Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

    32) Chiefs-- Outscored 58-12 in first half of last three games.

    31) Browns-- Opened as 13-point dogs this week; they've already been bet down to +9. Haven't lost a game by more than 10 points.

??) Jets-- Opened at +4.5 against Houston Monday night, are now +7.5; you know how much money it takes for the line to cross 6 AND 7?

??) Redskins-- Robert Griffin III is fun to watch; seriously, he's lot like Cam Newton in Carolina. If you have Sunday Ticket and you don't know what game to watch, just watch their games. Good stuff.

??) Dolphins-- WR Brian Hartline leads NFL with 455 receiving yards on a team that lost its last two games in OT.

    8) Patriots-- Were 1-2 and down at half in Buffalo, then scored 45 points in second half. OC McDaniels faces his old team (Denver) this week.

    7) Bears-- Lovie Smith teams always force lot of turnovers; they've got 14 (+7) in four games this season.

    6) Bengals-- Marvin Lewis is highly underappreciated; he is 72-78-1 as coach of the Bengals. His three predecessors? 52-124.

    5) Ravens-- News of Chuck Pagano's illness had to hit hard here, since he was Ravens' DC LY, his 4th year with the team.

    4) Cardinals-- Undefeated, well-coached. Hopefully they'll lose this week.

    3) 49ers-- 4-0 vs spread under Harbaugh in game following a loss. Hard to tell how much of 34-0 win in Swamp was them, how much was Jets.

    2) Falcons-- Scored 14 TDs in four games; have had 17+ points at the half in all four games. Interesting game in Washington this week.

    1) Texans-- If you're a college softball coach reading this, Jamie Tolley is a young lady in the Houston area with a bright future ahead of her. Keep her in mind when its time to to hand out scholarships in 2018 or so.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

A 0-4 start to the season will get the gears of front-office folk spinning, especially if you’re the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints, who remain winless following a 28-27 loss to Green Bay Sunday, are more than likely out of the postseason picture and playing for nothing but pride in the final three months of the schedule.

The “Bountygate” scandal has obviously taken its toll on the team and serves as a justifiable excuse to pack it up and start looking ahead to 2013, even though the calendar just flipped to October. New Orleans can wash its hands of this year, go through the motions, get a high draft pick and come back next season with head coach Sean Payton fresh off suspension.

      Who would blame the Saints?

That’s not the way oddsmakers see it. They see plenty of fight left in the Big Easy, which is why New Orleans is a 4-point home favorite versus the San Diego Chargers in Week 5. Books actually opened with the Saints as field-goal faves but early money pushed the spread off the key number.

Granted, San Diego has a bit of a paper 3-1 record, with wins coming against Tennessee, Oakland and Kansas City – three of the worst teams in the NFL. The Chargers were exposed and outclassed in their lone meeting with a contending team, losing 27-3 to the Atlanta Falcons as 3-point home favorites two weeks ago.

The Saints are far from contenders and could be eyeing the bye week that follows the San Diego game like a fat kid stares down a cake. New Orleans needs time to catch its breath and recover, or decide to pull the plug on the season.

Here are some other spread making football bettors go “hmmm…” heading into the weekend:

      NFL

Seattle Seahawks at Carolina Panthers (-3, 44)

Suddenly, we’re not so high on the Seattle Seahawks.

After thumping the Dallas Cowboys and shocking the Packers on Monday Night Football, the Seahawks laid an egg in St. Louis last weekend. Despite having some new faces on the field and the sidelines, Seattle remains a home-away team and can’t seem to get the job done without the infamous 12th man ringing in opponents’ ears.

Carolina has been a favorite of sharp bettors early in the season. The Panthers could be the most dangerous 1-3 team in the NFL and, outside of a blowout loss to the New York Giants, have been in the mix during their three other games.

While the spread isn't surprising, it does leave football bettors a lot to ponder as we trudge toward Sunday.

      NCAAF

UCLA Bruins at Cal Golden Bears (+3, 54)

The Bruins are giving only a field goal to their state rivals, despite the fact that Cal has one win on the year - over an FCS program.

