    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Leftover stuff from Saturday's college action, and some baseball......

-- Middle Tennessee 49, Georgia Tech 28. Can't be good for the ACC's power rating. Option-loving Tech actually threw the ball 26 times.

-- Derek Carr threw for 536 yards in Fresno State's 52-40 win against San Diego State; Carr's older brother David is backup QB for the Giants.

-- Oklahoma State has 66 players on its roster from Texas.

-- Braves beat the Mets, their 23rd straight win with Kris Medlen as the starting pitcher. Odd thing is, his first 2012 start wasn't until July 31.

-- Detroit Tigers won 2-1 in Minnesota, now have a 3-game lead over the freefalling White Sox in the AL Central.

-- Yoenis Cespedes broke a 2-2 tie with an 8th-inning homer as the gritty Oakland A's beat Seattle 5-2; their seemingly-impossible dream of making the playoffs is close to becoming a reality.

Why didn't ESPN have a baseball game on Sunday night?

    ********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.............

    13) Arizona Cardinals converted a 4th-and-10 play for the tying TD and beat Miami 24-21 in OT, making them 4-0 for the first time in 38 years. Redbirds have now won 10 games in a row that were decided by less than seven points.

    12) Minnesota Vikings didn't score an offensive TD at Detroit, but they did run a kickoff and a punt back for TDs, upsetting the Lions 20-13 at Ford Field. Detroit (3 takeaways, -3) is finding ways to lose so far this season.

    11) Jets got bamboozled 34-0 at home by the 49ers, getting outrushed by 200 yards; now we'll find out if Rex Ryan can coach, if he can take a bad situation and somehow make it better. Jets are 2-2, its not a disaster yet, but it sure looks like its headed that way.

Jets completed 14-30 passes, were 2-13 on 3rd down and lost the battle for field position by 15 yards. Other than that, they played great.

    10) NFL teams are now 14-2 this season when they win field position battle by 10+ yards (5-0 this week).

    9) The five most popular picks in the LVH Handicapping Contest (people pick 5 teams a week, $1,500 for the year) all covered the spread Sunday. Of the six least popular picks Sunday, only one (Saints) covered.

    8) If you care about such things, underdogs are 8-6 this week, 36-26 for season. Home teams are 4-10 this week (10-20 last two weeks), over was 7-7 going into the Monday night game.

    7) On their first seven drives Sunday, Patriots had a TD, missed two FGs, and ran 41 plays for 250 yards.

On their last seven drives, New England ran 39 plays for 337 yards, good for six TDs and a field goal.

Did I mention they scored 45 points in the second half?

    6) Redskins' four games have been decided by total of 20 points; RGIII is fun to watch, but they missed three FGs in a row before Billy Cundiff hit the game-winner, which probably saves his job (for this week).

    5) Red zone offenses averaged 4.96 points/possession this week, up from last week. There were 107 plays of 20+ yards this week, for an average of 4.11 per team, up a ltitle this week.

Seattle Seahawks are the first team this season to not have one play of 20+ yards in a game.

    4) Raiders won their last four visits to Denver, but they got squashed Sunday, losing 37-6 in game where Broncos won 21 of 28 3rd down plays. Manning was 30-39/338 passing and looked very, very sharp.

    3) Why was Jacksonville favored over the Bengals? I know that money drives who is and isn't favored, but who is plunking money down on Blaine Gabbard? Line moved to Jacksonville being favored late Saturday night, and that takes a decent amount of cash. Go figure.

    2) Impressive win by the Chargers, bouncing back from last week's loss and crushing Kansas City on the road. Have to wonder about 1-3 Chiefs, who were down 24-6 to the 0-4 Saints in their only win.

    1) My Rams are 2-2 and a spunky bunch, but the two wins came against rookie QBs. They'll need improvement on OL to beat the better teams, when they'll need to score more than one TD a game.

          Monday, October 1

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          STREAKING

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees (14-6, 3.42)

Sabathia struck out 10 over eight innings in the Yankees’ 8-2 win over the Twins on Wednesday. The lefty has 21 strikeouts and has allowed just two earned runs over his past two starts. He gets the ball in a must-win game against the Red Sox next.

Jarrod Parker, Oakland Athletics (12-8, 3.44)

Parker struck out eight and held the Rangers to three runs over six innings in Wednesday's win. The right-hander has a 2.31 in 35 September innings and has picked up wins in three of his last four starts. He’ll feel the playoff pressure in his next outing against the same Texas squad he faced last time out.

          SLUMPING

Clayton Richard, San Diego Padres (14-13, 3.91)

Richard gave up four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings as the Padres fell to the Dodgers 8-2 on Wednesday. The left-hander has surrendered 13 earned runs in only 21 1/3 September innings. His final start comes against the Brewers.

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (13-8, 2.86)

Hernandez allowed two runs on five hits in six innings Wednesday at the Angels. King Felix may be feeling the grind of a long season, as he’s winless in his last five starts and is the owner of an ugly 5.70 ERA in September. He draws Los Angeles again in his final start.

