College football odds: Week 4 opening line report

After thumping Michigan State, 20-3, Saturday night, perhaps Notre Dame wants to cancel that move to the ACC and call the Big Ten its new football home.

The Fighting Irish face another Big Ten opponent in Week 4, pegged as early 6-point favorites hosting the Michigan Wolverines in South Bend Saturday.

Peter Korner, founder of Nevada-based odds consultants The Sports Club, says he first approached the table with Notre Dame -7 but was talked down by his fellow oddsmakers. They sent out Notre Dame -4, knowing that the public appeal of the Irish would likely inflate that opening spread a bit.

“The public team theory is obviously huge with Notre Dame. They have a huge following and a ton of money,” Korner told Covers. “That following has been waiting for a while for Notre Dame to make a statement and have a quality team. The wins they have and the way they’re playing is impressive.”

Korner says it will be interesting to see where this line goes in the first few days, expecting sharps to bet the Fighting Irish and wait on the public flood of action to drive up the spread before buying back Michigan closer to game time. The Wolverines are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with Notre Dame, including last year's thriller under the lights in the Big House.

“Michigan is a quality team too and, while it’s tough to gauge these lines a week in advance, the wiseguys will wait and take Michigan plus as many points as they can get,” Korner speculates.

Here’s a look at the opening lines for some of the other marquee games on the Week 4 board:

Clemson Tigers at Florida State Seminoles (-12)

The Noles are near two-touchdown faves in this battle of ACC powers, which should indicate just how much better FSU is than the rest of the conference. The Sports Club sent out Seminoles -13, so books didn't move too far from that, respecting Clemson’s ability to put points on the board. The Tigers are 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings with FSU. Early money has bumped this up to Seminoles -13.

Kansas State Wildcats at Oklahoma Sooners (-15)

The Sooners come into this Big 12 battle tagged as lofty faves versus a KSU squad that had a tough time with North Texas last week. The Sports Club suggested an even higher spread, sending out OU -17. Oklahoma didn’t look like national title contenders in its first two showings, but has had two weeks to prepare for KSU and is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games off the bye. Early money on the Wildcats has moved this spread down to two touchdowns.

Arizona Wildcats at Oregon Ducks (-26.5)

The Ducks are hefty chalk in this Pac-12 clash, despite Arizona winning over many bettors in the first three weeks. The Wildcats are 3-0 (2-1 ATS) behind new head coach Rich Rodriguez while the Ducks are also 3-0 but have failed to cover the spread in each of those contests. The Sports Club sent out a suggested spread of 26 for this game and books stuck on the half-point hook. However, the spread is down to -24 as of Sunday night.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kent State at Buffalo: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kent State Golden Flashes at Buffalo Bulls (-3.5, 52)

No matter what Kent State does this season, the team will likely be remembered best for the run-back of 60 yards by Andre Parker on a fumbled punt return. The wrong way. That blunder earned the Golden Flashes some major air time and social media mentions after Week 1. They'll get a chance to be back in the spotlight in a much more desirable way when they take on Buffalo in a nationally televised contest Wednesday.

              TV: ESPNU

LINE: Buffalo -3.5, O/U 52. Oddsmakers opened Buffalo as a field-goal favorite but the number has been bet up a half-point.

WEATHER: Temperatures are expected to be 50 degrees in the evening with winds of 11 mph. Showers in the morning, expected to clear.

ABOUT KENT STATE: The Flashes have only won one of their last eight road games going back to 2010. Kent State got bowled over at Kentucky, 47-14, on Sept. 8 when the Wildcats used a no-huddle offense that the Flashes couldn't adjust to. Coach Darrell Hazell spent time over the 10-day layoff working on defending the no-huddle. KSU QB Spencer Keith hasn't thrown an interception in seven games, but Keith isn’t winning games for KSU either. He had to earn the starting job this year despite being a three-year starter previously. Kent State will be without one of its top defensive players, cornerback Norman Wolfe, who is out with a broken arm.

