    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Purdue was up 75-69 with 0:40 left, but an awful flagrant foul call let Villanova tie score, and Wildcats beat Purdue 89-81 in OT in NYC.

-- Knicks were down 12 with 7:00 left, rallied to beat Spurs 104-100 in a high-level NBA game. New York is now 6-0.

-- Drexel lost 86-84 in OT to Illinois State, second loss already for Dragon team that is supposed to be the best team in the CAA. Hmmm

-- Providence only has six scholarship players; could make for long year. Friars were gutty, but lost 77-75 to UMass in Puerto Rico.

-- Rough day for the SEC: Murray State was up 45-19 at half at Auburn, won by 20. Southern Miss beat Georgia in OT. Not good.

-- Gardner-Webb beat DePaul 71-59; Blue Demons play in the Big East. Gardner-Webb, well, they don't; they're an Atlantic Sun also-ran.

    *******

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

    13) Andrew Luck’s first genuinely big game as Colts’ QB, in Foxboro. When schedule came out last spring, no one thought this would be a big game anymore, but it is.

    12) Kansas State’s last road game is at Baylor; win there, then beat Texas and its off to play for a national championship.

    11) Chargers had a 24-0 halftime lead first time they played the Broncos; they lost 35-24. This is Norv Turner’s last stand coaching San Diego- they won't make playoffs if they lose here. Broncos covered their last five games as a favorite.

    10) Are there any polls that recognize Ohio State, even though they’re on probation? If there are, Buckeyes have shot at a mythical national title. This is very tough game for them, at Wisconsin.

    9) Jets and Brian Schottenheimer parted ways after last season; now they meet up again, with Mark Sanchez in a funk, having been blanked by his college coach last week. Now he faces his old coordinator. Rams are 3-0 in games where spread is 3 or less points.

    8) Jim Mora Jr gets his first shot at crosstown rival USC; you get idea the gap between Bruins-Trojans is getting smaller, but until UCLA beats them couple times, LA is still the Trojans’ town.

    7) Red Sox are right now worst team in AL East, by far; supposedly they tried to get in on the Marlins’ fire sale, but didn’t get a deal done. When are they going to make moves, and what will they be?

Would make sense if they panicked and threw a pile of cash at free agent OF Josh Hamilton. Not sure it would work out well, but it would quiet people.

    6) Oakland Raiders gave up 42-55 points last two weeks, now Drew Brees and the Saints come to town; good luck there. New Orleans gets back to .500 with win here.

    5) Vanderbilt is favored over Tennessee for third time in last five years, but they’re 1-13 in last 14 series games. Much like Norv Turner in Denver, this could be Derek Dooley’s last stand with the Vols.

    4) Clippers beat Miami Wednesday, host the Bulls Saturday and visit San Antonio Monday; tough stretch of games. How is it as soon as Grant Hill leaves Phoenix, he’s out hurt again? What is it about the Suns’ trainers that kept him healthy those years in the desert?

In five years with Phoenix, Hill played in 91.7% (362 of 392) Suns' games; he hasn't played in any of the Clippers' eight games this year.

In six years in Orlando, the six years before Phoenix, he played in 32.0% (131-410) of Magic's games. Suns' trainers must be pretty good.

    3) Ravens at Steelers is always a big game, with Roethlisberger out this week, tough game for Steelers to win. Whats up with Baltimore running a fake FG last week, when they led 41-17 late in third quarter?

    2) This Saturday used to be Rivalry Saturday in college football, the best day of the whole year, including New Year’s Day; the BCS nonsense and the expansion of the season finished all that, to point where half the SEC is playing I-AA teams this week. Seriously; 20 years ago, this week was the end of the regular season in college ball, except for 10-12 rivalry games Thanksgiving weekend.

    1) Alex Smith is expected to play Monday night; not so sure about Jay Cutler. Bears’ two losses this year are at night; they haven’t beaten 49ers in Candlestick since 1985.

Game of the day: Knicks at Grizzlies
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Memphis Grizzlies (-5.5, 192.5)

One night after taking down the top team in the Western Conference, the New York Knicks attempt to do the same against another top club from the Southwest Division when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday. These two teams combine for a record of 12-1 SU and ATS to start the season.

New York remained the only unbeaten team in the NBA on Thursday as it overcame a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to post its sixth straight win, a 104-100 victory in San Antonio. The Knicks, who had lost nine consecutive road meetings with the Spurs, ended the contest with a 27-11 run.

