Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday......

    13) Texas A&M wins 29-24 at Alabama, a shocking result, but we're seeing how college teams cannot get up emotionally for big games in consecutive weeks. Look up some schedules from 15-20 years ago; before the big games, teams had the week before off, to gear up. Can't do that now.

    12) I'm not going to say much about the butchered replay call in the Penn State-Nebraska game, because it cost me my pick this week and I'm bitter about it, but I'll say this; the name and picture of the replay offical has to be put on TV before every game, so these people, whoever they are, know they are accountable for their decisions.

That call was: best case: missed badly/worst case: corrupt as hell. Thats all I'm going to say about it, but I hope that replay official got fired.

    11) If you had Army +18 Saturday, skip this item; they were tied 7-7 with less than 11:00 left at Rutgers, were down 21-7 in the last minute, but the backup QB fumbled, and a defender ran 73 yards for the covering TD with a miserable 0:40 left. Sometimes life ain't fair.

    10) 18 players have left the Washington State program since the start of the season, as Mike Leach weeds out guys he doesn't want around. State had an awful first half against UCLA, trailing 37-7, but they put on an impressive rally, falling short 44-36 late Saturday night in Pullman.

Leach is going to win at Wazzu, but its going to take another year or two.

    9) West Virginia lost its last four games, allowing 198 points (49.5 ppg) in the four games. Some teams appear not to care about defense at all.

    8) Congrats to Lock Haven State, which beat Cheyney State 15-7, ending a 52-game losing streak. No one deserves to lose for five straight years.

    7) Bad news for NBA's Rockets: Head coach Kevin McHale is taking an indefinite leave of absence to deal with a family matter.

Good news: Former Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson is interim head coach, and now he can text players as much as he wants; its legal in NBA. He texted a little too much for the NCAA's liking when he was at Oklahoma and Indiana, as he broke numerous NCAA recruiting rules.

    6) Miami lost 41-40 at Virginia on a TD with 0:06 left, the fourth Hurricane game this year where the losing side scored 32+ points. Miami had won the previous three of those games. A terrible pass interference call kept the winning Virginia drive alive.

    5) Northwestern coughed up a 24-14 lead with 17:00 left, as Michigan tied game after a ridiculous jump ball completion that led to the tying FG in last :05. In OT, the Wolverines won 38-31, a bitter loss for the Wildcats, who are 7-3 but could just as easily be 10-0.

    4) Texas Tech escaped with a 41-34 OT win over lowly Kansas, but not before Red Raider coach Tommy Tuberville was seen on TV slapping an assistant coach in the head, knocking his hat askew. Weird thing to see, football is an emotional game, but its usually asistants who are emotional, not the head coach.

    3) Two of the best coaching jobs in America are being down out west in the Mountain West, where Fresno State/San Diego State are both 8-3. Tim DeRuyter is a first-year coach at Fresno, while Rocky Long has Aztecs in bowl contention despite losing his QB and star RB from LY. Well done.

    2) Biggest upsets of the week: 16-point underdog UMass won 22-14 at Akron, and 16-point dog Florida Atlantic won 37-28 at Western Kentucky.

    1) Florida trailed UL-Lafayette 20-13 late in game, tied it with 1:42 left, then blocked a ULL punt and ran it in for a TD with 0:02 left, stunning the Ragin' Cajuns 27-20. Gators looked awful, but Sun Belt teams have spunk.

      NASCAR betting: Advocare 500 preview

It isn’t over, but NASCAR's penultimate race in the 2012 season could be the event where Jimmie Johnson clinches his sixth NASCAR title.

Johnson is in control as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday’s Advocare 500. With a seven-point lead, Johnson knows it’s his Chase to win, or lose.

“It’s a small amount of control, but we’re definitely in control,” Johnson told reporters. “We don’t have to catch any or make up any points. Seven points is nothing to feel comfortable about and to relax on. We’re still going to go into Phoenix and act as if we’re behind and go in there to try to sit on the pole and win the race again.”

Johnson has a pretty good shot at another win Sunday. He leads all active drivers with four wins at Phoenix and has earned more points in the last five races at Phoenix than any other driver. Johnson also has the highest average finish and the highest driver rating among the Top 12 drivers.

