    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting football games this coming weekend........

-- USC @ UCLA-- Jim Mora Jr's first shot at the Trojans.

-- Kansas State @ Baylor-- Wildcats have to beat Bears/Texas to play for an unlikely national title.

-- Vanderbilt is favored over Tennessee for third time in last five years, but they're still just 1-13 in last 14 series games.

-- Colts @ Patriots-- In May, no one thought this would be a big game.

-- Chargers @ Broncos-- Norv Turner's last stand.

-- Ravens @ Steelers-- Roethlisberger has a bum shoulder; could be a long night for Byron Leftwich.

    *********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

    13) Seven SEC football teams are playing I-AA foes this weekend. 7 out of 14; half the SEC. Is it some kind of holiday I don't know about?

    12) Georgia made the SEC football title game, so coach Mark Richt cashes in a $150,000 contract bonus; hope he at least buys the players pizza to thank them.

    11) Kentucky beat Maryland by 3 in Brooklyn in large part because of a smallish former walk-on named Jarrod Polson, who got one scholarship offer, from Liberty of the Big South Conference. Go figure. Wildcats play Duke tonight, in feature game of the ESPN college hoops marathon.

    10) Fresno State scored three defensive TDs Saturday night in Reno; don't see that too often in college ball.

    9) NCAA basketball Eastern Regionals will be in Madison Square Garden in 2014, first time NCAAs have been in MSG since 1961.

    8) Pac-12 basketball tournament in March is in Las Vegas, at MGM Grand; interesting to see how that event draws, but for the other 10 teams, guess its better than going to LA every March.

    7) Three college hoop games on ships were a debacle this year; only one was actually finished, and that game was awful because of the wind. Still, there will be games on ships next year. There has to be better way to honor the military than holding games under poor playing conditions.

    6) If you're a night owl and like golf, Australian Masters is this weekend, so that'll be fun. Golf Channel has the action.

    5) Speaking of which, Camilo Villegas/Stuart Appleby are both headed back to Q School, thats how competitive the PGA Tour is. Appleby has won nine PGA tournaments in his long career.

    4) Jeremy Lin is first Harvard graduate to play in the NBA since 1954.

    3) Clippers/Lakers both played at home Sunday; would love to know how many people were at both games.

    2) Funny how the Knicks canned Mike D'Antoni because their so-called superstar wouldn't play hard for him, but the Lakers signed him up to be their coach, because Steve Nash/Kobe Bryant like playing for him. Not too hard to see why the Knicks' last title was in 1973, when they had a reserve forward named Jackson. #18, Phil Jackson.

    1) Watching all this NBA coaching news, something tells me Phil Jackson didn't really want to coach the Lakers, so he kept asking for stuff until they looked elsewhere. Didn't want to turn his girlfriend down, but didn't want to work for her daddy/brother anymore.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, November 13

-- Harvard was 26-5/12-2 LY, but their senior co-captains withdrew from school due to a cheating scandal; Crimson beat a D-3 team by 15 in opener. UMass has 4 starters back from 25-12/9-7 team, including best PG in A-16. Minutemen are picked #5 in A-16.
-- Temple lost 3 starters from 24-8/13-3 team that won regular season in A-14; WV transfer Pepper will help. Owls are picked #4 in bigger A-16. Kent State had solid 66-62 win over Drexel in opener, a brickfest where both teams shot under 37%. Kent is picked #3 in MAC East.
-- St John's lost 69-63 at Detroit LY; Red Storm is still very young and they lot tactician/assistant coach Dunlap to NBA, but Levin is healthy and they have a quality PG- they're picked #12 in Big East. Detroit beat stiffs by 35 in its opener; Titans are picked #2 in Horizon.
-- Xavier lost two starters to graduation, two to off-court issues- they also lost two assistant coaches, so they're rebuilding. Musketeers won by 12 at Butler LY; these teams are now A-16 rivals, but kept this game as non-league tilt. Both teams beat stiffs in opener. Butler has 4 starters back from 22-15/11-7 team, plus shooter in Arkansas transfer Clarke.

-- Michigan State played in Germany Friday night, so lot of travel for Spartans, who lost to UConn by 4, shooting 38% (10 shots blocked). Kansas has 3 starters back from 32-7/16-2 team- they won opener by 19, despite making just 2-21 from arc.

