    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Updated odds to win the college football national title.........

Alabama, 8-5-- Can anyone challenge them before the LSU
    game?

LSU, 4-1-- Our man Les Miles needs better quarterback play.

Florida State, 6-1-- Its been understated how smoothly transition from Bobby Bowden to Jimbo Fisher went. Bowden is a classy guy.

Oregon, 7-1-- Civil War game with Beavers will be excellent this year.

Georgia, 9-1-- Next week's game with South Carolina is a biggie.

USC 12-1-- Have feeling Jim Mora is going to revive innercity rivalry in LA. Trojans-Bruins will be worth watching.

    *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.....

    13) This is first time in four years I’m not taking a Vegas vacation in October; going to hunker down and prepare for college hoop, hopefully watch my A’s in the playoffs and help my dad after he has cataract surgery. Going to Vegas the week before Christmas, though, to see my first-ever bowl game and celebrate my birthday. Damn, I'm getting old(er).....lol

    12) Speaking of Las Vegas in October, remember sitting in a sportsbook in '09, watching Texas-Oklahoma game and seeing Sam Bradford getting tossed around by the Longhorns and thinking, “I feel sorry for whatever NFL team gets him”, since he had a bum shoulder at the time. Whoops.

Truth is, Sam has played well enough for the Rams when he is allowed to stand up. They have to get better linemen in front of him, which is me being Captain Obvious. The draft picks they got for RGIII will allow those and other holes to be filled with quality players.

    11) NFL TV analysts have become suck-ups; I don’t care, Joe Flacco is not yet an elite QB, if elite still means what I think it means. Elite would be top 5: is Flacco better than Brady-Brees-Rodgers or either Manning brother? Roethlisberger? Matt Ryan? Rivers? Didn’t think so.

    10) We all complain about TV announcers, but Mike Tirico does football-basketball-golf and is really good at all three, probably better than Jim Nantz at all but golf.

    9) If you’re on Twitter and you want to laugh a few times a day, follow pro wrestler Al Snow (@therealAlSnow). The man is clever.

    8) Good news from the NBA: referee Greg Willard, who was diagnosed with cancer last June, plans to work this season. We need all the good news we can get.

    7) If you like to gamble and lets face it, who doesn’t, West Virginia QB Geno Smith is a 24.5-yard favorite over Baylor QB Nick Florence in passing yardage for this week’s game in Morgantown.

    6) 62% of bettors took the American side in the Ryder Cup, even though the Europeans usually win. Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it. Americans do lead 5-3 after the first day.

    5) Are individual players’ records in the Ryder Cup random or meaningful? If they’re meaningful, why is Jim Furyk (8-15-4 career in Ryder Cup) on the team? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.

    4) 7-11 stores gave away coffee for four hours Friday morning, which would’ve been better for me, if I actually drank coffee. I’ve never had it once in my life. Not even sure why, except that when I was a kid, I thought coffee grounds looked like mud, and why would anyone drink something that came from mud?

    3) NFL players can get fined serious money for wearing unlicensed gear to press conferences. Tom Brady has been covering up the Nike swoosh on his workout gear with tape during meetings with the press. Brady has a deal with Under Armour.

    2) I tweeted a Ryder Cup question to Alan Shipnuck of Sports Illustrated Thursday: “Do Ryder Cuppers ever request not to be paired with a certain player?”

His reply: “Hell to the yes. No one wanted Wetterich.” There you go. Wonder why no one likes Brett Wetterich?

    1) Two weeks until college basketball practice starts. Calendar year seems to be condensing, college hoop starting nine days after baseball ends. Armadillo World HQ turns into a college hoop library starting Thursday.

Big week here next week, with A's trying to make the playoffs and Rams on the NFL Network game Thursday night, then a three-day weekend!!!

NASCAR betting: AAA 400 preview and picks

Right now it’s Jimmie Johnson’s world, 11 other drivers just live in it.

After two solid second-place finishes in the opening rounds of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup, Johnson is now atop the points lead as he and the rest of the field head to Dover International Raceway for Sunday’s AAA 400.

