    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends to ponder, with Week 4 upon us...........

-- Vikings covered only seven of their last 21 road games.

-- Houston is 6-2 vs spread in last 8 games as AFC South home favorite. -- Lions covered only twice in their last seven home games.

-- Atlanta covered 10 of last 15 games as a divisional favorite.

-- Ravens are 2-6-1 vs spread in last nine AFC North home games.

-- Raiders covered nine of last 12 games vs Broncos, winning SU in last four visits to Denver.

    *******

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

    13) On June 1st, the A’s and Astros were both 22-30; Houston now has 105 losses, while my A’s desperately try to hold on to the last Wild Card spot in the AL, in what has been the most unlikely and inspirational season in my 47 years of rooting for the green-and-gold.

Problem is, our leadoff hitter has pink eye, our best pitcher a fractured skull, and the team we play most of the rest of our games against, Texas, spent $100M on one player (Yu Darvish). The A’s entire payroll is $55M. For the whole team.

    12) With rosters expanded this month, Rangers have 18 pitchers on their roster; in the playoffs, they’ll only have 12 or 13. Would September be a lot different if teams couldn't expand rosters on September 1st?

    11) Why is BYU an independent in football? Other than keeping all their bowl revenue in event they hit it big in the BCS, how does it help them?

    10) Anytime ESPN.com’s baseball writer Buster Olney gets stuck for a story, he resorts to his old template: Who will “best pitcher” on “small market team” be traded to? This time it was David Price; in past, its been Zito-Hudson-Mulder-Haren-Felix Hernandez-Lee-Beckett. Some get traded, some don’t. As a fan of a small market team, it has gotten very old.

    9) I don’t give rat’s ass about the Ryder Cup; does anyone, other than the golfers involved? I’m guessing Eldrick Woods isn’t too fired up, other than fact that his sponsors are probably into it.

    8) Greedy bastard update: Gas went down 6 cents a gallon here over the weekend, down to a hefty $4.10 a gallon. Forgot to ask the guy at the counter if employees get a discount from their greedy bastard bosses when they fill up. I'm guessing they do not.

    7) A's set a record for strikeouts Wednesday night, which means very little; every team makes at least 24 outs a game, most make 27. As long as teams hit in clutch, run bases well and have certain amount of power, what is the difference how they make their 24 or 27 outs a game?

    6) As part of its deal with the ACC, Notre Dame will play five football games a year vs ACC opponents; they already play BC every year, so to clear room for the other four games, Fighting Irish have ended their series with Michigan, starting in 2015. Can't wait for those thrilling games with the Fighting Irish against Syracuse and Duke. Outstanding.

    5) If you owned a major league baseball franchise, would you give Josh Hamilton a guaranteed deal worth over $100M? With his history, not even sure I want him on my fantasy team. This is only second time he's played in more than 133 games, but he does put up big numbers.

    4) 70% of the legal betting action in Nevada Monday night was on the Packers, so when Green Bay won the game, Nevada sportsbooks cleaned house, since Monday night games are the heaviest bet games of the week. I’m not inferring anything there, just reporting a fact.

    3) I would like to see a scientific test of the differences between Sprite and Mountain Dew. I can’t tell the difference between the two. I can tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi-- RC Cola is better than both.

    2) At the start of this baseball season, I had four Miami Marlins on my fantasy team; told someone its important for my team that the Marlins have a good year—well, didn’t work out that way. At this point, if no one kills anyone else, their season will be a minor success.

What a dysfunctional group they put together. The team president is the owner’s stepson, so he’s probably the only person we know will be back in 2013. As bad as my fantasy team turned out to be this year, they were a lot better than these Marlins.

    1) There's been so much action this month, no way wonder the month has flown by: A’s in their first pennant race in six years, Rams have been revitalized (hopefully) under Jeff Fisher, all the football handicapping, keeping up with all the baseball, even my ride to work has been a bit of an adventure, since the street I normally drive to work on has been shut down all month due to construction.

As a friend of mine told me, "You're stressed, but its a good stressed." He is right; beats the hell out of being bored most days.

A's have a 2-game lead with a week to go; got to hang on!!!!

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    STREAKING

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (12-11, 4.35)

Haren has won back-to-back starts and four of his last five. He defeated the Chicago White in his last start when he gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. Haren’s top outing of the season was May 24 against Seattle when he struck out a career-best 14 while tossing a four-hit shutout. He is 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in three starts against the Mariners this season. Haren is 12-6 with a 2.57 ERA in 22 career starts against Seattle.

Barry Zito, San Francisco Giants (13-8, 4.18)

After being left off the Giants’ postseason roster in 2010, Zito has secured a spot this year after a strong campaign. He held Arizona to one run in 6 2/3 innings last Saturday, and he’s 3-0 with a 3.17 ERA in his last five starts. Zito has gone 6-8 with a 5.01 ERA in 20 career games against the Diamondbacks.

                    SLUMPING

Travis Blackley, Oakland Athletics (5-3, 3.75)

Blackley lasted just two innings against the New York Yankees last Saturday, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks. He is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in three starts against the Rangers this season. Overall, he is 2-1 with a 5.16 ERA in four career starts against Texas.

Patrick Corbin, Arizona Diamondbacks (6-7, 4.36)

Corbin turned in his shortest outing of the season last Saturday against the Rockies, giving up five runs over three innings. He’s struggled over the past month with just one win in his last six starts and a 5.91 ERA over that stretch. Corbin took a no-decision in his last start against the Giants on Sept. 3 after allowing four runs over five frames.