Perhaps the only hope the rest of the field has is that Johnson’s last victory at Phoenix came in 2009. But, in the last five races Johnson has finished fifth or better in four events.

Brad Keselowski has continued to not only surprise, but defy all the odds. At tracks where his stats are lacking, BK has stepped up and finished strong. Combine that with two wins in the Chase and Keselowski remains a strong contender for the title. Keselowski’s best finish at Phoenix came this past spring when he came home fifth; prior to that his finishes were outside the top 15. However as he has shown during the Chase, past numbers mean nothing. Keselowski needs to be somewhat careful though. Should Johnson score a third Chase victory and lead the most laps and Keselowski suffer a disaster that leaves him with a finishing position worse than 37th, the Chase will be over. Given the fact that Keselowski’s worst finish of the season is a 36th though the likelihood that the Chase will be decided this weekend is very small.

“Our mindset heading into Phoenix is exactly the same as it was going into Texas,” Keselowski said. “If we keep running the way we are running, I like our chances. Now, there are some things that I may need to place more focus on over the next two races, especially on pit road. Those are things that are in my control and I will take those necessary steps.”

Clint Bowyer has a very tall order Sunday; if Johnson should win Sunday, Bowyer must finish eighth or better to have a shot at the title heading to Homestead. That might actually be tough for Bowyer. In his last five races here his best finish was a ninth place and that was five races ago. Since then he has finished outside the top 20 in three races, including a 30th place in the spring. Bowyer no longer controls his own destiny, he has to hope for poor finishes from the frontrunners to remain in the Chase.

“We certainly don’t want to wish bad luck on anybody, but for us to be able to close the gap in this deal it’s going to take some good performances by us and some bad luck from both of the other two guys in front of us, “Bowyer said. “That isn’t highly likely, but we’ll do our part to keep trying to be competitive. Even if we aren’t able to close the deal and get the big one at the end it’d be nice to win one of these last two. We’ll be shooting for that.”

Kasey Kahne rolls into Phoenix as the defending winner of this race. That win however came with his old team Red Bull Racing. When he returned here this past spring in his new Hendrick Motorsports ride, bad luck left him with a 34th place finish. Prior to the spring race he has one top 10 finish spilt by two other runs outside the top 20 in addition to his lone win.

Matt Kenseth has made some great strides in the Chase to date. He moved from the bottom of the standings to fifth overall. But could this be the week he runs out of steam? Kenseth did win the pole for this race last year, but in the last five races here Kenseth finished outside the top 10 in three of those, including crashing out last fall. He finished 13th in the spring and may have risen through the ranks as high as he will in 2012.

Jeff Gordon has also risen through the ranks in the last few weeks. Overall at Phoenix Gordon has two wins, 10 top fives, 19 top tens and three poles. One of those wins came in the spring race here last season. He was 32nd in this race last year but a solid eighth in the spring. Gordon won’t win the title this season, but could win Sunday and take a shot and moving into the top five in the Chase.

Denny Hamlin has fallen back in the Chase in the last few races. However, this could be the week he finds some redemption. He won here in the spring and has led the most laps among the Chase field at Phoenix in the last five races. A season sweep here could put a smile back on Hamlin’s face and that could just happen come Sunday.

Tony Stewart used to be a strong contender here. In the last five races however, Stewart has finished outside the top 15 in three outings. He was 22nd here in the spring but third in this race last season so there is a bit of hope.

Martin Truex Jr. has one top ten finish in the last five races at Phoenix. He finished seventh in the spring but don’t expect him to improve on that Sunday. He could score another top ten but won’t contend for the win.

Greg Biffle has two top five finishes in the last five races here. He was third in the spring but 13th in this race last year. However, if he can duplicate the speed he had in March he could be in the mix for the win Sunday. Given his struggles in the last few races though, don’t look for it.

Kevin Harvick has had a forgettable Chase. But this could be the week he gets back some of the ground he’s lost. Harvick actually has a pretty decent record in the last five races here; he was second in the spring and led 88 laps. He was 19th in this race last year but fourth last spring. If he is on his game Sunday Harvick could be the surprise of the day.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been mostly silent since his return from injured status. At Phoenix in the last five races, he has just one top ten finish. He was 14th in the spring and 24th in this race last year. Don’t expect to hear much from him Sunday.

