    ***********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here........

    13) If I ran a TV network that had NFL games on it, I’d push the league to allow us to have a Jimmy the Greek-type character on it to pick games, against the spread. Sports gambling is going to be legalized nation-wide in the fairly near future, there’s just too much money involved for it not to happen. The garbage these **** shows puts on the air now is comical.

Who gives a rat’s ass what Keyshawn Johnson thinks about anything? Put Hank Greenberg on there with a bankroll and the ratings will go up.

    12) Is it legal for a CEO to tell his employees their company could shut down if a certain candidate wins an election? Isn’t that a kind of extortion, to get people to vote the way you want them to? Westgate Resorts has 7,000 employees; if you think Mr Obama winning is going to cost you your job, how can you vote for him?

Westgate's CEO did that, so it must be legal. Just wonder if he's lying.

    11) Don’t think the Red Sox should hire a first-time manager; given all the media scrutiny in Boston, think you need a guy who has been in the fishbowl before, like Terry Francona had been in Philly.

I saw an A’s-Boston game on a Tuesday night in August ’03, not a huge series; the next day, nine pages of stories on that one game. Nine pages!!! Managing in Boston is harder than New York, because the total/complete focus is on the Sawx. Lot more distractions in NYC.

    10) Rumor has the Diamondbacks interested in Bob Brenly as their new TV analyst, should the Cubs not re-sign him. Brenly is terrific, like having a buddy over to watch a game with. Would like it if the Cubs then signed Mark Grace to replace Brenly in their booth, which would basically make it a trade of analysts. Gracie could be this generation’s Harry Caray.

    9) Utah Jazz big man Al Jefferson has a $23,000 bed. He’s a big guy who needs to take care of his very large body for his job, but wow, my car cost less than $23,000, and it’s a nice car.

    8) Coco Crisp’s dad used to play ping pong with basketball star Marques Johnson when two of them went to junior high together in Los Angeles.

    7) I am told the speed limit on the highway from Denver to Boulder is 75 mph. Do you think competitive eaters have trouble with the high altitude in Colorado?

    6) Next year’s London NFL game is 49ers-Jaguars; using my keen powers of deduction, that means NFC West-AFC South matchups, which tells me Rams-Titans (Jeff Fisher Bowl) figures to be an early season Monday Night Football matchup.

    5) ESPN gave us another reason to never, ever watch its NFL **** show, when it signed comedian Frank Caliendo to be part of the program. Not good. If you're lacking for material, shorten the program.

    4) Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan was 1-10 from foul line in an exhibition game in China Thursday; Jordan made $10M+ last year, yet is a 44% career foul shooter, who improved to 52.5% LY. What the hell did he do all summer? How can you not make at least three out of five foul shots?

    3) I need to know when the innings limit on Stephen Strasburg is over; next year, the year after, when he hits 30? Seriously, if I bought Nats’ season tickets, I’d want answer before I plunked my money down.

    2) Speaking of which, how do you feel if you’re a Nats fan? Team is in a tough spot, I can see the point of holding him out, but there is no guarantee the Nationals are ever getting another chance like this, and there’s no guarantee he won’t get hurt anyway.

    1) Tennessee Titans pulled a pretty big upset, beating the Steelers 26-23 in Nashville Thursday; big win for Mike Munchak's program.

Home underdogs are 12-2 in the CFL this season.

BCLions (10-4) @ Hamilton (5-9)-- TigerCats (+6) lost 39-36 in Vancouver back in Week 2, giving up 208 rushing yards but outgaining Lions 425-386. Hamilton is 2-7 since its bye week, but they did win their last two home tilts, scoring 51-41 points- they're 3-3 vs spread as a dog, 1-0 at home. Calgary (8-6) @ Winnipeg (4-10)-- Lowly Bombers won two of three games since a hideous 44-3 loss (+10) at McMahon four weeks ago, when they were outgained by 317 yards, completing only 12-25 passes for 90 yards. Underdogs covered last five Winnipeg home games; Bombers are 4-2 when getting points at home. Canadian Bacon: Week 16 CFL betting preview
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With only four games remaining on the regular season schedule, the drive to the postseason continues for CFL teams in Week 16.

      B.C. Lions at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2.5, 54.5)

B.C. continues its quest for the best overall record in the league against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium on Friday night. The Lions hold a two-game lead in the West over Calgary and Saskatchewan, thanks to a 27-22 win over the Stampeders at home last week, which officially clinched a playoff spot. Travis Lulay, one of three quarterbacks to start every game this season, ran his consecutive games streak with at least one TD pass to 25, converting 23-of-33 passes for 268 yards and two scores in the win.