ABOUT BUFFALO: Buffalo's offensive line returns four starters from last year, which should be the backbone of this offense. The unit showed its experience last game when the Bulls racked up over 300 yards of offense and scored a school record 56 points as an FBS team, albeit in a win over FCS Morgan State. Buffalo is capable of scoring quickly with dual-threat QB Alex Zordich and tailback Branden (Bo) Oliver. Oliver comes into this game ranking second in the country with 349 yards rushing. Defense is a different story, where the Bulls rank 110th in scoring defense and 117th defending the pass.

              TRENDS:

-- Golden Flashes are 0-6 ATS in their last six games in September.
-- Underdog is 4-0-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
-- Bulls are 0-5 ATS in their last five games as a home favorite of 0.5-3.0.

              EXTRA POINTS:

              1. Kent State has outscored its opposition 24-0 in the first quarter through two games.

              2. Kent State ranks third in the nation in two categories: kickoff returns (39.41 yard avg.) and turnover margin (+2.5).

              3. Oliver and wide receiver Alex Neutz have accounted for 8 of Buffalo's 10 touchdowns so far.

                Armadillo's Write-Up

                Week 4

                Wednesday's game
Buffalo-Kent State are playing for first time since '09; dogs are 5-1-1 vs spread in last seven series games, with one pick 'em in there and dogs 3-1 SU in last four. Last two meetings were both decided by a FG. Buffalo has 7 starters back on offense, 8 on defense; 5-10 as home favorite sincs 2008, but 3-3 since Quinn became HC. Bulls ran ball for 199 yards in a 45-23 (+37) loss to Georgia, which ain't all that bad. Kent has 8 starters back on both sides of ball, with senior QB who ha 33 career starts, and four starters back on OL, but they got crushed 47-14 at Kentucky, even though they gained 409 TY- they're 2-8 in last 10 tries as a road dog.

                  Thursday, September 20

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: BYU at Boise State
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BYU at Boise State (-7.5, 52)

Beating Boise State on the blue turf in September is about as rare as a blue steak. The last time anyone did it was 2001 - a string of 18 games and nearly three presidential terms. The Broncos are expecting a record crowd in a newly remodeled stadium in what will be the second road game in a row for BYU in a tough environment after the Cougars visited Utah last week.

                  TV: ESPN, 9 p.m. ET

                  LINE: Boise State -7.5, O/U 49.

WEATHER: The offenses won't have any excuses Thursday. It's expected to be a clear night in the mid-50's in Boise with little wind.

ABOUT BYU: The Cougars insist they've moved on from a heartbreaking 24-21 loss last week against rival Utah that ended with some strange time-on-the-clock issues and the shifty - BYU fans would say dodgy - play of Utah's defensive line. BYU will lean on its stingy defense Thursday. Their defense ranks ninth in the country in yards against (241 per game) and 20th in points allowed (14.3 per game). The over/under is 1-1 through three games with BYU (one game had no line) but the 'over' toppled the total by just a half point against Utah. QB Riley Nelson has shown signs of suffering from a back injury and is coming off a 17-of-35 passing performance.

ABOUT BOISE STATE: This is arguably Boise State's toughest remaining game on the schedule. If you ask their supporters, a win here sets them up in decent shape for an 11-1 season, which could give them a legit shot at a BCS bowl game. To do that, they'll likely need to be a little better in the red zone where they're just 66.7 percent so far - uncharacteristic for a typically high-octane Broncos team. Boise State is 1-1 but has covered both spreads so far. Both their games have also played under thanks to a defense that's allowed only 29 points. Dangerous tailback D.J. Harper faces a BYU rush defense that ranks sixth in the country.

                  TRENDS:
Cougars are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog.
Broncos are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0.
Boise State coach Chris Peterson is 19-1 straight up in September.

                  EXTRA POINTS:

                  1. Broncos defensive end Sam Ukwuachu said this week if there's one thing Boise State can do it's rush the QB. That will be a key to this game against BYU's Nelson, who has struggled under pressure this season.

