    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Knicks waxed Philly by 16, are now 30-63 (47.6%) behind the arc in their two games. Unfortunately, they have to go on the road eventually.

-- Lakers took some frustrations out on Detroit, pounding the Pistons by 29 for their first win in four tries this season.

-- Ernie Els couldn't get an invite to the Masters last year, but a 14-year old kid from China gets an invite, because golf's powers-that-be are trying to suck as much money as they can out of Asia.

-- If that kid gets in, every guy who wins a PGA Tour event should get in the Masters, too. Right now, they don't.

-- Has anyone noticed that Louisville's football team is 9-0?

-- College basketball games start this Friday; we like that!!!!

    *******

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

    13) There will be articles written on how the Giants are struggling and can they regain last year's championship swagger, but think about it, a lot of the players had their homes flooded this week-- you expected them to play a strong game this week?

Last year's championship team was 7-7 at one point, by the way; this is a better team, just remains to be seen if they'll get hot at the right time.

    12) People continue to be unimpressed by the 8-0 Falcons, which is the best thing for the 8-0 Falcons. Less scrutiny, less pressure, easier to win.

    11) Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano seems like kind of a jerk, but he's done a good job with this year's Buccaneers, who had 278 rushing yards, 237 passing in a wild 42-32 win at Oakland. Bucs lost their last ten games LY, are now 4-4 this year.

Funny thing is, Schiano wouldn't let his QB take a knee at the end until the last play, when they took a knee out of the shotgun, not with the QB under center. Schiano had his players take a shot at Eli Manning earlier this year when the Giants were taking a knee; was he concerned with reprisal?

    10) Six teams were +2 or better in turnovers this week; all six won, all six covered, with Tampa Bay the only underdog of the six. Four of those six teams had a field position advantage of 10+ yards; those four, along with Steelers (+12) and Packers (+15)-- they all covered, too.

Problem is, you can't handicap when turnovers will happen. When Chicago stops forcing turnovers, thats when they'll get upset.

    9) Chicago Bears scored six TDs Sunday; one on a blocked punt, one by the defense, and four by the offense, on drives of 8-16-65-2 yards.

    8) Seattle paid $13M to sign Packers' backup QB Matt Flynn, but he has no chance of playing, now that Russell Wilson seems entrenched as the Seahawks' starter; shouldn't they trade Flynn to a team that really needs a QB, say.....the Chiefs or Jaguars?

They really can't trade him to Arizona, since they're a division rival, but the Cardinals really need a quarterback, too.

    7) Speaking of which, Jets needed to trade Tim Tebow to Jacksonville. It would liberate Mark Sanchez from excessive scrutiny, it would sell a lot of tickets in northern Florida, and it would just make sense.

    6) Denver is 5-3. Indianapolis is 5-3; how weird would it be if the Colts and Denver met in a playoff game in January?

    5) If you didn't see Colts' coach Chuck Pagano address his team after their game Sunday, check it out here. Very emotional, very real. Our thoughts and prayers are with the coach, who is fighting a treatable form of leukemia.

    4) Redskins' biggest problem with Robert Griffin III is going to be keeping him in one piece; he's terrific, but he takes too many big hits.

'3) NFC teams were 3-1 against the AFC Sunday, with Steelers the only AFC team to win. Lions-Bears-Bucs all posted fairly easy wins. So far in 2012, NFC teams are 23-12 against the AFC.

    2) Home teams are 6-7 vs spread this week, favorites 9-4, over 7-6-1; there were 107 explosive plays (4.12 per team). Teams are averaging 4.77 points per red zone drive this week, and that includes the Bills and Cowboys.

    1) Is there a more overrated sports franchise than the Cowboys? TV still treats them like they're the best team in the NFL. Truth is, since '97, they're 1-6 in playoff games. Thats fifteen years.

Everyone think my Rams are awful; since '97, the Rams are 6-4 in playoff games. Of course, the Rams have been awful the last 5+ years, but they've won one less playoff game than Dallas (1-0) during that time.

Maybe Sam Bradford should date some country singer.

Presidential odds: Obama a slight fave down the stretch

Get ready for another term of office for President Obama, who can thank Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide for his second term. If you don’t believe in coincidence, then Alabama’s 21-17 victory over LSU on Saturday night ended the suspense of what up until now had been a pretty tight race.

USA Today reports that since 1984 the result of the LSU-Alabama game has perfectly mirrored the election results. If LSU wins, so do Republicans (Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush twice). When Alabama prevails (Clinton twice, and Obama in 2008), Democrats prevail.

Obama no doubt wishes it were only that simple.

A glance at the numbers two days before the election shows the president with slight but persistent leads in key battleground states, and a majority of polls indicate that Obama is poised to reach the 270-plus electoral vote total he needs.

***European sites have been stable for the past week. William Hill lists Obama at 2/7 and Republican challenger Mitt Romney at 11/4, with Paddy Power pretty much an echo at 1 / 4 and 3/1. Costa Rica-based Ezstreetsports.com lists Obama at -330, Romney at +270.

(If you’re wondering how the offshores set odds, they log on and check the polls. Feilim Mac An Iomaire, a spokesman for Paddy Power, was quoted as saying, “All the latest polls will be looked at. Ninety percent of it going in is what the polls are saying.”)

