since coming out of college (Colorado). Kicking seems to be like golf; you get the yips now and then. Crosby has built up some equity with Green Bay, but he’d be well-advised to get out of his funk fairly soon.

    7) Walk-on WR AJ Barker recently quit Minnesota's football team in a dispute about how his ankle injury was treated. Not only did he quit, but the kid went public with his dealings with coach Jerry Kill—he wrote a long, spirited article that was at least a little interesting to read, even if I had never heard of the kid before yesterday.

Barker had gone from walk-on to team's leading receiver, but hadn't gotten a scholarship, which i part of this story. If you like college sports, its an eye-opening story, but I also wonder what was left unsaid by the player. Two sides to every story, you know?

    6) Miami Hurricanes weren’t going to a good bowl this year anyway; they applied self-imposed sanctions for this year, hoping to shorten their long-term sentence from the NCAA, something Ohio State should’ve thought of couple years ago.

    5) Linesmakers have Notre Dame -6 for their game at USC this week, with Trojans' QB Barkley (shoulder) out. Freshman QB Wittig is said to have a cannon arm, but he’s a freshman QB in a very big spot.

Side note: Matt Cassel of the Chiefs starts for an NFL team, but he never started a game at USC, having been Trojans’ backup QB for Palmer/Leinart, so chances are this Wittig kid is very talented, just extremely raw.

    4) Rob Gronkowski broke his arm Sunday while blocking for a PAT that made the score 59-24. Why is he out there at that time? Seems like an interesting question.

    3) Texas lost to Chaminade in the Maui Classic, making Rick Barnes first coach to lose to the Silverswords twice in this event-- he also lost to them when he was the coach at Providence. That not good.

    2) Mets drew less fans than the Reds LY; since CitiField opened in 2009, their home attendance is down 28.9%. Interesting to see what they do this offseason, to spur interest/ticket sales in an increasingly negative fanbase.

    1) I’m tired of listening to people bitch about football coaches; personally, I know next-to-nothing about in-depth football strategy, and I took a football coaching class in college (OK, it was a bogus class mostly for the football players, but still….), and I watch hundreds of games on TV.

Time management and replay challenges are different, thats something that really isn't football-related, more common sense-related.

Blocking schemes, passing trees, different pass defenses, its not something I’m well-versed in, and I’m guessing 90%+ of average fans aren’t either, so let the coaches coach and be quiet. Guys with the most good players are winning most of the time, anyway.

Pucking the trends: AHL betting news and notes

No NHL. No problem. Check out the latest betting news and notes from the young guns in the AHL.

      Hot Team: Toronto Marlies

The Marlies are starting to look like the Calder Cup finalists they were last season, winning six of their last seven games. In that span, Toronto has scored 34 goals, a huge improvement over 19 goals in its first eight games.

The added offense is coming from familiar sources like Nazem Kadri, who only managed three assists in October but has sprung to life in the last five games with 11 points. Nicolas Deschamps has scored in each of the last three games, while defensemen Jake Gardiner and Mike Kostka continue to generate scoring chances from the blueline, combining for 16 points in the last seven games.

Even with goal-scoring leader Leo Komarov looking to return to Russia, Toronto has the scoring depth to maintain its recent gains. If they find some consistency in goal, the Marlies could go far again this season.

      Cold Team: Manchester Monarchs

At the end of October, Manchester was 5-1-0-0 with an offense averaging four goals per game. In eight games since, the Monarchs have scored more than two goals in a game only twice -- their only two wins in that time.

Brandon Kozun, the team scoring leader with 13 points, is a minus-4 with no points in his last two games, while players like Andrei Loktionov and Slava Voynov are struggling to find consistency after spending significant time in the NHL last season.

Adding to their woes is the recent slump of starting netminder Martin Jones, who has allowed four or more goals in three of his last four starts. But Jones can only do so much if pucks aren’t going in at the other end of the ice.

      Prospect Watch: Binghamton Senators

Defenseman Jared Cowen is done for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum, but the Senators still have a number of exciting prospects to watch on Binghamton.

Robin Lehner is one of the league’s best goaltenders through 10 starts, with a 1.77 goals-against average and .945 save percentage. Lehner is the main reason the Senators aren’t at the bottom of the East Division, having scored a division-low 34 goals.