Hamilton fell 35-20 to Edmonton on the road last Friday. Quarterback Henry Burris has 12 passing TDs in his last five games versus the Lions. He is first in the league in TD passes this season and leads an offense that ranks first in the CFL in scoring at 30.1 points per game. Unfortunately, the defense stinks and the Kitty Cats rank at the bottom in the league in a number of categories.

Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3, 53.5)

The Stampeders are coming off a five-point loss to the Lions. The offense sputtered in the first half, putting up just six points before finally finding a flow in the second half to make up ground. Nik Lewis leads the CFL in yards after the catch with 488. He also has a league-best 84 receptions to go with 8 TDs, second only to Saskatchewan wideout Weston Dressler (10). Calgary is 0-5-1 ATS in its last six meetings in Winnipeg.

The Blue Bombers are finally turning things around with two wins in their last three outings, including a 27-22 upset over Montreal earlier this week. Quarterback Joey Elliott completed 17-of-25 passes for a hearty 335 yards and three touchdowns to earn CFL Offensive Player of the Week honors. Despite the recent improvements in its air attack, Winnipeg is the only team that has more interceptions (16) than touchdowns (13) after 14 games.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Eskimos (-1, 48)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders try to run their win streak to four in a row on Saturday when they take on the Edmonton Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium. The Riders are getting hot at the right time of year, snagging victories in five of their last six opportunities. Saskatchewan has played under the total in its last seven October games.

Quarterback Kerry Joseph put in a good effort for Edmonton as he converted 24-of-39 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers in last week’s 35-20 victory over Hamilton. The Eskimos have played under the total in seven of their last eight Saturday games.

Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts (Odds N/A)

The Montreal Alouettes try to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the campaign Sunday afternoon when they travel to the Rogers Centre to take on the Argonauts. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo, who is usually soft spoken in his dealings with the media, sounded off after the Als were stunned by lowly Winnipeg on Monday. The 40-year-old was intercepted twice and his only TD pass came late in the fourth quarter of the loss. Alouettes personnel were shocked to hear Calvillo - a man of strong faith - use some foul language after the contest during post-game interviews and it will be interesting to see how the team responds.

The Argonauts are just one game off the pace in the East set by Montreal at the moment, but must be better than they were in Week 15, when they fell 36-10 to the Riders. Quarterback Jarious Jackson, who got the start in place of the injured Ricky Ray (knee), completed just over 50 percent of his passes for a mediocre 162 yards. The two clubs have played over the total in each of their last five meetings.

St Louis scored 20 runs in its two series wins, three in their two losses; hard to put big numbers up against GGonzalez, who is 5-1, 2.00 in his last seven starts, 1-0, 1.29 in two starts against St Louis this year; Washington staved off elimination Thursday, is now 4-2 in last six home games. Eight of eleven series games have gone over total. Wainwright is 1-0, 1.54 in his last two starts, both of which were against Washington, but Nationals pounded him in a previous start on August 31. Cardinals won six of their last eight away games.

Road team is 14-8 in Bronx-O's games this season; Orioles are 7-4 at this site. O's are now 31-10 in one-run games, 17-3 in extra-inning games, but all three losses were to Bronx. Hammel is 0-0, 2.51 in his last three starts, but effort in Game 1 was his first start in 26 days, so not sure how he rebounds here. He is 0-1, 4.15 in four starts vs Bronx this year. Sabathia is 3-0, 1.65 in his last four starts, lasting 8+ innings in all four; he is 1-2, 5.00 in four starts vs Orioles.

ALDS betting preview: Orioles at Yankees
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees (-198, 7.5)

          Series tied 2-2

Neither the Baltimore Orioles nor the New York Yankees were able to gain the upper hand during the regular season as the American League East rivals split their 18-game season series. Nothing has been resolved thus far in their AL Division Series as each club has won a pair of contests, setting up Game Five at Yankee Stadium on Friday to decide who will face the Detroit Tigers in the AL Championship Series.

Baltimore was within two outs of taking a 2-1 series lead on Wednesday, only to have Raul Ibanez hit a game-tying home run as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and a game-winning blast leading off the 12th frame. The Orioles turned the tables a night later as rookie Manny Machado opened the 13th inning of a 1-1 contest with a double and scored two batters later on J.J. Hardy's two-base hit. Closer Jim Johnson, who took the loss in the series opener and served up Ibanez's first homer in Game Three to blow the save opportunity, redeemed himself by retiring the Yankees in order for his second save of the postseason.

