Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday..........

    13) I'm thinking to myself, if I owned an NFL franchise, four most important people to hire would be: a) personnel guy, b) head coach, c) QB, d) trainer. For some reason, Carolina let a really good head coach walk two years ago, in a cost-cutting move. Not very smart.

John Fox came back to Charlotte Sunday, and his Broncos waxed Carolina 36-14, getting a punt return for a TD and a defensive score. Denver is going to be in the playoffs; the Fox-less Panthers? The draft is in April.

    12) Denver's Trindon Holliday ran that punt back for a TD, but being a cool guy/showoff, he flipped the ball to the ground as soon as he thought he was across the goal line. Problem is, he wasn't in the end zone yet when he did it. Luckily for Bronco backers, the replay official let the play stand, which begs the question.......

"What percentage of replay officals are competent, and what percentage just collect an easy paycheck?" Some guys seem reluctant to review/overturn any call. Its a fair question.

    11) Tampa Bay scored TDs on a blocked punt and an INT, beating the Chargers in a game they were outgained 426-279. San Diego isn't going to make the playoffs; rumors have Andy Reid replacing Norv Turner as San Diego's coach next year.

    10) Speaking of Reid, the Eagles became the first team since 1966 to give up TDs on a fumble, INT and punt return in the same quarter.

Nick Foles played his first significant snaps after Michael Vick got hurt. If he is the Eagles' future, likely it'll be playing for a different head coach.

    9) Favorites are 6-7 in NFL so far this week; home teams 6-7, over 8-5. Teams that were +2 or better in turnovers were 7-0 this week, 6-1 against the spread (NE). Teams that had a 10+yard edge in field position were 5-0-1, with only the 49ers not winning.

    8) Speaking of which, the first tie since 2008 took place at Candlestick, with the Rams-49ers battling to a draw for five quarters in a game that was fiercely competitive, if not always well-played.

Its been a while since I lost my voice watching the Rams, a sign of their gradual improvement under Jeff Fisher.

In a side note, Twitterverse exploded against tie games after this one ended; had no idea so many people cared about this. They happen so rarely, it was not a big deal to me. Last time the Rams tied was 1976.

    7) Tennessee owner Bud Adams ripped his club last week after they got waxed at home by the Bears, so Titans went to Miami and pounded on the Dolphins, who apparently are more comfortable as the underdog.

    6) Tom Brady is now 20-2 as a starter against the Bills. Buffalo had 14 penalties for 148 yards, including four pass interference penalties, three in the end zone. Bills had one PI penalty in their first eight games. Hmmm

    5) Cincinnati had four TD drvies in their easy win against the Giants; they were 79-11-12-16 yards. Eli Manning hasn't thrown a TD pass in his last three games, first time thats happened to him since his first month as an NFL quarterback. You go -3 in turnovers, you get beat.

    4) Atlanta just can't beat the Saints, especially in Superdome; not good, considering the Super Bowl is in New Orleans this year. Falcons had ball on the 1-yard line second-and-goal at the end, but threw two passes and lost to a team they always seem to lose to.

    3) Sunday night was a graphic example of why God invented Field Turf; playing surface at Soldier Field was a mess, players couldn't cut properly on it, which made for a crummy game. Poor weather cities need artificial turf-- NFL made the Patriots get it, could the Bears be next?

    2) Seahawks play with so much more confidence at home.

    1) I had guys on my fantasy baseball team miss half a season with a pulled hamstring; Danny Amendola was a warrior Sunday, with 11 catches for 102 yards, three punt returns for 14 yards, another 142 all-purpose yards nullified by penalty, including an 80-yard catch in OT. All this six weeks after he separated his collarbone from whatever the collarbone is supposed to be attached to. He has to be in agony today. Tough guy.

College football odds: Week 12 opening line report

It’s duck-hunting season, but can anyone take down the Oregon Ducks?

Not likely. At 10-0, Oregon has its sights set firmly on the national championship game, and the Ducks have the numerical bona fides to get there. With Alabama faltering on Saturday, the spotlight now is shining brightly on Oregon and the insane numbers that the Ducks have posted this season.

Coach Chip Kelly has basically turned the college game on its head with a frantic style of play that has caught traditional teams by surprise. The Ducks come at you with a battalion of running backs – six different players average more than five yards each time they lug it. And while Oregon runs twice as often as it passes, QB Marcus Mariota can also beat you – he has 28 TD passes and a 71.7 completion rate.

The only speed bumps located between OSU and an undefeated regular season, are dates with Stanford (home) and at Oregon State, each of whom have two losses.

And at first glance it would appear that the Cardinal have the defensive resolve to hold off Oregon. Stanford is the No. 1-ranked team in the country against the run (58.9), and by a significant margin. Over a three-game stretch in October the Cardinal held Cal, Washington State and Colorado to a combined 40 yards on the ground (on 72 carries, a an average of more than minus-five yards). Still, doing anything approaching that against Oregon would dwarf what the Spartans did at Thermoplae.

A look at that game and a few other important battles this coming week, as always with a thanks to Peter Korner, founder and president of the Las Vegas-based oddsmaking service, The Sports Club.

      Stanford (+24) at Oregon

“Oregon is right there,” said Korner in referring to a possible spot in the BCS championship game, “and their M.O. is keep to keep the accelerator to the floor. They are going to try to win byas many as possible. That’s just the way they do things.” One member of Korner’s oddsmaking team recommended a 17-point line, but the higher number prevailed.

