Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

13) Over last 22 years, since 1990, 16 NFL teams made the playoffs who were below .500 after nine games, so if your team is struggling right now, there’s still hope. Not a lot of hope, but some.

12) Rams/Browns are only teams without a road win, though St Louis does have a tie, which is half a win, kind of. Cleveland is 5-1-1 vs spread last seven times they were road underdog of 6.5+ points.

11) Lakers unveiled a statue of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar outside Staples Center last night. My question is this: What took so long? He's not personable or a big commercial spokesman, but he's most dominant player in basketball history. High school-college-pro, total domination.

10) Blue Jays gave Melky Cabrera $16M for two years, as they continue to add to an already-impressive lineup. Toronto doesn't have a manager yet; think they're getting some phone calls/resumes after this week?

7) Big West’s basketball power rating has been gradually slipping, but when San Diego State joins league next year, you’re going to see it take a bounce up. Aztecs will be like UNLV was in that league 25 years ago, a powerful program that attracts quality transfers- they’ll raise the level of the other teams in the league, the way UCSB/New Mexico State’s programs got a bump while competing with Tark the Shark’s great Rebel teams.

6) Since 2009, nine of 12 ACC basketball teams changed head coaches.

5) UConn would be wise to sign up interim basketball coach/alum Kevin Ollie to a long term contract; who they going to get that’s as good or better? His presence keeps the Huskies’ alums/Coach Calhoun invested in the program, which is important.

4) This NHL lockout is hurting my trip to Las Vegas next spring; was great fun the last couple years, sitting in sportsbooks watching NHL playoffs with Canadian tourists, especially those from Vancouver. Hopefully they’ll have at least part of a season.

3) Dallas Cowboys covered three times in their last 16 games as a home favorite. Redskins’ coach Mike Shanahan, who used to be with Denver, is 3-21-1 vs spread in his last 25 games as a home favorite.

2) If college sports is hurting for money so much, where do all these teams find money for alternate jerseys/helmets? North Carolina had a whole new set of helmets Thursday night; who foots the bill for that?

1) Governor of Minnesota is mad because the state of Minnesota is funding more than half of the Vikings’ new stadium, but Viking owners mentioned the term “PSLs”, as in legalized extortion, earlier this month.

People shouldn’t have to buy PSLs for a publicly-funded stadium, simple as that. Its stealing.

NASCAR betting: Ford EcoBoost 400 preview

Sit down, strap in and hold on tight. Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway promises to be one wild ride.

The final race in the long NASCAR Sprint Cup season will determine a champion, but there are so many sub-plots Sunday that the championship battle is almost an afterthought.

Brad Keselowski seems firmly in control of his own destiny. He leads the points standings by 20 points and all he needs to do is finish 15th or better and the title will be his.

“We are planning on doing the same things at Homestead this weekend that got us to this point,” crew chief Paul Wolfe said. “Being cautious and ‘laying up’ is a good way to get into trouble. We are an aggressive team, and while we have the big picture in mind, we are going to do what we do.”

Don’t give up on Jimmie Johnson, who currently sits in second place, though. As he proved last week, one error, one mechanical misstep, can dramatically change the championship picture and Johnson knows it.

“My focus is going down there and winning the race,” Johnson told the media. “We typically haven’t had to have that mentality going into this race, but we have shown we can race for the win.”

Keselowski is in control of the overall points lead but that could certainly be up for grabs Sunday. At Homestead he has finished 20th or worse in three of four races; his best finish was 13th, and he was 20th here last year. Johnson has staged a comeback at Homestead before. He did it in 2010 and it could happen again Sunday.

“This 48 Lowe’s team can do it again,” Johnson said. “We have nothing to lose and can gamble and take chances. Brad (Keselowski) doesn’t have that luxury. This isn’t over. This team never gives up and we don’t intend to, now.”

Since the Chase is now a two driver race, all eyes will be on the top two for the crown. But that doesn’t mean the race winner will come from those spots; several other drivers have a great chance of visiting victory lane Sunday; there are several with agendas and even more who could steal the show.

The driver Johnson beat for the title in 2010, was Denny Hamlin. Hamlin won here in 2009, since then though he’s finished 14th and was ninth in this race last year. However, after stumbling in the Chase and falling out of contention, Hamlin will be eager to add another win to his Homestead resume. If he can find the speed he had earlier in the Chase he could do just that Sunday.

