    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Milwaukee Brewers have moved within 1.5 games of the Cardinals for the last playoff spot; tremendous managing job by Ron Roenicke.

    -- Cardinals' record in 1-run games: 19-25. 2-run games: 6-14. games decided by 3+ runs: 65-32.

-- Baylor won 47-42 at UL-Monroe, but the Warhawks are a
fun team; I am hoping they get their first winning season in I-A-- they should.

-- Betting total in Oregon-Arizona game Saturday has been bet up from 72 to 79. Mark May said on ESPN Friday night it should go over.

-- Braves won Kris Medlen's last 21 starts, but only 10 of them came this year. Why didn't he make any starts this year until July 31, if they won his last eleven starts last year?

-- Cop in South Carolina gave Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney a ticket for speeding, posted details about it on a South Carolina message board, then lost his job for using PD's computer to post the message, or thats what they're saying. Either way, the guy lost his job.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

    13) Over first two weeks of NFL football, there were 197 red zone drives that resulted in 975 points, for an average of 4.95 yards/drive (excluding kneel down drives at end of games). To me, that should be how the NFL ranks red zone efficiency, points/drive, not TD percentage.

    12) Best red zone teams so far; Bills five drives, 35 points (7.), followed by Denver (6.3), Baltimore (6.2) and 49ers/Packers (6.).

    11) On other end of spectrum, Browns have two FGs on three red zone drives (2.0), making them the worst red zone team so far. Just above them are Rams/Seattle (3.71) and the Colts (3.86). Three rookie QBs and Sam Bradford, playing for his third OC in three years.

    10) There is a perception amongst gamblers that the replacement refs are helping the home teams, creating the reality of some Las Vegas books making home teams lay an extra half-point, or get a half-point less.

    9) My observation about the replacement refs is that most of them are intimidated, so teams should throw 80% of their pass plays towards their sidelines, where they can bitch at the refs on close plays and pick up an extra call or two. This would especially hold on critical third down plays. I’m not kidding; lot of times we’ve seen a guy on the sideline yell at the ref and then the ref reaches and throws a flag.

    8) Eli Manning completed eight passes for 243 yards in the 4th quarter alone vs Tampa Bay last week; shouldn’t the Cowboys come out in no-huddle against the Bucs this week?

    7) Peyton Manning is 0-5 with three INTs on passes that went 20+ yards downfield; it’s a small sample, but a situation worth following.

    6) 65 of 92 Super Bowl teams started that season 2-0; last 0-3 team to make the playoffs? The ’98 Buffalo Bills.

    5) Actor Ed O’Neill, who played Al Bundy on TV and the reporter in Blue Chips, was in training camp as a defensive lineman with the Steelers in 1969, same year Pitt drafted Joe Greene and LC Greenwood. Needless to say, O’Neill got cut, but he’s done alright for himself since.

    4) I had forgotten that Hubert Davis quit ESPN and is an assistant hoop coach at North Carolina. I’ll miss his pleasant nature on TV.

    3) What a basketball odyssey Darko Milicic has had; I was 100% wrong about him, thought he was going to be super in the Vlade Divac mold as a great-passing big man who was a terrific teammate.

It never happened and now he’s a journeyman bouncing from team to team, making a freakin’ fortune anyway. Darko will be on the Celtics this season; I still find myself rooting for him. He was so highly thought of the Pistons drafted him ahead of Dwyane Wade. Whoops.

    2) When you hear a pitcher has an oblique injury and Lord knows there are a lot of them, know that if the injury is on the same side as his pitching arm, its not as severe as if the injury is on the opposite side. You learn these kind of things when you root for the A’s.

    1) NFL almost fined Alex Smith $15,000 because he wore an SF Giants’ ballcap to a press conference; only thing that probably saved him was NFL’s new agreement with New ERA, which makes hats for both MLB and NFL. Giants’ skipper Bruce Bochy wore a 49ers’ cap to his press briefing the next day, to show support for Smith.

NFL takes its licensing agreements very, very seriously. Too bad they don’t take the officiating in their games that seriously.

Sylvania 300 betting preview: Round 2 of The Chase

It’s time for round two of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup. This week’s stop at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, also known as the Magic Mile, for Sunday’s Sylvania 300 could help further shake up the top runners, or help separate the contenders from the rest of the field.

