    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Sunday/Monday's six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 700+ contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

    6) Houston Texans, 151
    5) Atlanta Falcons 157
    4) New England Patriots, 178
    3) San Francisco 49ers, 215
    2) Dallas Cowboys, 226
    1) Baltimore Ravens, 227

    32) Arizona Cardinals, 38
    30) Buffalo Bills, 44
    29) Cleveland Browns, 51
    28) Detroit Lions, 74
    27) Miami Dolphins, 75
    26) Tennessee Titans, 78

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday.......

    13) Stanford beat USC again, 21-14, shutting Trojans out in second half; fourth year in a row the Cardinal beat Southern California. USC was 0-12 on third down, which is a very surprising statistic.

    12) UL-Monroe continues to be September's most entertaining team; after winning in OT at Arkansas last week, the Warhawks went to Auburn and lost 31-28, also in OT. Only a TD on Hail Mary on the last play of the first half doomed Monroe. That, and not having a reliable kicker.

So my 86-year old dad is in the room while I'm watching this game; he is from New York City and isn't much of a college football guy, but when he heard Monroe got $1M+ to go to Auburn, he said, "Jeez, they should be able to buy some players with a million bucks." The man gets it.

    11) Steve Spurrier won his 200th career game Saturday; his best coaching job remains getting Duke to a bowl with Dave Brown as his QB.

    10) Clayton Kershaw may need surgery for a torn labrum in his hip; the Dodgers' key players have had trouble staying healthy this month.

    9) Milwaukee Brewers are within 2.5 games of the last NL playoff spot, but they've lost ten games they led after the 8th inning this season.

    8) Colorado trailed 55-7 at halftime at Fresno State; Buffaloes are in Pac-12, but why? They're the worst team in a BCS conference. If you're an ambitious young football coach, send your resume to Boulder. They're going to be hiring a new staff in a couple months.

    7) Another coach who will be packing boxes soon is Joker Phillips down at Kentucky; Wildcats lost to Western Kentucky in OT. Luckily for him, basketball practice at UK starts in less than four weeks, so not many folks will notice when Kentucky gets knocked around in SEC play.

    6) One more job opening this winter will be Arkansas, which lost 52-0 at home to Alabama-- their QB is hurt, the coach got fired for screwing around on his wife then giving his girlfriend a cushy job in the athletic department, the injured QB accused his teammates of quitt--well, you get the idea. Its September 16 and its already been a long season there.

    5) Lookalikes: Florida Gators football coach Will Muschamp and former NHL defenseman Mike Milbury.

    4) Firing the offensive line coach didn't help Wisconsin much; Badgers had to hang to edge Utah State 16-14. Badgers ran ball for only 156 yards against the gritty Aggies. Losing six assistant coaches didn't help bully Bret Bielema-- Wisconsin won't be scoring 83 on Indiana this year.

    3) Cal Bears outgained Ohio State by 100 yards, running ball for 224, but got hosed on a bogus holding call, then got victimized by their dreadful kicker (3 missed FGs), losing an extremely winnable game, 35-28.

    2) Friday night, Bergen Catholic beat Bishop Gorman 42-35 in high school game in Las Vegas. Why is a high school team from New Jersey going cross country to play a game on a Friday night? Who paid for it? If they played on Friday, they traveled on Thursday, at the latest.

    1) Bizarre ending at Utah late Saturday night, when the Utes' crowd got a 15-yard penalty for charging the field after a blocked FG, and it almost cost Utah the game. BYU got to re-try the game-tying FG from 15 yards closer, but the kid hit the upright and Utah won anyway, 24-21.

Geico 400 betting preview: Round 1 of The Chase

The anticipation is over. The 12 drivers for the 2012 version of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup have been set. After a week of media events the top 12 and the rest of field are ready to get down to the business at hand.

For the first time in Chase history the first of the 10 races that make up NASCAR’s playoffs will held at the 1.5 mile Chicagoland Speedway with Sunday’s Geico 400.

      The Favorites:

Tony Stewart is the defending winner here and there’s no reason he won’t end up at the top of the field Sunday. Stewart leads all Chasers, and active drivers for that matter, with three wins here, two of those coming in the last five races at Chicago.