College hoops 24-hour marathon betting cheat sheet
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

College basketball bettors are pulling an all-nighter this Tuesday with ESPN’s annual 24-hour NCAAB marathon, starting with West Virginia at Gonzaga, which tips off at midnight Tuesday.

If you’re planning to put on the coffee and take in all the action or just picking your spots, here’s a cheat sheet for Tuesday’s college hoops marathon.

              12 a.m. ET – West Virginia Mountaineers at Gonzaga Bulldogs (-11, 138)

Two teams that faced each other in last season’s NCAA tournament square off late Monday night when No. 22 Gonzaga hosts West Virginia in an Old Spice Classic play-in game. The Bulldogs cruised to a 77-54 victory over the Mountaineers in the Round of 64 and have more familiar faces returning than reloading West Virginia.

              2 a.m. ET – Davidson Wildcats at New Mexico Lobos (-5.5, 144)

New Mexico was one of the best bets in college basketball last season, boasting a 23-9 ATS mark. The Lobos return three starters from that team, but Davidson is the favorite to win the Southern Conference and brings eight of its top nine players back from 2011-12.

              4 a.m. ET – Houston Baptists Huskies at Hawaii Warriors (-13, 148.5)

In the shadow of point shaving accusations, the Warriors posted the best over mark in the land. They topped the total in 20 of their 28 games in which a number was set. Hawaii, which lost some talented supporters this offseason and returns only two starters, leaned on its defense in a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Sunday. It held the Golden Lions to 54 points on 26 percent shooting, including 7-of-38 shooting in the second half.

6 a.m. ET – Stony Brook Seawolves at Rider Broncs (-3)

Stony Brook knocked off Rider 79-62 last season. The Seawolves were the class of the America East in 2011-12, going 22-10 SU and 3-3 ATS in lined games. All three of those ATS losses came away from home in neutral-site conference tournament games. Rider finished 14-12-1 ATS, including a 7-5 ATS mark in lined home games.

8 a.m. ET – Northern Illinois Huskies at Valparaiso Crusaders (-18.5)

The Crusaders return all five starters for a team that took the Horizon League regular season title last year. Valparaiso defeated NIU, 59-48, on the road last season but just failed to cover as a 12-point favorite. Six-foot-7 Australian forward Ryan Broekhoff scored 19 points in that win. He’s one of six seniors back for Valpo this year.

10 a.m. ET – Harvard Crimson at UMass Minutemen (-9.5)

The Minutemen do have an up-and-coming team in the A-10, with budding stars like Chaz Williams leading a roster that returns four starters. However, UMass may be looking past their New England rivals in this early-morning matchup, with a trip to tropical Puerto Rico on this week’s itinerary. Harvard is projected to win the Ivy League again and knocked around some notable programs last season.

12 p.m. ET – Temple Owls at Kent State Golden Flashes (+3.5)

Kent State has already had a tough test to start the season, slipping by Drexel 66-62 as a 7.5-point home underdog Friday. The Golden Flashes looked to seniors Chris Evans and Randal Holt down the stretch, giving a young KSU team another upset win to start a season. Last year, the Golden Flashes stunned West Virginia out of the gates.

              2 p.m. ET – Detroit Titans at St. John’s Red Storm (-5)

Steve Lavin is back on the sidelines for the Johnnies after missing most of last season while recovering from prostate cancer surgery. Lavin benched PG D’Angelo Harrison in an exhibition last week after some behavior issues and is still waiting to hear the fate of Orlando Sanchez and Marco Bourgault, who are waiting for the NCAA’s go-ahead.

4 p.m. ET – Butler Bulldogs at Xavier Musketeers (+4)

Xavier and Butler have split their last four meetings, going back to 2008, with the Musketeers taking the two most recent encounters. Three of those four games have played over the total. These two programs meet for the first time as conference rivals Tuesday, with Butler making the jump to the A-10. Xavier blew away shorthanded Fairleigh Dickinson in the opener, with seven players scoring in double figures.

