    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some notes from Friday night's college hoop action........

-- Trevor Lacey banged home a 3 at the buzzer, Alabama holds off gritty South Dakota State 70-67. We'll see the Jackrabbits in March.

-- Florida State beat South Alabama 80-39 LY; this year? Not so much, as the Jaguars upset FSU in Tallahassee, 76-71, as 14-point underdogs. USA was 0-24 from the arc in LY's game, 9-15 last night.

-- Bad night for hoop on battleships; they cancelled Ohio St-Marquette, and Florida-Georgetown was called off at half. Moisture on the court.

-- George Mason upset Virginia, big game in that state; Patriots better enjoy it, Virginia will probably never play them again.

-- Bucknell 70, Purdue 65. Uh-oh. Bad start for the Boilermakers.

-- UCLA's star recruit, Shabazz Muhammad, is ineligible, which isn't good for the youthful Bruins, who pummeled Indiana State anyway in opening of refurbished Pauley Pavilion. $136M worth of refurbishing.

    *********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) Federal authorities dropped their investigation of former Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine this week, meaning the school canned him for no reason, other than the bogus charges brought by his shady accusers embarrassed the school.

Where does Fine go to get his life back? His job? His good name? His reputation? The money he’s lost? Media doesn't seem quite so interested about this as they did about crucifying the guy last year.

    12) Damn, Mike Brown lasted five games this season before the Lakers pulled the plug on him. Coaching an NBA team is crazy, has to be, but its also crazy money, while it lasts. Brown has been canned from teams that had Lebron James and Kobe Bryant on them.

Where does he go from here? He will get paid another $11M from the Lakers; maybe he should go have lunch with Jason Bay, who just got $21M to walk away from the Mets.

    11) Saints’ owner Tom Benson bought the NBA’s Hornets for $338M, presumably to keep them in New Orleans, but there were tons of empty seats at their game with Philly this week, not a good sign.

Benson could make a pretty penny selling the team to a group that would move the team to Seattle, where they supported the Sonics so well for many years, but had the team stolen from them by commissioner Stern.

    10) Former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, banned from ESPN’s NBA pre/postgame shows by Stern, has a gig doing college games on NBC College Sports. If he’s half as good as his brother Jeff, the network got itself a steal.

    9) People are weird sometimes. Some collector recently paid $48,000 for some of John Lennon’s hair; guy’s been dead since 1980. Go figure.

    8) Why did Colorado Rockies interview Jason Giambi for their manager’s job? Would they hire a guy who was still an active player to be their skipper, or did they just want to pick his brain?

They wound up hiring Walt Weiss, who has a decent amount of off-field experience since his playing days ended, but he coached his son’s high school team LY. Don’t see many high school coaches jumping straight to the big leagues.

    7) Colts are getting good production out of speedy WR Donnie Avery, who the Rams drafted ahead of DeSean Jackson when he came out of college (Houston). Avery did next to nothing for the Rams, except get hurt a lot and do a TD dance in Washington when the Rams were down 38-10. That went over well.

    6) Why was Florida’s last SEC game November 3rd? They finish with UL-Lafayette, a I-AA team and Florida State. Very unusual.

    5) Did you know it took 14 years to carve out Mt Rushmore?

    4) As a result of injuries to his defense that made the unit much younger, Ravens’ DC Dean Pees has moved to the press box during games, which allows him to see more and better organize his players. Its an interesting aspect of football coaching, how some coaches sit up in the box, while others are with the players on the sidelines, where they can’t see the game nearly as well.

    3) Not sure if this is legal, but if I managed a baseball team, I’d have a coach upstairs, looking things over away from the dugout, the way they do in football, and I’d call him up now and then for input.

    2) USC plays rivals UCLA/Notre Dame on consecutive Saturdays, then would have the Pac-12 title game after that, if they qualified; that kind of scheduling has to change, its just doesn’t help the Trojans at all. USC has always played its home game with Notre Dame in late November; when they visit South Bend, its been in October. Moving the UCLA game to earlier in the season (like Cal-Stanford) makes more sense.

    1) Speaking of the Trojans, supposedly a student manager at USC “acted on his own” and deflated several footballs, so that Matt Barkley could get a better grip on them and pass better. The manager was fired when this all became public.

I put myself through college as the student manager of a college basketball team, so I have an idea of how all this works and while anything in this crazy world is possible, I’m saying it is highly doubtful that this kid did anything like that without some knowledge/request/order with/from a USC coach/player.

I’m just saying, why would he do this on his own? It makes zero sense. That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

      NASCAR betting: Advocare 500 preview

It isn’t over, but NASCAR's penultimate race in the 2012 season could be the event where Jimmie Johnson clinches his sixth NASCAR title.

Johnson is in control as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday’s Advocare 500. With a seven-point lead, Johnson knows it’s his Chase to win, or lose.