      Non-Chasers

      Ryan Newman
is the strongest driver among those not in the Chase field at Phoenix. Although he struggled here in the spring, in the four races prior to that he has top five finishes in each, including a win. Don’t be surprised if Newman is celebrating in victory lane Sunday.

Carl Edwards is in desperation mode. After going winless all season and missing the Chase, Edwards is desperate for a win. In the last five races at Phoenix, he has back to back poles and a win. He finished 17th in the spring but was second in this race last season. If he can bring it this week, Edwards could break his winless streak on Sunday.

Kyle Busch finished just behind Johnson and Keselowski here in the spring, coming home sixth. He’s out of the Chase but still a viable contender. He lost an engine in this race last fall and finished a disappointing 36th. However, in the last five races, he has three top ten’s including a second last spring. If he can avoid the gremlins that have plagued the team in the last few races and with the momentum of a third place last week in Texas, Busch could spoil the Chase party Sunday.

      Bottom line

The race has been won from a top-10 starting position in 17 of 32 events. Matt Kenseth won the 2002 race from the 28th-place starting position, the furthest back an active race winner has started.

CFL betting preview: Playoff time north of the border
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s playoff time in the CFL and six teams are dreaming of the potential postseason run that could end at the 100th Grey Cup. The Edmonton Eskimos travel to Toronto to take on the Argonauts in the Eastern Conference Semifinal on Sunday afternoon, while the Saskatchewan Roughriders head to Calgary for their Western Conference Semifinal showdown.

        Edmonton at Toronto (-3.5, 50.5)

Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed announced Thursday that veteran QB Kerry Joseph will start and Matt Nichols will be his backup. Reed is hoping Joseph can relive his playoff run in 2007 when he led the Roughriders to the Grey Cup and was named MVP in the game played in Toronto. There have been plenty of distractions off the field for the Eskimos ahead of the Eastern semifinal due the firing of general manager Eric Tillman this week.

Toronto’s success hinges on the red-hot arm of QB Ricky Ray. The former Eskimo has completed 70 percent of his passes for 688 yards and eight touchdowns since taking three games off to rehab a sore knee. The veteran passer is 8-4 all-time in the postseason, but is 0-2 against his former club this campaign.

Edmonton is 4-1 ATS in its last five meetings with Toronto and has covered in its last four division semifinal games.

        Saskatchewan at Calgary (-5.5, 51.5)

With just a 3-6 record on the road in 2012, Saskatchewan is going up against a Calgary squad that has won five in a row at home. It's going to be cold (around -15 Celsius with the wind chill) with clear skies and 10 mph winds at McMahon Stadium. That means ball control will be important - and the Riders lead the league in time of possession at 32:06, thanks to a potent rushing attack led by Kory Sheets.

Calgary has lost three straight playoff games, and the last four times these teams have met in the playoffs, the Riders prevailed. Stamps coach John Hufnagel announced Tuesday that “he is playing a hunch” by naming Drew Tate the starter at QB over veteran Kevin Glenn. Tate has battled with a shoulder injury for the majority of the season and has seen limited game action since returning on Oct. 26, tossing only 22 passes. Glenn was statistically the fourth-best QB in the league this season and had the second-highest completion percentage (66.7).

These teams met three times during the regular season, with Calgary taking two of those contests. However, the most recent encounter in late September went in favor of the Riders, 30-25. The Roughriders are 4-0 ATS in their last four playoff road games, while the Stamps are 0-4 ATS in their last four playoff tilts.

              Armadillo's Write-Up

              Sunday, November 11

-- Villanova/Marshall both won openers by big scores over cupcakes, though Villanova led by only 5 at half in its game; Wildcats have three starters back from LY and highly touted freshman PG. Marshall is #2 pick in C-USA, with three starters back from a 21-14 team.
-- Purdue lost at home to Bucknell Friday; Hofstra lost at Monmouth by 29, a horrendous loss. Still lot of hurricane-related problems on Long Island, so Hofstra's routine has been disrupted. Purdue is young and may not have a viable option at PG, never a good thing.
-- Ill-Chicago has 4 starters back from LY's 8-22 team, plus they get the son of the fired Eastern Illinois coach as a transfer (10 ppg LY), so that helps. Cal-Riverside turned ball over 24 times in 91-59 loss at DePaul Friday- they've lost four starters from LY's 14-17 team.
-- Richard Pitino is FIU's new coach, but Panthers lost all five starters from LY's 8-21 team, are starting from scratch. Boston College has four starters back from 9-22/4-12 team; they're picked #10 in 12-team ACC.

