    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 700+ contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

    5) New Jersey Jets, 181
    4) Detroit Lions, 191
    3) Atlanta Falcons, 193
    2) San Francisco 49ers, 197
    1) Arizona Cardinals, 255

    26) Chicago Bears, 65
    27) Tennessee Titans, 60

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up an active sports Saturday.........

    13) Florida State looked really, really good in ringing up 667 yards on a good Clemson team, pulling away to beat the Tigers 49-37. Clemson led by 10 points in the second half before the Seminoles got hot.

    12) Central Michigan scored 9 points in game's last 0:45 as Chippewas went to Iowa City and stunned a lackluster Hawkeye squad, 32-31.

Somewhere, Central Michigan alum Dick Enberg is smiling.

    11) When was last time Northwestern/Minnesota were both 4-0?

    10) Oregon State won at UCLA, then the whole team went to In 'n Out Burger before heading back to Corvallis. Beavers deserve to be ranked this week, starting season off by beating Wisconsin/UCLA.

    9) Army scored 40-37 points the last two weeks, but somehow lost both games- they lost 49-37 at Wake Forest, in game where total yardage was in favor of the Deacons, but not by much (517-506).

    8) 84,923 suckers paid to see Nebraska lay waste to Idaho State, 73-7; do they charge as much for that game as they do for their conference games? It is embarrassing that teams like Nebraska play I-AA teams, and in no way are they only ones. Florida State played two of those stiffs this month.

    7) So Duke plays Memphis in football; why not play them in basketball, too? Oh thats right, Memphis could beat them in basketball. Memphis is awful in football, and has been since they fired Tommy West.

    6) Good comeback by Colorado, 69-14 losers at Fresno State last week; they were down 31-14 in 4th quarter at Washington State yesterday, before a late rally gave the Buffs a wild 35-34 win in Pullman.

    5) Rutgers already has three road wins; by the way, interesting story this week about how awful lot of NFL types despise Bucs' coach Greg Schiano, for his poor treatment of NFL scouts while he was coaching Rutgers. Will be interesting to see how the Bucs going forward from here.

    4) Miami Hurricanes were 31-52/436 passing, rang up 609 total yards in a 42-36 OT win at Georgia Tech, a game Tech once led 36-19, after Miami had raced to a 19-0 lead. Not often you score 36 points in a row and lose.

    3) The wheels have completely fallen off at Arkansas, which lost 35-26 at home to Rutgers. Game opened as a pick 'em in Vegas last Sunday, but so much action came in on Arkansas that it was taken off board and re-posted at Hogs -7. 72,543 Arkansas fans went home very unhappy.

    2) Fresno State scored two defensive TDs at Tulsa, but missed the PAT after both TDs, and wound up losing 27-26 to Golden Hurricane. Looks as if Fresno State has an improved team.

    1) Congrats to the Reds/Giants, who clinched their divisions in baseball last night; 11 days to go in the season, still much to be decided. Best wishes to Cincy manager Dusty Baker-- get well soon.

When I was 15, I met Dusty Baker at Shea Stadium while he was out of the lineup for the Braves with a broken wrist. Terrific guy and a good manager.

Sylvania 300 betting preview: Round 2 of The Chase

It’s time for round two of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup. This week’s stop at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, also known as the Magic Mile, for Sunday’s Sylvania 300 could help further shake up the top runners, or help separate the contenders from the rest of the field.

      The Favorites:

Brad Keselowski scored a decisive win over favorite Jimmie Johnson in round one last week at Chicagoland. The win vaulted BK to the top of the points for the first time in his career and put other drivers on notice.

This is the first track in the Chase that was visited by the series once already this season; in that July race Keselowski finished fifth. He also placed second in this race last season, so he’s certainly a contender.

“The points lead is nice. It means we won the first race in a 10-race playoff format,” Keselowski said. “But that’s really about all. I refuse to let it sink in because there is so much work left to be done. We need to keep our eyes looking forward. I’m going to focus on the next nine races. It would be a disservice to Sunday’s win if we allow our focus to get away from tomorrow’s workload.”

