    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

College football trends to consider, with Week 4 upon us...........

-- Underdog covered seven of last nine Northwestern-Indiana games.

-- East Carolina covered 13 of last 19 as a home favorite.

-- Oregon State won/covered 11 of last 13 against Arizona.

-- UConn is 14-8 vs spread in non-conference home games.

-- Colorado is 10-5-1 in last 16 games as a home underdog.

-- Home side covered four of last five Tennessee-Georgia games.

    ******

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend........

    13) Hey, the regular refs are back; good for the NFL and good for the refs. Common sense finally prevails. Now the refs need to snap into mid-season form without any preseason activity. Most anything will be better than what we just had.

    12) Oregon State is 2-0, beating Wisconsin/UCLA; now they’re a 2-point dog at Arizona, which just lost 49-0 at Oregon. Interesting game for Mike Riley’s Beavers, who went to In ‘n Out Burger as a team after beating the Bruins in Westwood last week.

    11) A’s come home after surviving an epic 10-game road swing; they host the Mariners, and miss King Felix/Iwakuma. Meanwhile the Angels are in Texas, the Rays are in Chicago and Baltimore will be hosting the Red Sox, who bagged this season a long time ago. Going to be an interesting finish.

    10) Raider coach Dennis Allen was Denver’s DC LY, when the Broncos weren’t quite as well-stocked at QB as they are now, but Oakland has won its last four visits to Denver. Fascinating game out west.

    9) Total in Baylor-West Virginia game is 81.5, but its supposed to rain in the east all weekend. Without knowing for sure, I’m guessing the Waco-to-Morgantown road trip isn’t a lot of fun.

    8) Will Miguel Cabrera win the Triple Crown? No one has done it since Carl Yaztrzemski in 1967, and he was also in a pennant race.

    7) Huge trap game for Seahawks, who got handed a win by replacement refs on their way out the door Monday night; now they visit a gritty but offensive-challenged Rams squad that will spring the upset if they can keep Sam Bradford upright better than the Packers did for Aaron Rodgers.

    6) When the Penn State/NCAA debacle broke out, Illinois sent its whole coaching staff to State College, to try and poach Nittany Lion players who wanted to jump ship- they got one kid. Am guessing their legal but overly enthusiastic recruiting didn’t go over too well with the PSU coaches. The post-game handshake Saturday could be interesting.

    5) I feel bad the NHL won’t be starting on time; I enjoy hockey and there are regular folks (vendors, ticket takers, etc) who need the work to support their families. Hopefully, they won’t stay dark the entire season.

    4) Eagles turned ball over 12 times already, now they play Giants/ Steelers next two weeks, as you hear rumblings that young Nick Foles could be under center soon in Philly. The Sunday night game will be interesting.

    3) Minnesota/Northwestern are both 4-0; Gophers are a 7-point dog at struggling Iowa. Can Minnesota keep its Cinderella season going?

    2) Buccaneers fired Raheem Morris after last season, but he’s back in Tampa this week, coaching the Redskins’ secondary. Washington is a fun team with RGIII at QB, but they’re still just 1-2. This is a game they should win.

    1) How will Packers bounce back on a short week, after getting screwed Monday night? 0-3 Saints come to town with no head coach and one of the worst defenses in modern history. Bet the regular refs get a warm welcome at Lambeau.

NASCAR betting: AAA 400 preview and picks

Right now it’s Jimmie Johnson’s world, 11 other drivers just live in it.

After two solid second-place finishes in the opening rounds of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup, Johnson is now atop the points lead as he and the rest of the field head to Dover International Raceway for Sunday’s AAA 400.

Based on momentum and history, Johnson comes in as the favorite and the driver everyone else will be chasing. Should Johnson continue his roll this week most of the field could be just along for the ride for the rest of the Chase.

Johnson won here in June and leads all active drivers with seven wins including four in the last eight races at Dover. During that span he has also scored six Top-5 finishes and has led 54 percent of the laps he’s raced at the one-mile oval.

“The intensity you have to drive Dover with, it really fits my style,” Johnson told the media. “It’s the closest track we have to being airborne each lap with the drop off into turns one and three. It’s just cool; you’ve got to bring your big boy pants every lap there and I love it.”

Brad Keselowski could have quite the challenge this week. After winning the opening round at Chicagoland, BK finished sixth last Sunday at New Hampshire. He fell from first place in the standings and his history at Dover doesn’t bode well for any sort of comeback, at least not this week. In five starts Keselowski has never finished better than 12.

“I think it’s really easy to allow yourself to get psyched-out by looking at previous stats or even practice and qualifying stats and it doesn’t seem to be the case,” Keselowski said. “It’s really hard to give a great answer on who’s going to be good where. Our previous history has shown that we have not run well at Dover but I’m optimistic that can change.”

Denny Hamlin has struggled here as well. Last week’s New Hampshire winner would be hard pressed to follow up that win this week. Hamlin has finished 20th or worse in his last five starts here and was 18th in June.

Tony Stewart has little reason to look forward to Sunday. The last two trips here he has finished 25th each time. Stewart knows his chances for a win Sunday are slim, and he has just one goal.

“Dover has been the track where we’ve struggled the most,” Stewart said. “I think that’s the one we have to look at and say, ‘This is one that we have to figure out and do better if we’re going to have a shot at this.’ We have to survive there.”

Kasey Kahne was ninth here in June. He’s never won here and has a record of one top-five, five top-10 and six DNFs. If Kahne can find some of his Hendrick Motorsports teammates magic, he could surprise but don’t look for it.

Clint Bowyer was fifth in the June race and has two top 10s prior to that. He’s been the frontrunner at Michael Waltrip Racing in his first year there and he could easily improve on his fifth place from June and go all the way Sunday.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fourth here in June and will need to hope for similar success here Sunday. Prior to his June appearance in the top five, Earnhardt finished outside the top 20 in four of the last six races, his other finish was a 12th last summer.