-- North Carolina lost 4 starters from LY's 32-6/14-2 team; Tar Heels won opener by 17 over Gardner-Webb. UNC is picked #3 in ACC, are depending on freshman PG. Florida Atlantic lost 3 starters from 11-19 team (7-9 in Sun Belt).
-- Duquesne lost its opener Friday at Albany; Georgetown was down 4 at half to Florida on battleship in Jacksonville- game got called due to it being too slippery to continue. Hoyas lost 3 starters from 24-9/12-6 club. Owls has three starters back from LY's 16-15 team.
-- Syracuse lost four key guys from LY's 34-3/17-1 team; they'll depend on 2-3 zone to stay in games while they improve on offense. This game is on battleship, outdoors. San Diego State has 4 starters back from LY's 26-8 team and added couple talented transfers.
-- Loyola Marymount beat stiff team Friday; they've got 3 starters back from 21-13/11-5 team, are picked #4 in WCC. Larry Brown makes his SMU debut here; he ran off the old PG, the new PG never reported to school, so the #2 guard the last three years is this year's PG. Great.
-- New Mexico State is young/talented; they lost 3 starters from 26-10 team (10-4 in WAC) and made NCAAs, but it takes time to mesh talent together. Oregon State shot 57% from floor, 13-24 from arc in 102-83 win over Niagara (-13.5) in its opener Friday night.

-- Louisville is very good, so good one of its subs gave back scholarship so another guy could be signed- they're picked to win Big East. One of Pitino's former aides (Masiello) has all 5 starters back from LY's 21-13 team at Manhattan; Jaspers are picked second in MAAC.
-- UL-Lafayette lost 3 starters from 16-16/10-6 team; Ragin' Cajuns are inexperienced at guard- they're picked in middle of Sun Belt. Oakland has 3 starters back plus a Providence transfer eligible; they were 20-16 LY, 11-7 in Summit- they're picked 3rd in Summit this year.
-- Washington is team whose better players leave school too early; they lot 3 starters from LY's 24-11/14-4 team that seemed like it should've been better. Loyola Md whacked Binghamton in its opener; they've got four starters back from LY's 24-9/13-5 team and is picked to win MAAC in their last year in league before heading off for Patriot League.
-- Seattle won 85-73 at Montana State LY; Redhawks lost 3 starters from 12-15 team- this is their first year in WAC after being independent before that. Montana State was 12-17/7-9 LY; they lost couple of guys unexpectledly, as usual, which is why they struggle.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Hottest ATS team

Minnesota Timberwolves (4-2 SU, 5-1 ATS)

The T-Wolves are being discounted most nights thanks to missing superstars Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. Those extra points on the spread have helped Minnesota backers cash in four straight games. Andrei Kirilenko is having a career resurgence with the Timberwolves and has been the glue keeping the team above together, leading in assists, rebounds, field goals percentage and most defensive stats as well. Minnesota is at Dallas Monday before coming home for three straight – Charlotte, Golden State, Denver.

                          Coldest ATS team

Chicago Bulls (4-2 SU, 1-5 ATS)

The Bulls went 0-4 ATS this past week, most recently blowing a cover in an 87-80 win over Minnesota. Chicago needed 18 points from Nate Robinson just to get the victory after PG Kirk Hinrich left with a hip injury, and Carlos Boozer mustered only two points. The Bulls backcourt is already dangerously thin without Derrick Rose, and now must lean on the erratic Robinson for Monday’s home tilt with Boston and an upcoming five-game road trip - AKA “The Circus Trip” - with the circus setting up camp in the Windy City for the next two weeks.

                          Hottest over bet

                          Cleveland Cavaliers (2-4 SU, 5-1 over/under)

The Cavaliers are in the midst of a six-game road swing, having played over the total in the first four stops on that run. Cleveland’s defense has allowed opponents to average 103 points on 50 percent shooting during that span, including 107 points to the Phoenix Suns, who came back from 12 points down late in the game Friday night. The Cavs have relied heavily on their starters, with head coach Byron Scott dipping just four deep – only two reserves getting serious time – down the bench. The tank could already be running low, just in time for a tough stretch that sees Cleveland at Oklahoma City, at Brooklyn, home to Dallas, and at Philadelphia.

