    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Football trends, with Week 3 approaching.......

-- Pittsburgh Steelers covered only twice in last eleven away games.

-- Patriots covered six of last seven games as an underdog.

-- Arizona Cardinals covered 12 of last 17 games as a home dog.

-- Seven of last nine Redskins' games went over the total.

-- UCLA covered eight of last nine against Oregon State.

-- UNLV covered ten of its last twelve home games.

    *******

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) Jerry Jones used to own an Arena Football League team; AFL has a rule where if you’re winning in last minute and you lose yardage on the play, the clock automatically stops, like it was a timeout.

Wouldn’t be stunned if the NFL adopted that rule someday, ending the “victory formation” plays at the end of games now.

    12) Richest guy in LA is a Dr Patrick Soon-Shiang, who is worth an estimated $7B. Dr Shiang bought Magic Johnson’s 4.5% of the Lakers; supposedly, he is interested in buying AEG, which owns the LA Kings, 33% of the Lakers and the Staples Center, amongst other things, and was involved in trying to bring an NFL team to LA. If Dr Shiang buys AEG, chances are the NFL will be back in LA soon.

    11) A pro golfer in California shot 25 for nine holes at a course in Chula Vista, but shot 35 on back nine, three-putting 18th hole in what was a a non-competitive round. Still, shooting a 60 is pretty freakin’ good.

    10) Jordan Baker is a rookie umpire who has worked 16 big league games this season. If you care about such things, 15 of 16 games stayed under the total.

    9) Under Mike Smith, Falcons are 17-8-1 vs spread in games where the spread was 3 or less points, in other words, highly competitive games.

    8) Baltimore Orioles are 28-7 in one-run games this year, and have won an amazing 14 extra-inning games in a row.

    7) If you see the term WAR used as a baseball stat, this is what it refers to, as described by FanGraphs:

Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is an attempt by the sabermetric baseball community to summarize a player’s total contributions to their team in one statistic.

WAR basically looks at a player and asks the question, “If this player got injured and their team had to replace them with a minor leaguer or someone from their bench, how much value would the team be losing?”

This value is expressed in a wins format, so we could say that Player X is worth +6.3 wins to their team while Player Y is only worth +3.5 wins.

    6) Arizona Cardinals have won last nine games that were decided by less than 7 points; they lost six of last seven that were decided by 7+ points.

    5) Tuesday’s Baltimore-Seattle game was odd in several ways; according to Elias Sports Bureau, it was the longest game without an error by either side since a Cub-Astro game in August, 2006. Seattle pitching coach Carl Willis never visited mound until 16th inning. When do you ever see that?

    4) Also, Miguel Olivo walked three times in eight plate appearances Tuesday; coming into the game, he had walked four times in 295 PA’s.

    3) Pittsburgh Steelers are 10-16-1 vs spread as a road favorite under Mike Tomlin.

    2) I want to puke when I hear TV guys having serious discussions about who will win Heisman Trophy, in September. Its like turning a baseball game on April 20 and hearing guys debate who should win the MVP that year. Let the games play themselves out fellas, then start talking about it around Halloween.

    1) Our best wishes/prayers go out to North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams, who underwent surgery Wednesday to have a tumor removed from his kidney. His prognosis for a full recovery is good.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

There’s nowhere to go but up for the Arkansas Razorbacks after a 52-0 drubbing at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide last Saturday.

The Hogs have hit rock bottom after a summer in which head coach Bobby Petrino was fired for his high-speed undercover lovin’ and starting quarterback Tyler Wilson was injured in an overtime loss to UL Monroe in Week 2.

Makeshift coach John L. Smith knows things can only get better for Arkansas at this point, opening his weekly media session with, "Smile! Smile! Or I'm not talking."

It’s been tough for anyone around Razorbacks football to smile this season, especially bettors. The team is 0-2 ATS in its lined games, first losing outright as 30-point chalk then failing to come through when books handed it a cool 20 versus the Tide.

And now that the Hogs are wallowing at their very lowest, oddsmakers throw college football fans a curveball in Week 4. Arkansas is a 7-point home favorite hosting Rutgers Saturday night.