Jimmie Johnson left Chicagoland a little stung. After leading the most laps he was beaten by Keselowski in the closing laps. Johnson heads to New Hampshire, where he has three career wins, looking for redemption. His last win came here in 2010. Since then he has struggled somewhat though; he finished 18 here last season and was seventh in July.

“It’s tough because the balance when you have clean air and the whole race track to yourself you need a race car to drive a certain way,” Johnson said. “When you get in traffic you need the car to turn a lot stronger to run a tighter radius and inside of someone. It’s tough to blend those two worlds. That is the thing we fight so much is we work in practice running by ourselves. You get in the race you are rarely by yourself then trying to find a way to make your car work in traffic.”

Tony Stewart is coming off a sixth place finish last week a Chicagoland. While that may be a good finish during the regular season, now that the Chase is here, Stewart will need more. While he was 12th here in July, he is the defending winner of this race and has two second place finishes to go with that third career victory in his last five starts here. He leads the series driver ratings and is always tough here; Stewart will slip into the role of favorite this week.

Denny Hamlin won here in 2007 and was second in July. After running out of fuel last week and coasting to a 16th place finish last week and an 18th the week prior, Hamlin will need to step up his game this week in order to stop his downward fall in the standings.

Kasey Kahne won this race in July but finished outside the top 10 in three of the last five races. In his second race here in Hendrick Motorsports equipment, Kahne could be the driver to beat this week. Season sweeps aren’t unheard of here, but the last time that happened was in 2004, when Kurt Busch won both events.

“It feels really good to go back to New Hampshire during the Chase,” Kahne said. “The win in July was a big turning point for the team and should give everyone some more confidence this weekend. I think we found a good setup for the car last time, so we should have a good place to start from when we unload.”

Clint Bowyer has two wins here and finished third in July. Like Kahne he’s in new equipment and could be near the front Sunday.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has never won here but was fourth in July. He may not be among the favorites to win but should be among the top 10 or even top 5 finishers Sunday.

Greg Biffle won here in 2008 was third in this race last season and ninth in July. He’s struggled in the last few weeks finishing 13 last week at Chicagoland. Since his win here in 2008, Biffle has also struggled at New Hampshire finishing outside the top ten in four of the last seven races.

Martin Truex Jr. finished a career best third here in 2007. In the last five races though, he has finished outside the top ten in four.

Kevin Harvick was eighth in July and has two top five’s in the last five races. He was 12th and 21st in the two previous races and has finished outside the top ten in the last two weeks. Like Truex, Harvick would be a surprise winner Sunday.

Matt Kenseth has never won here and has finished outside the top 15 in three of the last five races. He was sixth in this race last year and 13th in July. Don’t look in victory lane to find Kenseth Sunday afternoon.

Jeff Gordon is tied with Johnson and Stewart in the Chase field for most wins here, three. He was sixth here in July and fourth last season. Gordon looked strong last week at Chicagoland before crashing out; he could easily find redemption with a win this week and shake up the point standings. If Gordon and his team are on their game, the rest of the field better be as well.

      Non-Chasers.

If a non-Chaser wins this week, that winner could very well be Ryan Newman. Newman holds the qualifying record here and won the pole for this race last year. In July he finished 10th and was the only driver among the top 10 who did not qualify for the Chase. He has three wins here the last coming in the first race here in 2011. With the way he runs here, Newman could spoil the Chase party on Sunday.

      Bottom line:

Hendrick Motorsports has won nine races here, more than any other organization. The deepest in the field that a New Hampshire race winner started was 38th, by Jeff Burton in 1999. There have been five winners who started from the pole. The last race winner to win from the pole was Ryan Newman last season.

      Favorites:
      Tony Stewart
      Brad Keselowski
      Jeff Gordon
      Non-Chase
      Ryan Newman

        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Week 13

Home (24-20). Favorites (19-25), Over (22-22). West 15-9 vs East.