Mark Stone and Mika Zibanejad both have five points, but Stone has only played seven games, while Zibanejad has played all 13 for Binghamton. Jakob Silfverberg, a second-round pick in 2009, has seven points to start his first North American pro season.

      Scoring Leaders: Week 6

Rookie defenseman Justin Schultz continues to lead the league with 21 points, while his Oklahoma City teammate Jordan Eberle is next with 19. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has 17 points, tied with Nino Niederreiter, Gustav Nyquist, Brayden Schenn, Cory Conacher and T.J. Hensick.

      Surveying the schedule:

      - The Abbotsford Heat head south for the first time this season, with games against Texas (Friday), San Antonio (Saturday) and Houston (Sunday). The Heat are 2-2-0-1 on the road this season, a far cry from their 8-0-1-1 home record.

      - The Milwaukee Admirals have a busy week on the road. Starting on Tuesday in Chicago, the Admirals play four games around the midwest, heading to Peoria on Friday, back to Chicago on Saturday and east to Grand Rapids on Sunday.

Grey Cup odds: Argos open as slight home dogs

It was a wild weekend in college football that was full of upsets in big games. That trend also proved true north of the border.

Both the Toronto Argonauts and Calgary Stampeders pulled out huge wins as pups Sunday and will battle it out in Toronto for the 100th edition of the Grey Cup on November 25.

Until 1954, the Grey Cup was almost played exclusively in Toronto, because the largest stadium in Canada at the time (Varsity Stadium) was located in the city. Since the CFL was established in 1958, a team has enjoyed home-field advantage in the big game 10 times, posting a 4-6 straight-up record. Not exactly a stellar record in your own backyard.

The majority of CFL fans reside in Western Canada and make it a yearly tradition to travel to the host city, regardless of whether or not the teams they support are involved in the big game.

“The Grey Cup venue is decided in advance so it doesn't necessarily mean the host has the edge as they could have just backed into the final game,” says Covers Expert Matt Fargo. “I think it needs to be looked at in a different way than as a regular season game since the stadium will not consist of just the home team’s fans.

The Stampeders opened as 1.5-point faves at 5Dimes, with the total set at 54.5, against a Toronto squad that is a CFL-best 15-6 in Grey Cup games. The Argos have appeared in 12 Grey Cups in the city of Toronto (including the pre-CFL era) and came out on top in nine of those contests. Calgary is 6-6 all-time in the championship tilt, with its last win coming over Montreal back in 2008.

“This week, I think the home field is bigger than normal because Toronto is playing so well heading into the game and with this being the 100th edition, it gives some added spark to the game,” Fargo notes. “That being said, I think the right team is favored though, as Calgary is coming in as the hotter team with the better record and the better stats.”

Toronto enters on a red-hot 4-0 SU and ATS run overall and has owned Calgary in their last five meetings, going 5-0 SU and ATS. But the real value in this game may lie with the over. The Argos have played over the number in four of their last five games while the Stamps are 6-0 over/under in their last six overall.

Aron Black, oddsmaker at bet365.com, anticipates an increased amount of action on this weekend's game.

"The Grey Cup won't take as much (action) as an NFL game on primetime, but it will have a lot more action than a regular season game," notes Black. "I would expect to see around 4-5 times as much action at least over a regular game. We won't change our oddsmaking, but we will book as we normally do, to any sort of leans we have towards any team."

The following CFL teams have played in a Grey Cup game held in the team's city:

        1963 B.C. Lions (Vancouver) (loss- 21-10)
        1972 Hamilton Tiger-Cats (win- 13-10)
        1977 Montreal Alouettes (win- 41-6)
        1979 Montreal Alouettes (loss- 17-9)
        1982 Toronto Argonauts (loss- 32-16)
        1983 B.C. Lions (Vancouver) (loss- 18-17)
        1994 B.C. Lions (Vancouver) (win- 26-23)
        2002 Edmonton Eskimos (loss- 25-16)
        2008 Montreal Alouettes (loss- 22-14)
        2011 B.C. Lions (win- 34-23)

Maui Invitational: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (+12.5, 136)

After dropping their openers at the Maui Invitational in much different fashion, Mississippi State and Marquette will try to regroup when they meet Tuesday. The Bulldogs were blown out almost from the opening tip against No. 9 North Carolina, about 2 1/2 hours after Marquette lost to Butler on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Mississippi State only brought six scholarship players to the tournament and have eight available overall. Starting guard Jalen Steele broke his wrist last week against Florida Atlantic and reserve forward Colin Borchert is suspended for the trip.

                TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT MARQUETTE (2-1): The Golden Eagles are probably still wondering how they lost to Butler in the tournament’s opening game. They held a two-point lead with eight seconds remaining and Junior Cadougan was at the line shooting his second free throw. Cadougan missed, however, and Butler guard Rotnei Clarke brought the ball up court, flinging in a 3-point basket at the buzzer. If there was a silver lining from the game it was the play of 6-4 junior guard Vander Blue, who scored 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting and played like the top prospect the Golden Eagles recruited three years ago.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (1-2): Wendell Lewis and Gavin Ware turned in the two most impressive performances against the Tar Heels, and the 6-9 post players should pose a similar challenge for Marquette. Lewis scored 10 points against North Carolina, reaching double digits for only the fourth time in his four-year career. Ware, a 270-pound freshman, scored eight points off the bench and gathered nine rebounds.

Texas Longhorns vs. USC Trojans (+2, 119)

USC and Texas will try to rebound from disappointing first-round losses when they meet in the consolation bracket of the Maui Invitational. The Longhorns suffered a shocking 86-73 first-round defeat to Chaminade, a Division II program, less than 24 hours earlier. Chaminade had won only six previous games in its 29 seasons as tournament hosts. USC didn’t show up in the first half against Illinois either, committing nine turnovers in the first 12 minutes and falling behind by 31 points at the half before eventually losing 94-64.

                TV: 5 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

ABOUT USC (2-1): The Trojans will likely need more offense from senior point guard Jio Fontan if they hope to have an impact this season. The team’s second-leading scorer (10.5) and assist leader (3.2) two years ago, Fontan has cobbled together just 19 points through the first three games, is shooting 25 percent from the floor and has turned the ball over 10 times compared to 11 assists. After sitting out all of last season following knee surgery, Fontan has increased his shot totals and scoring each game. It would be beneficial to the Trojans if he could maintain that upward plane.

ABOUT TEXAS (2-1): If the Longhorns can’t get up for this game they could be in for another rude awakening. Texas can point to several areas in which it needs improvement. The Longhorns had just 10 assists compared to 18 turnovers and were out-rebounded by a team without a player taller than 6-8. They also shot 56.7 percent (17 for 30) from the free-throw line and 19 percent (4 for 21) from 3-point range. Sheldon McClellan, a 6-4 sophomore guard who entered the tournament averaging 22.5 points through the first two games, was held to 14 and most of those came when the game was out of hand.

Butler Bulldogs vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (-10, 138)

Butler won’t have long to savor its wild opening-round victory at the Maui Invitational. The Bulldogs will face No. 9 North Carolina on Tuesday in the semifinals. The Tar Heels ran right through Mississippi State in their opener 95-49. Butler has a better chance to stay with North Carolina if it can avoid double-digit turnovers. The Bulldogs gave the ball away only seven times against Marquette, allowing them to stay in the game and eventually win on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Rotnei Clarke. North Carolina took advantage of an undermanned Mississippi State team and forced 22 giveaways.

                TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT BUTLER (2-1): Brad Stevens must be especially pleased with the offensive balance displayed by his starters. Four finished in double figures against Marquette, led by a career-high 24 points from 6-6 junior forward Khyle Marshall. Clarke also appears to be settling in nicely. He led Arkansas in scoring as a junior, then redshirted last season after transferring. Stevens, who guided the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament final in 2010 and 2011, likely wants to see more from his bench, however. They combined for only two points against Marquette.

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (4-0): Not much went wrong for the Tar Heels in their tournament opener. They scored the game’s first nine points, hit a half-court shot to end the first half and continued to dominate even after their starters called it a day. Leslie McDonald was probably the biggest surprise. After finishing fifth in scoring on a talent-laden team two years ago, the 6-5 junior guard missed all of last season after undergoing knee surgery. He exploded for a career-high 21 points against Mississippi State, making 6 of 10 3-pointers.