                          Hottest under bet

                          Indiana Pacers (3-4 SU, 2-5 over/under)

The Pacers were already without the firepower of SF Danny Granger, and will lack that punch for the next three months. Indiana is scrambling to make up that offense, averaging just 90.4 points a night – 27th in the NBA. The Pacers scored only 89 points in a close win over the Washington Wizards Saturday, turning to their defense to get the job done. Indiana has remained one of the stingiest teams in the league, allowing foes an average of only 92.4 points. It faces Toronto, Milwaukee, Dallas and New York this week.

                          Scouting the schedule

-- As mentioned above, the Bulls head out on their annual “Circus Trip” this week. The extended road swing has been a thorn in the franchise's side for many years. Chicago has gone 8-12 SU on its last three “Circus Trips” (didn’t have one last season with the lockout) but has posted a 12-8 ATS mark, including a 6-1 ATS record in 2010, in those games.

-- Miami has kept the ball rolling after its NBA Championship last season. The Heat are off to a 5-1 start (4-2 ATS) with four of those five wins coming in South Beach. The reigning champs get their first test of the season in the shape of a six-game road trip, which opened with a win in Atlanta Friday. LeBron and Co. head to Memphis, Houston, Los Angeles (Clippers), Denver and Phoenix, playing five games in seven nights. Dwyane Wade is expected to return for those contests after missing time with an illness.

-- The Lakers hope a coaching change and an extended home stand can right the ship after a slow start to the schedule. Los Angeles, which just fired head coach Mike Brown, stays in the Staples Center for five games – one of which could be a homecoming for Phil Jackson, who is reportedly close to rejoining the team. The Lakers were a great home team last season, going 26-7 SU, and there may be some value with them until the coaching mess is sorted out. They host Sacramento, San Antonio, Phoenix, Houston and Brooklyn.

NBA Game of the Day: Heat at Grizzlies
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Memphis Grizzlies (2, 194.5)

The Memphis Grizzlies have quietly won four straight games in convincing fashion while looking strong on the defensive end. The Grizzlies will get their biggest challenge to that defense on Sunday, when the reigning champion Miami Heat visit. The Heat are riding their own four-game winning streak and lead the NBA in scoring with an average of 107.5 points. Miami will be making its second stop on a six-game road trip.

Memphis could be catching the Heat at the right time, as Dwyane Wade is battling illness and LeBron James is dealing with a balky right knee. James still nearly recorded a triple-double in a win on Friday, with Wade back at the hotel. The Grizzlies have the size to overwhelm Miami on the interior and have Tony Allen on the outside to battle James. Memphis has won by an average of 11.3 points during its winning streak and has allowed only one of its five opponents to reach the century mark.

TV: 6:00 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Miami), SportSouth (Memphis)

ABOUT THE HEAT (5-1): Wade is dealing with a nasty cold that kept him away from his teammates on Friday. James banged knees with Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith but stayed in the game, finishing with 21 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. The Heat have picked up right where they left off last season and might even be more efficient offensively, with Chris Bosh spending more time in the low post and Ray Allen leading the second unit. Allen is averaging 14.7 points while shooting 59.3 percent from beyond the arc.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (4-1): Memphis suffered a season-opening loss at the Los Angeles Clippers but has been a different team in the last four games, locking down defensively and spreading out the scoring. Zach Randolph is leading the league in rebounding at 15.0 and has recorded at least 15 points and 13 boards in each of the first five games. Allen proved himself as a defensive stopper once again on Friday, holding Houston Rockets guard and NBA leading scorer James Harden to 18 points on 4-of-18 shooting in a 93-85 triumph.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Miami is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games following a win.
                            * Grizzlies are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.
                            * Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                            * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Memphis.

                            BUZZER BEATERS:

                            1. James and Wade both practiced on Saturday and expect to play Sunday. James has averaged 27.3 points in 17 career games against the Grizzlies.

                            2. Memphis took the lone meeting last season, 97-82, in Miami behind 14 points and 14 rebounds from Randolph.

                            3. Grizzlies F Rudy Gay is shooting just 14.3 percent (2 of 14) from 3-point range.