      The Favorites:

Brad Keselowski scored a decisive win over favorite Jimmie Johnson in round one last week at Chicagoland. The win vaulted BK to the top of the points for the first time in his career and put other drivers on notice.

This is the first track in the Chase that was visited by the series once already this season; in that July race Keselowski finished fifth. He also placed second in this race last season, so he’s certainly a contender.

“The points lead is nice. It means we won the first race in a 10-race playoff format,” Keselowski said. “But that’s really about all. I refuse to let it sink in because there is so much work left to be done. We need to keep our eyes looking forward. I’m going to focus on the next nine races. It would be a disservice to Sunday’s win if we allow our focus to get away from tomorrow’s workload.”

Jimmie Johnson left Chicagoland a little stung. After leading the most laps he was beaten by Keselowski in the closing laps. Johnson heads to New Hampshire, where he has three career wins, looking for redemption. His last win came here in 2010. Since then he has struggled somewhat though; he finished 18 here last season and was seventh in July.

“It’s tough because the balance when you have clean air and the whole race track to yourself you need a race car to drive a certain way,” Johnson said. “When you get in traffic you need the car to turn a lot stronger to run a tighter radius and inside of someone. It’s tough to blend those two worlds. That is the thing we fight so much is we work in practice running by ourselves. You get in the race you are rarely by yourself then trying to find a way to make your car work in traffic.”

Tony Stewart is coming off a sixth place finish last week a Chicagoland. While that may be a good finish during the regular season, now that the Chase is here, Stewart will need more. While he was 12th here in July, he is the defending winner of this race and has two second place finishes to go with that third career victory in his last five starts here. He leads the series driver ratings and is always tough here; Stewart will slip into the role of favorite this week.

Denny Hamlin won here in 2007 and was second in July. After running out of fuel last week and coasting to a 16th place finish last week and an 18th the week prior, Hamlin will need to step up his game this week in order to stop his downward fall in the standings.

Kasey Kahne won this race in July but finished outside the top 10 in three of the last five races. In his second race here in Hendrick Motorsports equipment, Kahne could be the driver to beat this week. Season sweeps aren’t unheard of here, but the last time that happened was in 2004, when Kurt Busch won both events.

“It feels really good to go back to New Hampshire during the Chase,” Kahne said. “The win in July was a big turning point for the team and should give everyone some more confidence this weekend. I think we found a good setup for the car last time, so we should have a good place to start from when we unload.”

Clint Bowyer has two wins here and finished third in July. Like Kahne he’s in new equipment and could be near the front Sunday.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has never won here but was fourth in July. He may not be among the favorites to win but should be among the top 10 or even top 5 finishers Sunday.

Greg Biffle won here in 2008 was third in this race last season and ninth in July. He’s struggled in the last few weeks finishing 13 last week at Chicagoland. Since his win here in 2008, Biffle has also struggled at New Hampshire finishing outside the top ten in four of the last seven races.

Martin Truex Jr. finished a career best third here in 2007. In the last five races though, he has finished outside the top ten in four.

Kevin Harvick was eighth in July and has two top five’s in the last five races. He was 12th and 21st in the two previous races and has finished outside the top ten in the last two weeks. Like Truex, Harvick would be a surprise winner Sunday.

Matt Kenseth has never won here and has finished outside the top 15 in three of the last five races. He was sixth in this race last year and 13th in July. Don’t look in victory lane to find Kenseth Sunday afternoon.

Jeff Gordon is tied with Johnson and Stewart in the Chase field for most wins here, three. He was sixth here in July and fourth last season. Gordon looked strong last week at Chicagoland before crashing out; he could easily find redemption with a win this week and shake up the point standings. If Gordon and his team are on their game, the rest of the field better be as well.

      Non-Chasers.

If a non-Chaser wins this week, that winner could very well be Ryan Newman. Newman holds the qualifying record here and won the pole for this race last year. In July he finished 10th and was the only driver among the top 10 who did not qualify for the Chase. He has three wins here the last coming in the first race here in 2011. With the way he runs here, Newman could spoil the Chase party on Sunday.

      Bottom line:

Hendrick Motorsports has won nine races here, more than any other organization. The deepest in the field that a New Hampshire race winner started was 38th, by Jeff Burton in 1999. There have been five winners who started from the pole. The last race winner to win from the pole was Ryan Newman last season.