7 p.m. - Michigan State Spartans vs. Kansas Jayhawks (-2)

Tom Izzo said his team had a “deer in the headlights” feel to them in a season-opening loss to UConn in Germany Friday. There may be more of the same when MSU faces Kansas at the Georgia Dome in one of two marquee games to wrap up the marathon. The Spartans may be a little worn down after coming back from Germany and then having to make the trip to Atlanta. They could also be without guard Travis Trice, who is doubtful after suffering a concussion versus UConn.

9 p.m. ET – Duke Blue Devils vs. Kentucky Wildcats (-3.5)

As far as names go, they don’t get any bigger than this in college hoops. These two superpowers have met just once since 2000, with Duke taking a 95-92 OT win over UK in 2001. The Blue Devils will look to their big men to dominate the glass and pick up second-chance looks. The Wildcats nearly got burned by another ACC member, escaping with a 72-69 win over Maryland as 10.5-point favorites Friday. Kentucky was out-rebounded 46-34 by the Terps and is now just 3-12-1 ATS in its last 16 games versus ACC opponents heading into Tuesday's showdown with Duke.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers (+1, 197)

The Lakers have found their new head coach in Mike D'Antoni but he won't be on the sideline Tuesday when Los Angeles hosts the San Antonio Spurs. D'Antoni, a former head coach with the Suns and Knicks, was hired in the wee hours of Monday morning and won't join his new team until later this week. Instead, interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff will lead the Lakers, who've lost three of the past four times San Antonio visited Staples Center.

The Spurs are off to a 6-1 start for the second time in the past three seasons. This game wraps a four-game road swing on the West Coast for San Antonio, which is coming off back-to-back wins at Sacramento and Portland. Typically known for their sound fundamentals, the Spurs currently rank next-to-last in the league in turnovers (16.6 per game) after committing 61 total miscues in the three prior games on this trip.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, Fox Sports Southwest (San Antonio), TWC SportsNet (Los Angeles).

ABOUT THE SPURS (6-1, 4-2-1 ATS): The reserves stepped up in Saturday's 112-109 win at Portland, with Gary Neal pouring in a career-best 27 points to lead San Antonio to a 63-4 advantage in bench points. Point guard Tony Parker is expected back in the lineup after missing the Portland game with the flu. Tim Duncan currently leads the Spurs in scoring, rebounding and blocks. He's also got four double-doubles, most recently going for 23 points and 12 rebounds in Friday's 97-86 win at Sacramento.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (3-4, 3-4 ATS): Bickerstaff has led Los Angeles to back-to-back wins after the Lakers fired Mike Brown on Friday morning after the team got off to a 1-4 start. Former coach Phil Jackson was the popular choice to replace Mike Brown, and was in negotiations to return but when talks broke down, the Lakers turned elsewhere. The actual date of D'Antoni's debut has yet to be determined as D'Antoni is recovering from recent knee replacement surgery.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 7-2 in the last nine meetings in Los Angeles.
                * Under is 20-8 in the last 28 meetings.
                * Spurs are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 vs. NBA Pacific.
                * Lakers are 2-7 ATS in their last nine vs. NBA Southwest.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. Lakers PG Steve Blake underwent an ultrasound for an abdominal strain after Monday's shootaround and will miss the contest. At least he traveled to the hospital in style; Kobe Bryant took Blake for the procedure in Bryant's helicopter.

                2. D'Antoni is reuniting with PG Steve Nash, who ran the coach's quick-paced offense to perfection while Phoenix posted five straight 50-win seasons. However, Nash is out for at least another week with a stress fracture in his left leg.

                3. Spurs G Danny Green has made a 3-pointer in 25 straight regular-season games dating back to last season. That's the longest active streak in the league.

State Farm Champions Classic: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The State Farm Champions Classic features four teams that have been to the national title game in four of the last five years. Here's a look at the two marquee games going down in the Georgia Dome Tuesday night:

Michigan State Spartans vs. Kansas Jayhawks (-2.5, 129)

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo wasn’t pleased with his frontcourt after a surprising season-opening loss to rebuilding Connecticut. He’ll need his post players to bounce back quickly given the 22nd-ranked Spartans’ next opponent.

Michigan State will face reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Jeff Withey and 2011 national runner-up Kansas in the opening round of the State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday in the Georgia Dome.

