    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some NFL trends, with Week 11 on the horizon........

-- Redskins are 10-21-3 in their last 34 home games.

-- Miami covered 11 of last 14 divisional road games.

-- Dallas failed to cover its last six home games.

-- Packers covered their last six post-bye games.

-- Denver covered its last five games as a favorite.

-- Bears are 5-1-1 vs spread in last seven Monday night games.

    *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

    13) Mike Redmond got hired to manage the Marlins a week or two ago; he never managed above A ball. Wonder if he knew he was still going to be managing a minor league team next season, just one that plays in a great stadium against big league teams. Poor guy is going to have a long summer.

    12) When it comes to contract obligations for 2014 and beyond, Marlins have $0 on the books, as in, zero. Think about the Bronx Bombers owing Alex Rodriguez $114M over the next five years. Who would you rather be?

    11) If they ever decide to contract franchises, Marlins are team they need to cut. Put Mr Loria out of business, move the A’s to Miami and two problems would be solved.

    10) ESPN.com reports that players traded from Miami to Toronto should wind up paying roughly 14% more taxes on the money they earn in home games, roughly 45% of their salary. No decent free agent will sign with Miami anymore unless they get a no-trade clause.

    9) Tigers signed Torii Hunter for two years; you have an 80+year old owner, a 69-year old manager and Hunter just doesn’t seem that old. In other words, the future is now in Detroit.

    8) Spring training starts earlier next year because of the goofy World Baseball Classic; can’t wait to see which pitchers get hurt during the regular season because they pitched in this meaningless exhibition that is designed to “grow the game”, a euphemism for “put more money in the pockets of greedy MLB owners”. Braves’ first spring training game is a ridiculously early February 22.

    7) I’m thinking the site of the Final Four should host a doubleheader to tip off every college hoop season in mid-November.

This week’s event in Atlanta was excellent; do it every year, wherever the Final Four is being held, just have different teams every year.

    6) Gonzaga looked really sharp Monday night; trick is to maintain that for the next 4.5 months. Teams like West Virginia and Butler, who looked awful this week, will use losing badly as a learning tool and will gradually improve as the season goes on.

    5) If you watch Celtic games on NESN, you hear analyst Tommy Heinsohn, who is so bad he makes Hawk Harrelson sound like Vin Scully. Not sure how they keep putting him on the air.

    4) Over last two games, Alabama’s football team didn’t force a turnover (-5), while allowing opponents to convert 21-38 3rd down plays. Hard to beat good teams like that, even if you’re better than they are.

    3) Mike Brown’s salary for this year (for not working) is $4.5M; Mike D’Antoni will make $4M, but combined its still less than if the Lakers had hired Jeannie Buss’ boyfriend (Phil Jackson), who would've commanded a $12M/year salary.

    2) It bears repeating that Brown got fired after five games, during which time Nash-Bryant-Gasol-Howard were on court together for a combined total of 45:00, less than one game. How do you fire a guy that fast?

Brown gets fired, but assistant Eddie Jordan, who got hired to teach the Lakers the Princeton offense which helped cause this whole debacle, he gets to stay. Whats up with that?

    1) First a sex scandal in the US Army, now the CEO of Waffle House is in hot water because he can’t keep his pants on.

What the hell’s going on out there?

Where the action is: NFL mid-week line moves

NFL Week 11 lines have been out and about since Sunday and early action has already forced sportsbooks to adjust their original numbers.

We go off the Strip to the historic Golden Nugget and talk to race and sportsbook supervisor Aaron Kessler about the biggest moves on the Week 11 board.

Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills – Open: Pick, Move: -2

Some shops opened this AFC North showdown as a pick’em, but instant action on the home side has moved this spread to Bills -2.

Kessler says last week’s games - a strong showing by Buffalo versus New England and a horrible loss for Miami versus Tennessee - are still fresh in the minds of bettors.

“Miami had a bad game, and Buffalo had a good game. The way the public goes, I’m surprised it’s only at -1.5,” Kessler told Covers. “But I’d be surprised if this gets up around three.”

Cleveland Browns at Dallas Cowboys – Open: -9.5, Move: -7.5

Sharp money has sided with the road team, knocking two points off the opening spread at most books. Cleveland, while just 2-7 SU, has shown plenty of fight against good teams this season.

“Cleveland is not as bad as people think,” says Kessler. “This is purely a wise-guy move. The average bettor off the street isn’t walking in and saying, ‘Gimmie the Browns’. They’re a pitiful team but I don’t label them with Jacksonville or Kansas City. They’re just not appealing to the eye, and therefore not a heavily bet team.”

Kessler expects the public money on Dallas, coming off a strong showing versus Philadelphia, to balance out the sharp action and close this spread around -8.

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers – Open: -3.5, Move: +3.5

Ben Roethlisberger’s shoulder injury has swung this spread a touchdown, which may be a little too much according to some expert handicappers. Kessler took this game off the board after Roethlisberger went down Monday night, but not before taking some money on the Steelers.

The total has also seen a major adjustment, going from 46 points to 41. Kessler doesn’t think that number is too high, even with Big Ben sidelined.

“Scoring is so far up this year, and the Ravens showed last week that they’ll put it on teams (winning 55-20 versus Oakland),” he says.