The setback by San Antonio made Memphis the only team in the West with just one loss. After dropping their season opener to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Grizzlies have reeled off six consecutive victories, including a 107-97 triumph in Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Memphis took a 44-41 lead on a 3-pointer by Quincy Pondexter with 3:45 remaining in the second quarter and did not trail thereafter.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (6-0, 6-0 ATS): Thursday marked the first time this season New York has allowed 100 points. Its previous low was the 94 scored by Dallas in last Friday's victory. The Knicks, who entered the game first in the league with a 3-point percentage of 42.6, was 11-of-25 from beyond the arc. Friday's contest concludes New York's three-game road trip. It returns home to face Indiana on Sunday before another three-game trek to New Orleans, Dallas and Houston.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (6-1, 6-1 ATS): Memphis is two victories away from matching the longest winning streak in franchise history. The Grizzlies won eight in a row from Jan. 11-25, 2004. The club has won a record 14 straight home games, last losing in its own building on March 16 to Toronto in overtime. It has not lost at home in regulation since Feb. 12 against Utah. The Grizzlies are 5-0 when scoring at least 100 points.

            TRENDS:

            * Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Memphis.
            * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
            * Favorite is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Grizzlies F Zach Randolph has recorded a double-double in every game this season.

            2. Memphis is just 13-18 in the all-time series.

            3. The clubs also meet at Madison Square Garden on March 27.

                Armadillo's Write-Up

                Friday, November 16

-- First road game for Rutgers; they were upset by St Peter's in opener; Knights have 3 starters back from 14-18/6-12 team; they're picked #11 in Big East, whose teams are 4-1 vs spread on road when spread is less than 10 points. Princeton won 59-57 at Rutgers last season.
-- Denver lost 80-59 at California LY; Bears won first two games by 13-17 points- they have 3 starters back from 24-10/13-5 team. Pac-12 clubs covered five of six games with single digit spread. Pioneers lost opener at Iona 65-58, after being down 23 at half- they're picked #2 in WAC.
-- Fresno State won 55-47 at Pacific LY; Bulldogs won a hideous 39-30 game at Cal-Riverside Wednesday- they led 13-11 at half!!!, but they did lose opener by hoop at Texas, so they must have some talent. Bulldogs has 3 starters back from LY. Pacific has all 5 starters back (11-19/6-10).
-- Vanderbilt's leading returning scorer averaged 3.1 ppg LY, so they're starting over; Commodores beat Oregon 78-64 in Nashville LY, but that team finished 25-11. Ducks have seven freshmen and two JC transfers after 3 of their 5 freshmen recruits LY transferred- they're rebuilding.

-- Long Beach State lost 84-78 in Chapel Hill LY, but they had seniors all over place; this 49er team has three transfers (not all of whom are in lineup yet) and five freshmen- they lost 62-44 at USC Tuesday. North Carolina is also young but lot more talented- they're on way to Maui.
-- Oklahoma State needed OT to beat Akron yesterday; they had couple guys play 40 minutes. OSU is picked #5 in Big X. Tennessee had three guys play 30+ minutes yesterday, but no one played more than 34 as Vols beat Asheville by 7 (up 10 at half). Vols are #3 pick in SEC.
-- UMass played seven guys 20+ minutes yesterday, none more than 34 in 77-75 win over Providence team with six scholarship players. UMass is #5 pick in A-16. NC State is picked to win ACC, high praise in itself; they survived Brown's 1-10 shooting Thursday to beat Penn St. by 19.
-- Baylor whacked Colorado 80-63 in 2nd round of NCAAs last March, but Bears graduated whole frontline- Jackson hit 6-10 from arc, had 31 in win yesterday, but Austin has gimpy ankle, minutes may be limited for this game. Well-coached Buffs held Dayton to 32% shooting yesterday.
-- St John's shot 50% inside arc in 64-53 win at Charleston yesterday, its second quality win (Detroit) of week; Red Storm had three guys play 35+ minutes. Murray State was up 45-19 at half over Auburn, won by 20- they made 11-23 from arc. No starter played more than 26:00.

-- Wake Forest is well-coached, but has only one junior, two seniors, so they're real young. Deacons beat Radford by 12 in opener- they're #11 pick in ACC, but improving. UConn beat Michigan State in Germany in its opener last week; they have new coach, good PG in Boatright.
-- Villanova was down 6 with 0:40 left last night, rallied to beat Purdue in OT; they had four kids play 33+ minutes, outscored Purdue 33-16 on foul line. Alabama already has 3-point wins over South Dakota State, Oregon State, two good teams- only one kid played 30+ min. last nite.
-- Notre Dame has 4 starters back from 22-12/13-5 team; they're #3 pick in Big East. Irish won by 9-27 in first two games, allowing 53 ppg. They step up in class playing St Joe's squad that has all 5 starters back from a 20-14/9-7 team- Hawks hammered Yale by 26 in their opener.
-- Clemson's team is five freshmen, six sophs, two seniors, so games on road could be dicey early on; Tigers beat Furman by 10 LY, have date vs Gonzaga Thanksgiving Day in Orlando. Paladins lost three starters from LY's 15-16 team. ACC favorites are 10-4 against spread this month.