Based on momentum and history, Johnson comes in as the favorite and the driver everyone else will be chasing. Should Johnson continue his roll this week most of the field could be just along for the ride for the rest of the Chase.

Johnson won here in June and leads all active drivers with seven wins including four in the last eight races at Dover. During that span he has also scored six Top-5 finishes and has led 54 percent of the laps he’s raced at the one-mile oval.

“The intensity you have to drive Dover with, it really fits my style,” Johnson told the media. “It’s the closest track we have to being airborne each lap with the drop off into turns one and three. It’s just cool; you’ve got to bring your big boy pants every lap there and I love it.”

Brad Keselowski could have quite the challenge this week. After winning the opening round at Chicagoland, BK finished sixth last Sunday at New Hampshire. He fell from first place in the standings and his history at Dover doesn’t bode well for any sort of comeback, at least not this week. In five starts Keselowski has never finished better than 12.

“I think it’s really easy to allow yourself to get psyched-out by looking at previous stats or even practice and qualifying stats and it doesn’t seem to be the case,” Keselowski said. “It’s really hard to give a great answer on who’s going to be good where. Our previous history has shown that we have not run well at Dover but I’m optimistic that can change.”

Denny Hamlin has struggled here as well. Last week’s New Hampshire winner would be hard pressed to follow up that win this week. Hamlin has finished 20th or worse in his last five starts here and was 18th in June.

Tony Stewart has little reason to look forward to Sunday. The last two trips here he has finished 25th each time. Stewart knows his chances for a win Sunday are slim, and he has just one goal.

“Dover has been the track where we’ve struggled the most,” Stewart said. “I think that’s the one we have to look at and say, ‘This is one that we have to figure out and do better if we’re going to have a shot at this.’ We have to survive there.”

Kasey Kahne was ninth here in June. He’s never won here and has a record of one top-five, five top-10 and six DNFs. If Kahne can find some of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates magic, he could surprise but don’t look for it.

Clint Bowyer was fifth in the June race and has two top 10s prior to that. He’s been the frontrunner at Michael Waltrip Racing in his first year there and he could easily improve on his fifth place from June and go all the way Sunday.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fourth here in June and will need to hope for similar success here Sunday. Prior to his June appearance in the top five, Earnhardt finished outside the top 20 in four of the last six races, his other finish was a 12th last summer.

Kevin Harvick needs nothing short of a miracle to get back in the Chase. He was second here in June but prior to that had three top ten finishes. If he can stage a repeat performance from June he might have a shot of winning his first Dover race Sunday. If the team is off their game like they have been since the Chase started however, don’t count on a visit to victory lane for Harvick Sunday.

Greg Biffle does have two wins here but has finished outside the top 10 in three of the last four races, including an 11th in June. In this race last year, Biffle was 27th. Although Roush-Fenway Racing has been strong here in the past, Biffle has not led the way recently.

Martin Truex Jr. scored his first career win here at Dover in 2007. Since then he’s struggled scoring only three top 10s since then including a seventh here in June. A favorite entering the Chase, Truex continues to fall farther back and that should continue Sunday.

Matt Kenseth could lead Roush-Fenway Racing back to victory lane Sunday. While he has struggled in the Chase he has two wins here, the last coming last year. Since then he has a fifth and was third here in June. If Kenseth hopes to get back in the Chase he will have to win Sunday and has a pretty good shot at doing just that.

Jeff Gordon needs near divine intervention to climb out of the bottom of the Chase standings. He does have four wins here, second only to Johnson’s seven. Gordon’s last win however was in 2001 and in the last five Dover races he has finished outside the top 10. He was 13th here in June and would have to find that old magic he once had if he hopes to win.

      Non-Chasers

Carl Edwards finished 26th here in June after getting caught up in a crash. He was third in this race last year and finished in the top five in two of the last five races and had top 10s in the others. In his all or nothing mode however, Edwards could very well find his way to victory lane Sunday and spoil the Chasers party.