                  2. The Broncos are tied for fifth in the nation with three penalties per game.

                  3. BYU QB Riley Nelson started at Boise State as a freshman for Utah State. He was yanked after rushing for 45 yards and passing for 40. The Aggies lost 49-10, but salvaged a 'push' as 39-point dogs.

                    Armadillo's Write-Up

                    Week 4

                    Thursday's game

BYU-Boise State both on short work weeks, but Cougars played rivalry game with Utah very late Saturday, losing when last-second FG hit left upright and bounced away. Boise had an easy win over Miami, Ohio, so they should have advantage here. Broncos have very young team, with 15 new starters, including a new QB; they were 0-6 vs spread as favorite at home LY, after being 33-19 from 2002-10. BYU has 7 starters back on both sides of ball and senior QB with 20 career starts; they're 4-2 as road underdogs last 3+ years. Teams haven't met since 2004; Boise basically took BYU's place in Mountain West, on their way out door to Big East.

                      Kentucky at (14) Florida (-24, 52)

Florida is in the midst of a 25-game winning streak against the Wildcats, the longest active streak in the nation for a team against a conference opponent.
Kentucky is 0-5 ATS in its last five meetings with Florida.

Texas El Paso at (24) Wisconsin (-18, 48)

Wisconsin puts its 18-game home winning streak on the line, which is currently the second-longest active home win streak in the nation behind LSU (20). The Miners are 0-16 all-time in road games versus BCS conference teams, but keep in mind the Badgers are 0-5 ATS in their last five contests overall.

                      Maryland at (7) West Virginia (-27, 62)

The seventh-ranked Mountaineers have put up 111 points in their first two games of 2012. Senior quarterback Geno Smith has completed 88 percent of his passes in victories over Marshall and James Madison, throwing for 734 yards. The Terrapins are 0-5 ATS in their last five meetings.

                      Virginia at (16) TCU (-17, 53)

No. 16 TCU puts its nation-longest 10-game winning streak on the line Saturday against Virginia. The Horned Frogs were dealt a blow when leading rusher Waymon James was ruled out for the season Wednesday due to a left knee injury. He had 168 rushing yards on 9.9 per carry.

Eastern Michigan at (20) Michigan State (-33, 47)

The Eagles have been outscored 122-56 in their three games and have dropped five in a row dating back to last season. They’re 0-8 against Michigan State, with seven of the meetings coming in East Lansing. The Spartans have won the last five matchups - all at home - by a combined score of 248-44.

                      Oregon State at (19) UCLA (-7.5, 52)

After racking up 85 points and 1,299 yards of offense in its first two games, No. 19 UCLA showed off its cunning defense by forcing six turnovers in a 37-6 rout of Houston last week. The Bruins are just one of two FBS teams (Oklahoma State is the other) averaging 300 yards rushing and 300 yards passing. The Beavers are 1-8 ATS in their last nine meetings.

Idaho State at (22) Nebraska- odds N/A

The Cornhuskers’ rushing attack is putting up 295 yards per game and will receive an additional boost when tailback Rex Burkhead returns from injury this week. Ameer Abdullah has been a monster on the ground in Burkhead’s absence, averaging 122.3 yards per game and six yards per carry. The over is 4-0 in the Bengals’ last four non-conference games.

                      Missouri at (8) South Carolina (-10, 49)

Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier has named Connor Shaw his starting QB Saturday despite his banged up throwing shoulder. The Tigers also have issues under center. James Franklin sat out Missouri’s 24-20 victory over Arizona State last week with a shoulder ailment, but is “90 percent sure” he’ll play in the club’s first ever SEC road game. South Carolina is 4-0 ATS in its last four games as a home favorite.