        Sunday's Games
Toronto (6-5) @ Montreal (7-4)—Alouettes are 5-1 since losing 23-20 (-4.5) at home to Toronto back in Week 5, when Argos led 20-13 at half and hung on in defensive second half- Montreal threw season-high 42 passes that day (25-42) and had -2 turnover ratio. That is only Montreal loss in six home games (3-3 as home favorite) with three of five wins by 11+ points. Argonauts covered their last four road games (3-1 SU) with last week’s 28-23 loss at BC ending 3-game road winning streak. Underdogs covered seven of last eight Toronto tilts. Last three Toronto games and seven of last ten Alouette games went over the total.

Calgary (7-4) @ Saskatchewan (5-6)—Roughriders lost six of last eight games after 3-0 start, with only wins over lowly Winnipeg; their 23-20 OT loss (+3.5) at Calgary in Week 4 started them on downward spiral. Stampeders (+2.5) came to Regina in Week 9 and beat Riders 17-10, running ball for 185 yards. Riders are 2-4 vs spread as an underdog, 0-1 at home. Calgary won last four games after 3-4 start, with three of wins by 7 or less points; they’ve won last three away games SU, after losing first two road tilts by combined total of 4 points (Tor/Mtl). Stampeders covered only once in last six games as the favorite (underdog is 5-0 vs spread in their road games this year).

Canadian Bacon: Week 13 CFL betting preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Argonauts vs. Montreal Alouettes (-4, 54.5)

The Argos have covered the spread in three straight games, all of which played over the total. Toronto leads the league in penalties with 124 calls for 1,147 yards and the players held a meeting Tuesday in hopes of correcting the problem. To show how bad that number is, the Argos' leading receiver, Chad Owens, only has 938 yards this season.

Montreal is 5-1 in its last six games and is the lone team to beat B.C. over the Lions' past seven games. The bad news is that team leading rusher Brandon Whitaker is out for the season and key red zone receiver Brian Bratton is doubtful after injuries suffered last week. Montreal needs to win this game to stay ahead of Toronto for first place in the East.

Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders (+2, 50)

The Stamps have turned their season around by winning their past four games while covering the number in three of those. Tough defense has been a big factor in the success and seven of the last eight Calgary games have gone under the total.

Calgary running back Jon Cornish is the leading rusher in the CFL and Sasky head coach Corey Chamblin guaranteed this week that he wouldn't rush for 100 yards. The Riders own the No. 2 rush defense and scoring defense in the CFL but the Stamps have won the last six meetings and five of those against the spread.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Reds clinched the NL Central title Saturday with a 6-0 victory over the Dodgers. The two clubs square off again on Sunday Night Baseball.

                    HOMER HAPPY

Homer Bailey has been a streaky pitcher for the Reds this season. The righty has a respectable 12-9 record with a 3.82 ERA overall and has allowed just five earned runs over his last four starts. Bailey had surrendered 22 runs over a five-start span prior to his recent hot streak.

                    HARANG MEET YOUR FORMER TEAM

Former Cincinnati hurler Aaron Harang gets the ball for the Dodgers. He’s 9-10 with a 3.80 ERA but has suffered from control issues lately. The right-hander has walked more batters than he’s struck out in three of his last four starts. However, he has an uncanny ability to wiggle out of jams, holding opponents to three runs or less in eight straight games.

                    INJURY REPORT

The Dodgers’ playoff hopes may rest on the availability of staff ace Clayton Kershaw down the stretch. The lefty’s injured hip is adding to the strain already put on a depleted rotation by injuries. Ted Lilly and Chad Billingsley were in the mix, but both are done for the season with shoulder and elbow ailments. The Reds’ injury list is much shorter, but there is some concern about closer Aroldis Chapman’s fatigued throwing shoulder. The Cincinnati bullpen is already thin without the services of Nick Masset (shoulder) and Ryan Madson (elbow).

                    TRENDS

*Dodgers are 0-4 in Harang’s last four Sunday starts.
*The Reds have played over the total in Bailey’s last four starts vs. NL West opponents.
*Cincinnati is 25-10 in its last 35 Sunday games.

                    HITTERS TO WATCH

Ryan Ludwick is 14-for-36 vs. Harang.
Scott Rolen is 5-for-31 vs. Harang.
Adrian Gonzalez is 6-for-12 vs. Bailey.
Matt Kemp is 4-for-11 vs. Bailey.