      Kansas State (-12) at Baylor

Korner says that books may go even higher on this number. “Alabama losing [to Texas A&M] on Saturday will only cause K-State to keep things rolling,” he says. “We had this one as low as 9 and as high as 14.5, so I settled in at 12. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one higher at the books.”

Wake Forest (+24) at Notre Dame

“There are just a few teams that can win a national title,” points out Korner, “and Notre Dame is one of them.” Wake Forest is coming off a bad (37-6) loss at North Carolina State and its only quality win (North Carolina) was in early September.

Heat at Rockets: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Houston Rockets (+5, 196)

After losing their first two home games, the Houston Rockets attempt to even their record at the Toyota Center on Monday, when they host the reigning champion Miami Heat. Houston dropped home decisions to Portland and Denver before beginning its three-game homestand with a 96-82 triumph over winless Detroit on Saturday. The victory, which halted a three-game overall skid, came under assistant Kelvin Sampson as head coach Kevin McHale took a leave of absence earlier in the day to deal with a family matter.

Miami is hitting the midway point of its six-game road trip. The Heat began the trek Friday with a six-point victory in Atlanta before being trounced in Memphis on Sunday. Chris Bosh scored a team-high 22 points as Miami never led in the contest, and experienced an end to their four-game winning streak.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Miami), Comcast SportsNet (Houston)

ABOUT THE HEAT (5-2, 4-3 ATS): Miami was blitzed by Memphis from 3-point range as the Grizzlies were 14-of-24 from beyond the arc. Wayne Ellington accounted for half of Memphis' 3-pointers. "They hit a few 3s. Then Wayne got going and hit some back-burning 3s as well," said LeBron James, who scored 20 points on 10-of-19 shooting. "Then they hit a few at the end of the shot clock, too." Dwyane Wade returned from a one-game absence due to an illness and struggled, hitting only 3-of-15 shots.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (3-3, 3-3 ATS): James Harden scored a team-high 20 points and Marcus Morris was 6-of-7 for 12 points off the bench as Houston cruised to the 14-point victory Saturday. Rookies Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas made their NBA debuts, scoring five and three points, respectively. Forward Chandler Parsons has at least one 3-pointer in every game this season. The Rockets, who have lost five straight meetings with Miami, have won a franchise-record 32 straight games in which they hold their opponent under 90 points.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Houston.
              * Heat are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
              * Favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.
              * Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. The clubs split the first 50 games in the all-time series, with Houston posting a 14-10 record at home.

              2. Miami has been held under 95 points twice this season, losing both contests.

              3. The Rockets are 3-0 against the Eastern Conference but 0-3 versus the West.

NCAAB Game of the Day: West Virginia at Gonzaga
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Virginia at Gonzaga (Odds N/A)

Two teams that faced each other in last season’s NCAA tournament square off late Monday night when No. 22 Gonzaga hosts West Virginia in an Old Spice Classic play-in game. The Bulldogs cruised to a 77-54 victory over the Mountaineers in the Round of 64 and have more familiar faces returning than reloading West Virginia. Gonzaga opened its season Friday with a 103-65 trouncing of Southern Utah but knows the Mountaineers will provide a much truer test. “We’ll have to play very, very good,” Bulldogs coach Mark Few said. “It will be a tough one. We are going to have to be at our toughest level.” West Virginia has made the NCAA tournament in each of Bob Huggins’ five seasons as coach.

                      TV: 11:59 p.m. ET, ESPN.

ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (2011-12: 19-14): The Mountaineers are mixing three transfers into the mix to deal with the losses of Kevin Jones (19.9 points, 10.9 rebounds) and Darryl “Truck” Bryant (16.9 points) from last year’s squad. Sophomore point guard Juwan Staten (Dayton) will run the offense and 6-foot-10, 250-pound junior center Aaric Murray (La Salle) brings good size to pair with 6-foot-9, 260-pound holdover Deniz Kilicli (10.7 points, 5.3 rebounds). The third transfer is senior swingman Matt Humphrey (Boston College). West Virginia hopes to see improvement from sophomore guard Jabarie Hinds, who averaged 7.4 points last season but shot just 41.9 percent.

ABOUT GONZAGA (1-0): The Bulldogs were hardly challenged by Southern Utah in their opener. Gonzaga forced 28 turnovers and received a big effort from 7-foot-1, 305-pound Polish import Przemek Karnowski, who scored 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting in his college debut. “He’s got good feet,” Few said. “He’s getting there. It’s going to be a week-by-week process.” Junior guard Guy Landry Edi scored 16 points and junior center Sam Dower added 15 as six players scored in double figures.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Bulldogs are 6-0 ATS in their last six home games.
                      * Under is 4-0 in Mountaineers’ last four road games.
                      * Under is 4-1 in Mountaineers’ last five Monday games.
                      * Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in their last four non-conference games.

                      TIP-INS:

                      1. The NCAA tournament matchup marks the only previous time the two programs have met, but Huggins coached against the Zags twice when he was at Cincinnati.
                      2. Gonzaga has a streak of 15 consecutive 20-win seasons.
                      3. West Virginia is opening on the road for the first time since winning at James Madison to start the 2003-04 season.