If you subscribe to the SEC vs. Everybody theory, there’s no way the Scarlet Knights, of the laughable Big East, can come into Donald W. Reynolds and push around what still is a solid Razorbacks squad.

Rutgers is 3-0 but has so-so wins over Tulane, FCS Howard and South Florida, going just 1-2 ATS in that span. Oh, and Wilson is expected to return from a concussion in time for Saturday's game.

But if you don’t have the BCS blinders on, you know Rutgers is a very good defensive team that is currently ranked 12th in the land in total yards against and has allowed an average of just 8.3 points to start the year – fifth best in the nation.

It seems early bettors are siding with the former, taking the opening spread from as low as Arkansas -2 to -7 at some online books. Just like the Hogs, this number may have nowhere to go but up.

These are the other football lines making bettor go “hmmm…”

      NCAAF

Temple Owls at Penn State Nittany Lions (-8.5)

Winning cures everything, well almost everything. There’s no washing away what happened at State College with a victory over Navy, but as far as the football program is concerned, there’s a rather large monkey absent from Bill O'Brien’s back.

The Nittany Lions looked a little more like the “Nittany Lions” in Week 3, locking down a dangerous Navy rushing offense for a dominant 34-7 win. Penn State’s offense looked crisp, after mustering just 30 total points in the first two games.

This week, PSU hosts state rival Temple, who nearly stunned its big brother in Philadelphia last year. The Owls, who are coming off the bye, are 8.5-point road dogs after opening at +9.

      NFL

San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings (+7, 43.5)

San Francisco is the Super Bowl favorite after two impressive wins over Green Bay and Detroit. Minnesota, on the other hand, is not. The Vikings needed overtime to edge the Jaguars and lost to the Colts, who didn’t pick up their first win of 2011 until Week 15.

So, what’s with the lenient touchdown spread?

To quote the visionary Jacobim Mugatu from Zoolander, “I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!”

Detroit Lions at Tennessee Titans (+3, 47)

Detroit is lucky to be 1-1 heading into Week 3, but the Lions have more offensive fire power packed in their sweaty socks than the Titans’ entire roster.

Tennessee has had the unpleasantness of opening the season against three of the better quarterbacks in the NFL – Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, and now Matt Stafford – and has been able to counter all those points with just two total touchdowns and a handful of field goals.

Running back Chris Johnson not only threw his offensive line under the bus this week, he got behind the wheel. He put on the funny “Ralph Kramden” hat and said: “People need to step up and do their job…They don’t need to let people beat them. It don’t matter who the opposing defense is, you can’t let your guy beat you.”

This spread is going to be moving faster than the Titans' PR department by game day.

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  STREAKING

Jeremy Guthrie, Kansas City Royals (4-3, 3.13)

Guthrie has turned his season around. He is 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his past eight outings - all Royals' victories. Guthrie was traded after going 3-9 with the Colorado Rockies to Kansas City on July 20 and promptly lost his first three starts. He has not lost since, and is especially tough at home where he owns a 1.22 ERA in his past five outings. Guthrie toes the rubber at Kauffman Stadium against the White Sox next.

Wandy Rodriguez, Pittsburgh Pirates (11-13, 3.65)

Rodriguez collected his third win in a row after recording a quality start against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The 33-year-old Dominican yielded three runs on nine hits in six innings in the 7-6 triumph. Rodriguez fell to 8-9 in his career versus the Brewers, his next opponent, after walking four in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-5 loss on Aug. 24.

                  SLUMPING

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds (17-9, 2.92)

Cueto remained stuck on 17 wins as he was tagged for six runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of a loss at Miami on Saturday. It was the third straight setback for the 26-year-old Dominican, who has surrendered 14 runs and 26 hits in 15 1/3 frames during that span. He looks to get back on track against the Cubs on Thursday.

Esmerling Vasquez, Minnesota Twins (0-2, 7.53)

Vasquez allowed three runs, three hits, walked four and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-0 loss to Chicago on Friday. His previous 141 major league appearances were all in relief with Arizona from 2009-11, when he was 5-10. Vasquez takes the bump against the Indians next.
