    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Two weeks ago, the future line on Georgia-Florida was Dawgs -5. Last week, it was even. Now, Florida is -2.5.

-- When was last time someone other than Duke/North Carolina was the pick to win the ACC in hoop? NC State is this season.

    -- I can't believe there's a college football game on TV tonight, a Tuesday.

-- Ray Lewis is out for the season with a torn triceps muscle. Ravens also lost Lardarius Webb for the year (knee).

-- Every time I see the Brooklyn Nets' new logo, I think its an 8-ball.

-- Damn its hard to rebuild a bad college football team; you have 85 kids on scholarship (17 a year, with redshirts) so you have to convince lot of kids to sign on with a losing program. Not easy to do. Basketball? If you get three good players a year, you're set.

    *********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) Atlanta Falcons starting playing in the NFL in 1966; they’re on their 16th head coach. Pittsburgh Steelers have been around forever, but have had only three head coaches since 1969.

    12) If you’re never heard of Willie Taggart, you will soon; he’s the football coach at Western Kentucky, but he’ll be in the SEC soon. Hilltoppers not only win, they’ve covered the pointspread in their last 15 games, which means his team consistently does better than expected.

    11) They sell fried peanut butter/jelly/banana sandwiches at the Texas State Fair. I can’t even imagine what that tastes like.

    10) Tampa Bay Rays are first team ever to win 90+ games and finish last in the league in attendance. Be proud, Tampa Bay!!!

    9) NFL teams coming off Wednesday/Thursday games are 3-7 so far this year, so beware, Steelers/Titans.

    8) How do they decide where to hold these Presidential debates?

Denver, now Long Island; the VP debate was in a small Kentucky town. Who decides this?

    7) Good news for Reds’ fans and Brandon Phillips’ fantasy league owners; Dusty Baker got a two-year extension to manage the club. Dusty is an excellent guy; hope he’s feeling well.

    6) Darrelle Revis has a camera crew following him for a documentary as he rehabs his knee from ACL surgery. Think lot of people who don’t know that much about sports will be stunned at how hard these guys have to work to get back on the playing field.

    5) If the 2012 NFL Draft was re-held tomorrow, would Andrew Luck still be the first player chosen? I think he would, but Russell Wilson might get taken a whole lot sooner than the third round.

    4) Before Sunday, Patriots had averaged 5.48 points/red zone possession (126 points on 23 such drives); Sunday in Seattle, they scored 16 points on six red zone drives (2.67) which is a big part of why they lost 24-23.

    3) In their first five games, Seattle had 10 offensive plays that gained 20+ yards; in their 6th game, in the rain Sunday, they had six such plays. The way to beat the Patriots is get them in a track meet. You probably have faster guys than they do.

    2) Clock management was a problem for the Cowboys-Patriots-Giants this week; didn’t hurt the Giants, since the FG try they gifted the 49ers with was missed, but it cost the Cowboys a game and it cost New England a FG when they were in control of the game at the end of the half.

Why do football coaches struggle with the clock? Its not that hard.

    1) I’ll tell you what Joe Girardi, we’ll make a deal; you can have your instant replay; just have your bosses OK a salary cap. Then things will be really fair. They aren’t right now. Until then, please stop whining.

Pucking the trends: AHL betting news and notes

No NHL. No problem. Get your hockey fix from the young guns in the AHL. Each week we look inside the American Hockey League for the best betting news and notes.

      Hot Team: Springfield Falcons

The Columbus Blue Jackets affiliate is off to a flying start, outscoring their opponents 8-2 in wins over the St. John’s IceCaps and the Adirondack Phantoms.

Veteran goaltender Curtis McElhinney looked especially sharp stopping 31 shots in a 4-0 shutout win Sunday against the Phantoms, who have Flyers prospects Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier leading their offence. Both wins were at home, which bodes well for the rest of Springfield’s month. The Falcons only have one road game in October.

      Cold Team: Providence Bruins

The Bruins scored first in both of their losses to start the season - a worrying trend if it continues. Even more worrying is that the tying goals they allowed in both games came while they were on the power play.

Providence can take comfort in the fact that two games is hardly a proper sample size, but with road games against the Manchester Monarchs and Springfield Falcons (both 2-0-0-0 to start) this weekend, the Bruins could find themselves in a deep hole before the month is through.

      Prospect Watch: Lake Erie Monsters

Lake Erie’s crease has a new, young look this season and it’s paying off so far. The Colorado Avalanche affiliate started the season with two 20-year-old rookies platooning in net: Former Seattle Thunderbirds starter Calvin Pickard and Sami Aittokallio, who was a star for Finland at the 2012 World Junior Championships.

Together, the two 2010 draft picks have allowed just four goals in their first three games. Aittokallio allowed one goal against the prospect-studded Oilers affiliate Oklahoma City Barons to open the season, while Pickard made 40 saves to shut out the Toronto Marlies Sunday.

      Scoring Leaders: Week 1

A familiar face is at the top of the AHL scoring race after the opening weekend. Cory Conacher, who finished second in scoring with 80 points last season, picked up right where he left off with five points in his first two games for the Syracuse Crunch.

