LA Dodgers Head To DC To Meet The Nationals

October was destined to be a big month in the nation's capital regardless of what transpired on big league diamonds and pro football gridirons. But with the Washington Nationals heading towards the MLB postseason and Robert Griffin III igniting some hope for the Redskins, perhaps the upcoming election will have to fight for front-page headlines in and around the DC Beltway.

There should be a bit of a postseason ambiance this week in Washington where the Nationals begin a 3-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Los Angeles comes to town fighting for its playoff life while the Nats limp home from a 3-3 road trip that saw them swept in Atlanta this past weekend.

Washington still enjoys a fairly comfortable 5.5-game cushion in the NL East over the Braves, but the three games against the Dodgers are followed by four with a suddenly dangerous Milwaukee Brewers bunch that is gaining steam in pursuit of a postseason slot. The Dodgers, who have to travel to Cincinnati this weekend, are a game behind the Cardinals for the second National League wild card while the Brewers are just 1.5 south of LA.

Tuesday's series opener at Nationals Park finds Jordan Zimmermann on tap for the home team against Aaron Harang for the Dodgers. Washington went out on a -145 price according to the Don Best Pro Odds with an 8-run total that was equally split high/low.

Harang's last four starts have gone into the loss column for the Dodgers, and the big righty failed to make it through the sixth in any of the outings. Control has been one issue for Harang who has a weak 11:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the four LA defeats, but he has strangely been a better hurler on the road this season than at pitcher-friendly Chavez Ravine. His ERA is about a half-run lower away from home where the Dodgers have compiled an 8-7 record in Harang's starts compared to 4-9 in Los Angeles.

The former San Diego State star missed facing the Nats earlier this season but owns a 2.19 ERA in his last four assignments against them while his teams have split the decisions.

Zimmermann has helped the Nationals to wins last two trips to the hill, and owns a 5-2 mark on his personal ledger since the all-star break despite his ERA more than a run higher than in the first half. After a brilliant 4-0 July with a 0.97 ERA, the league seems to be catching up with the right-hander his last eight starts with his ERA at 5.31 in that span.

He is also seeing the Dodgers for the first time this season and for only the second time in his career. His other appearance came in LA more than three years ago when he was roughed up for six runs over six innings, though his offense eventually bailed him out with an 11-9 triumph.

Los Angeles got some bad news over the weekend with ace Clayton Kershaw out indefinitely due to a hip condition. The Dodgers are expecting to get closer Kenley Jansen back for Tuesday's opener, however, after he missed the past three weeks with his recurring heart condition.

Washington is minus a few key players for this series as well, including Stephen Strasburg who was shut down for the season a little more than a week ago. The Nationals are also expected to be without both 2B Danny Espinosa (shoulder) and OF Michael Morse (wrist) for this series.

This cross-country collision doesn't happen too often on the schedule. The clubs have played just 12 games at Nationals Park since it opened in '08, and Washington has the slight 7-5 advantage. They met in LA back at the end of April when the Dodgers swept three from the Nats, two of the contests staying 'under' the total.

Rangers And Angels Continue Series In Anaheim

It's hard not to find a crucial series on the MLB schedule right now. The addition of a second wild card in each league has done its job to keep more teams in the hunt, and created a free-for-all in the American League where eight teams are fighting for five slots with two weeks remaining on the regular season slate.

So it's not an overused cliché to call this week's meeting in Anaheim between the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers a big series. One look at the pitching matchups might lead one to think the playoffs are already here with both clubs trotting their top three starters out for the 3-game set that got underway Tuesday night.

Wednesday's middle game of the set pits a pair of southpaws as Derek Holland is in line for the Rangers against their former teammate CJ Wilson. First pitch from Angel Stadium is 10:05 p.m. (ET) with ESPN providing the telecast and leading into the contest with the A's-Tigers tilt in Detroit.

Early MLB odds for Game 2 listed the Angels as $1.25 favorites with an 8½-run total ('under' -120).