Monday's key MLB games with playoff implications
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only three games remain for MLB teams heading into action Sunday and playoff races are heating up.

Here are Monday’s key matchups with playoff implications that bettors should be aware of:

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-228)

Eduardo Nunez hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as visiting New York recovered from a four-run deficit to prevail over Toronto on Sunday and remain tied with Baltimore atop the AL East.

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians (Odds N/A)

The White Sox trail the Tigers by three games in the AL Central with three to play.

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays (Odds N/A)

Nate McLouth, J.J. Hardy and Chris Davis each homered as Baltimore completed a three-game sweep of visiting Boston and clinched a playoff berth on Sunday. The Rays still have an outside shot at a wild-card berth, but need to win all three of their remaining games and get some help.

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals (+123)

The Tigers have assured at the very least a one-game playoff for the division crown and are just a win or a Chicago loss away from clinching the AL Central.

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (Odds N/A)

With their 15th win in 20 home contests Sunday, the Athletics inched closer to Texas in the AL West standings while maintaining a three-game lead over Los Angeles and Tampa Bay for the second wild card.

Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals (-132)

Carlos Beltran homered twice and drove in five runs as host St. Louis moved closer to clinching a postseason berth by downing the Nationals on Sunday. The Cardinals have a two-game lead over the Dodgers for the second NL wild card.

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners (Odds/NA)

The Angels sit three games back of the A’s for the second AL wild-card spot with three to play.

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (+106)

The Dodgers remain two games behind St. Louis for the second wild card after extending their winning streak to five games with a victory over the Rockies on Sunday.

College football odds: Week 6 opening line report

Winning in college football isn’t just about being ahead on the scoreboard when the final seconds tick off the clock. If that were the case, the LSU Tigers would still be ranked the No. 1 team in the country.

Louisiana State, which opened the 2012 campaign as the preseason No. 1, is undefeated heading into Week 6’s SEC showdown with the Florida Gators but has slid back to the No. 3 spot in the Top 25 due to unimpressive victories over Auburn and FCS Towson.

In fact, the Tigers have fallen short of expectations - oddsmakers’ expectations - in three of their five games so far, going 2-3 ATS. Last year, LSU had the reverse of that ATS record at this point in the schedule and finished the regular season 10-3 ATS – one of six teams with double-figure paydays.

Online books opened LSU as a 3-point road favorite heading into the Swamp this Saturday and that number has dropped below the field goal to -2.5 with money on the home side. However, some oddsmakers thought the line should be higher, recommending the Tigers as big as 6-point chalk in Gainesville.

Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, says all five of his college football oddsmakers had LSU higher than a 2.5-point favorite when they crunched the numbers Sunday. Korner says LSU’s slide in the polls and Florida’s 4-0 record have books trimming the opening spread.

“It’s a combo of everything,” he says. “We were obviously a little high with the number but those early moves are sharp money moves – not the betting public. And the fact that it has slipped below the key number of three, we’ll see this go back up."

“If you’re betting the favorite, you want to wait this one out. It’s all Florida money right now, there hasn't been any on LSU. But they have their following and their money.”

Here are the opening odds for some of Week 6’s biggest games:

Oklahoma Sooners at Texas Tech Red Raiders (+5)

The Sooners have had two weeks to put the upset loss to Kansas State behind them and focus on Texas Tech. Oklahoma opened as a 4-point road favorite and early money on OU has bumped the spread to -5 as of Monday morning.

There is an aura of revenge for this Saturday’s Big 12 battle as well. The Red Raiders defeated the Sooners 41-38 as 29-point underdogs last October, snapping Oklahoma’s 39-game home winning streak and dousing OU’s national title hopes.

Georgia Bulldogs at South Carolina Gamecocks (-2.5)

The Sports Club sent out South Carolina as a field-goal favorite for this SEC showdown. Books agreed and opened the Gamecocks -3, taking early money on the Bulldogs to shrink the spread to -2.5 as of Monday morning.

The winner of this battle of unbeaten programs will have the inside track in the SEC East, especially if Florida falls to LSU. The Gamecocks have won the last two meetings with the Bulldogs SU and ATS, and are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five encounters.

Nebraska Cornhuskers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-4.5)

Without the promise of a postseason, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer may struggle for motivation at times this season. But, Week 6 isn’t one of those times. The undefeated Buckeyes welcome No. 20 Nebraska to Columbus and books have tabbed them as 4.5-point favorites. The Huskers topped OSU, 34-27, at home last October, coming back from a 27-6 third-quarter deficit.

The Sports Club sent out a suggested spread of OSU -3.5 and it seems bettors agree with that number, taking the opening spread of -5 down to -4.5 as of Monday morning. The Cornhuskers escaped with a three-point win over Wisconsin at home last weekend and head to Ohio for just their second road game of season so far. Nebraska fell 36-30 to UCLA the last time they left Lincoln.