      Favorites:
      Tony Stewart
      Brad Keselowski
      Jeff Gordon
      Non-Chase
      Ryan Newman

Canadian Bacon: Week 13 CFL betting preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

British Columbia Lions vs. Edmonton Eskimos (+4, 46.5)

Edmonton brought in 'offensive advisor' David Kelly this week in an effort to kickstart a stalled attack. The Eskies have had a revolving door at quarterback and haven't had a rusher run for at least 50 yards in three games, all of which were losses.

B.C. isn't the team you want to face when you're struggling. The Lions have won six of their past seven (4-3 against the spread) and can beat you with offense or defense. They rank tops in the CFL in overall D and second in overall offense. They lost the first meeting with Edmonton this season 27-14, their lone home defeat.

Toronto Argonauts vs. Montreal Alouettes (-4, 54.5)

The Argos have covered the spread in three straight games, all of which played over the total. Toronto leads the league in penalties with 124 calls for 1,147 yards and the players held a meeting Tuesday in hopes of correcting the problem. To show how bad that number is, the Argos' leading receiver, Chad Owens, only has 938 yards this season.

Montreal is 5-1 in its last six games and is the lone team to beat B.C. over the Lions' past seven games. The bad news is that team leading rusher Brandon Whitaker is out for the season and key red zone receiver Brian Bratton is doubtful after injuries suffered last week. Montreal needs to win this game to stay ahead of Toronto for first place in the East.

Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders (+2, 50)

The Stamps have turned their season around by winning their past four games while covering the number in three of those. Tough defense has been a big factor in the success and seven of the last eight Calgary games have gone under the total.

Calgary running back Jon Cornish is the leading rusher in the CFL and Sasky head coach Corey Chamblin guaranteed this week that he wouldn't rush for 100 yards. The Riders own the No. 2 rush defense and scoring defense in the CFL but the Stamps have won the last six meetings and five of those against the spread.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  STREAKING

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (9-10, 4.31)

Minor allowed one run over six innings of a 5-1 win over the Nationals on Sunday. The right-hander has been on a roll lately, having only been touched up for jone run over his last three outings. He'll get the Phillies on the road in his next start.

Kevin Correia, Pittsburgh Pirates (11-9, 4.09)

Correia held the Cubs to just two hits over seven innings of shutout ball in his last appearance. The righty has made three quality starts in a row, only surrendering four earned runs during that stretch. Now he gets to toy with the lowly Astros on Saturday.

Saturday's betting tips: Big sluggers out, Wrigley winds

It's a busy weekend in sports. There's a full slate of college football and NFL as usual. We also have the Tour Championship, and MLB is in the closing stretch. Here are some notes to help you before you make your wagers.

As the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Matt Youman's writes, the underdog is 14-2 against the spread in the past 16 meetings between Michigan and Notre Dame. Domers are favored by 6 points.

Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton isn't traveling with the team to Seattle this weekend because of an unexplained sight issue. Texas lost Friday night 6-3 and GM Jon Daniels said "obviously we’re better when Josh is in the lineup.” Hamilton leads the majors with 42 home runs this season.

Dustin Johnson could be trying to win the Tour Championship with a new caddie. He had to make a caddie switch mid-round on Friday. Johnson is three shots back heading into Round 3 and is 11-1 to win after Round 2. He's also -111 to beat Matt Kuchar in 2-ball betting.

It's cold in Chicago, where the Cubs have played under the total in five straight games. The over/under is delayed as per normal for a Wrigley game. Fifty percent chance of rain today with winds blowing at 16 mph toward foul territory in right field. Similar wind last two days and the total is now 1-4 over/under on the season with those wind conditions.

"Georgia Tech is the only team with four plays of 70 yards or longer in the FBS this season and has produced eight touchdown plays of 30 yards or longer this season." Controlling the clock could be a key for Miami. Total is set at 61.5 today.

The Yankees are -150 faves against Oakland today but Curtis Granderson is expected to be out of the lineup. He leads the Yankees with 39 home runs. New York sits just one game ahead of the Orioles in the battle for first place in the AL East.

Wisconsin is an 18-point fave in an early one for traveling UTEP.