***Bettors at the Ireland-based prediction market Intrade.com are giving the president about a 64 percent chance at re-election (at this point four years ago he was over 80 percent to defeat John McCain), with Romney at about 36 percent. That number has been stable, though a few days ago Obama climbed to 69 percent before fading a bit on Sunday.

***Election numbers cruncher Nate Silver at the New York Times-sponsored election blog fivethirtyeight.com has dissected state polls from around the country and makes Obama a better-than 4-in-5 favorite (83 percent) to get it done on Tuesday night. Silver notes that of the last 22 polls in battleground states, Obama has led in 19, two are tied, and Romney leads in only one (Marist Poll of Florida voters).

***Oddschecker.com does a good job of pulling it all together.

Edwin Edwards, who was a four-term governor of Louisiana in a career that spanned the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, famously once said of his chances of re-election: “The only way I can lose . . . is if I’m caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy.”

Obama is nowhere near that big a favorite, but unless something bizarre happens in the final 48 hours, he looks like a moderately solid bet to occupy 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for another 48 months.

College football odds: Week 11 opening line report

We understand all about TV bowl contracts that can’t be broken, but can’t we just scrap the present system immediately and fast forward to the 4-team playoff that is not scheduled to start until 2014?

There is a nice divide right now between the unbeaten haves (Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon and Kansas State) and the have-nots (sorry, Louisville, but even 11-0 won’t get you there).

There is still some work to be done, and teams can go south pretty fast (ask Steve Spurrier about that). But assuming no major glitches, Alabama will be playing ND, Oregon or K-State in the BCS title game this year. Which almost guarantees that two other teams will be left to bitch and moan, and bemoan the fact that they may have put it all together two years too soon.

Here’s a look at next week’s games involving the top four teams in the country, with a weekly thank you to Pete Korner, founder and president of The Sports Club, which sets many of the lines in Las Vegas:

        Texas A&M (+17) at Alabama

“It’s all about motivation for the big four teams,” said Korner on Sunday, “and Alabama is motivated. We’re throwing a big number up there [for his sportsbook clients] and hoping that it will stick. Big numbers are legitimate with these teams.” A&M (7-2) will be the last regular-season test for the Tide, who have two semi-scrimmages (Western Carolina and Auburn) before the national championship game.

        California (+26) at Oregon

Another big number in a spread that looks like a Week One match between a legit team and a cupcake looking for a payday. “Oregon is a team that will not let up,” says Korner, noting that savvy bettors will have no trouble connecting the dots after The Ducks’ 62-51 victory over No. 17 USC and Cal’s 21-13 loss to Washington. Cal has injury problems, which could move even more money toward Oregon.

        Kansas State (-8.5) at TCU

The Horned Frogs might be spent after needing overtime to beat West Virginia, and they close the season with three more games against ranked teams (K-State, Texas, Oklahoma). “One of our guys had it at 3,” notes Korner, “but the consensus was that this one is between 8 and 11. We settled at 8.5. Kansas State can’t let this one slip away.”

Notre Dame (-22) at Boston College

Korner says that the line would have been north of 30 if the Irish had this one at home, and while Boston College has played a little better of late, it’s a down year for the Eagles and can’t end soon enough. “This line should stay high,” says Korner. “I just don’t know where the BC money would be coming from at this point.”

Pacers at Spurs: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at San Antonio Spurs (-8, 196)

The San Antonio Spurs have never started an NBA season with four consecutive victories. The Spurs look for that first 4-0 start on Monday when they host the Indiana Pacers, a team they have beaten nine straight times. Indiana has dropped 10 straight games in San Antonio, dating back to the 2001-02 season when the Spurs still called the Alamodome home. Pacers forward Danny Granger is out indefinitely with a knee injury.

Indiana recorded a 106-98 double-overtime win over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. David West (18 points, 18 rebounds), Paul George (16 points, career-high 17 rebounds) and Roy Hibbert (12 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks) all had double-doubles as the Pacers attempt to make up for Granger’s absence. San Antonio is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the Western Conference. The Spurs venture on a four-game West Coast road trip after playing Indiana.

                TV:
8:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Indiana, Fox Sports Southwest (San Antonio)

                LINE:
The Spurs have been bet down from -8 to -7.5 at some books. The total has dropped to 196 from as high as 197.

ABOUT THE PACERS (2-1, 2-1 ATS):
Guard George Hill is playing through a hip pointer and had his best game of the season against Sacramento when he had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists in nearly 45 minutes. Hill figures to be pumped up to go up against former teammate Tony Parker in his second visit to San Antonio since the club shipped him to Indiana in the 2011 draft-day trade that allowed the Spurs to land Kawhi Leonard.

ABOUT THE SPURS (3-0, 1-1-1 ATS):
Veteran guard Manu Ginobili (back) played for the first time this season in Saturday’s victory over the Utah Jazz and tallied eight points in 15-plus minutes off the bench. There is no need to rush Ginobili back into the starting lineup with Danny Green playing so well. Green scored 21 points against the Jazz, hitting 8-of-9 field-goal attempts and connecting on all three 3-pointers. Green is averaging 14.3 points and shooting 58.6 percent.

                TRENDS:

                * Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                * Over is 14-5 in the last 19 meetings.
                * Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in San Antonio.