The Spartans failed to exploit an obvious mismatch against the inexperienced Huskies' frontcourt in a 66-62 loss in Germany. Seventh-ranked Kansas, meanwhile, opened with a 74-55 victory over Southeast Missouri State.

This is the ninth meeting between schools with a combined 22 Final Four appearances and five national championships. It’s the first since Michigan State knocked off Kansas in the 2009 NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal before losing to North Carolina in the final.

                    TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (0-1): Izzo’s teams always play a stiff non-conference schedule and usually improve as the season progresses. And Michigan State, which returns four of its top six scorers, has nowhere to go up but after a dismal showing against the Huskies in Germany. The Spartans fell behind 20-6 early, shot 37 percent and committed 15 turnovers while allowing Connecticut to shoot more than 46 percent. The front-court combination of Adreian Payne and Derrick Nix, charged with helping to replace All-American Draymond Green, combined for 12 points and seven turnovers. On a positive note, guard Branden Dawson, who tore his ACL last March, had 17 points and seven rebounds and point guard Keith Appling added 17.

ABOUT KANSAS (1-0): Kansas is favored to win a ninth straight Big 12 title despite losing star forward Thomas Robinson to the NBA, and Withey’s presence is a big reason. The 7-footer has become the Jayhawks’ go-to player and he responded with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in the season-opening win. Withey is one of three returning starters who are joined by promising red-shirt freshman Ben McLemore (12 points, nine rebounds, five assists) and freshman Perry Ellis (15 points, eight rebounds). There’s plenty of room for improvement after Kansas shot only 38 percent against the Redhawks, including 2-of-21 from 3-point range. Point guard Elijah Johnson, the team’s leading returning scorer (10.2 points), played through foul trouble and finished with only four points on 1-of-5 shooting.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Spartans are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                    * Spartans are 7-2 ATS in their last nine vs. Big 12.
                    * Jayhawks are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 vs. Big Ten.
                    * Over is 5-2-1 in Spartans last eight non-conference games.
                    * Under is 19-7 in Jayhawks last 26 non-conference games.

                    TIP INS:

                    1. “I just thought that Payne looked out of it and I think it was because he was trying to maybe do what (Draymond) did at that position and he can't,” Izzo told the Detroit News.

                    2. Withey set an NCAA Tournament record last season with 31 blocked shots in six games.

                    3. The State Farm Champions Classic features MSU, Kansas as well as Duke and Kentucky. Those four programs have a combined 17 NCAA titles between them.

Duke Blue Devils vs. Kentucky Wildcats (+3.5, 140)

While the college basketball season offers a feast of stellar games over the sum of its duration, there is already a tasty morsel on the plate. No. 9 Duke will tip off against third-ranked and defending national champion Kentucky on Tuesday during the Champions Classic in Atlanta.

The traditional powers were both successful in their season openers as the experienced Blue Devils cruised to a 74-55 triumph over Georgia State while the new-look Wildcats eked out a 72-59 win over Maryland.

Kentucky, which received two first-place votes in Monday's USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll, is adjusting after overhauling the majority of its roster following last season's national championship.

                    TV: 9:30 p.m. ET., ESPN

ABOUT DUKE (1-0): Mason Plumlee made his presence felt with 19 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots as the Blue Devils blasted the Panthers. Plumlee could wreak havoc on the boards against Kentucky, which was outrebounded by a 53-38 margin (28-13 on the offensive end) in its opener. Despite being hampered by a sore foot, fellow senior Seth Curry drilled a trio of 3-pointers en route to a 15-point performance. Duke erupted for 11 3-pointers in the season-opening victory.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (1-0): Nerlens Noel will be looked upon to soften the blow of the departure of Anthony Davis, who was the top overall pick of the 2012 NBA draft. Noel is hardly a scoring machine, but the 6-foot-10 freshman had nine rebounds and three blocked shots against Maryland. Jarrod Polson eclipsed his career total by scoring 10 points in the opener. Polson could see additional time with fellow guard Ryan Harrow still battling the flu. Harrow, who is a North Carolina State transfer, has been held out of practice since Friday's victory.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Blue Devils are 0-4 ATS in their last four vs. Southeastern.
                    * Wildcats are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 vs. Atlantic Coast.
                    * Under is 4-1 in Blue Devils last five non-conference games.
                    * Over is 5-2 in Wildcats last seven non-conference games.