The diminutive winger has two goals and three assists - one point ahead of top prospects Sven Baertschi and Nino Niederreiter, who have two goals and two assists apiece for Abbotsford and Bridgeport, respectively. Lake Erie’s Thomas Pock is the top-scoring defenseman with a goal and three assists in three games.

      Surveying the schedule:

      - The Binghamton Senators have only played one game so far, but they’ll catch up to the rest of the league with four games on the schedule this week. After travelling to Rochester Tuesday, the Senators head home to host Hershey Friday and Syracuse Saturday, then travel to Hershey for Sunday’s matinee.

      - The Chicago Wolves are next to head west for a double-header against the Abbotsford Heat. The Wolves will start their week Wednesday hosting the Peoria Rivermen, who are returning from dropping two straight to the Heat by a combined score of 10-3. Abbotsford’s location in relation to the rest of the league means teams play double-headers when they visit to cut down on travel costs. The Wolves will face the Heat Friday and Saturday.

Verlander is 6-0, 0.82 in his last six starts, allowing four runs in 44 IP, but he is 1-1, 5.31 in three starts vs Bronx this year. Bombers figure to play better on road, away from front-running Big Apple nitwits, but they've scored in only one of 21 series innings. Hughes is 0-1, 5.00 in his last three starts but pitched well in last start, vs Orioles; he is 1-1, 3.38 vs Detroit this year. Visiting teams are 16-10 in playoffs so far this month. Aside from Valverde, Tiger pitchers have tossed 40.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Detroit won its last six home games.

ALCS betting preview: Yankees at Tigers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers (-178, 7)

        Detroit lead series 2-0.

The Detroit Tigers are in perfect position to put a stranglehold on the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series as they send ace Justin Verlander to the mound Tuesday in Game 3 while owning a 2-0 series lead. Detroit posted a 6-4 victory in 12 innings in the series opener as Delmon Young collected three RBIs, including the game-winner. Young also notched the game-winning RBI in Game 2, but the story for the Tigers was Anibal Sanchez, who yielded just three hits and struck out seven over seven scoreless innings.

Save for two innings, the Yankees' offense has struggled mightily this postseason. The club scored five runs in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the AL Division Series against Baltimore and four in the ninth of Saturday's series opener versus Detroit. In its other 70 playoff innings, New York has totaled 11 runs. Robinson Cano, who ended the regular season on a 24-for-39 tear, is hitting .063 in the playoffs and is mired in an 0-for-26 drought, the longest in one postseason in major-league history. Curtis Granderson (.115) has struck out 14 times in 26 at-bats and Alex Rodriguez (.130) 12 times in 23 at-bats.

        TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the low-50s under mostly cloudy skies. Winds will blow in from right field at 10 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Phil Hughes (0-0, 1.35 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (2-0, 0.56)

Hughes came up with a strong performance in Game 4 of the ALDS but settled for a no-decision after allowing one run and four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old was 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in two starts at Comerica Park during the regular season, tossing a four-hitter on June 3 before yielding four runs in 4 1/3 innings of a loss on Aug. 7. Hughes faced Detroit twice in relief during last year's ALDS, allowing two hits and striking out four over 2 1/3 scoreless frames.

After allowing just one run and three hits over seven innings in a Game 1 victory over Oakland in the ALDS, Verlander tossed a four-hit shutout in the decisive fifth game of the series. He issued five walks over 16 innings and struck out 11 in each contest. The 29-year-old went 0-1 with a 5.11 ERA in his first two starts of the year against New York before yielding two unearned runs and striking out a career high-tying 14 in eight innings of a home victory on Aug. 6. Verlander, who pitched one inning in last year's ALDS opener before the rains came and ended his night, yielded four runs and fanned 11 over eight frames in a Game 3 victory.

        TRENDS:

        * Yankees are 0-7 in their last seven playoff games as an underdog.
        * Tigers are 5-0 in their last five playoff games as a favorite.
        * Over is 4-0-1 in Yankees’ last five playoff games as an underdog.
        * Over is 4-1 in Tigers’ last five League Championship games.

        UMP TRENDS- Sam Holbrook

        * Over is 3-0-1 in Holbrook’s last four games behind home plate.
        * Tigers are 6-0 in their last six games with Holbrook behind home plate.
        * Yankees are 2-9 in their last 11 games with Holbrook behind home plate.
        * Home team is 9-2 in Holbrook’s last 11 Tuesday games behind home plate.

        WALK-OFFS:

        1. Hughes' complete-game victory over Detroit on June 3 came against Verlander.

        2. Verlander led the major leagues with 239 strikeouts during the regular season, while teammate and Game Four starter Max Scherzer was second with 231.

        3. New York is 4-4 in a playoff series in which it lost the first two games, while Detroit has completed sweeps both times it took a 2-0 series lead. Since the LCS expanded to seven games in 1985, 20 of the 23 clubs that won the first two games went on to capture the series.