The series began with the Rangers on top of the AL West, 7.5-games in front of the Halos. That margin might normally have had Texas feeling comfortable about its chances to take a third consecutive division flag, but the Oakland Athletics are sitting between the Rangers and Angels just three games out.

Los Angeles held a slight 7-6 lead in this year's series against Texas, taking four of the previous six played in Anaheim. Totals split down the middle in those six games, 3-3.

Wilson will be seeking the fourth consecutive win on his ledger, and first against his old club when he climbs the hill for Wednesday's clash. He has been solid so far this month with a 2.55 ERA in three assignments, and appears to have gotten things back on track with the Angels winning his last five starts following a stretch in which they lost eight of nine with Wilson on the mound.

It's the fifth time he has faced Texas this season, including back-to-back starts in Arlington back in April. Los Angeles halved the previous four, but Wilson failed to decision in the two triumphs, including a dandy performance in Anaheim on June 2 when he blanked the Rangers over six innings. The Rangers beat him around pretty good in Texas the other three outings, leaving Wilson with an overall 7.27 ERA against them this season.

Like Wilson, Holland appears to be getting into a groove recently after a very inconsistent first four months of the campaign that included a DL stint. His ERA has come down more than half a run since early August, and Holland has pitched well enough to be riding a personal 5-game win streak going into Wednesday's battle. But his offense and bullpen failed him the last two times out, both no-decisions for Holland and eventual losses for the Rangers.

Holland has been consistent in his two assignments vs. the Angels this season, though not consistently good. He took the loss in both games, one in Texas and the other in Anaheim, working 6-2/3 innings and surrendering six runs each time along with five homers combined. Holland was 5-1 against LA entering this year with a 4.14 ERA covering nine starts and three relief appearances.

The latest injury news for the Angels had reserve infielder Maicer Izturis questionable while dealing with a rib cage issue. Texas was hoping to have closer Joe Nathan back for the start of the series after he was given time off to rest his arm for the stretch run and playoffs.

Tuesday's series opener was still pending in a mound duel between Ryan Dempster and Jered Weaver. The Angels were listed at -140 behind their lanky ace and the contest carried a 7½-run total. Thursday's finale finds Yu Darvish on the bump for Texas opposite LA's Zack Greinke.

Angels try to gain ground on Texas Wednesday

        TEXAS RANGERS (87-60)

        at LOS ANGELES ANGELS (81-67)

First pitch: Wednesday, 10:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Los Angeles -115, Texas +105, Total: 8

The surging Angels, winners of four of their past five games, including an 11-3 series-opening win on Tuesday, will look to make up more ground in the AL West and Wild Card against the division-leading Rangers Wednesday night.

Two southpaws will duel in this one with Derek Holland pitching for Texas and C.J. Wilson for the Angels. The Rangers enjoy facing left-handed starters with a 25-17 record (.595) against them, averaging 5.6 runs per start on offense. Holland enters this game on a hot streak with a 2.05 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in his past three starts. Overall in 2012 he has a 4.53 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 10-6 record, but he prefers pitching away from Arlington where he has a 3.77 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Holland has not lost a start dating back to July 31. Wilson is also pitching well lately with a 2.55 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 2-0 record in his past three starts. Overall in 2012 he has a 3.73 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, working his way to a 12-9 record. Both of these pitchers sport miserable career numbers against Texas and Los Angeles respectively. With such an even pitching matchup, this game comes down to offense. The Rangers have the definite advantage with 5.1 runs per game, considerably higher the L.A.’s 4.8 runs per game overall and 4.4 runs per game in its home ballpark. The pick here is slight underdog TEXAS to prevail.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Rangers:

Play On - Road teams when the money line is +125 to -125 (TEXAS) - average offensive team (4.7 to 5.2 runs/game) against a good starter (ERA<=4.20) (AL), with an on base percentage of .300 or worse over their last 10 games. (51-25 since 1997.) (67.1%, +28.3 units. Rating = 3*).