                    TIP-INS:

                    1. Sophomore power forward Kyle Wiltjer had a game-high 19 points and top-10 recruit Archie Goodwin added 16 in Kentucky's season-opening victory.

                    2. Duke guard Tyler Thornton picked up the surprise start in the opener and didn't disappoint. The junior drew rave reviews from coach Mike Krzyzewski following his 13-point, three-assist, two-steal performance.

                    3. Wildcats backup guard Julius Mays suffered an eye injury versus Maryland and is uncertain for Tuesday's game.

NFL odds: Week 11 opening line report

Week 11 of the NFL season is boiling over with bad blood.

There are some classic football grudge matches on the board, which always make sledding a little more rough for NFL handicappers. Some of these rivalries have lost their shine while others are as heated as ever.

Perhaps the most intriguing meeting between divisional foes is the Baltimore Ravens facing the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field on Sunday Night Football. Oddsmakers have posted the Steelers, who face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football in Week 10, as 3.5-point home favorites.

While the spread seems on par with a similar meeting between these AFC North foes in Week 9 last year, the total is much higher than bettors are used to when it comes to the Ravens versus the Steelers.

Books have posted a number of 46-points, with Baltimore flexing its offensive muscles in a 55-20 win over the Oakland Raiders Sunday and Pittsburgh putting up points in its three straight wins heading into Monday.

“Normally, for a Baltimore-Pittsburgh game, you’d expect to see a total of 34 or 36 points,” Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service, The Sports Club, told Covers. “But Baltimore has proved it can put points up there and Pittsburgh is no slouch. It's a bit of a sign that times are changing.”

Since 2001, in the regular season and playoffs, the Ravens and Steelers have combined to go 16-8-1 over/under, including topping the total in both meetings last season. They have faced an average total of 36.2 points in that span and the highest number for one of those contests was 43 points, which finished in a push (Steelers won 23-20 at home in Week 16 of the 2009 season).

Korner says now is the time of year when the weather has a big impact on how they set and bet NFL totals. The extended forecast for Sunday night is calling for cloudy skies and temperatures in the high 30s.

“That cold, damp East Coast weather could play into the total for this game,” says Korner. “But that’s not a problem if people want to take the under.”

San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos (-7.5, 49.5)

This AFC West rivalry used to decide who had the inside track on the division crown. But, looking at the early spread for this game, it’s easy to see which way the power has shifted.

Denver, which has won four in a row, opened as high as an 8-point favorite online and Korner wouldn’t be surprised to see this spread go higher by kickoff.

“Denver looks great and this seems like the perfect scenario – at home, on that grass and showing well,” he says. “San Diego hasn’t been showing it at all. The die-hard dog fans may wait and see how high this will go but I expect nothing but Denver money. Books will need San Diego by the time this kicks off.”

The Chargers lost 35-24 to the Broncos at home on Monday Night Football in Week 6, blowing a 24-0 halftime lead. San Diego has since gone 1-2 SU, most recently losing to Tampa Bay 34-24 Sunday.

Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots (-9.5, 53)

The Colts and Patriots used to run the roost in the AFC and every time they met, it felt like the Super Bowl.

A lot has changed since those days. Tom Brady is still doing work in New England, but Indianapolis is under the command of a new premier passer. Rookie QB Andrew Luck, the top pick in the NFL draft, has helped lead the Colts to four straight wins.

Books have Luck and Indianapolis flirting with a 10-point spread, after early action on the Colts dropped the line to single digits.

Korner says comparing Indianapolis to Buffalo, which lost 37-31 to the Patriots as a 13.5-point road underdog Sunday, could shed a little light on where this spread is heading.

“We know Indy is a much better team than Buffalo,” he says. “New England could blow them out, but the Colts could see what the Bills did last week and, with Indianapolis coming in as hot as they are, this could turn out to be a great game.”

Chicago Bears at San Francisco 49ers (-3, 38)

Injuries to the two starting quarterbacks have this game off the board at the majority of shops. Korner and his crew sent out a suggested spread of 49ers -3, giving the field-goal edge to the home team.