Kevin Harvick needs nothing short of a miracle to get back in the Chase. He was second here in June but prior to that had three top ten finishes. If he can stage a repeat performance from June he might have a shot of winning his first Dover race Sunday. If the team is off their game like they have been since the Chase started however, don’t count on a visit to victory lane for Harvick Sunday.

Greg Biffle does have two wins here but has finished outside the top 10 in three of the last four races, including an 11th in June. In this race last year, Biffle was 27th. Although Roush-Fenway Racing has been strong here in the past, Biffle has not led the way recently.

Martin Truex Jr. scored his first career win here at Dover in 2007. Since then he’s struggled scoring only three top 10s since then including a seventh here in June. A favorite entering the Chase, Truex continues to fall farther back and that should continue Sunday.

Matt Kenseth could lead Roush-Fenway Racing back to victory lane Sunday. While he has struggled in the Chase he has two wins here, the last coming last year. Since then he has a fifth and was third here in June. If Kenseth hopes to get back in the Chase he will have to win Sunday and has a pretty good shot at doing just that.

Jeff Gordon needs near divine intervention to climb out of the bottom of the Chase standings. He does have four wins here, second only to Johnson’s seven. Gordon’s last win however was in 2001 and in the last five Dover races he has finished outside the top 10. He was 13th here in June and would have to find that old magic he once had if he hopes to win.

      Non-Chasers

Carl Edwards finished 26th here in June after getting caught up in a crash. He was third in this race last year and finished in the top five in two of the last five races and had top 10s in the others. In his all or nothing mode however, Edwards could very well find his way to victory lane Sunday and spoil the Chasers party.

Keep an eye on: Marcos Ambrose finished third here in the spring race last year and has two top 10s since including 10th in June. Ambrose seems to be learning his way around Dover and could be a surprise Sunday.

      Bottom Line:

52 races at Dover have been won from a top-five starting position; 18 races have been won from a starting position outside the top 10.13 drivers have won from the pole. The last to do so was Jimmie Johnson, in the 2010 September race. The furthest back in the field a race winner has started was 37th, by Kyle Petty in 1995.

Canadian Bacon: Week 14 CFL betting preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1, 58)

The Als have rattled off six wins in seven opportunities in order to assume the top spot in the East Division where they hold a four-point advantage over Toronto heading into play this week. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo has thrown for no less than 329 yards and has a total of 10 touchdowns over his last four games against the Tiger-Cats, but Montreal failed to covered in each of those contests.

Hamilton has only one victory in its last seven games and sits four games under .500 despite leading the league in scoring (30 points per game). Quarterback Henry Burris’ 27 TD passes are also tops in the league, but it hasn’t been enough because of a crumbling defense that ranks dead last in the CFL in preventing points (31.8 ppg).

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-4.5, 48.5)

The Edmonton Eskimos have serious injury concerns at quarterback. Both regular starter Steven Jyles and backup Kerry Joseph are dealing with injuries and have been inconsistent when healthy this season. Third-stringer Matt Nichols was awarded the majority of practice time at QB this week and could get the nod Friday.

Not only did the Stampeders have their four-game winning streak snapped by Saskatchewan last week, but RB Jon Cornish was fined by the league for “mooning” some Rider fans in the process. Calgary head coach John Hufnagel said he will also discipline Cornish, who has racked up 1,118 yards from scrimmage this season, for his outlandish behavior. Whether that action has any bearing on his playing time this week remains to be seen. The Stampeders are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-3, 50.5)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers try to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they welcome the Toronto Argonauts Saturday. The Bombers snapped a four-game slide last week with a 34-12 victory over Hamilton, but Winnipeg (3-9) is still in last place in the East with just six points.

Argonatus first-year head coach Scott Milanovich announced Jarious Jackson as his starting QB this weekend because of the injury suffered by first-stringer Ricky Ray against Montreal last week. Toronto is 4-1 ATS in its last five road games.

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (2.5, 48)

The Lions try for a fourth straight win this weekend when they clash with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium. QB Travis Lulay threw for 260 yards and a TD in last week’s win over Edmonton, which means he has tossed for at least one score in every game this season and 23 in a row dating back to last season.

Roughriders QB Darian Durant hasn’t enjoyed much success against BC in his career. The signal-caller hasn’t thrown a single TD pass and has been picked off five times over his last four matchups with the Lions, who are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with Saskatchewan. The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the clubs.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  STREAKING

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (6-8, 3.18)

After winning just three starts in his first five months, Lee is 3-1 in September with a 0.99 ERA. The left-hander has struck out 21 hitters in 16 innings in his past two starts. Lee is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in two starts against Miami this season.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (19-4, 2.74)

Weaver has won his last three starts to keep himself in the Cy Young Award discussion. He held the Chicago White Sox to one run over 6 1/3 innings in his last outing, setting a career high for wins. After losing his first start against the Rangers this year, Weaver has won the last three meetings to improve to 12-7 with a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts against Texas.

                  SLUMPING

                  A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics (6-1, 2.80)

After winning six straight, Griffin has struggled in his last two outings. The 24-year-old rookie permitted nine runs on 15 hits - including four homers - to earn a pair of early exits. Griffin pitched well in his lone outing versus Seattle, allowing one run and striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings in a 6-1 triumph on Sept. 7.

Aaron Cook, Boston Red Sox (4-10, 5.13)

Cook received a no-decision against the Orioles last Saturday despite giving up five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He defeated Tampa Bay in his previous start to end a five-game losing skid. Cook is 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA in three starts against Baltimore, all coming this season.