Keep an eye on: Marcos Ambrose finished third here in the spring race last year and has two top 10s since including 10th in June. Ambrose seems to be learning his way around Dover and could be a surprise Sunday.

      Bottom Line:

52 races at Dover have been won from a top-five starting position; 18 races have been won from a starting position outside the top 10.13 drivers have won from the pole. The last to do so was Jimmie Johnson, in the 2010 September race. The furthest back in the field a race winner has started was 37th, by Kyle Petty in 1995.

        Saturday's Games

Toronto (6-6) @ Winnipeg (3-9)-- What does it say that Winnipeg is favored for the first time all season? 4th road game in five weeks for Argos, who lost last two games 28-23/31-10; they beat hapless Bombers 25-22 (-7.5) back in Week 4, in Winnipeg's 4th straight road game to start season. Bombers completed just 9 of 34 passes in that game, albeit for 185 yards. Bombers aren't good team, but they split last four home games, covering all four- two of their three wins are over Hamilton, third by a point over Edmonton. Four of last five Winnipeg games stayed under the total.

BCLions (9-3) @ Saskatchewan (6-6)-- Home side won both series meetings in '12, with Lions (-2.5) losing 23-20 here way back in Week 3, then beating Riders 24-5 in rematch five weeks later (-6.5). BC won three in row, seven of last eight games; they are 4-2 SU on road, but 2-4 as road faves, with wins on the road by 26-9-1-3 points. Roughriders started season 3-0, then lost five in row, but now won three of last four games- they're 4-2 at home, with only losses by point to Hamilton, 7 to Calgary. Seven of BC's last ten games stayed under the total.

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-3, 50.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers try to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they welcome the Toronto Argonauts Saturday. The Bombers snapped a four-game slide last week with a 34-12 victory over Hamilton, but Winnipeg (3-9) is still in last place in the East with just six points.

Argonatus first-year head coach Scott Milanovich announced Jarious Jackson as his starting QB this weekend because of the injury suffered by first-stringer Ricky Ray against Montreal last week. Toronto is 4-1 ATS in its last five road games.

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (2.5, 48)

The Lions try for a fourth straight win this weekend when they clash with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium. QB Travis Lulay threw for 260 yards and a TD in last week’s win over Edmonton, which means he has tossed for at least one score in every game this season and 23 in a row dating back to last season.

Roughriders QB Darian Durant hasn’t enjoyed much success against BC in his career. The signal-caller hasn’t thrown a single TD pass and has been picked off five times over his last four matchups with the Lions, who are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with Saskatchewan. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the clubs.

                  STREAKING

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (16-8, 2.72)

Verlander recorded his third straight victory after striking out eight in as many innings in a 6-2 triumph over Kansas City on Monday. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and MVP improved to 11-7 in his career versus the Twins after pitching a complete-game gem on July 4. Verlander permitted one run on four hits and struck out seven in the 5-1 victory.

Jordan Zimmermann, Washington Nationals (12-8, 2.90)

Zimmermann gave up one run over 6 2/3 innings against Milwaukee last Monday to win back-to-back games for the first time since his two starts following the All-Star break. Zimmermann, who has allowed less than three runs in four straight outings, is 7-5 with a 2.23 ERA in 15 starts on the road this season.

                  SLUMPING

Justin Germano, Chicago Cubs (2-9, 6.18)

Germano has taken the loss in each of his last seven starts and is running out of time to secure himself a spot in Chicago’s future. The 30-year-old right-hander has not completed six innings in any of those seven starts and is coming off an effort against St. Louis last Sunday in which he allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 frames. Germano, who has bounced around the majors and minors over the last several seasons, has faced Arizona five times in his career, going 2-1 with a 5.24 ERA.

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (10-8, 4.40)

Halladay had won six of his previous seven decisions before a disastrous outing against the Braves last Saturday. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits with three walks. Halladay is 2-1 in three starts against Miami with a 3.98 ERA.
