    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Matt Barkley went 0-4 vs Stanford; Peyton Manning went 0-4 against Florida. His career turned out pretty well.

-- 11,722 loyalists saw the Rays lose to Aaron Cook at the Trop Monday night; the Tampa Bay bandwagon has officially disbanded.

-- Bill Belichick is 53-34 vs spread in his career in game after a loss.

-- American high school kids rank 32nd in the world in Math skills. Bet you we're near the top in video games, though!!!!

-- Eureka College QB Sam Durley threw for 736 yards and five TDs in his first game this year, but has struggled the last two games, throwing for a total of 467 yards and two TDs in splitting those two games. Could be ol' Knox College doesn't have a very good defense.

-- As far as Presidential TV commercials go, I want to hear from the two candidates. No one else. Not Bill Clinton, not Clint Eastwood. Just the two candidates we're choosing between. Its not a lot to ask.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing an early season ranking of NFL teams

    32) Chiefs—0-2 for sixth time in last seven years, losing by 16-18 points. Can’t blame Todd Haley this year.

    31) Jaguars—Have run 113 plays, only four of which went for 20+ yards, tying them with Arizona for least explosive plays in NFL. Big difference is that Cardinals have two wins, Jags have none.

    30) Titans—Replacement refs seem to prefer calling defensive holding over pass interference, even though most of the holds are occurring while the ball is in the air. Makes markoff more like the college PI rule (15 yards).

??) Vikings—They’ve trailed Jags/Colts late, a bad sign, but they’ve rallied late to tie both games, a good sign. Is it me, or is there an influx or really good rookie kickers this year?

??) Saints— At each of his coaching stops, its taken Coach Spagnuolo a few games to get his defense to work properly. He needs a strong game against the 0-2 Chiefs this week.

Let me say that its stupid to rank teams after two games, but I’ve rarely been accused of being smart. This is one man’s opinion, for better or worse.

    8) Broncos—Five of first seven Denver games are in primetime, as if we don’t see enough of #18 during the commercials.

    7) Cardinals—There is a knockout pool in Las Vegas, $300 a pop, with over 200 people in it. First prize is around $63,000. Almost half the entrants had New England Sunday.

    6) Chargers—In 15 years as a head coach, Norv Turner is 2-0 for the first time. Seems like a good guy, so good for him. Love the white jersey/white pant combo, by the way.

    5) Eagles—Are 2-0 for first time since ’04; have gained 942 yards, turned ball over nine teams, won both games in last 2:00. Michael Vick is fun to watch, unless you lay the points with Philly.

    4) Ravens—Have them ranked ahead of Philly because Eagles struggled to beat an awful Browns team.

    3) Falcons—Some knowledge to sock away for later this season: Falcons' coach Mike Smith is 17-3-1 vs spread in game following a loss.

T1) 49ers—NFC won six of its first seven games against AFC this year.

T1) Texans—They’ve played Dolphins/Jaguars, so hard to gauge. Play Broncos in Denver Sunday with Broncos on short week in Kubiak’s homecoming, we’ll know more then.

NFL odds: Week 3 opening line report

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is seething over what he deems a “cheap shot” at the end of his team’s 41-34 come-from-behind win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday.

Coughlin should be more concerned about his team’s bumpy start to the season rather than the ethics of late-game football. New York is barely 1-1 and has failed to cover in each outings – both times as the betting favorite.

The Giants are once again the betting chalk in Week 3, sitting as 1.5-point road favorites in Carolina Thursday night.

Some oddsmakers, like Peter Korner, founder of Nevada-based line consultants The Sports Club, actually went to the table with the Panthers as slight home favorites. But, with this game stepping into the Thursday night spotlight, both oddsmakers and books know there will be no shortage of New York money and played it safe.

“That was an impressive comeback win Sunday and that is what is going to be on bettors’ minds,” Korner told Covers. “Yeah, (the Giants) do have some injuries and yeah they haven't been playing well. but there is just too much Giants money out there to think Carolina should be favored.”

“I think it will stay around 1 or 2 and that’s where it will close.”

Here’s a glance at some of the opening spreads for some of Week 3’s biggest games:

Kansas City Chiefs at New Orleans Saints (-9, 54.5)

The Saints have been fade bait since the Bounty Gate scandal broke in the offseason. New Orleans is 0-2 after embarrassing losses to Washington and Carolina, but books are confident it will right in the ship in Week 3.

“They’re definitely under-performing, but if there is a team that is going to break out this week, it’s the Saints,” says Korner. “This is a game between two 0-2 teams, but it is more of a must-win for the Saints.”

The Sports Club sent out a suggested line of New Orleans -11.5 but most books opened low, with the Saints as 9-point favorites. Korner says if he were a book, he’d much rather be cheering for New Orleans to win than a Chiefs team that looks to be in total disarray.

Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona Cardinals (+4, 44)

Only five teams are undefeated heading into the Monday nighter, and this is a battle between two of them. Arizona, surprisingly is among those 2-0 starts and is coming off a huge road win over the New England Patriots in Week 2.

“I actually came with Arizona as the favorite,” says Korner. “As a handicapper, this game would have to raise eyebrows. Philadelphia, even though they’re 2-0, haven’t looked good. Arizona, well, you can’t look any better than coming off a win over the Patriots.”

“I think this should be closer to a pick. You don’t want to go much higher than Eagles -4,” he adds. “All the sharp money is going to be on the home underdog.”

New England Patriots at Baltimore Ravens (-3, 48.5)

This rematch of the AFC Championship Game has the hard number of Ravens -3 and books should see two-way action on this game. Korner says the injury to Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez won’t have an impact on the spread because Tom Brady has so many other weapons in the passing game.

“I don’t think there is going to be a big rush of New England money,” he says. “We’ll get to see the guts of the Patriots, coming off that loss to Arizona.”

College football odds: Week 4 opening line report

After thumping Michigan State, 20-3, Saturday night, perhaps Notre Dame wants to cancel that move to the ACC and call the Big Ten its new football home.

The Fighting Irish face another Big Ten opponent in Week 4, pegged as early 6-point favorites hosting the Michigan Wolverines in South Bend Saturday.

Peter Korner, founder of Nevada-based odds consultants The Sports Club, says he first approached the table with Notre Dame -7 but was talked down by his fellow oddsmakers. They sent out Notre Dame -4, knowing that the public appeal of the Irish would likely inflate that opening spread a bit.

“The public team theory is obviously huge with Notre Dame. They have a huge following and a ton of money,” Korner told Covers. “That following has been waiting for a while for Notre Dame to make a statement and have a quality team. The wins they have and the way they’re playing is impressive.”

Korner says it will be interesting to see where this line goes in the first few days, expecting sharps to bet the Fighting Irish and wait on the public flood of action to drive up the spread before buying back Michigan closer to game time. The Wolverines are 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings with Notre Dame, including last year's thriller under the lights in the Big House.

“Michigan is a quality team too and, while it’s tough to gauge these lines a week in advance, the wiseguys will wait and take Michigan plus as many points as they can get,” Korner speculates.

Here’s a look at the opening lines for some of the other marquee games on the Week 4 board:

Clemson Tigers at Florida State Seminoles (-12)

The Noles are near two-touchdown faves in this battle of ACC powers, which should indicate just how much better FSU is than the rest of the conference. The Sports Club sent out Seminoles -13, so books didn't move too far from that, respecting Clemson’s ability to put points on the board. The Tigers are 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings with FSU. Early money has bumped this up to Seminoles -13.

Kansas State Wildcats at Oklahoma Sooners (-15)

The Sooners come into this Big 12 battle tagged as lofty faves versus a KSU squad that had a tough time with North Texas last week. The Sports Club suggested an even higher spread, sending out OU -17. Oklahoma didn’t look like national title contenders in its first two showings, but has had two weeks to prepare for KSU and is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games off the bye. Early money on the Wildcats has moved this spread down to two touchdowns.

Arizona Wildcats at Oregon Ducks (-26.5)

The Ducks are hefty chalk in this Pac-12 clash, despite Arizona winning over many bettors in the first three weeks. The Wildcats are 3-0 (2-1 ATS) behind new head coach Rich Rodriguez while the Ducks are also 3-0 but have failed to cover the spread in each of those contests. The Sports Club sent out a suggested spread of 26 for this game and books stuck on the half-point hook. However, the spread is down to -24 as of Sunday night.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    STREAKING

                    A.J. Griffin, Oakland Athletics (6-0, 1.94)

Griffin improved to 6-0 on the season after tossing eight shutout innings against the Angels on Wednesday. The rookie has only allowed five homers over 65 innings of work and has picked up wins in each of his last three starts. He toes the rubber against the Tigers next.

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (15-8, 3.72)

Gallardo only surrendered two runs over seven innings to pick up the win over the Braves in his last start. The righty has won seven consecutive decisions and eight of his last past nine outings have been quality starts. He looks to keep it going against the struggling Pirates next time out.

                    SLUMPING

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-14, 5.87)

Romero allowed eight hits and three runs in four-plus innings before getting the hook against the Mariners last time out. The lefty dropped his 13th straight decision, tying him with Tom Underwood for the franchise record. Things won’t get easier for Romero as he draws the Yankees on Tuesday.

                    A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (15-7, 3.66)

Burnett gave up two runs over six innings in a loss to the Reds last week. The right-hander hasn’t won since Aug. 16, a span of five starts. He takes the bump against the red-hot Brewers in his next outing.
