Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday..........

    13) Coming into this week, NFL teams that were +2 or better in turnovers were 52-8SU; on a strange November Sunday this week, they were 6-3, as the three teams who lost in OT all led by double figures at one point. Jags, Browns, Panthers, all teams trying to learn how to win. It ain't easy.

    12) Six teams didn't turn the ball over this week; they all won. If you're an underdog and don't create turnovers or score on special teams, how do you beat a superior opponent?

    11) Falcons won one of weirdest games in recent memory, beating Arizona 23-19 despite turning ball over six times on 15 drives. Matt Ryan threw three INTs in first quarter, but Cardinals were so inept on offense they benched starting QB Skelton in favor of San Diego State rookie Lindley after he was 2-7 passing to start the game.

Matt Ryan is first QB since 1967 (Bart Starr) to throw five INTs in a win, with no TD passes. Green Bay won the Super Bowl that year.

Redbirds started five drives in Atlanta territory, and scored 13 points. On a day when the Falcons tried to give a game away, Arizona wouldn't take it.

    10) New Orleans scored four TDs on nine drives, added a defensive TD in an easy 38-17 win at Oakland; Saints are now 5-5 after an 0-4 start. If I had a vote for NFL Coach of the Year and the Saints made the playoffs, I'd vote for Drew Brees. Seriously. No way he isn't the unofficial coach of this team.

    9) Andre Johnson put up Arena League numbers, 14 catches for 273 yards, as Houston came back from 34-20 down with 21:00 left to beat the spunky Jaguars 43-37 in OT. Jacksonville is 5-0 vs spread on road, but 1-9 where it counts, in the overall standings.

    8) Tennessee Volunteers fired Derek Dooley Sunday; not sure where they go from here. Coaching in the SEC is almost as bad as the NFL, because recruiting wars might be more intense than the actual games. Not enough good players in Tennessee to sustain an SEC program, so you have to hire a coach who is a nationwide recruiter. Not a lot of those out on the street.

Probably didn't help Dooley any that his dad is best coach in Georgia's football history; Vince Dooley was Herschel Walker's college coach.

    7) Has a guy ever been MVP and Comeback Player of the Year in the same season? Peyton Manning has a pretty good chance this year.

    6) Not sure why I thought of this today, but I did; best part of the HBO Hard Knocks series this summer was when Miami Dolphins traded CB Vontae Davis. GM Jeff Ireland call him into his office, tells him he's been traded, and all he wants to know is, "For who?" Isn't that the first question you'd ask, who did you trade me for?

Next thing he wanted to do was immediately call his mother, which was odd, but Ireland talked him out of it, fed him some BS lines that GMs do when they trade a player, then they sent him on his way to call mom. Good TV.

    5) Speaking of Miami, two weeks in a row they haven't had an offensive play of 20+ yards; other teams had an average of 4.81 per team this week.

    4) New England had Tom Brady throwing ball with a 52-24 lead and 5:40 left in the game; isn't that an invitation for someone to take a cheap shot? I mean, whats the point?

    3) Teams that had a 10+ yard edge in field position were 7-1 this week; Buccaneers somehow had an 11-yard edge in field position, despite being -2 in turnovers. Arizona lost despite a 17-yard edge in field position.

    2) Favorites are 7-6 vs spread this week, home teams 4-9, over is 5-8.

    1) Three Thursday games on Thanksgiving this week, with night game on NBC for the first time. Good sports week, with lot of college hoop and a bunch of college football rivalry games.

College football odds: Week 13 opening line report

Even as the Irish were exiting the locker room after Saturday’s win over Wake Forest, I’m sure they were wondering what Lane Kiffin had in store for them when they travel to USC for the season finale.

Kiffin’s Trojans dealt Notre Dame its only loss during an 8-1 mid-season run in 2011, and USC has muddled through a controversial 7-5 (3-8 ATS) season that includes a loss to city rival UCLA on Saturday night. Still, if developments in Eugene and Waco on Saturday night show us anything, it’s that – this year anyway – the improbable has become the possible.

ND is 11-0 (6-5 ATS) and undefeated SU for the first time since 1989. After beating Wake Forest on Saturday, the Irish needed either K-State or Oregon to go down to be virtually assured of a spot in the BCS title game. They hit the inside straight, and now even a loss at USC might not be a deal-breaker.

Pete Korner, founder and president of the Las Vegas-based oddsmaking firm, The Sports Club, has not recommended a line for this game because of the uncertain availability of USC QB Matt Barkley (right shoulder injury).

“With him we’d be looking at about USC -2.5; without him Notre Dame probably -3,” says Korner.

      Oregon (-13) at Oregon State

Twenty-four hours ago Oregon had the inside track on a berth in the BCS title game; now the Ducks have to take care of business just to win the Pac-12 North title. And the 8-2 Beavers are hardly pushovers – they pinned 62 on Cal on Saturday.

“Bear in mind that this is the biggest game of the year for Oregon State,” says Korner. “There will be some money on OSU, so I don’t see this line going any higher.”

      Florida (+8) at Florida State

Both teams are paying the price for mid-season indiscretions – the Gators lost to Georgia and Seminoles to North Carolina State. Neither has been decent against the number. Florida State is 3-7 ATS and Florida hasn’t covered since the memorable 33-point shellacking of South Carolina.