Matt Kenseth will be making his 470th and final start for Roush-Fenway Racing Sunday. Kenseth fizzled as the Chase came to a close, but he has one last shot at going out on a high note. He won here in 2007 and was fourth in this race last season. With the history Roush-Fenway has here he could be the driver to beat Sunday.

Tony Stewart has had a forgettable Chase. After storming to the title last season, Stewart has struggled in this year’s Chase. However, with three wins here, including in this race last year if Stewart races like he did last year he could finish the season on a high note.

Martin Truex Jr., is another driver who has had a forgettable Chase. At Homestead though, Truex has a pretty decent record.

“Last year we ran third and had a shot at winning,” Truex said. “The year before, we were leading and got a flat. This track is definitely a place where I believe we can win. It is certainly one of my best tracks. I can’t think of a better place to end the season.”

If Truex can recapture what he had here last season, he will be a contender Sunday.

Despite their dust-up last week at Phoenix the biggest battle won’t be between Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer but Bowyer and Kasey Kahne. Bowyer could have been a factor in the Chase here, but after being crashed out by Gordon last week, he fell from his third place spot. Kahne meanwhile took over the third spot in the Chase and considering how his championship run has been going would love to finish there. Bowyer wants it back and will have his sights set firmly on finishing ahead of Kahne. Kahne was seventh in this race last year, but with a different team. Bowyer, also with a different team, finished just ahead of Kahne in this race last year in sixth. Expect that kind of result Sunday. With both drivers now with new teams, either one could score their first Homestead win Sunday.

Kevin Harvick would love to follow-up his hard earned win at Phoenix last week and he could do just that Sunday. He has never won here but was in the top three in the last four races. He was eighth here last season, but if he can get back to how he ran prior to that, he should be near the front Sunday.

While there are drivers who will be favored to win Sunday, the overall favorite will be Carl Edwards. Edwards didn’t make the Chase, lost his crew chief in the middle of the season and hasn’t won a race since the spring of 2011. Edwards has one last shot to win this year and begin to right his ship. His record at Homestead, especially in the last four races is the best of the field. He has two wins, a pole and was second here last season.

“Statistically speaking Homestead is our best track, and I really like racing there a lot,” Edwards said. “It seems like every time we go there we have a car that could win.. We’ve got a lot of things happening right now and we’re building the best team we can for next year. There would be no better way to kick off the 2013 season than with a win at Homestead now.”

Toronto (10-9) @ Montreal (11-7)-- Toronto scored 31-43-42 points in winning last three games to get here; Argonauts lost two of three vs Montreal this year, upsetting Als 23-20 (+4) here in Week 5, then losing 31-10 (+3.5) in Week 13, 27-12 (+2.5) at home three weeks after that. Argos covered six of their last seven road games; they are 6-2 in last eight games as an underdog. Montreal is 7-2 at home this year, 4-5 vs spread as a home favorite- they got upset here in first playoff game LY- they're 0-6 this year when scoring less than 27 points. Last four Toronto games went over the total; six of last eight Alouette games stayed under.

Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Clippers (-6.5, 194.5)

The Los Angeles Clippers have benefited from some home cooking to rebound from a sluggish start. After splitting their first four contests, the Clippers will vie for their fifth consecutive victory on Saturday when they entertain the Chicago Bulls. Blake Griffin, who collected 20 points and 14 rebounds in a 107-100 victory over Miami on Wednesday, averages a career-best 31.7 points versus the Bulls.

Chicago has alternated wins and losses in its last six outings - with the former coming to light as it opened a five-game road trip on Wednesday with a 112-106 overtime victory over Phoenix. Carlos Boozer overcame some uneven play to record a season-high 28 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulls, who have won their lone two contests away from the United Center. Boozer had failed to score in double figures in three of his previous five contests.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE BULLS (5-3): Veteran guard Kirk Hinrich distributed seven assists in his return from a strained right hamstring and gluteus area. Nate Robinson flourished in his absence, recording a season-high 18 points versus Minnesota last Saturday while adding seven assists against Boston on Monday. Guard play will continue to be under the microscope as the team soldiers on without former NBA MVP Derrick Rose.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (6-2): Los Angeles hasn't ventured too far from home this season - posting a 4-2 mark while also claiming a "road" victory over the rival Lakers at the Staples Center. Former Sixth Man of the Year winner Jamal Crawford, who is the highest scoring bench player this season, bolstered his resume with 22 points off the bench versus the Heat. Chris Paul has averaged 21.2 points in 11 career games against the Bulls.