                      Florida Atlantic at (1) Alabama (-49, 57)

The Tide has posted back-to-back shutout wins over Western Kentucky (35-0) and Arkansas (52-0), marking the first time they've accomplished the feat since 1980. Alabama has outscored its opponents by an incredible 167-14 margin in its last 17 quarters dating back to last season.

                      California at (12) Southern California (-16.5, 58.5)

USC was stunned by Stanford last week, failing to score over the final 40-plus minutes. Cal has scored 10 or fewer points five times and hasn’t scored more than 17 during its current eight-game losing streak to the Trojans. USC was favored in all eight of those games and went 6-2 ATS while the under went 7-1.

                      (18) Louisville at Florida International (13.5, 57.5)

Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater has completed 81.8 percent of his pass attempts this season and now faces a Golden Panthers' defense that has surrendered 39 points per game and more than 291 passing yards per contest. Florida International is 4-0 ATS in its last four games as a home underdog of 10.5 or greater.

                      (2) LSU at Auburn (20.5, 49)

The Tigers have posted routs in all three of their games so far over North Texas (41-14), Washington (41-3) and most recently, Idaho (63-14). They are 2-1 ATS in those games. LSU is 6-0 ATS in its last six games as a road favorite. Auburn is 0-3 against the spread and needed overtime to earn its first win of the season against Louisiana-Munroe last week.

South Alabama at (23) Mississippi State (-34, 49.5)

The 23rd-ranked Bulldogs seek their first 4-0 start since 1999 on Saturday. The Jaguars have been held below 10 points in their last two games and the under is 4-0 in Mississippi State’s last four September contests.

                      (17) Michigan at (15) Notre Dame (-4.5, 50.5)

The Wolverines have broken the hearts of the Irish with four-point victories in each of the last three seasons and Michigan QB Denard Robinson has accounted for 948 yards of offense in his two starts against Notre Dame. The Irish will be without safety Jamoris Slaughter, who recently tore his left Achilles tendon. The underdog is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.

                      Vanderbilt at (6) Georgia (-16.5, 54)

The Bulldogs amassed a school-record 713 yards of total offense in a rout of overmatched Florida Atlantic last week to help increase their scoring total to 47.3 points per game this season. Vanderbilt ranks 16th in the nation in scoring defense (13.3 points) and is 5-0 ATS in its last five games as a dog.

                      (13) Kansas State at (5) Oklahoma (-14, 58.5)

The Sooners are 13-0 in Big 12 openers under Bob Stoops, outscoring the opposition by an average of 22.6 points in the process. Oklahoma owns a commanding 71-17-4 lead in the all-time series with Kansas State and the Sooners are 8-1 against the Wildcats during Stoops' tenure. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.

                      (9) Clemson at (4) Florida State (-14.5, 57)

Florida State is 3-0, outscoring its three opponents 176-3. Defensive end Bjoern Werner has seven sacks and is anchoring a defense that has allowed less than two yards per play. The home team has taken each of the last five and nine of the last 10 in the series.

                      (21) Arizona at (3) Oregon (-23, 77.5)

The Ducks are coming off a season-high 63-point effort over Tennessee Tech. Arizona also has a potent offense, averaging a hefty 604.7 yards of total offense per game. Oregon is 0-6-2 ATS in its last eight games as a home favorite of 10.5 or greater.

                        Armadillo's Write-Up

                        Week 4

                        Friday's game

Sun Belt underdogs are stunning 11-3 vs spread as non-conference dog in 2012; this is rare chance for UL-Monroe to host a BCS team, much less play them on national TV. ULM has never had a winning season at I-A level, but in last two weeks, they split pair of OT decisions at Arkansas/ Auburn, games that had total yardage of 557-376 ULM, then 418-410 Auburn, so Warhawks more than held their own both games. Baylor is on road for first time this year; they won first two home games, allowing 918 yards to Sam Houston State/SMU, so they're still trying to outscore people. Big X favorites are 7-5 vs spread, 2-2 on road. Baylor has a new QB, but he's a senior with 9 starts. ULM's QB is making his 27th career start; Warhawks are 8-14-1 as home underdog, Baylor 5-2 as road fave.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Baylor at UL Monroe
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Baylor at Louisiana-Monroe (7, 69.5)