“It’s a small amount of control, but we’re definitely in control,” Johnson told reporters. “We don’t have to catch any or make up any points. Seven points is nothing to feel comfortable about and to relax on. We’re still going to go into Phoenix and act as if we’re behind and go in there to try to sit on the pole and win the race again.”

Johnson has a pretty good shot at another win Sunday. He leads all active drivers with four wins at Phoenix and has earned more points in the last five races at Phoenix than any other driver. Johnson also has the highest average finish and the highest driver rating among the Top 12 drivers.

Perhaps the only hope the rest of the field has is that Johnson’s last victory at Phoenix came in 2009. But, in the last five races Johnson has finished fifth or better in four events.

Brad Keselowski has continued to not only surprise, but defy all the odds. At tracks where his stats are lacking, BK has stepped up and finished strong. Combine that with two wins in the Chase and Keselowski remains a strong contender for the title. Keselowski’s best finish at Phoenix came this past spring when he came home fifth; prior to that his finishes were outside the top 15. However as he has shown during the Chase, past numbers mean nothing. Keselowski needs to be somewhat careful though. Should Johnson score a third Chase victory and lead the most laps and Keselowski suffer a disaster that leaves him with a finishing position worse than 37th, the Chase will be over. Given the fact that Keselowski’s worst finish of the season is a 36th though the likelihood that the Chase will be decided this weekend is very small.

“Our mindset heading into Phoenix is exactly the same as it was going into Texas,” Keselowski said. “If we keep running the way we are running, I like our chances. Now, there are some things that I may need to place more focus on over the next two races, especially on pit road. Those are things that are in my control and I will take those necessary steps.”

Clint Bowyer has a very tall order Sunday; if Johnson should win Sunday, Bowyer must finish eighth or better to have a shot at the title heading to Homestead. That might actually be tough for Bowyer. In his last five races here his best finish was a ninth place and that was five races ago. Since then he has finished outside the top 20 in three races, including a 30th place in the spring. Bowyer no longer controls his own destiny, he has to hope for poor finishes from the frontrunners to remain in the Chase.

“We certainly don’t want to wish bad luck on anybody, but for us to be able to close the gap in this deal it’s going to take some good performances by us and some bad luck from both of the other two guys in front of us, “Bowyer said. “That isn’t highly likely, but we’ll do our part to keep trying to be competitive. Even if we aren’t able to close the deal and get the big one at the end it’d be nice to win one of these last two. We’ll be shooting for that.”

Kasey Kahne rolls into Phoenix as the defending winner of this race. That win however came with his old team Red Bull Racing. When he returned here this past spring in his new Hendrick Motorsports ride, bad luck left him with a 34th place finish. Prior to the spring race he has one top 10 finish spilt by two other runs outside the top 20 in addition to his lone win.

Matt Kenseth has made some great strides in the Chase to date. He moved from the bottom of the standings to fifth overall. But could this be the week he runs out of steam? Kenseth did win the pole for this race last year, but in the last five races here Kenseth finished outside the top 10 in three of those, including crashing out last fall. He finished 13th in the spring and may have risen through the ranks as high as he will in 2012.

Jeff Gordon has also risen through the ranks in the last few weeks. Overall at Phoenix Gordon has two wins, 10 top fives, 19 top tens and three poles. One of those wins came in the spring race here last season. He was 32nd in this race last year but a solid eighth in the spring. Gordon won’t win the title this season, but could win Sunday and take a shot and moving into the top five in the Chase.

Denny Hamlin has fallen back in the Chase in the last few races. However, this could be the week he finds some redemption. He won here in the spring and has led the most laps among the Chase field at Phoenix in the last five races. A season sweep here could put a smile back on Hamlin’s face and that could just happen come Sunday.

Tony Stewart used to be a strong contender here. In the last five races however, Stewart has finished outside the top 15 in three outings. He was 22nd here in the spring but third in this race last season so there is a bit of hope.

Martin Truex Jr. has one top ten finish in the last five races at Phoenix. He finished seventh in the spring but don’t expect him to improve on that Sunday. He could score another top ten but won’t contend for the win.

Greg Biffle has two top five finishes in the last five races here. He was third in the spring but 13th in this race last year. However, if he can duplicate the speed he had in March he could be in the mix for the win Sunday. Given his struggles in the last few races though, don’t look for it.

Kevin Harvick has had a forgettable Chase. But this could be the week he gets back some of the ground he’s lost. Harvick actually has a pretty decent record in the last five races here; he was second in the spring and led 88 laps. He was 19th in this race last year but fourth last spring. If he is on his game Sunday Harvick could be the surprise of the day.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been mostly silent since his return from injured status. At Phoenix in the last five races, he has just one top ten finish. He was 14th in the spring and 24th in this race last year. Don’t expect to hear much from him Sunday.