The Rangers will be short-handed in this game without star OF Josh Hamilton, who has a sinus infection. Texas is 5-2 in Holland’s past seven starts, but Holland is 0-2 in two 2012 starts against the Angels this year. He surrendered six earned runs in 6.2 innings in both of those outings, while yielding a total of 14 hits and five home runs. Overall, he has a 5.40 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in his career against Los Angeles, with a 4-5 record (team is 4-7) in 11 career starts. Although Holland has been working deep into games lately with 7.3 innings per start his past three times out and 6.5 overall in 2012, he must be comforted to know that the Texas bullpen, with its 3.44 ERA and 83% save conversion rate is supporting him.

As bad as Holland is against the Angels, Wilson is worse against the Rangers. In four career starts he is 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA and 1.90 WHIP. All four of those starts have come in 2012, and did not pitch more than six innings in any of those outings. However, like Holland, Wilson is supported by a strong bullpen that has a 2.56 home ERA and 1.18 home WHIP. The left-hander has also been helped out by a great offense in his past five starts (all L.A. wins), as his team has scored 47 runs (9.4 per game) over this span. The Angels are 5-2 against the Rangers at home this season and 8-6 overall, but look to be outgunned in this one. Play against the favorites.

          Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Albert Pujols wasn't with the pennant contending Angels Tuesday due to his wife giving birth to the couple's fifth child. He is on a contract that pays him $240M for ten years.

-- Detroit lost its last nine one-run road games.

-- WGN's Bob Brenly was saying that in 15 baseball games Sunday, total of 157 pitchers were used, and four teams used only two.

-- Jose Reyes made the 500,000th error in major league history over the weekend; remember when I was a kid and the millionth run in baseball's history was scored by Bob Watson of the Astros.

-- Alabama is now a 3-point favorite over LSU for the game being played November 3rd, if you care about futures wagering.

-- Sad news for football fans today; NFL Films President Steve Sabol died at age 69. If you like pro football, Sabol helped you enjoy it a lot more.

          **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Ranking major league ballclubs.....

          30) Astros—Coming fairly close to being an expansion franchise, totally starting over, from ground up. That’s not all bad, just requires patience.

          29) Twins-- UConn’s new hoop coach is Kevin Ollie; he has a clause in his one-year contract that rewards him if Huskies win Big East tournament. One small problem; UConn can’t play in this year’s tournament.

          28) Indians—Speaking of UConn, they’re starting the season playing Michigan State on a military base in Germany. Why?

          27) Cubs—Its worth the price of the Extra Innings package just to watch games from Wrigley Field. Seriously.

          26) Rockies—If de la Rosa comes back healthy next year, their pitching rotation won’t be that bad, but organizational depth is incredibly thin.

          8) Giants—Will win division because they still have outstanding starting pitching and because Dodgers have had an incredible string of injuries the last few weeks.

          7) Orioles—27-7 in one-run games; will be curious next spring to see where pundits predict them to finish.

          6) A’s—10-game gauntlet thru Detroit-Bronx-Arlington could define their season. Seems like long time ago that they brought Manny Ramirez in to be their DH this year. Luckily, he never made it to Oakland.

          5) Bronx—Pitching remains suspect, especially if Sabathia’s elbow remains balky.

          4) Braves—Quietly bounced back from last September’s debacle to make the playoffs with a veteran crew.

          3) Reds—Who drew the short straw and has to tell the honchos at FOX that the Red Sox didn’t make the playoffs this year? "No sir, thats the Reds, from Cincinnati, not the Red Sox."

          2) Nationals—Davey Johnson has a date in Cooperstown ahead of him. I recommend Sal’s Pizza. Very good.

          1) Rangers—Josh Hamilton was very likeable on Jimmy Kimmel’s show Monday. He’ll stay likeable as long as he doesn’t go to the Bronx as a free agent. With his history, he has to be careful where he signs-- staying with the Rangers wouldn't be a bad option for him.