Arkansas and to a lesser degree Auburn both found out that Louisiana-Monroe is a bottom-tier FBS team only when it comes to its bottom line, and the Warhawks’ most anticipated home opener in years will help in that category. Kolton Browning and Louisiana-Monroe will host their first Big 12 opponent Friday as Baylor puts its eight-game winning streak on the line at Malone Stadium. The Warhawks, the biggest surprise of the season thus far, rallied from a three-touchdown deficit to beat then-No. 8 Arkansas 34-31 in overtime Sept. 8, and took Auburn to overtime before losing 31-28 last week. The Bears, in transition after losing Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III to the NFL, should be wary after struggling with FCS foe Sam Houston State for a half Saturday.

                          TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN.

                          LINE: Baylor -7, O/U 69.5

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the high 70s with clear skies at James L. Monroe Stadium. Winds will be light out of the south.

ABOUT BAYLOR (2-0): After a week off, the Bears looked flat and trailed 20-10 at the half against Sam Houston State before awakening from their daze. Griffin III’s replacement, senior Nick Florence, passed for 312 yards and three touchdowns, helping Baylor outscore the Bearkats 38-3 in the second half en route to a 48-23 victory. Florence also ran for 80 yards - including a key 60-yard scamper that set up Glasco Martin’s go-ahead score. Florence has completed 63.4 percent (45-of-71) of his attempts for 653 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He has been connecting with senior Terrance Williams (13 catches, 269 yards, two touchdowns) often. Meanwhile, the defense, which ranked 116th (out of 120 FBS teams), forced four turnovers last week.

ABOUT LOUISIANA-MONROE (1-1): The Warhawks haven’t had a winning season since joining the FBS in 1994, but early indications suggest this could be the year. Browning’s game-winning touchdown run against Arkansas vaulted them into the national consciousness and last week’s effort against Auburn proved it wasn’t a fluke. Browning (649 yards, six touchdowns, one interception) passed for 237 yards and three touchdowns, two of which game in the final seven minutes, but Louisiana-Monroe had a field goal blocked in overtime. Louisiana-Monroe’s defense needs a better effort after giving up 255 rushing yards to Auburn.

                          TRENDS:
*Bears are 0-5 ATS in their last five road games.
*Warhawks are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.
*Over is 4-0 in Bears’ last four non-conference games.
*Over is 4-0 in Warhawks’ last four non-conference games.

                          EXTRA POINTS

                          1. “We went sent a message out that last week wasn't a fluke taking our second SEC opponent in a row to overtime," Warhawks’ redshirt freshman tight end Harley Scioneaux on the loss to Auburn.

                          2. Baylor’s eight-game winning streak is the second longest in the nation behind TCU (10).

                          3. Louisiana-Monroe sold an additional 16,000 tickets for its home opener after beating Arkansas.

                            Armadillo's Write-Up

                            Week 4

                            Saturday's games
                            Top games

Home side won last five Clemson-Florida State games, with favorites covering three of last four; Tigers lost five of last six visits to Florida State, with five of six losses by 14+ points (lost 16-13/41-27 last two times here). Clemson is 5-2 as road dog under Swinney; they ran ball for 320 yards in 26-19 win over Auburn, only good team they’ve played this year, which is one more than Florida State has played. Seminoles are 13-8 as favorite under Fisher, 8-6 at home; they crushed first three cupcakes they played by combined score of 176-3, but two were I-AA teams, and FSU had revenge motive against Wake (had lost four of previous six to Deacons).