      Non-Chasers

      Ryan Newman
is the strongest driver among those not in the Chase field at Phoenix. Although he struggled here in the spring, in the four races prior to that he has top five finishes in each, including a win. Don’t be surprised if Newman is celebrating in victory lane Sunday.

Carl Edwards is in desperation mode. After going winless all season and missing the Chase, Edwards is desperate for a win. In the last five races at Phoenix, he has back to back poles and a win. He finished 17th in the spring but was second in this race last season. If he can bring it this week, Edwards could break his winless streak on Sunday.

Kyle Busch finished just behind Johnson and Keselowski here in the spring, coming home sixth. He’s out of the Chase but still a viable contender. He lost an engine in this race last fall and finished a disappointing 36th. However, in the last five races, he has three top ten’s including a second last spring. If he can avoid the gremlins that have plagued the team in the last few races and with the momentum of a third place last week in Texas, Busch could spoil the Chase party Sunday.

      Bottom line

The race has been won from a top-10 starting position in 17 of 32 events. Matt Kenseth won the 2002 race from the 28th-place starting position, the furthest back an active race winner has started.

                  Saturday, November 10

It is very, very early; teams started practicing four weeks ago, have to look carefully for a bargain right now-- we're trying to gather knowledge as the season starts.
Here are some notes on tonight's college basketball games..........

-- Buffalo lost 61-53 at Princeton LY; Bulls have three starters from a 20-10/12-4 team, but are picked in middle of MAC pack. Princeton has four starters back from 20-12/10-4 team; they're picked to win the Ivy. Two conferences were ranked next to each other LY.

-- Ohio U. won 72-54 at Portland LY; Bobcats have all its players back from 29-8/11-5 team, but have new coach in former Kent State/TCU coach Christian, who bolted TCU before they got their brains beat in in the Big X. Portland was 7-24 LY, is still rebuilding.

-- Western Michigan is rebuilding with 8 freshmen after a 12-20 season that was supposed to be much better; Broncos' only returning starter had two separated shoulders LY. Cornell has 3 starters back from 12-16 team (7-7 in Ivy); they're picked 4th in Ivy this year.

-- LaSalle lost 70-66 at Delaware LY, its only loss in an 11-game stretch; Explorers have four starters back from 21-13/9-7 team that faded down stretch. Delaware has all five starters back from 18-14/12-6 team that got hot late and wound up 5th in CAA.

-- George Washington lost 10 of last 12 games in Lonergan's first year; three of his five recruits are foreigners. Youngstown State has 3 starters back from 16-15/10-8 team, Slocum's first winning year in seven years coaching the Penguins.

-- Dayton has 3 starters back from 20-13/9-7 team, plus they've got two transfers (LSU/Georgetown) eligible and a senior PG. They're picked #7 in the Atlantic 16 (yes, 16!!!). Arkansas State has experienced guards who can shoot, but not much else (14-20/6-10 in Sun Belt LY).

-- Central Florida is in trouble with NCAA, but when star Clanton said he'd come back for his senior year, things brightened. Knights have three starters back from 22-11/10-6 team. South Florida lost 3 starters from a 22-14/12-6 team that probably saved Stan Heath's job.

-- Western Kentucky has 4 starters back from 16-19/7-9 team that really got better once interim guy took over after coach got fired; Hilltoppers are picked 3rd in their half of Sun Belt. Southern Miss has a new coach and 2 starters back from 25-9 team that got Eustachy Colorado St job.

-- Evansville has three starters back from 16-16/9-9 team lost by 21 to Indiana, 40 to North Carolina in its high profile games. Notre Dame has 4 starters back from 22-12/13-5 team that faded down stretch, losing four of its last six games.

-- Nevada lost couple big bodies up front from 28-7/13-1 team that won 16 games in a row at one point LY; Wolf Pack has really good guards. Cal-Irvine has all five starters back from 12-20/6-10 team that went 7-7 in its last 14 games. This is biggest team in Big West.

-- Legalization of marijuana came year or two late for Washington State, after few of its players had run-ins with law and are now gone; Coogs crushed Eastern Washington 75-49 LY, when they were 19-18/7-11 in Pac-12. Eagles lost three starters from 15-17/8-8 team.

-- Oregon won by 8-9 points in its two games vs Big Sky teams LY, as improved Ducks went 24-10/13-5 under proven winner Altman- they've got two starters back this year. Northern Arizona has new coach after a 5-24 debacle; he is trying to rebuild with HS kids, not JC players.

-- Utah State won 75-62 at Idaho State LY; Aggies have 3 starters back from disappointing 21-16/8-6 team that is headed to MWC after this one last year in WAC. Bengals have new coach and 3 new starters after LY's 9-21/7-9 season that improved once the old coach got fired.