“We looked at this as a touchdown game,” says Korner. “Either team capable of winning.”

      Michigan (+6.5) at Ohio State

All the attention on Ohio in the presidential election is a small bite of cheese compared to Michigan Week. Thanks to the Tressell sanctions the Buckeyes can’t go beyond the regular season, but a top-3 ranking, unbeaten season and win over the Wolverines would help drain some kegs at parties in Columbus.

“We had this anywhere from 4 to 8.5,” notes Korner, “so we landed on 6.5.”

      Oklahoma State (+8.5) at Oklahoma

The Cowboys have put up more points (all games) than any Big 12 team, but the points are fool’s gold because 149 of their 454 came against Savannah State and UL-Lafayette. The Sooners still have a shot at the league title and an at-large BCS bowl game, but need help. Korner admits that up-and-down play by both teams makes this a tough number.

“We just thought a touchdown was a bit weak on this one, so we raised it a bit.”

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Hottest ATS team

Memphis Grizzlies (8-1 SU, 8-1 ATS)

There’s no team hotter ATS than the Griz, who have covered in eight straight games. Even more impressive is Memphis’ recent string of three consecutive covers against New York, Oklahoma City and Miami. The Grizzlies begin a five-game homestand Monday when they welcome Denver and will put their perfect 4-0 ATS home record on the line.

        Coldest ATS team

Phoenix Suns (4-7 SU, 2-9 ATS)

The Suns have had a tough schedule to open the season and that’s reflected in their SU and ATS records. Phoenix blew covers against the Heat, Lakers and Bulls this week but gets some much needed time off to regroup before hosting Portland on Wednesday.

        Hottest over bet

        Phoenix Suns (4-7 SU, 7-4 over/under)

The Suns have the second-worst defense in the league (104.3 ppg) and rank 14th in offense (98.3 ppg) - a major reason why they’ve been playing over the total early in the season. Phoenix is allowing its opponents to shoot 47.8 percent from the field and 43.2 percent from 3-point range, both close to league-worst marks.

        Hottest under bet

        Indiana Pacers (4-6 SU, 2-8 over/under)

The Pacers have played under the total in four consecutive games against Dallas, Milwaukee, Toronto and Washington. The combination of having the best defense in the league (90.3 ppg) and one of the worst offenses (89.3 ppg) has made Indiana a profitable under bet. David West leads the team in scoring, averaging only 15 points per game. With Danny Granger (knee) out for an extended period of time, the Pacers’ scoring woes are likely to continue.

        Scouting the schedule

-The Brooklyn Nets (3-2-2 ATS) head west for a three-game set that begins Sunday in Sacramento, followed by dates with the Lakers and Golden State this week. The Nets then return home for two tough contests with the Clippers and Blazers.

-The Atlanta Hawks (3-5 ATS) have a chance to gain some serious momentum in the next three weeks. They play seven of their next eight games at home, including two dates with the lowly Wizards. Only one of Atlanta’s next eight opponents (Clippers) currently has a winning record.

NCAAB Game of the Day: UCLA vs. Georgetown
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UCLA at Georgetown (Odds currently N/A)

After sitting out three games due to NCAA violations, highly touted UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad will make his much anticipated debut against Georgetown in the Legends Classic at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The 6-6 guard, ranked among the top recruits in the nation, was reinstated Friday by the NCAA after hearing an appeal from the Bruins. Georgetown could also be at full strength if sophomore forward Otto Porter Jr. returns from a concussion that kept him out of Wednesday’s 68-59 win over Liberty. The winner of the UCLA-Georgetown game faces the winner of the other semifinal between No. 1 Indiana and Georgia on Tuesday. The losing team will play in Tuesday's consolation game.

                  TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (2-0): Sophomore forward Greg Whittington scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds against Liberty, but it wasn’t a dominating effort for the Hoyas. Georgetown appeared unfocused in the second half, which could be expected considering the team’s youth. Georgetown’s roster doesn’t include a single senior and features 10 freshmen and sophomores. Freshman guard D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera averages a team-high 15 points, while Whittington has 24 rebounds through two games. Porter, a preseason All-Big East first-team selection, averaged 9.7 points and 6.8 rebounds last season.

ABOUT NO. 14 UCLA (3-0): With Muhammad’s eligibility drama behind them, the Bruins look to build on a promising start. Sophomore guard Norman Powell scored a career-high 27 points in a 110-70 win over James Madison on Thursday, and guard Jordan Adams is the first freshman in UCLA history to record at least 20 points in each of his first three college games. Adams is averaging 24 points, while senior point guard Larry Drew II has 25 assists through three games. Freshman guard Kyle Anderson is averaging a team-high 7.9 rebounds.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Bruins are 1-5 ATS in their last six neutral site games.
                  * Hoyas are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a win.
                  * Under is 4-1 in Hoyas’ last five overall.
                  * Over is 13-3 in Bruins’ last 16 neutral site games.

                  TIP-INS:

                  1. UCLA junior guard Tyler Lamb is listed as a gametime decision after missing the last two contests with a swollen knee.
                  2. Georgetown has been outscored in the second half of its first two games by seven points after outscoring opponents 68-46 in the first half.
                  3. UCLA won both previous meetings against Georgetown, in 2001 and 2003.