Illinois Fighting Illini at Chaminade Silverswords (+14, 146)

Chaminade will need to shake off the euphoria of Monday’s shocking upset victory against Texas and buckle down for an equally tough foe in Illinois. The Fighting Illini beat USC by 30 points a few hours after Chaminade fans stormed the court following the Silverswords victory against the Longhorns, only their seventh win in 83 games as tournament hosts. Both teams looked real comfortable inside the Lahaina Civic Center. Illinois made 12 consecutive field goals during one stretch of the game. Chaminade, a Division II program, made 34 of 39 free throws and 10 of 30 3-point attempts.

                TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT ILLINOIS (4-0): The Illini were already loaded in the backcourt with seniors Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson, now they have sophomore Tracy Abrams elevating his game enough to pass junior Joseph Bertrand on the depth chart and Richardson in the scoring column. Abrams is averaging 15.2 points, second on the team to Paul, after averaging 4.3 as a freshman. Bertrand, fourth on the team in scoring last season (6.5) gives Illinois considerable depth at guard. He played a season-high 22 minutes against the Trojans and scored a season-high nine points while also contributing five rebounds and three steals.

ABOUT CHAMINADE (3-1): Chaminade hasn’t been to the semifinals of this tournament since beating Villanova in 1993. "We're ecstatic," said second-year coach Eric Bovaird. "That's an incredible win for our program. We believed all along that we could play with these guys over here." Even after missing their first 10 shots and falling behind 8-0, the Silverswords didn’t run and hide, instead storming back to take a four-point halftime lead and quickly extending it to double digits after intermission. Chaminade has never won two games in the same year at the Maui Invitational, something that could provide added motivation.

Brooklyn Nets at L.A. Lakers: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklyn Nets at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 208.5)

The Brooklyn Nets are getting accustomed to playing on a bigger stage following the franchise's offseason move from New Jersey. The lights will be even brighter when they arrive in Hollywood for a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in what is expected to be Mike D'Antoni's coaching debut with Kobe Bryant and company. D'Antoni, who is recuperating from knee-replacement surgery, had planned to be on the bench for Sunday's home win against Houston, but opted to watch his second straight game from the locker room amid concerns of a lack of mobility in the event players crashed into the bench.

While Los Angeles has won four of five since coach Mike Brown was fired on Nov. 9, Brooklyn has been even hotter. The Nets ran their winning streak to five games with a 99-90 victory at Sacramento on Sunday in the first of a three-game California road trip. Brooklyn will get its first glance at center Dwight Howard in a Lakers uniform. The Nets were rebuffed in numerous attempts to acquire the former Orlando Magic superstar before opting to trade for All-Star shooting guard Joe Johnson in the offseason.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Los Angeles), NBA TV

ABOUT THE NETS (6-2, 4-2-2 ATS): Brooklyn had been playing shorthanded with injuries to forward Gerald Wallace and MarShon Brooks, but both finally returned to the lineup and the added depth led to a 52-point effort from the bench against the Kings, led by Andray Blatche with 22. Center Brook Lopez had been mentioned as the main bargaining chip in last year's trade talks for Howard, but he suffered a broken foot just before the start of last season. Lopez had a string of three straight 20-point efforts snapped in Sacramento but is averaging 22.8 points lifetime against the Lakers.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (5-5, 5-5 ATS): It may not exactly rival the "Showtime" days of Magic Johnson and the Laker teams of the 1980s, but Los Angeles clearly has embraced the up-tempo style instituted by D'Antoni since he started running practices late last week. Kobe Bryant collected his first triple-double since November 2010 with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against the Rockets. "He just lets us go out there and play," Bryant said of D'Antoni. "We're just picking apart the defense. We're putting the defense in predicaments where they have to choose and we're making them pay."

                  TRENDS:

                  * Under is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings.
                  * Over is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings in Los Angeles.
                  * Road team is 12-4-2 ATS in the last 18 meetings.

                  BUZZER BEATERS:

                  1. Los Angeles has won the last eight meetings against the Nets.

                  2. The Nets are seeking their first six-game winning streak since running off 14 straight toward the end of the 2006 season.

                  3. The Lakers averaged 116.5 points in the last two games despite the absences of starting point guard Steve Nash (leg) and backup Steve Blake (abdominal).