The Golden Bears, 1-4, are coming off a 27-17 loss to Arizona State and the chair in Jeff Tedford’s office is starting to resemble the Human Torch’s La-Z-Boy. Cal has crumbled down the stretch, giving up 37 percent of its 151 total points against in the fourth quarter, and will have a tough time slowing down the Bruins’ fourth-ranked offense no matter what frame it is.

Vanderbilt Commodores at Missouri Tigers (-6.5, 45.5)

A 1-3 start to the schedule has erased the Commodores from the minds of most bettors. Vanderbilt was the sleeper of all sleepers heading into the season, bringing back a surplus of talent on both sides of the ball.

However, a tough opening slate that featured three teams currently ranked in the Top 25 has oddsmakers discounting Vandy heading into Week 5’s showdown in Missouri. Vanderbilt had a bye week to put those losses in the rearview but hasn't fared well following the week off, going just 2-6 SU off the bye the past 10 seasons. (They had two seasons during that stretch without a bye.)

The Tigers are almost giving a touchdown despite being tagged as 1.5-point dogs at Central Florida last weekend. Missouri’s offense is stumbling, not giving James Franklin - who is still not 100 percent - time to hit his receivers. Franklin was sacked five times versus UCF.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (20-4, 2.73 ERA)

Weaver has won four consecutive starts since falling to the Mariners on Sept. 2. He also lost to Seattle on Aug. 12 when Montero hit two homers. Weaver is 12-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 24 career starts against the Mariners. He needs nine strikeouts for his fifth consecutive season of 150 or more strikeouts.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (14-9, 3.46 ERA)

Vogelsong is 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 16 career games against the Dodgers, including 2-1 with an 0.89 ERA in three starts this season. After struggling for much of August and September, he has allowed just two runs (one earned) in 12 innings over his last two starts. Kemp is 5-for-15 (.333) with a home run against Vogelsong.

              Slumping

Daisuke Matsuzaka, Boston Red Sox (1-6, 7.68 ERA)

Matsuzaka will be making what is likely his final appearance in a Boston uniform. The hugely hyped right-hander ended up having two solid seasons and four injury-marred campaigns with the Red Sox after a posting fee and six-year contract that came out to more than $100 million. Matsuzaka has made four starts in September, going 0-3 with a 13.50 ERA. He last pitched at Tampa Bay on Sept. 19 and lasted only three innings, allowing five runs. He is 3-3 with a 5.52 ERA in 10 career starts against New York.

Edwin Jackson, Washington Nationals (9-11, 4.13 ERA)

Jackson slipped to 0-4 in his career against the Phillies when he lost on Aug. 24, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings. He was roughed up in his last start when he gave up nine runs (eight earned) in just 1 1/3 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Jackson had a 7.92 ERA in five September starts. He is 0-3 with a 4.34 ERA in three starts against the Phillies this season.

Holy cow! 'Under' goes undefeated in Tues. MLB

The penultimate night of the major league baseball season turned out to be the ultimate night of the season for under bettors.

The under went an incredible 13-0-2 against the total with the only two pushes coming in the Angels-M’s and Mets-Marlins games. The Mets-Marlins contest even needed extra innings to reach the push.

The highest scoring game of the night was the Rockies-Diamondbacks, which saw only 8 runs scored and fell 1.5 runs shy of the 9.5-run total. Seven games saw a combined seven runs scored, while the lowest scoring game was the O’s-Rays, where Baltimore squeaked out a 1-0 victory in a contest that saw just four hits.

Cold weather plays a key factor this time of year, which can make it more difficult for the ball to carry. Teams are also giving less experienced players a chance to get in the lineup for the clubs with no hope of reaching the playoffs.

At the same time, teams trying to make the playoffs are throwing out their best pitchers and you’re likely to see fielders sacrificing more to make plays. All that said, it's a bit of a fluke for this to happen. (We're looking into the last time it happened - if it ever did.)

Oddsmakers did what they could to limit the damage – the highest over/under on the board was 9.5 yesterday and seven games saw totals of either 7 or 7.5 runs