In addition he has two top fives and a top ten finish. The reigning Sprint Cup champion is seeded third in the Chase and coming off a fourth place finish last week at Richmond. Stewart is looking to move up in the standings and has a pretty good shot of doing just that and adding a fourth win to his season total and his Chicagoland resume Sunday.

“I feel like we’ve got a shot at it,” Stewart said. “But I don’t watch the stats very much. You just take it week to week. Technology in this sport changes so fast. What was good the last time you were there doesn’t mean it’s going to be good the second time around. You constantly have to work. You’ve got to keep pushing the envelope. It’s a place I like. This place is really getting racy as far as finally being able to move around and change lines and run anywhere from the bottom to the top. It’s a fun track because of that.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. enters the Chase as a legitimate contender, perhaps for the first time in his career. In a season filled with strong finishes and a win at Michigan, Earnhardt could race to a win Sunday. He won here in 2005 and was third here last year in a season where he wasn’t running nearly as strong as he is this time around.

“We've been consistent all year long, and I think our chances are as good as they have ever been for me,” Earnhardt said. “I had a pretty good shot at it back in '04, but I think this year is a better opportunity. We've got the team, and we’re poised to make a run at it. You've got to put the guys that have won the championship at the top of the list as the favorites but we are in the conversation, and we're going to work hard to still be in that conversation at Homestead ."

Clint Bowyer hasn’t won a title, but this year may be his best chance so far. Bowyer seems poised to surprise many in the Chase with his new ride at Michael Waltrip Racing and that surprise could include a win Sunday. Coming off a victory last week at Richmond, his second of the season, Bowyer is on a roll and could add a second victory at the track where he’s scored two top 10 and one top five finish in the last five races here.

The Rest: 1. Denny Hamlin has never won here. He has one top five and two top ten finishes with an average finish of 19.2

      2. Jimmie Johnson. This is only of two tracks in the Chase that Johnson has never won at, the other being Homestead. He has a record of five top five and eight top 10 finishes along with a DNF here. His average finish is 10.

      4. Brad Keselowski has only raced here three times, but has one top five and a top ten finish to show for his efforts. His average finish is among the lowest of the Chase field however at 18.3.

      5. Greg Biffle. The Biff has one top five and one top 10 finish in nine starts; his average finish is also among the lowest of the Chase field at 18.8.

      8. Matt Kenseth has never won here but has a pole along with two top five and four top 10 finishes in 11 starts with an average finish of 12.3.

      9. Kevin Harvick has two wins here, but those came a decade ago. Since then he has six top five and seven top 10 finishes with a an average finish of 10.4

      10. Martin Truex Jr. Bowyer’s teammate has one top five and a top 10 finish to show for his six starts here. His average finish is 18.2

      11. Kasey Kahne. Chicagoland has not been historically kind to Kahne. In eight starts he has one top five, two top 10s and two DNFs. His average finish is lowest among the Chase field at 21.

      12. Jeff Gordon. He has one win here along with one pole, six top five and seven top 10 finishes. Gordon has an average finish of 10.0.

      The Others:

Keep an eye on Carl Edwards. After just missing out on the Chase, Edwards wants redemption and while he has never won here, he was fourth in this race last year and second the year prior. Overall he has three top five and three top 10s with an average finish of 16.3. With no Chase points to protect, Edwards has one goal Sunday and for the rest of the season.

“We are going to Chicago to win the race,” Edwards said. “We have nothing to lose. We almost had nothing to lose at Richmond, but now we really have nothing to lose. We are going to go out and just enjoy these last 10 races for what they are. It’s a chance to go have fun, to try things we’ve been wanting to try all year that we want to try for next year and just try to get victories. I wish so bad this was the first race of our 2012 championship, but really it’s the first race of our 2013 championship run. We’re just getting a head start on these guys and that’s how we have to look at it.”

Another of the non-Chasers to watch is Ryan Newman. Newman has won here and finished eighth last season. He has two top fives and six top 10s with an average finish of 15.9.

      Bottom Line:

Kyle Busch won the 2008 race from the pole, the first time a driver won from the pole. It was also the only time a driver had won from a top-five starting position. Kevin Harvick won the 2002 race from the 32nd starting position, the deepest in the field that a race winner ever started at Chicago. Only one starting position has multiple wins: 14th. Mark Martin won from the 14th starting position in 2009, as did Ryan Newman in 2003.