San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos – Open: 50.5, Move: 48

The total for this AFC West grudge match is slowing slimming down, with early action on the under.

Denver has hung big scores on its recent opponents, putting up an average of 34 points during its current four-game winning streak. However, bettors don’t think San Diego can hold up its end of the bargain, especially after last week’s loss to Tampa Bay.

“(Philip) Rivers has looked atrocious lately,” Kessler says of San Diego’s QB, who has thrown 12 INTs including two last weekend. “He’s looked so bad, you almost want to bump up the total because he’s giving the other team a touchdown.”

As for the spread, Kessler says they’re trying to stay high on Denver with bettors remembering what happened the last time these division foes met – a 35-24 Denver win after trailing 24-0 at halftime.

“Ever since that game, (San Diego) hasn’t been the same and they’ve gone in the tank,” he says.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Celtics at Nets, Heat at Nuggets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Brooklyn Nets (-3, 191.5)

The Boston Celtics could be without star point guard Rajon Rondo when they visit the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night. Rondo rolled his right ankle in the third quarter of Wednesday's 98-93 win over Utah and didn't return. Coach Doc Rivers said following the game that he didn't know if Rondo would play against the Nets. Both teams have won three in a row. The Celtics' latest victory - sparked by Paul Pierce's 23 points - was their fifth in six games. Brooklyn is coming off its best performance of the season in a 114-101 win over Cleveland on Tuesday. Deron Williams scored 26 points and had 10 assists while Joe Johnson added 25 points. The Nets, who averaged 93 points going into the game, finally showed some offense, shooting 54.5 percent. Brooklyn led 64-42 at halftime and coasted to the victory.

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (5-3, 2-5-1 ATS): Boston obviously isn't the same team without Rondo, or even if he's slowed down by his injury. He had 10 assists Wednesday, his 32nd straight game in double figures. Jeff Green and Leandro Barbosa scored 16 points apiece off the bench, both playing the entire fourth quarter. Green, who missed last season because of a heart condition, had a season high in points, while Barbosa, signed as a free agent, matched a season-best output.

ABOUT THE NETS (4-2, 3-2-1 ATS): Brooklyn's much-hyped backcourt finally had a big game Tuesday. Williams and Johnson, who have appeared in a combined eight All-Star games, went 19-of-36 from the field. Center Brook Lopez added 23 points. The Nets could also be getting some help on the injury front. Forward Gerald Wallace and guard MarShon Brooks could return from ankle problems. Backup center Andray Blatche left practice Wednesday with a migraine, but is expected to play.

        TRENDS:

        * Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
        * Celtics are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
        * Favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
        * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings at the Nets.
        * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
        * Celtics are 9-3 ATS in the last 12 road meetings versus Nets.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. The Celtics have won three of four on the road with the only loss coming in the opener against the Heat.

        2. The Nets begin a three-game West Coast trip on Sunday with games against the Kings, Lakers and Warriors.

        3. Boston won all three games between the teams last season and has taken eight of the last 10 in the series.

Miami Heat at Denver Nuggets (+2, 204)

Miami doesn't have much time to get over a 107-100 loss to the Clippers as it travels to Denver for Thursday's game against the up-and-down Nuggets. The Heat are 2-2 on a six-game trip that ends Saturday. All three of Miami's losses have come away from home by a total of 45 points. Shoddy defense has been a problem for the Heat. Miami has allowed an average of 107 points in the last three games.

Overall, the Heat has given up over 100 points six times in nine games. Denver coach George Karl's team has yet to find any consistency in going .500 in the early season. The Nuggets' four-game winning streak ended with a 110-100 loss Monday in Phoenix. Denver lost its first three games and its four defeats have been by a combined 35 points. The four wins have been by a total of 44 points. The Heat defeated the Nuggets 119-116 in Miami on Nov. 3, thanks to a fourth-quarter rally and 40 points by Chris Bosh.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, Sun Sports (Miami)

ABOUT THE HEAT (6-3, 4-5 ATS): Dwyane Wade, playing with a sprained left foot, was far from 100 percent in Wednesday's loss. He was held to six points, made just 2-of-10 field-goal attempts, and committed five turnovers in 29 minutes. LeBron James scored 30 points with seven assists and five rebounds in 41 minutes, but the Heat looked like a tired team in the second half. Miami was outscored 33-20 in the third quarter and trailed by 19 points in the fourth period.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (4-4, 5-3 ATS): Forward Kenneth Faried, who leads the league in offensive rebounds, is expected to play after falling to the floor and hitting his head Monday. He was pulled briefly and returned, but didn't practice Tuesday. Karl is confident the NBA's fourth-leading rebounder will play against Miami. Faried is averaging 13.9 points and 10.8 rebounds. He had 22 points with 12 rebounds in the first game against the Heat.

        TRENDS:

        * Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in Denver.
        * Home team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
        * Heat are 3-12-1 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
        * Heat are 0-6 ATS in the last six meetings in Denver.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. The teams have split the four games they've played since James, Wade and Bosh joined forces in Miami.

        2. Denver is shooting 64 percent from the foul line, which is last in the NBA .

        3. Miami hasn't won in Denver since Jan. 29, 2002, losing 10 in a row.
