    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some NFL trends to ponder, with Week 9 on the horizon........

-- Redskins covered twice in last 11 games as a favorite.

-- Colts covered five of last six home games.

-- Minnesota is 7-14-1 vs spread in last 22 road games.

-- Eagles covered 10 of last 12 Monday night road games.

-- Tampa Bay covered 13 of last 19 road games.

-- Lions covered twice in last nine road games.

    *********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13...........

    32) Chiefs—Travel west to San Diego with banged-up Cassel starting at QB, backed up by former Iowa Hawkeye Ricky Stanzi. Not good.

??) Eagles—Just fired their DC; now starting status of Vick is in question. If he can’t move ball vs defenseless Saints, change is in order.

??) Jets—If they could pawn Tebow off on Jaguars, what a bonanza. Would help Sanchez’ play, but other problems still exist.

??) Panthers—Still think its goofy to have Mike Shula, the old Alabama coach tutoring your franchise QB, an Auburn alum. Maybe its me.

    9) Steelers—I’d love to know how many of those throwback jerseys they’ve sold. Can't be too many.

    8) Packers—Slept thru Jaguar game last week, won by 9. Now John Skelton brings the Redbirds into Lambeau on a 4-game skid. Hard to believe Arizona can spring the upset.

    7) Broncos—When early NFL lines were released in late May, some folks were buying into Denver games all season. Those are the people you see smiling in Vegas today.

    6) Bears—Defense/special teams are carrying squad; at some point, offense will need to drive the bus for a while. Can they?

    5) Texans—Old friend Mario Williams comes calling with schizophrenic Bills this week.

    4) 49ers— Going to jog to NFC West title. Not seeing them as Super Bowl threat.

    3) Patriots—Won last two trips to London, 34-7/45-7. Maybe the teams they play over there should stay stateside until Friday, too.

    2) Giants— Not sure if everyone realizes this, but Tom Coughlin is a Hall of Fame coach, for sure.

    1) Falcons—Atlanta coach Smith worked at Tennessee Tech for 12 years. Tennessee-freakin’-Tech. Now he's 7-0 in the NFL. Go figure.

NBA on TNT: Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs (-2.5, 201.5)

After having the summer to stew over losing to LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, the Oklahoma City Thunder will tip off their 2012-13 season when they visit the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday. While the Thunder still boast three-time scoring champion Kevin Durant and fellow Olympian Russell Westbrook, they traded James Harden to Houston for Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb. Harden, who was the Sixth Man of the Year, agreed to a five-year, $80 million extension on Wednesday.

Despite finishing with the best record in West, the Spurs watched helplessly as Oklahoma City won four straight against them in the conference finals. The veteran Spurs will look to exact a small measure of revenge and feed off Wednesday's 99-95 triumph over New Orleans. Tim Duncan had 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field in the victory.

        TV: 9:30 p.m., TNT

LINE: The Spurs opened as 2.5-point home favorites. The total has moved from 201 to 201.5 points.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (2011-12: 47-19): Harden's departure was the only ripple in an otherwise quiet offseason for Scott Brooks' club. Kendrick Perkins is expected to log plenty of minutes at center and improve upon a woeful 5.1 points per game - his lowest output since his sophomore season in the league. Guard Thabo Sefolosha and power forward Serge Ibaka will round out the starting lineup for Oklahoma City, which will have a tough road to repeat as Western Conference champions.

ABOUT THE SPURS (1-0, 0-1 ATS): Although Tony Parker started his season with a flourish on Wednesday by scoring 23 points, he was simply sensational in a 107-96 victory over Oklahoma City last Feb. 4. The Frenchman scored 42 points and added nine assists in the triumph. Swingman Kawhi Leonard put together strong spurts to finish with 19 points in the opener, which saw veteran guard Manu Ginobili sit out with back spasms.

        TRENDS:

        * Thunder are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
        * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in San Antonio.
        * Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
        * Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
        * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. The Thunder also shipped Cole Aldrich, Lazar Hayward and Daequan Cook to the Rockets, who in turn sent two 2013 first-round picks to complete the Harden deal.

        2. Parker's heroics aside, Oklahoma City won two of the three regular-season meetings between the clubs.

        3. The Thunder led the league with an 80.6 free-throw percentage in 2011-12. The Spurs were 19th with a 74.8 percentage.

Argos sitting starting QB, among others, versus Ticats

It’s not often you see CFL games make sudden mid-week line moves. But that’s what happened Tuesday when the Hamilton Tiger-Cats jumped from 6-point road favorites to 7-point road favorites for their matchup against the Toronto Argonauts Thursday night.

It’s strange enough that the Ti-Cats are favored on the road where they’re 1-7 SU this season. And now the line is moving up because they're fighting for their playoff lives in their final game of the regular season while Toronto has nothing to play for.

The Argos already have home field sewn up for next week’s Eastern Division playoff game and they announced Tuesday they’ll be sitting starting quarterback Ricky Ray this week, among other players.

“My job is to get Ricky into the playoffs as healthy as can be. It’s in the best interest of the football team,” head coach Scott Milanovich told the Toronto Star.

Hamilton needs a win Thursday - and some help from Calgary against Edmonton Friday - just to earn a return trip to Toronto. The Ticats lost and failed to cover in both meetings with the Argos and won’t decline any advantages the Argos want to send their way.

Toronto plans on starting backup quarterback Jarious Jackson but rookies Trevor Harris and Zach Collaros will also get a chance because the
Argos want to see if one of them can challenge for the No. 2 role next year.

Here’s a quick look at others who’ll likely be missing time for Toronto Thursday:

            - Starting running back Chad Kackert as a safety precaution.

            - Rookie receiver Dontrelle Inman will replace Maurice Mann, who is coming off his best game of the season.

            - Rookie Joel Reinders will make his first CFL start on the offensive line and you’ll likely see multiple backups play extended time with veterans Marc Parenteau and Chris Van Zeyl slightly banged up.

            - Linebacker Brandon Isaac will be serving a one-game suspension for an illegal hit on Saskatchewan QB Darian Durant last week. Isaac had two sacks and eight tackles in the first half before the hit.

            - Defensive tackle Kevin Huntley and defensive end Ronald Flemons are also banged up so we could see multiple changes on the defensive line throughout the game.