Canadian Bacon: Week 12 CFL betting preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With only eight weeks remaining on the CFL schedule, the playoff picture is beginning to take shape. Here are a few tidbits on the Week 12 matchups:

        SUNDAY

        Saskatchewan at Montreal (-6, 53.5)

The Montreal Alouettes (6-4) look to get back to their winning ways when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-5) on Sunday. Als QB Anthony Calvillo had his lowest passing total of the season in last week’s loss to B.C., completing only 16 attempts for 152 yards and a score. The Roughriders have posted back-to-back victories but also have issues at QB. Backup quarterback Drew Willy helped Saskatchewan slip past lowly Winnipeg 25-24 last week in relief of Darian Durant. The first-string signal-caller suffered a hip flexor injury early in the contest and may be sidelined against the Alouettes.

        Trends
        * Roughriders are 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings in Montreal.
        * Under is 13-2-1 in the last 16 meetings in Montreal.
        * Alouettes are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  STREAKING

Ricky Nolasco, Miami Marlins (12-12, 4.40)

Nolasco tossed a four-hitter Sunday to lift Miami over Washington 8-0. The righty nailed down his third consecutive victory, only squandering one earned run across his last 25 innings. He’ll have to be sharp in his next start against the high-powered Reds.

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (19-7, 2.93)

Gonzalez pitched six innings and allowed one run Monday to pick up his 19th victory of the season. The lefty has won three straight starts, surrendering just one earned run over his last 22 innings of work. Gonzalez can become the first 20-game winner in the bigs with a strong outing against the Braves.

                  SLUMPING

Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers (9-12, 4.59)

Porcello allowed four runs, three earned, over 5 1/3 innings against the White Sox last time out. It was the third consecutive start the righty has failed to go six innings and the sixth consecutive start he's lost. He tries to get back on track versus the Tribe on Sunday.

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (13-13, 4.01)

Wainwright yielded five runs (two earned) over six innings to the Padres in his last outing. The right-hander has given up 11 earned runs over his last 7 2/3 innings and looks to right the ship against the Dodgers next

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Braves at Nationals
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Braves attempt to make one last push at an NL East title on Sunday Night Baseball when they host the Nationals.

                    GO GIO GO

Gio Gonzalez can become the first 20-game winner in Nationals history with a victory on Sunday. The lefty is thriving since his transition to the NL and has allowed just one earned run over his last 22 innings. The former Oakland starter has been solid away from home this campaign, allowing just nine runs in his last four road starts. This will be his fourth start against Atlanta and his third on the road against them. He has surrendered only nine runs and 13 hits in those three road outings.

                    MINOR MIRACLE

Atlanta starter Mike Minor is 8-10 with a 4.42 ERA this season. He started the campaign slowly, but has turned things around recently. The right-hander has yielded three earned runs or less in nine of his last ten starts, while striking out 15 batters in his last two outings against Milwaukee and Colorado.

                    INJURY REPORT

Stephen Strasburg was recently shut down for the rest of the season. Washington is also without Henry Rodriguez (back) and Wilson Ramos (knee). Michael Morse is not at 100 percent and his status for Sunday night is questionable due to a wrist injury. Atlanta has a relatively clean bill of health; they’re still without pitchers Brandon Beachy (elbow), Ben Sheets (shoulder), and Jair Jurrjens(groin) but they’ve managed to survive those injuries because hurlers like Minor and Kris Medlen have stepped up.

                    TRENDS
*Nationals are 13-3 in Gonzalez's last 16 road starts.
*Nationals are 4-0 in Gonzalez's last four road starts vs. a team with a winning record.
*Braves are 5-2 in their last seven Sunday games.
*Braves are 2-5 in Minor's last seven starts.

                    HITTERS TO WATCH
                    Ryan Zimmerman 2-for-11 vs. Minor.
                    Danny Espinosa 3-for-11 vs. Minor.
                    Jason Heyward 3-for-9 vs. Gonzalez.
                    Martin Prado 1-for-9 vs. Gonzalez.