The Orioles improved to 31-10 in one-run games this year, including a 2-1 mark in the series. The starting pitching on both sides has been tremendous through the first four contests. Of the eight combined starters, only one (Andy Pettitte) has allowed more than two runs. Baltimore's starters have yielded six runs while New York's have given up eight.

          TV: 5:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the mid-50’s under sunny skies. Winds will blow out to right field at 15 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Jason Hammel (0-0, 3.18 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (1-0, 2.08)

Making his first start since Sept. 11 and third since July 13 due to problems with his knee, Hammel pitched as well as could be expected in the series opener, limiting New York to two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old went 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts against the Yankees during the regular season, including a no-decision on Sept. 6 in which he yielded one run over five frames. Hammel is 1-3 with 5.86 ERA in 15 career games against the Yankees, including nine starts.

Sabathia had his best performance against the Orioles this season in the series opener, coming within one out of a complete game as he allowed two runs and eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. During the regular season, the 32-year-old struggled versus Baltimore, going 0-2 with a 6.38 ERA in three starts. Sabathia has dominated the Orioles over his career as he's posted a 17-4 record and 3.07 ERA in 26 outings.

          TRENDS:

NLDS betting preview: Cardinals at Nationals
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Washington Nationals (-134, 7)

            Series tied 2-2

The Washington Nationals still don't have their offense clicking in the National League Division Series, but they got the home run when they needed it in Game 4. Jayson Werth’s walk-off blast staved off elimination and gave Washington its first home playoff win since Game 3 of the 1933 World Series. The Nationals now have a chance to clinch the best-of-five series at home against Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals.

The teams combined for only six hits in Washington’s 2-1 win on Thursday afternoon but the last one mattered the most, as Werth fought through a 13-pitch at-bat and hammered a homer into the bullpen in left-center. The Nationals are averaging 2.25 runs in the series, with only Ian Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman batting over .300 among the regulars. The Cardinals exploded offensively in their two victories, totaling 20 runs, but have managed three in their two setbacks. St. Louis batters struck out eight times among nine outs against the Nationals bullpen on Thursday. One of those relievers was Game 2 starter Jordan Zimmermann, who struck out the side in the seventh. Both managers will likely have everyone but the Game 4 starters available in relief on Friday.

            TV: 8:37 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the low-50s under clear skies. Winds will blow in from left field at 9 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Adam Wainwright (0-0, 1.59 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (0-0, 3.60)

Wainwright struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings in Game 1, allowing one run on six hits while walking three. The veteran right-hander has struggled in three career starts at Nationals Park, going 1-2 with a 7.24 ERA. Wainwright was not a part of St. Louis’ World Series run last October while recovering from Tommy John surgery but is no stranger to big spots. It was Wainwright who struck out Carlos Beltran to end the 2006 NLCS and send the Cardinals to the World Series. He is 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA in 11 career playoff games (two starts).

Gonzalez struggled with his command in Game 1, issuing seven walks in five innings. The left-hander surrendered only one hit but was charged with two runs while striking out five. Gonzalez has not allowed more than three runs in a start since Aug. 3 and has been strong at home, going 9-4 with a 2.38 ERA in 14 starts at Nationals Park.

            TRENDS:

            * Over is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings.
            * Cardinals are 2-9 in the last 11 meetings in Washington.
            * Cardinals are 6-0 in their last six games following a loss.
            * Nationals are 4-0 in Gonzalez’s last four home starts.

            UMPIRE TRENDS-Alfonso Marquez

            * Over is 7-0 in Marquez’s last seven games behind home plate vs. Washington.
            * Home team is 4-0 in Marquez’s last four Friday games behind home plate.
            * Cardinals are 19-7 in their last 26 games with Marquez behind home plate.

            WALK-OFFS:

            1. Washington CF Bryce Harper has struggled in the series, going 1-for-18 with eight strikeouts. Danny Espinosa (1-for-12) and Kurt Suzuki (1-for-13) are following closely behind.

            2. The Cardinals won four elimination games in the 2011 postseason and took the one-game wild card playoff last week.

            3. Werth’s 14 postseason home runs since 2004 are tied for the second-most in the majors over that span, behind only Albert Pujols’ 16