Korner says the injury to Bears QB Jay Cutler hurts more than the injury to 49ers QB Alex Smith, what with the game in San Francisco and the emergence of backup Colin Kaepernick as a threat under center for the Niners.

Kaepernick passed for 117 yards and added 66 yards on the ground and a TD in place of Smith, who left Sunday’s 24-24 tie game with St. Louis after a helmet-to-helmet hit.

Cutler also suffered a head injury in the Sunday night loss to Houston. His replacement, veteran passer Jason Campbell, threw for 94 yards on 11-for-19 passing after stepping under center late in the second quarter.

“The difference is larger for the Bears quarterback,” says Korner. “(Cutler is) big. He’s the guy running the show and a big reason why they’re playing so well.”

The total for this Monday night game was sent out at 38, which would tie as the lowest total on the Week 11 board (St. Louis at New York is set at 38 points).

Pucking the trends: AHL betting news and notes

No NHL. No problem. Check out the latest betting news and notes from the young guns in the AHL.

                          Hot Team: Grand Rapids Griffins

The Griffins are turning their rough October into a distant memory. Grand Rapids was 2-3-1-1 last month but is on a five-game winning streak in November. In that span, the Griffins have outscored their opponents 20-10 on their way to the top of the Midwest Division.

Much of their recent success can be credited to rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek. The former Ottawa 67’s starter began the season in the ECHL but has been stellar since getting called up, going 4-0 with a .940 save percentage.

Gustav Nyquist, who played 18 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season, leads Grand Rapids with 15 points, good for second in the league in scoring. With both their offense and defense on a roll, the Griffins don’t show any signs of slowing down soon.

                          Cold Team: Norfolk Admirals

After a hot start to the season, reality has set in for the Admirals. Norfolk had lost four of five games in November heading into Monday. Goaltender Igor Bobkov has been pulled after the first period in each of his last two starts, while the Admirals’ offense scored only four goals in their last three losses.

Leading scorers Peter Holland and Kyle Palmieri have gone cold, with one three points between them in the last three games. Rookie defenseman Sami Vatanen has two assists this month, a step backwards from the seven points in six games he posted in October.

Norfolk is in Albany Monday followed by three home games, which is good news for the Admirals considering their home record. But two of those games are against Eastern Conference-leading Springfield.

                          Prospect Watch: Oklahoma City Barons

Justin Schultz slowed down a little in the past week. The rookie defenseman went two games without recording a point after starting the season on a nine-game streak. But Schultz scored the OT winner against Abbotsford Saturday and still leads the league in scoring with 16 points.

Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins trail Schultz with 12 and 11 points, respectively, but the real story on the Barons’ top line is former sixth-round pick Teemu Hartikainen, who played 29 games with the Oilers over the past two seasons and has 10 points for Oklahoma City.

Hartikainen is keeping pace with his marquee linemates and making his case for a return to Edmonton, perhaps in more of a scoring role, once the NHL resumes playing.

                          Power Players: Charlotte Checkers

No team has been more effective with the man advantage than the Checkers this season. Charlotte is converting 30 percent of its power-play chances, accounting for 18 of its league-leading 50 goals scored. Zach Boychuk and Drayson Bowman each have four power-play goals.

The Checkers’ effective power play starts with defensemen Marc-Andre Gragnani and Justin Faulk, both of whom spent most of last season in the NHL. Gragnani and Faulk quarterback Charlotte’s top unit and often appear in the assist column when a power-play goal is scored. Gragnani has nine assists on the season, while Faulk has 11.

With 19 points so far, the Checkers lead the league, and they will likely stay near the top if other teams keep taking penalties against them.

                          Surveying the schedule

                          - The Toronto Marlies return to Canada from a successful Texas road trip after stopping in Oklahoma City Tuesday. The Marlies won three straight in the Lone Star State and will try to maintain that momentum when they face the Bulldogs in Hamilton Friday before hosting two games on the weekend.

                          - The Lake Erie Monsters will be the latest team to try and derail the Abbotsford Heat’s home stranglehold. Through eight home games, the Heat have yet to lose in regulation. Lake Erie will have two chances Tuesday and Wednesday before returning to Cleveland to host Grand Rapids Friday.