NASCAR betting: Ford EcoBoost 400 preview

Sit down, strap in and hold on tight. Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway promises to be one wild ride.

The final race in the long NASCAR Sprint Cup season will determine a champion, but there are so many sub-plots Sunday that the championship battle is almost an afterthought.

Brad Keselowski seems firmly in control of his own destiny. He leads the points standings by 20 points and all he needs to do is finish 15th or better and the title will be his.

“We are planning on doing the same things at Homestead this weekend that got us to this point,” crew chief Paul Wolfe said. “Being cautious and ‘laying up’ is a good way to get into trouble. We are an aggressive team, and while we have the big picture in mind, we are going to do what we do.”

Don’t give up on Jimmie Johnson, who currently sits in second place, though. As he proved last week, one error, one mechanical misstep, can dramatically change the championship picture and Johnson knows it.

“My focus is going down there and winning the race,” Johnson told the media. “We typically haven’t had to have that mentality going into this race, but we have shown we can race for the win.”

Keselowski is in control of the overall points lead but that could certainly be up for grabs Sunday. At Homestead he has finished 20th or worse in three of four races; his best finish was 13th, and he was 20th here last year. Johnson has staged a comeback at Homestead before. He did it in 2010 and it could happen again Sunday.

“This 48 Lowe’s team can do it again,” Johnson said. “We have nothing to lose and can gamble and take chances. Brad (Keselowski) doesn’t have that luxury. This isn’t over. This team never gives up and we don’t intend to, now.”

Since the Chase is now a two driver race, all eyes will be on the top two for the crown. But that doesn’t mean the race winner will come from those spots; several other drivers have a great chance of visiting victory lane Sunday; there are several with agendas and even more who could steal the show.

The driver Johnson beat for the title in 2010, was Denny Hamlin. Hamlin won here in 2009, since then though he’s finished 14th and was ninth in this race last year. However, after stumbling in the Chase and falling out of contention, Hamlin will be eager to add another win to his Homestead resume. If he can find the speed he had earlier in the Chase he could do just that Sunday.

Matt Kenseth will be making his 470th and final start for Roush-Fenway Racing Sunday. Kenseth fizzled as the Chase came to a close, but he has one last shot at going out on a high note. He won here in 2007 and was fourth in this race last season. With the history Roush-Fenway has here he could be the driver to beat Sunday.

Tony Stewart has had a forgettable Chase. After storming to the title last season, Stewart has struggled in this year’s Chase. However, with three wins here, including in this race last year if Stewart races like he did last year he could finish the season on a high note.

Martin Truex Jr., is another driver who has had a forgettable Chase. At Homestead though, Truex has a pretty decent record.

“Last year we ran third and had a shot at winning,” Truex said. “The year before, we were leading and got a flat. This track is definitely a place where I believe we can win. It is certainly one of my best tracks. I can’t think of a better place to end the season.”

If Truex can recapture what he had here last season, he will be a contender Sunday.

Despite their dust-up last week at Phoenix the biggest battle won’t be between Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer but Bowyer and Kasey Kahne. Bowyer could have been a factor in the Chase here, but after being crashed out by Gordon last week, he fell from his third place spot. Kahne meanwhile took over the third spot in the Chase and considering how his championship run has been going would love to finish there. Bowyer wants it back and will have his sights set firmly on finishing ahead of Kahne. Kahne was seventh in this race last year, but with a different team. Bowyer, also with a different team, finished just ahead of Kahne in this race last year in sixth. Expect that kind of result Sunday. With both drivers now with new teams, either one could score their first Homestead win Sunday.

Kevin Harvick would love to follow-up his hard earned win at Phoenix last week and he could do just that Sunday. He has never won here but was in the top three in the last four races. He was eighth here last season, but if he can get back to how he ran prior to that, he should be near the front Sunday.

While there are drivers who will be favored to win Sunday, the overall favorite will be Carl Edwards. Edwards didn’t make the Chase, lost his crew chief in the middle of the season and hasn’t won a race since the spring of 2011. Edwards has one last shot to win this year and begin to right his ship. His record at Homestead, especially in the last four races is the best of the field. He has two wins, a pole and was second here last season.

“Statistically speaking Homestead is our best track, and I really like racing there a lot,” Edwards said. “It seems like every time we go there we have a car that could win.. We’ve got a lot of things happening right now and we’re building the best team we can for next year. There would be no better way to kick off the 2013 season than with a win at Homestead now.”

                          Favorites:

                          Carl Edwards
                          Matt Kenseth
                          Jimmie Johnson
                          Kevin Harvick
                          Martin Truex Jr.
                          Tony Stewart

Bottom line: The race at Homestead has been won from a top-10 starting position in nine of 13 races. Denny Hamlin won in 2009 from the 38th starting position, the furthest back a race winner has started.