Georgia won 14 of last 15 games with Vanderbilt, winning last five (2-3 vs spread), with only two of five by more than 10 points. Improved Vandy lost six of last seven visits here but went 4-3 vs spread in those games; they outrushed Georgia 199-117 in LY’s 33-28 (+11) home loss, but used different QB in last week’s I-AA walkover, benching returning starter Rodgers (Aaron’s brother), after he completed 30-56 passes in opening losses to South Carolina/Northwestern. Vandy is 2-6 as road underdog last 2+ years. Dawgs are 8-5 in last 13 games as home favorite, 0-2 this year (won 45-23/56-20 over stiffs)- they play Tennessee/South Carolina next two weeks, better not look ahead.

First road game for RichRod’s Arizona squad that hammered Oklahoma State 59-38 at home two weeks ago; Wildcats lost last four games with Oregon by average score of 51-36, so total of 77 seems reachable. Underdogs are 4-2-1 vs spread in last seven series games, but 1-3-1 in last five played here. Oregon has run ball for average of 329 yards/game in first three wins. Arizona was 4-6-2 as road dog last four years under Stoops; Ducks are 11-8-1 as home favorites under Kelly, 0-2 this year (won 57-34/42-25 over lesser foes, taking foot off gas in second half). Scary thing about Oregon is they start a redshirt freshman QB and three sophs on offensive line.

UCLA is vastly improved under former NFL coach Mora, averaging 622 yards, 41 ppg in 3-0 start, including 36-30 upset of Nebraska; Bruins won seven of last nine games with Oregon State, but weird thing is, this is first time in last four meetings here they’ve been favored over State (dogs covered nine of last 12 series games, four of six here). Beavers are usually slow starters, but they upset Wisconsin 10-7 at home two weeks ago, in their only game so far this year (opener was ppd, had bye last week). Since 2004, Bruins are 19-10 vs spread as home favorites; since ’06, Oregon State is 15-9 as road underdog. OSU had soph QB with 12 career starts; entire OL is juniors/seniors.

USC’s national title hopes took huge hit last week with loss at Stanford, when they ran ball for only 29 yards (had only 81 rushing yards vs Hawai’i). Trojans won last eight games with Cal, covering six of last seven; they won last three played here by average score of 29-9. Cal lost winnable 35-28 game at Ohio State last week, victimized by a lousy kicker; they’ve allowed 31+ points in all three games, including 50-31 win over I-AA Southern Utah. Bears are 5-3 vs spread in last nine games as road dog- they’ve got senior QB with 27 career starts (most at Buffalo of MAC) and OL that starts three seniors, two freshmen. Since 2003, USC is 11-6 vs spread in game following a loss.

Auburn won national title with Cam Newton two years ago; since then, they’re 9-7, 1-2 this year, with only win in OT over UL-Monroe in game where total yardage was 418-410. If ULM runs ball for 165 yards vs Auburn (Clemson had 320), what will Bayou Bengals do? Over last decade, War Eagles are 7-3 as home underdog, 4-1 under Chizik, but they’ve completed just 34-67 passes this year with soph Frazier under center. They’ll need better balance to come close to pulling upset. First road game for LSU QB Mettenberger, who will rely on OL with four returning starters; Tigers ran ball for average for 268 yards/game in first three wins. Miles covered his last five tries as a road favorite. Six of last eight series games were decided by 7 or less points.

Georgia Tech relentlessly runs its option offense, so if you can’t stop the run, you’re dead; Miami allowed 32-52 points in two away games vs I-A opponents this year, giving up 542-518 TY, allowing 308 rushing yards at K-State, then 222 vs I-AA Bethune-Cookman last week. Hurricanes are 4-2 as road underdogs under Golden; they’ve pounded Tech last three years, 33-17/35-10/33-17, but were favored in all three games, in series where favored covered seven of last nine meetings. Tech is 10-8-1 as home favorite under Johnson; they’ve got senior QB with 20 career starts- their OL starts four juniors and a senior. Conference favorites are 8-7 vs spread this young season.

Mizzou-South Carolina last met in lower-level bowl seven years ago. Missouri is in Columbia, South Carolina is too, just two different Columbias. Both teams have QB injury issues; Gamecocks’ Shaw has bum shoulder—his replacement Thompson looked more than competent in big win last week. Mizzou QB Franklin declined painkilling shot last week, so he didn’t play; not sure if/how that affects team morale/chemistry. RS freshman Berkstresser beat Arizona State 24-20 in his first start, but completed just 21-41 passes, and isn’t nearly as mobile as Franklin. Since 2003, Mizzou is 10-7 vs spread as road underdog. Gamecocks covered seven of last ten as a home favorite.

Over last 14 years, Notre Dame has been favored to beat Michigan four times; they lost all four SU (all were in last six years). Underdog is whopping 14-2 in last 16 series games, with Michigan winning last three meetings, all by exactly 4 points, despite allowing average of 512.7 TY in those games. Wolverines are just 4-8 as road underdogs since Lloyd Carr retired; they’ve got mobile senior QB making 31st career start and three starters back on OL. Irish off to solid 3-0 start but scored only 20 points in beating Purdue/Mich State last two weeks. ND completed only 14-32 passes last week. Kelly has option to go to better passer Rees, if things get dicey. Since 2004, Irish are 12-24-1 as home favorites.

Minnesota’s mobile senior QB Gray (used to be WR), is out hurt (ankle), so soph Shortell (2 starts LY) is playing and doing OK (15-23 with four TDs); Gophers are 3-0, winning at UNLV in OT and beating Western Michigan by 5, hardly stellar feats, but wins nonetheless. Minnesota is just 6-11 as home favorites since Glen Mason left town after ’06 season, but Coach Kill has won at lower levels (So. Illinois/No. Illinois) and is making progress here. Syracuse allowed 42 points each in losses to Northwestern/USC, then struggled to beat I-AA Stony Brook 28-17 last week. Orange has senior QB who has improved a lot- they’re 5-7 as road dog under Marrone. Big East non-conference underdogs are 4-0-1 vs spread this year.

Over last five years, Kansas State is 13-3 vs spread as road underdog, covering last six such games; mobile senior QB Klein (started 2 games at WR couple years ago) has completed 73% of passes this, 25-32 vs Miami/North Texas, their I-A foes, but K-State has been hammered by Oklahoma of late, losing last five meetings by average of 22 points (56-17 LY). Hard to tell much about Oklahoma yet this year; they struggled at UTEP in opener (was 7-7 at half) before they won 24-7, then beat I-AA opponent after that, before last week’s bye. Sooners have terrific senior QB Jones (39 career starts); since 2006, they’re 23-11-1 vs spread as a home favorite. Was OU holding back before their conference opener?

Utah split pair of in-state rivalry games last two weeks, edging BYU in wild finish last week, after rare loss to Utah State the week before; over last decade, Utes are 13-8 vs spread as road underdogs (9-8 under Willingham). Utah lost its #1 QB (shoulder/quit football) so they’re using stopgap guy while trying to work more mobile sub in to play in running situations. Utah is 11-16 vs spread in last 27 games that followed a win. Arizona State (-3) went to Utah and waxed Utes 35-14 LY, thanks to + 5 turnover ratio. Young ASU lost 7 starters on both side of ball; they’re playing two QBs and coming off first loss (24-20 @ Missouri team playing without its #1 QB). Since ’07, Sun Devils are 15-11 as a home favorite.

Sun Belt teams are an impressive 13-5 vs spread in non-conference games this year, 2-2 as favorites, 0-2 at home; Western Kentucky upset in-state rival Kentucky last week, as Coach Taggart gradually upgrades his program- they were outgained 328-224 at Alabama the week before, not so bad- they’ve got senior QB making 34th career start and four returning starters on OL. WKU is 1-4 vs spread as a home favorite since moving to I-A. Southern Mississippi is 0-2 with 12 new starters and new coach; they outgained East Carolina by 96 yards last week, but -3 turnover ratio doomed them. C-USA teams are 9-15 vs spread out of conference this year, 4-7 as road underdogs.
